    This is what makes The Doctor one of the most intriguing characters ever. He is not a 'hero' merely because he is 'good' but because he has the capacity for evil and the power to be a tyrant but resists it. Doctor Who has never taken any shortcuts or given us any easy answers on the subject of morality and this video illustrates this wonderfully.

      +TheGaroStudios I hope the Doctor realizes how big of a bootstrap paradox that would create, If he killed Davros then the Daleks would not have been created, there wouldnt be a Timewar, he may be a few faces younger and ergo he would never be in the situation where he would want to go back to kill Davros because Davros never existed.
      However i guess the Timelords would still be alive after he killed him and apparently they had the ability to 'fix' paradoxes...

      That's what makes him so relatable to us regardless of how alien or how powerful the writers make him.
      As biological beings, we are driven by the need to consume to survive, easily swayed by the anger and hatred that darkens our souls when we can’t satisfy our insecurities that drive us to try to control everything and everyone around us.
      Consumed by the pain and loneliness of losing the ones we care about and dare to love, controlled by the fear caused by both their and our own biological fragility and short lived mortality.
      As humans we are allowed to make mistakes, we are allowed to indulge ourselves in not being perfect every once in a while, in fact our entire development as a species has depended on those very mistakes, we are after all, young, stupid and fragile in nature.
      But we must learn and we must grow and we must mentally evolve as sentient beings.
      Like the Doctor on occasion we allow ourselves to be consumed by our primal instincts and negative feelings / dark emotions but like the Doctor we too can choose to fight these selfish feelings and thoughts to become better, every second of everyday.
      To become the best versions of ourselves, to become more than just the sum of our parts.
      I believe it is our purpose to transcend beyond all that we think we know and feel, to transcend past the grip of control by our own greed, fear and hatred, to embrace our fragility instead of running frightened from our own inherent weakness, to become more than the sum of our parts.
      The Doctor is the closest fictional version of what I believe to be the ideal role model for being human i’ve ever encountered (Jean-Luc Picard is another) and I will always strive to encompass the very best parts of both myself and them into my personality where ever i can :)

    This show was one of the hardest shows for me to watch. Don't get me wrong, I love it to death. I love the sense of adventure the show leaves with me after every viewing, and I love The Doctor's empowering monologues. What made it the hardest show for me to watch, personally, are the overpowering theme of compassion and forgiveness. With each year, being a compassionate and forgiving person seems to just get harder and harder, most likely due to not only external events, horrible events, that we have all witnessed on our TV screens, but the growth of my sense of self. Compassion and forgiveness seem to hold no value in this modern day world, and it would be easier to just never forgive anyone ever again, or show any compassion ever again.
    To this day, I constantly struggle trying to keep these values prominent in my life, and this show taught me how hard being a person of compassion and forgiveness is. We see many episodes where the Doctor almost gives in to the pressure, and wants to just take the easy way out. Most notably for me, would have to be the episode where he meets the young Davros, and at first, runs away instead of saving the boy. He struggles with the internal conflict of whether he should grant this boy the compassion he proves (as he grows up) to not be worthy of in the slightest. In the end, as always, the Doctor prevails, and his never-ending compassion shines through, as he decides to save the boy.
    I see this reflection in my life, almost every day. Going through high school, it seems so easy to just cuss out those people who wrong me, react violently to those who provoke me, and speak in an insulting and petty manner behind their backs. I am guilty of all of these, sadly. Showing compassion to these people, showing forgiveness, is one of the hardest things for me to do. These people don't deserve compassion or forgiveness, after the way they treated me, do they? But, using that same logic, neither do I.
    It is this show that taught me the value of compassion and forgiveness. Even though it is difficult, I have never experienced a negative reaction to forgiveness or compassion, apart from some minor exceptions, which were just more challenges to these values. The message that this show delivers is one that I hold close to my heart, everyday, when it gets hard, when I just want to give in to the animalistic anger which burns deep inside of all of us. I always think back to David Tennant’s monologues, where his anger and his rage burns so brightly, but he always remembers the truth that has set him apart from all other Time Lords, and almost every other being in the show. His ability to use compassion and forgiveness as his strongest weapons. I will never forget what this show taught me, and I will always try to make compassion and forgiveness my most memorable qualities, as difficult as it is to do so. Compassion and forgiveness in the face of adversity, is the hardest thing to do, but the strongest weapon in any arsenal.

    It's funny how out of these four Doctors, Twelve looks and talks like he is the sternest, roughest, scariest, when in fact he is the kindest of them all. He was never cruel or reckless (except when he left young Davros - but he did fix that mistake in the end; also leaving Missy on Scaro after she saved him wasn't nice at all, but of course she is a big girl, who can take care of herself), never selfish or dishonest, and - at last - a husband that River deserved. Sure, Ten and Eleven were cute, charismatic and fun, always smiling and hugging, but my God, how many lives have they screwed, how much suffering caused! And then we got Twelve - both wise and childish, dangerous and good, experienced but so unsure of himself, loyal and fierce and so adorable! Thank to brilliant Peter Capaldi there is no question about who my favorite Doctor is.
    Oh, and your video is, as usual, a masterpiece

      Mostly with the Doctors, the sterner they are, the kinder.
      One was a grumpy stern man, but he held more compassion then most others did.
      Twelve has a heart of gold underneath his darkness.
      But the most obvious one would be War. Thanks to John Hurt, War comes off as a warm, nice old man that you sympathise with. But we know he's killed more people than every other Doctor combined.

      12 always felt tired to me. Tired of the bloodshed, of losing those he loved, of being betrayed and tortured with. So, he became cold and distant. He still cared, but he never showed it. He never wanted to have visible weaknesses. That’s my view of 12.

    This man has been alone for so long, has lived so long, seen so much death and destruction. The blood and hate of others bled into his hearts. Oh those big living hearts. Even a loving heart has a shadow that darkens up many light days. This man has felt so much. He has seen so much. He is so much.

    Dunno if anyone else made this connection but...
    9th Doctor = The Storm.
    11th and 12th Doctor = The Beast.
    10th Doctor = The Valeyard.
    I find these very appropriate given the darker sides of each of these Doctors.

    • @mattneese8571
      @mattneese8571 8 років тому +1

      How do you figure?

    • @alexandergonyea4642
      @alexandergonyea4642 8 років тому +44

      Art Of Breaking
      Well, I see the Ninth Doctor as the Storm as he is the first Doctor after the events of the Last Great Time War, where that name first became prevalent. And along many of his adventures he did bring a great amount of action and danger in his wake, especially in the way he dealt with some enemies.
      The Tenth Doctor I see as the Valeyard as the ways he deals with enemies are less aggressive than the others, but rather more thoughtful and sinister even. Perfect examples are how he dealt with the Family of Blood in the episode of the same name, and Miss Hartigan in the Next Doctor.
      The Eleventh and Twelfth Doctor can be seen as the Beast due to the fact they treat their enemies with much more aggression in the way they act around them, ergo the 11th Doctor's treating of the "Ironside" Daleks in 'Victory of the Daleks,' or how the 12th Doctor treated the other Time Lords in 'Hell Bent.' We even see on some occasions where they act in a similar fashion to their own companions as well, something unseen in the 9th or 10th Doctors. Overall just act much more angry and violent towards those around them than the 9th and 10th Doctors.

  • @EnderKingDubs
    @EnderKingDubs 5 років тому +9

    I must say. One of my favorite parallels (intentional or not) is that during the 9th Doctor's run, the first time we see the Daleks in New Who, the Dalek says to him, "You would make a good Dalek". Then, once the 12th Doctor is confronted with the chance to show a Dalek the beauty of the Universe, of Kindness, of Compassion; the Dalek not only sees Hatred in his heart, but says to him, "You ARE a good Dalek", and I think you saw that too. The minute I saw that episode in 12's run, my mind immediately jumped back to that moment, and it stung, that's for sure. It stung especially, when 12 said, "You looked into me and saw hatred... That's not victory", after the Dalek questioned why The Doctor was sad about 'winning' and Capaldi's heartbreaking delivery of the line really hit it home. I swear, this show can often be hit or miss with its writing, but its moments and parallels like these that make the show worth sticking with.

    "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a
    monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into
    you."-Nietzche
    The Doctors staves of this obscenity, he could have become a scourge to the universe worse then the Daleks if it wasn't for his countless companions.
    The straightest of vector can still go of course given time, the companions are the specks in the night sky that allows him to correct his course through his journey of immortality.

    I used to be a little frightened of the dark Doctor since how much fury and anger he throws out, but then, slowly, I began to love that side of The Doctor since it's like, he's showing an emotion we all don't want to show at someone, he tries to keep his composure all together even though he knows someday, it'll all break apart, and his image of being The Doctor would crumble (Like the War Doctor or 8.5) and even if he tries to run away, the memories, the past, the suffering and guilt, it all kept chasing after him, making him remember every single time, this pain is like - eating his mind out like parasites, but he stills try to be that very Doctor we all know and love.
    Someday, and at someone, you will have to release your fury, because no one can bottle up such an emotion, an emotion of hatred and/or anger. Everyone has their dark sides, some may have showed this side already, while some - bottle it up.
    WOW. This escalated quickly than I thought. I don't know, I just love making such long explanations or such since it makes me think, and I like it, thinking is good!

    The Daleks are such good metaphor for the dangerous path the Doctor can go down if he's not careful. He must not shun the other emotions- compassion, hope, joy, grief- and hold onto hatred. The Daleks are his greatest enemy, inside and out.

    The 4th Doctor is my Doctor, and that line (and the one before it: "Do I have the right?") always sends chills down my spine, particularly the first time I heard it long ago. That's the scene that made me a Whovian forever. This video shows me better than anything else how the Doctor, hero tho he is, has had that darkness deep inside him from the very beginning. I come back and watch this playlist over and over, when my own pain gets to be too much, and gets dammed up inside, ready to burst. Every single one of your videos gives me chills, but this one pushed that into overdrive. I know it's bad but my fave parts of the show is when the Doctor stops being good and you can see the pain and hatred in his life.

    I think it's good to showcase this aspect of the Doctor. Because he is an alien, who travels through time for hundreds of years and yes he did a lot of good for the universe- but sometimes the good things happen as a result of the bad. And he's lost so much, been through so much that he sometimes just doesn't care- and I think it's an important part of his character, and of his development of a character.

    GOSH! I missed your videos so mcuh. I am sorry I haven't commented in a while, I am still your fan but I was super busy with school(still am but whatever) and I've had like 50 videos in watch later, not kidding. Tomorrow I go back to studying cause today I had a test and it's free day but I said I should watch videos then in a row cause I couldn't watch them all in a week and I let yours last because I usually let the best videos at last and I'm never wrong when I say yours are the best. I love how you portaited the doctor in this one, sometimes people need to remember his dark side as well because that's why he is such a complex and conflicted characters. Like Sirus Black said ''we all have good and dark inside of us, what matters is the power we choose to act on''. This video prooves that point exactly.

    "Once and a while on a whim when the wind's in the right direction you happen to be kind."
    "Only a killer would know that."
    Those lines stook with me since I saw the Doctor sit to dinner with a creature he knew he was sending to death seeing one of the endless faces of the monsters he has stopped and destroyed and having being able to relate to him to the point that they can even relate on how their minds work brilliant writting

    So I have a headcanon and I'm not sure how well it works and I'm kind of making it up as I go along but here it is;
    Y'all remember that one Dalek that he went inside and mind-melded with? The one that calls him a "Good Dalek"? Now I think in the episode it was implied that it went sorta kamikaze on the other Daleks but What if it made it through that whole experience and lived on after that?
    What if through its ability to connect with other Daleks it convinced others of its cause? Showed others the Beauty of the Doctor's hatred? His Hatred of evil and cruelty?
    I'd like to imagine it would start up some cult or group or movement like the Knights Templar? A Holy Order of warrior monks. Got loads of scattered Daleks together and maybe recruited others like the Cybermen and Sontaran and such. They'd call themselves "The Doctors' Kindness" or something, referring both to the literal "Doctor" but also the more metaphorical kindness off doctors when they give the mortally wounded or Terminally ill too much morphine or something to send them off without pain. (Not super sure on the name though)
    They'd act according to a sort of distorted version or a perverted Mirror of the Doctors' morals wherein they'd actively seek out evil and brutally put down those exhibiting it. Seek out those who can't be helped or saved, give them beautiful lies so that they are at least somewhat comforted or calm when the black hole sucks in their whole planet or their star goes nova.
    They could be like a combo of Valkyries and the Furies. They'd Blast through the universe screaming out their Beautiful Hatred of the Cruel and the Cowardly, raining down the fury of righteous judgment upon them. They could come to eventually "Worship" the Doctor at the alter of the battlefield. The Battlefield of "Good" Vs. "Evil".
    They'd preach of the righteousness of their cause to those they had saved, recruiting them to their cause. Whole planets coming to see the beauty in punishing the wicked-
    And Oh my god I just realized this starts to sound like WH40k and the God-Emperor... O_O
    But that could work actually... ... ... And hey funnily enough, much like the God-Emperor in WH40k the Doctor too would probably be horrified when he saw what they were doing in his name... ... Kinda similar questions about how much is justified justice, how much can be sacrificed for the good of the many as well...
    This last bit is a bit rough but bear with me lol---
    And even better, it would even fit nicely in with the new season's inclusiveness and female empowerment and bigotry and stuff like that... Probably not in exactly the way they would prefer but imagine this, you've got your group of warrior monks; As long as you swear your "Oaths of Hatred" towards the Wicked you're in. All the ships and weapons and uniforms designed to work with any people who sign on, designed to work with any of the differences you'd come across with dozens or hundreds of different races/species. Mixed crews and regiments possibly based on some combo of Gallyfrean and earth military formations. All-inclusive. To fit the Female empowerment in there just imagine, everyone, friend or foe, knows the Doctor likes earth (for some reason, like we're a favored pet of Mr. Time god or something) and the companions he travels with tend to be either solely female or composed of at least one female so what would a religious order trying to follow after their preferred hate god do? They might actively look for earth female type stuff to integrate into their symbolism right? SO why not actively include things like the aforementioned Valkyries or furies, folks like the Amazons and such. I'm not sure exactly how they would integrate said symbolism though, perhaps the Sontarans would start cloning female Sontarans for their special forces dedicated to the cause, call them amazons or something, that could be cool.
    Just a thought... What do y'all think?
