The funny thing is the original series already dealt with monster on monster racism with the vampires vs werewolf thing as well as the issue with the hybrids. The musical isn't treading on anything new other than derailing Clawdeen to being the 'victim' in this because...well, why not? Because she's Black and all Black characters' only defining trait is looking scared and racism. With Jackson/Holt it at least made more sense as well as served as a good in-joke given that Jackson and Holt are two different personalities and it's something that Jackson really fully couldn't control. You can argue that Clawdeen has the 'same' issues but given that Jackson couldn't stop himself from transforming when he heard certain music, it was much more out of his control, on top of the running gag being that a lot of the monsters preferred Holt because he was 'cooler' and knew how to DJ. The new setting just makes everyone out to be a jerk which wasn't the case. Of all the characters to be on the prejudice train, Bloodgood would be last to call out students like that. Hell, the Vampire vs Werewolf special made it a plot point that she was replaced in order to get the plan going because she would have not allowed bullying or discrimination to happen in her school, let alone participate in it. That's what feels is missing from this musical; the subtly. While the specials did have their messages, what worked was it showed that not everyone was agreement with the 'bad thing' vs 'the good thing' to the main cast. The musical comes off as trying way too hard to project a message by making EVERYONE 'the bad' aside from the chosen few and it's just not fun mostly because by this point, we already know how it's going to go. No, it doesn't make sense that Draculaura is into witchcrat and it makes even less sense that Monster High wouldn't allow magic when the very foundation of the school is based around MAGICAL CREATURES with MAGICAL POWERS. Did the writers not realize this glaring plothole as they were coming up with issues for their characters to remind us they're suffering from? And of all the things, why would Clawdeen turn into a human when she gets nervous? It should be the other way around; fight or flight kicks in and she turns into beast mode. But I digress. It's just too safe and bland.
Jaded part of me thinks they thought the idea of her turning into a wolf when angry made the higher ups worried people would think she's too similar to hulk. Which makes no sense, but is also stupid enough to happen
@@thisusernameisalreadytaken5132 That would have been cool though considering Clawdeen already had 'hair issues' when the moon was full in the original version. And you bringing that up made me question if Monster High even knew how to deal with werewolves before because wouldn't they already know that hybrids exi- Never mind...
What I loved about monster high was how it subverted my expectations. I saw the ads and my first thought was "oh I guess Cleo is the usual mean girl." Then I watched it and yeah she was abrasive and a bit snobby but she didn't actually fit into that mean girl trope/cliche. They cleverly and cutely subverted so much of it. Only for this movie to turn around and make it into the very thing it avoided being.
Tbh I love cleo in g1. She was the most nicest mean girl. Tbh she wasn't mean but she just a nice diva. She was mean in the webisodes and got character development in the 3d animation movies Toralei however stayed being a mean bully until great scarrier reef she got character development
It kinda feels like Deuce was just throwing Cleo and Health under the bus instead of trying to better himself and staying loyal to his friends. It could've shown him trying to teach them how to be better but failing.
@@ZanyCartoons Personally, I would’ve gone with Selene as a name. It would’ve been kinda clever since Selene was the original Greek goddess of the moon.
@@avalasialove Yeah it's clever, it also has a good match up with Apollo's name. It's the god of sun and light, it really does work well with their relationship differences but there's too many moons with Clawdeen, it's on her shirt, belt, and if you look at the doll bed set it has a whole bunch of moons. I get she's a werewolf but there is too many moons with her. Maybe if she had suns too I'd be happy with the balance like a little of both her parents.
I don't think that is the case for Monster Hight, if they realy wanted to push the nostalgia button they would nit have made an entire new movie with entire new characters with entire new evrything. This is more about trying to pick up new fans.
@@nuotatorre8741 yeah, that's what og fans aren't understanding. yes, they're trying to capitalize on nostalgia but the reason everything is so different is because they're trying to appeal to children and new fans. im an og monster high fan but i am loving g3 so far. I can understand that people don't like it or it doesn't appeal to them anymore. g3 is different, but different is not bad, i quite like g3.
I'm glad this movie didn't win the choice awards, like they were nominated for the best movie?! 😂😂 It's, a bit ok I know people hated it and said it was the worst movie, it was 😁 but nickelodeon crew and of course mattel shouldn't have changed the characters' storyline, it supposed to stick to the original that we grew up watching
The movie just looks like new Disney Channel shlock. The whole thing about being unaccepted based on "race" or "species" or whatever was done far better in G1 in several ways: - As you mentioned, Jackson Jekyll was a primary example. He was a human, and he was bullied by Mannie Taur a lot for being one. Heath didn't even want to really be associated with Jackson who's his cousin. That being said, Deuce was one of the few people who wasn't impressed with that, and actually be friendly towards Jackson. Soooo...a bit weird they made Deuce the "bullied" kid now since he was the actual cool guy most people wanted to be friends with, and, like you said, he brought out the best in Cleo. - When Abbie Bominable first came to Monster High, she was highly misunderstood as being "cold" and a bit of a bitch by several people, including Frankie and some of her friends. This was because of different cultural customs back in the Himalayas and a prank from Toralei. Poor Abbie got quite upset when her attempts to be friendly backfired. It was all cleared up at the end as they found out Toralei was responsible, and Abbie did talk about her culture, too, which explained her actions (e.g. speaking short and blunt sentences so you don't lose air). Additionally, the Headmistress made Abbie and Frankie work it out together by cuffing them together, which, it actually worked out in the end. - The whole spiel between the vampires and werewolves. This also put Clawd and Draculaura's relationship in jeopardy since they were supposed to "pick" their respective side. Clearly, neither wanted to. Though at the end, at least things got better. I think this was also the movie when the Headmistress was purposely replaced because she would've not tolerated any of the discrimination or fights there. - Speaking of relationships where others weren't so accepting, Lagoona and Gil also had this since Gil's parents didn't want him to date somebody from the sea. Gil himself tried hiding his relationship with Lagoona and it affected it instead as Lagoona felt hurt from it (and who could blame her? Replace "freshwater" and "saltwater" with actual races, then you could see why). That being said, when he revealed to his parents that he was dating Lagoona, his parents yelled at him over the phone and sent him to boarding school. - The whole humans vs monsters where J mentioned Holt Hyde was almost killed. That being said, it was because the humans were also tricked into thinking Holt was terrorising them. Luckily, Holt was saved in the nick of time and proven innocent and the humans did wind up being more accepting of monsters in the end. Additionally, in the anime of Monster High, the monsters tend to only come out when it's Halloween on purpose - it's so they can fit in without hiding. However, Clawdeen actually wound up meeting a human boy and fell in love with him. However, while the ghouls were so happy for her, they soon realise it's a forbidden relationship as humans and monsters can't intermingle due to the portal connecting their worlds closing. This thus ends with Clawdeen howling to the moon in sadness. There are probably other examples that Monster High G1 tackled, but these were some of the ones I could think at the top of my head. In the end, it actually dealt with the whole theme of acceptance quite well. Most modern things are just too in-your-face about it, that it's rather preachy and annoying and make you want to leave rather than stay and listen.
Ngl, watching the teacher sing about the isolation of a mixed student, celebrating how the school chased him out and are basically the reason he got murdered was uncomfortable. Such a happy song about their world’s racism… the school blatantly encouraging this behavior is so messed up. Been rewatching the original web series and movies and the school was the complete opposite. All the prejudice was from outside forces manipulating students like Van Helscream. Bloodgood for sure didn’t stand for monster/human inequality, she even dreamed of making a school for literally everyone. This new live action, I had to stop watching multiple times because it just was uncomfortable seeing not only the characters be out of character (RIP my Draculaura) but the entire school as a whole. Also, felt like the songs dragged on way too long, especially the first one.
I meen isn't the point of that song to make unconforable both the Clawdeen and the viewer by nakeing her feel like an outcast? And as a reminder the villan sings that song. Also the charcters are not "out of charcter" since they are not the old characters, you don't have to like the new characters but you should at least ve fair an let them stand on theri own.
Wait...I just realized, Clawdeen isn't the Daughter of the Wolfman(think about it) Frankie and Draculaura are The Daughters/Children of the Main three, Yet Clawdeen is just some Girl that just so happened to be a werewolf bc her mom was one. (Sigh...how did they somehow mess up the Base Concept of monster high!?!?) (Edit: Great! Now it's the daughter of Dracula, The child of Frankenstein and some girl who just happened to be a werewolf. great)
What do you men she isn't the daugher of the wolfman? Do you meen she isn't the daughter of THE wolfman? I always thoght than she was just a wolf woman, and daughter of a wolfdad and wolfmother. Besides isn't Goolia also the daughter of a generic zombie, Cleo the daughter of a generic mummy and Spectra the daughter of a generic ghost?
@@nuotatorre8741 First off, It's Mean not men/meen. Secondly Clawdeen isn't the Daughter of the Wolfman because her Father is just some guy, it's her Mother whose the werewolf. (And I'm not saying that the Wolfman can't be a woman but if so, Why wasn't Dracula or Frankenstein genderbent?) Third, Because the Original three Were the Children of the Famous monsters it wouldn't make sense for Clawdeen off all people to just be some rando. I think the reason why Cleo and Ghoulia were "generic mummies and zombies" is because the original 60s film where about "generic mummies and zombies". And Spectra...Spectra's just some ghost, I may be wrong but if I'm right there hasn't been a movie about a ghost-ghost before really we only have Possessed movies, or a polteageist. (wasn't the best example to bring up honestly) Edit: (also it's Thought not thoght)
Okay, the only way I can buy monsters EVER having to fear humans would be if they had iron or just guns in general, and even then you have monsters that can turn humans to stone, others can transform humans into monsters via bitting the neck, and some are just so indictrutable or so hard to kill that to this day some regions of the world still hold the belief that these monsters still exist. Many of which HAVE natural magic in their veins. By all acounts and purposes, humans should have been extinct long ago!
As much as I dislike 'Charmed' I will give credit for the fact that it addressed this point quite well. It established that not only were there many benevolent magical beings that protect humankind, but the malevolent ones were hampered by their own in-fighting.
With the ideas that are presented in Gen 3 feels like they took stuff from Gen 1 and put them through a coat of paint to be honest. As someone whose been exposed to MH at a young age, it feels that the people working on the 2022 version think they're doing something new but there are aspects that are already done in the web cartoons and movies, most specifically the half-human plotline that was done in Ghouls Rule. I know people are going to talk about "it's for a new generation" but even then, it should be put through time, effort, and care. There are other franchise that have been rebooted such as TMNT, Transformers, Bakugan, and even MLP but the main aspect, to me, is the parts that can stand out and produce quality rather than for the sake of a new gen.
I gave it a chance and watched it for maybe 15 mins and couldn’t get through it…in one scene when one of the students was dancing you can see the undo makeup 😅
@@animezilla4486 This was supposed to be Monster High's third chance to redeem itself and so far it has FAILED. Welcome to Monster High was much better in my opinion IMO it's just that no one gave it a chance even if it was a massive improvement over the previous.
@@animezilla4486 This might actually be Monster High's final/last chance because the last time they rebooted Monster High Universal and Hasbro instantly gave up on it. Looking at the already negative impact this live action movie and the upcoming new Animated series have gotten. I have a sour feeling that Universal and Nickelodeon will give up on Monster High once again.
In the original monster high the werewolves both have Human and wolf features but in g1 they weren't technically half human. In g1 it was like they were born as a wolf Monster snd when they were cubs they look like normal wolves and when they grow older they start to have a bit of a more human body form but still remain with the fur, wolf ears and fangs. Same goes for the werecats in G1 Monster high
I totally agree. It doesn't feel like mobster high. When I first saw the trailer it gave me 'Descendants' vibes and I even started singing the descendants songs in my head. Additionally to the things you've pointed out; I don't like all the differences between the movie and the original monster high. They cut clawdeens brothers(one of which was Claude, Draculaura's boyfriend), made Draculaura's character alot darker in comparison to the original bubbly lovable Draculaura that we know and love and its unbelievable that they dismantled Deuce and Cleo's relationship. They belong together and Deuce and Clawdeen are just not a good fit. And I don't like how they gave Ghoulia's super smarts to Frankie (didnt even recognize her as Ghoulia because of her more bubly and non-zombie luke traits)and made Lagoona into a type of lapdog mean girl to Cleo. Also would have loved to see more action happen with Heath, Lagoona, Ghoulia and Abbey. Don't like how they scraped the original Jackson/Holt from the movie, he's one of my most favourite characters. Not to mention that I think that they went to far with all the mentions of eating people(severed foot)/drinking their blood (the original Draculaura is a vegetarian vampire)
This is the perfect example of two things. One) this is what happens when people decide to remake an IP but never understanding the characters or the world. Two) not everything needs a live action version.
The Japanese do this better, in 'Princess Resurrection' and 'Rosario Vampire'. Hell, 'Princess Resurrection' even has a half-werewolf who faced discrimination from other werewolves, with the exception of a loving half-brother who's a full werewolf!
@@mistysh7717 The difference is that Monster High (the school, not the series) was overall very accepting, practically post-racial; at the very least, it wasn’t a place where prejudice was tolerated. This movie just feels like the standard Racism Story.
My main problem is how they decided to rebrand the reboot; let's be honest, it was idiotic for them to redo completely what made monster high loveable. For monster high content this major, they should have kept to the original while adding on lore for the first movie, then start to get creative and bring something new on the second one. I also hate the mixed girl troupe they did for clawdeen; as a black woman, I'm tired of full black characters getting switched out like this.
I hate how they wrote Draculaura in this movie, what's with her rudeness towards the girls in the movie? She used to be nice and sweet, and now she's more sassy and meaner, and it doesn't fit her -_-
Draculaura was mean in the live action? Wasn't cleo mean In the live action? It's weird they gave Draculaura and cleo Toraleis role since Toralei was supposed to be the "Mean girl"
Right, that's fair. But then she goes on to say that Gorgons are always trouble. That isn't really fair to put them all in a box. And if they do act the same, why say something like that? It didn’t feel right. They're kids. I would've edited that line too, "Gorgons are always ending up into trouble, but at monster high, we can put care and supervision over them so they can become better" or something like that.
@@lunarspace1196 Agree, but that's not what the moving was aiming for apparently. I'm just saying Duece made it hard for me considering that Gorgons are already hated.
"To create a safe place for all monsters" Safe place for all monsters, unless that monster is half human, then they'll treat you poorly, chase you out into the human world, for you to be murd3red out there. Got it!
I'd assume that even as you're right about the teacher's enthusiasm - the headmistress who was written to "blast" an innocent guy just because of his race; in a school that in this iteration had rejected a half human monster once already, would probably be less enthused about her gumption to go for this project than wanting to know what motive Clawdeen had. Regardless of the fact that would effectively needlessly be writing themselves into a corner. She would of course be combative if they got caught, which by the formula of putting the heroes into duress of course they would. Now if the lab ended up having a potion that altered mindsets back to base, or say... purged actual curses instead of figurative ones; rather than getting rid of the human half, it could be argued as better writing that said headmistress had been put under a hex or a curse for some reason or another and hadn't originally meant to evict Eddy in the first place. Which would naturally lead to her apologizing and reassuring Clawdeen she wouldn't be expelled regardless of her secret coming out - apologizing to Duece as well for by then proven baseless accusations, and then having it revealed that Eddy had managed to hide himself away as some sort of secret librarian/janitor or something. A teaching consultant over the "interwebs - which could be literal magical webs just for the jokes. Everybody gets a fair resolution. No character gets massacred, and there's a decently happy end. But then, what do I know. They're not paying me to write the script.
another inconsistency: draculaura is taiwanese in the cartoon but filipino in the movie, also most slavs and aussies don't hate the accents, and are insulted by the nationalism of making them american (especially the slavic ones). The only one with an accent is Lagoona since she's latina now. Most people calling the accents "stereotypical" and "offensive" are Americans who try to justify anti-foreign propaganda or other foreigners who aren't Slavic or Australian. Notice nobody complains about say, Operetta's southern accent being stereotypical because it's not a foreign accent, those Americans really be trying to find every excuse to discriminate, particularly against Russians, Romanians, and other Eastern Europeans
I knew they made Draculaura asian but they made her Filipino in the movie??? What? I guess the taiwanese/filipino thing is because both nationalities are Southeast Asian and both countries are practically next door neighbors, albeit doesn't really explain the inconsistency
@@francreeps4509 True. Also correction: Taiwan is in East Asia, the Philippines are in Southeast Asia. Whether they noticed or not they ended up treating Asians as copies of each other which is ignorant at best and on purpose at worst. Because, the other nationalitis remain the same in the new cartoon. Frankie is German in both, Lagoona's Honduran in both, Cleo's Egyptian, etc. But some characters with unknown nationalities are now know. Ghoulia is probably American, Heath is Greek, Finnegan is also Greek.
I remember a few years ago there was a Chinese animated movie that got backlash because the characters had small eyes. They were saying it was a racist portrayal of Chinese people....by Chinese people. The whole time I couldn't help but feel like a lot of us have become so exposed to American racist propaganda that we've invertedly started to agree with it as a form of retaliation. America villainized the racial features of Chinese people and in order to make up for it our modern society decided to continue to villainize it? This is exactly the same thing with accents.
Yeah and I really liked Draculaura's accent. It made her all the more cuter :( I would've found it sus how they made her asian, but at least keep her accent :(
How can they change the most SIMPLEST CONCEPTS for a Series into something that doen't make sense & SLIGHLTY complicated!? Which is "Monster High" of all things, not that I plan to watch the Older Series or the Newest Movie but I find it quite of an achievement by turning something 'Simplistic & Colorful' into 'Complicated & Dull'. Pretty good review especially sharing some details & your experience, been loving watching your videos & intriguing takes 👍
If we get a new G1 movie, it needs to IGNORE GREAT SCARRIER REEF AT ALL COSTS. Lagoona deserves better than that 70-something minutes of character assassination for her spotlight special. Also, it needs to adapt the “Freak Du Chic” doll range. I’ve got a sneaking suspicion that the three webisodes we got on it near the tail end of G1 were the remnants of a draft for a movie about the concept considering how rushed they were. … so I decided to start work on my own script for a Freak du Chic inspired movie. I gave Gooliope some fellow circus performers (those being a dullahan boy, a jorogumo girl, and a manananaggal girl), threw in some nods to other doll ranges (Draculaura and Lagoona are in their Monster Exchange Program outfits at the start), made Draculaura and Clawd co-narrators, and am planning to give Toralei a redemption arc. Sound good?
Surprised that Frankie had less complaints, other than her collections of hands and no prosthetic leg in the movie. Which is weird because if the writers made Frankie "they," then why no prosthetic leg either?
Just to point it out, the guy playing Dracula is Steve Valentine, a British actor, voice actor, and magician, but of course that doesn't mean his accent isn't going to be corny anyway. I was actually kinda sad they changed all the characters personas so drastically and then removed all their accents that made each character so unique and fun. I am warming up to the redesigns, but if the story has changed so much, it's very disappointing.
I liked the original with Frankie as the point of view character and sensible one and the new film/series switching to clawsine just doesn’t feel right, especially with downgrading frankie
A mixed race person trying to purge herself of half her own heritage. Doesn't that sound RACIST? How foolish do the writers have to be, to push an outright RACIST message as "anti-racist"? And why isn't Draculaura openly using magic and daring her classmates to stop her? She's the daughter of Dracula, who not only studied witchcraft and alchemy at Scholomance (as described in Bram Stoker's classic novel), but who was a brutal warlord who infamously tortured his enemies to death! With him as a role model, the only people who'll dare punish her for using witchcraft, will be those powerful enough to face her in battle and brave enough to face her father's wrath!
Poster: "Be Yourself. Be Unique. Be A Monster" ... Makes me think of the old philosophical bumper sticker saying, "Always remember: you're unique... just like everyone else!"
I find it funny that monster high's fans are going through the exact same thing that transformers fans went through. Even to having the different generations and reboots yet the first iteration was/is considered the best.
It felt cheap. The show was already inclusive but they ruined it by making it exclusive, especially at the beginning of the movie. Treating everyone monsters differently and not the same. I just felt so wrong.
Damn, it's been so long since I've watched Monster High. I remember crying when Frankie "died" in one of the gen1 movies. Those were the best types of movies. .
I feel like if the animation series was released before the movie, it would've been different. Sure, there would be a few people that still wouldn't like the animation but I think both the dolls and animation are pretty cute and adorable, the movie on the other hand is... Well smth.
You forgot to mention that the director for this movie made a very racist film in the 90’s called Krippendorf’s tribe, which explains most of the whitewashing in the movie. Side note: while I do agree that most stuff in the g1 cartoon was stereotypical and hasn’t aged well, I just want to point out that Lagoona in the movie was basically the spicy violent Latina trope because of how she snarled at Deuce when asking Cleo if she wanted to eat him. As someone who is Mexican, I find it to be weird that in the movie she is Brazilian but in the cartoon she is Honduran, and her music video about calling herself “romantic” and “feisty” was basically another example of the spicy aggressive Latina trope because growing up, I was always told to always tone down my attitude whenever I was trying to express how I feel. Side-note: since she called herself a “chili mango” in her video, I just want to point out that chili mangoes come from Mexico because it’s clear that for any forms of entertainment, they think all Latin American countries are the same when they aren’t.
Feels like another poor rehash of the original made into a poorly funded live action TV movie. Also, if Duce is a Gorgon and him accidentally turning people to stone was a thing in the original. Which is why he wears glasses. So if there worried about him doing the same here, why isn’t he wearing glasses?
It was highly offensive aswell. In scenes Frankie simply says "I use They/Them" and in others says "I'm non-binary". It's generally offensive how they think they/them means non-binary and expect us to make that connection. I'm not saying that Non-binary people shouldn't/don't use they/them, they can and most do. But gender isn't about pronouns and nor are genders connected to pronouns. An enby person may use he/him but still identify as no gender. It makes Non-Binary people sound like 'quirkey' people who use they/them - which they aren't. I wish they would flesh out an normalise gender identities aswell as do their research instead of just slapping a figuartive they/them badge on a character.
I was watching MH since 2010 until 2018... I cannot believe how much it got ruined. They threw the entire original MH out the window to redo it. I blame the Nick channel entirely for this idea.
I don’t know if anyone else has watched the sneak peek of the show yet. But it was so boring. The dialogue had me rolling my eyes and I couldn’t handle it even like five minutes in. They tried world building and it fell flat on its face. It sucks this movie was exactly what every one was expecting. Apparently according to another review Frankie kept saying “Hi my pronouns are-“ way too often as well and the final fight was lackluster and dull. I’m assuming the music isn’t up to par either since no one is really talking about it. Which sucks cause I love musical movies. Oh well, I almost feel bad it was a flop. At least it seems their toys are selling ok? But they’ll probably scrap it in a year or two. Let’s try again in another few years. 😅😂
The movie was okay. I didn't have my expectations too high or too low since it is a nickelodeon movie. Some parts I like, there were definitely some parts they could have kept.
@goldengamer170 Sarcasm (i hope) G4 of Monster High is a disaster so far especially if you take a look at some of the clips of the upcoming series imo.
@@naquingreen1603 the movie and the new cartoon are gen 3. not saying you're wrong, but a bit confused, probably because the gen 2 reboot was so short. only two majors movies, a short live mini series and some special before going on a very long hiatus
Nah. There's too many eyes on Monster High as a brand. FiM was a crazy fluke that only happened because it was more or less a throwaway IP in the late 00s, and the showrunners went ham on it despite nobody expecting anything of them. They also weren't american, so that probably helped.
Apart from physical appearances the only real changes that they made to Frankie was that they are now in the LGBTQ plus community and also there now comic relief I can’t be the only one who’s sick and tired of seeing the queer community and POC people get treated just like comic relief I know Frankie isn’t really POC but they’re now a part of the queer community and that makes me upset to see isn’t this supposed to be progressive?
3:13 I am sorry but, WHAT THE FUCK DID THEY DO TO ABBY?! THAT'S NOT ABBY ANYMORE! Now I know how boomers feel when their childhood cartoons gets an awful reboot or an awful animated movie or an awful live action movie....it sucks, it really sucks....
I would be more forgiving to this movievi if it was it own thing and not Monster High but it still wouldn't be good and hate i what they did to Cleo she deserved better
I thought in monster high were-creatures was like the wolf man a humanoid animal you know Well in the og series they still had monsters being racist/xenophobic to other monster and some humans mostly adults was pretty horrible, teenagers Who are usually like the stereotypical football bullies were awful to like the only reason most the teenagers were being awful to monsters was because van Helen‘s like granddaughter was friends with them so you know she’s fueling their behavior Like this monster high is boy like they still stereotype like two or three monsters like if they are more human like I guess The whole thing about witches make sense like lot of people forget pagans exists so monsters not liking witches would make sense like we’ll get a background probably how Pagans at practice witchcraft being shown from society hunting down by other humans and eventually monsters were like hey we know the feeling we can hang out and eventually one or two which is being genuinely awful started a war probably with the vampires because that’s the only explanation it’s gonna be one or two people who caused the most problems for everyone else Also it is kind of weird because it feels like a typical Nickelodeon project but at the same time very Disney Channel like at the same time the musics really good though that’s the one thing Monster High kind of kept I do like the design so they are basing them off of prototypes that the dolls had at the time Also Frankie honestly is carrying this movie I hope that we do get more to flush out the live action version in monster high at least maybe we know that the most favorite one would be a Frankie centric movie people would feel like it’s the old series because Frankie was the one character in that one
Spoiler Alert !!!!! The movie was awful. Not true to the characters. Clawdeens siblings ? Her mum? The accents were off too....disgusting. thanks for this. I'm sad I watched it.
It's been confirmed that the movie and TV series are not going to be in the same continuity, they're going to be their own separate universe. Aside from that, I think people are being a bit too harsh towards something that's just started by comparing it to a series that ran for years and has more content. I love Monster High but let's not pretend that it was as nuanced either. The og series had its fair share of cliches and stereotypes, we just became more forgiving of it when we started to see development of the characters. We can get blinded by nostalgia sometimes and forget that the things we love weren't always perfect. Again, I love Monster High but I also want to give this new series a chance. I don't feel the condescending attitude that the previous reboot had, and it is trying to be it's own thing despite using established characters. It's not the first reboot to change things from the original source, so as long as it can deliver something fun, that's all I'm asking.
This movie is supposed to draw new fans in. And I think it's doing a better job at that than G2 did. The world and characters have potential and the movie's message about self-acceptance is clear. That's not to say it does everything well. Like you said, there are a lot of things that raise questions. Like Clawdeen turning into a human when she's nervous, but not at the beginning when she's getting chased. Cleo and Bloodgood were unlikeable and Lagoona was almost a background character. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed the movie as it was, and I think it did well in setting the ground and tone for G3.
i mean with the inconsistency you cant really complain about cause its a movie made for kids and they dont pay attention and its for them not us but your arguments are valid
That image of Draculaura casting magic out of a toilet was not something I expected from monster high
Oh no! My potion's gonna explode!!
That's my thought seeing that image.
That would’ve been funny if it was a completely new character and if they didn’t have the stupid anti-witchcraft non-plot point.
They changed every damn thing.
it looks like an f'ing meme template
I don't mind people trying new things, but it in rest would not be place for it. 😒
Took the words right ought of my mouth, ma’am. Excellent summation of why this didn’t work.
As a long time monster high fan. This was a sad thing to see cause its been a minute since we've seen monster high stuff

What I loved about monster high was how it subverted my expectations. I saw the ads and my first thought was "oh I guess Cleo is the usual mean girl."
Then I watched it and yeah she was abrasive and a bit snobby but she didn't actually fit into that mean girl trope/cliche.
They cleverly and cutely subverted so much of it. Only for this movie to turn around and make it into the very thing it avoided being.
See exactly
They’ve profited and destroyed my whole childhood
@@guppy1821 Lmao Monster High was already a product made to profit off children from the get go. This movie is nothing new.
It also bothers me that both Clawdeen parents are renamed. Instead of Clawrk and Harriet they are Apollo and Selena. So disappointing.

It's funny how a lot of these companies try to sell these reboots through nostalgia. Yet they always enjoy stepping on everything that people loved.
Literally, they could not care less about the original material and what made it so special.

I'm glad this movie didn't win the choice awards, like they were nominated for the best movie?! 😂😂
It's, a bit ok I know people hated it and said it was the worst movie, it was 😁 but nickelodeon crew and of course mattel shouldn't have changed the characters' storyline, it supposed to stick to the original that we grew up watching
The movie just looks like new Disney Channel shlock. The whole thing about being unaccepted based on "race" or "species" or whatever was done far better in G1 in several ways:
- As you mentioned, Jackson Jekyll was a primary example.
I've said that the "creators " of this reboot either never saw OG Monster High or didn't understand it. I still believe that.
Monster High reboot: You either die the hero or live long enough to become the villian
Nowadays they will never let things die with dignity.
I don't think that point hits the same when the writers are different.
(Sigh...how did they somehow mess up the Base Concept of monster high!?!?)
(Edit: Great!
I agree and even in the OG monster high they weren't ever scared of the humans, they were distant rivals at best

This might actually be Monster High's final/last chance because the last time they rebooted Monster High Universal and Hasbro instantly gave up on it. Looking at the already negative impact this live action movie and the upcoming new Animated series have gotten. I have a sour feeling that Universal and Nickelodeon will give up on Monster High once again.
0:39 So, she's a... werewewolf?
In the original monster high the werewolves both have Human and wolf features but in g1 they weren't technically half human. In g1 it was like they were born as a wolf Monster snd when they were cubs they look like normal wolves and when they grow older they start to have a bit of a more human body form but still remain with the fur, wolf ears and fangs. Same goes for the werecats in G1 Monster high
J, you sounded so sad toward the end of the video. I can’t say I blame you, though. Thanks for watching this movie, you really didn’t have to.
Didnt know Monster HIgh was sponsered by the Disney Channel.
The live action yes. Now mattel copying the people that copied them in the first place
This is the perfect example of two things. One) this is what happens when people decide to remake an IP but never understanding the characters or the world. Two) not everything needs a live action version.
I'm still depressed about MH
Of course Monster High hates humans and other monsters now; otherwise, we couldn't have a plot.
Good point
The Japanese do this better, in 'Princess Resurrection' and 'Rosario Vampire'. Hell, 'Princess Resurrection' even has a half-werewolf who faced discrimination from other werewolves, with the exception of a loving half-brother who's a full werewolf!
Maybe they should have just come up with a better plot.

Modern films and racism allegories. Name a better duo. My God, I'm getting sick of that overused trope.
Anime and manga have use that trope for years
The older mh movie (ghouls rule) has racism allegories, so what?
That was actually handled somewhat well though. This is just “humans and/or certain kinds of monsters BAD”
@@mistysh7717 The difference is that Monster High (the school, not the series) was overall very accepting, practically post-racial; at the very least, it wasn’t a place where prejudice was tolerated. This movie just feels like the standard Racism Story.
Other than the original Monster High, the only other modern movie that did this well was Zootopia.
As another black person, I know how you feel
I ain't black, but I did find it kinda sad that Clawdeen was just a lighter skinned and less sassy, stylish version of herself
2:18 despite duece being a gorgon he did say he was a troublemaker last yesr, so that's probably why the headmistress has an eye on him
Right, that's fair. But then she goes on to say that Gorgons are always trouble. That isn't really fair to put them all in a box. And if they do act the same, why say something like that? This whole movie was one big fanfiction omg
“Monster High the Movie doesn't feel like Monster High” i could not agree more because most of the recreation just make it not them at all
I'd assume that even as you're right about the teacher's enthusiasm - the headmistress who was written to "blast" an innocent guy just because of his race; in a school that in this iteration had rejected a half human monster once already, would probably be less enthused about her gumption to go for this project than wanting to know what motive Clawdeen had.
The fact that she is using a toilet as a cauldron in the thumbnail sums up how modern remakes in the last 6 years have been made
another inconsistency: draculaura is taiwanese in the cartoon but filipino in the movie,
also most slavs and aussies don't hate the accents, and are insulted by the nationalism of making them american (especially the slavic ones).

Sound good?
not that you can't dislike great scarrier reef, but it is a make a wish foundation movie, thats probably why it was handled differently
Surprised that Frankie had less complaints, other than her collections of hands and no prosthetic leg in the movie. Which is weird because if the writers made Frankie "they," then why no prosthetic leg either?
It seems like Frankie is going to be a different character movie vs doll. I doubt they'll put "they/them" at the back of the doll's box.
It doesn’t feel the same as when I’d spend hours watching Friday night frights on repeat 💔
Half werewolf half human mean she is 1/4 wolf?
I find it funny that monster high's fans are going through the exact same thing that transformers fans went through. Even to having the different generations and reboots yet the first iteration was/is considered the best.

If we get a g1 movie I’m willing to be kids would rather watch that version
If Nickelodeon is capable to make nightmares on kids show (like they did in the 90s) then Monster High would've been a great choice!
It felt cheap. The show was already inclusive but they ruined it by making it exclusive, especially at the beginning of the movie. Treating everyone monsters differently and not the same. I just felt so wrong.

Draculaura tries to eat people???
Isn't she vegan, like-
there were many webisodes about her being vegan.
Thanks for the review J. Sorry the movie was a bust.🤷♂️
Sarcasm (i hope) G4 of Monster High is a disaster so far especially if you take a look at some of the clips of the upcoming series imo.
Of course. Clawdeen is a NERD
They didn't even try with deuce.
I’m more of a fan of the older Monster High. I don’t care for the modern ones.
So Harry Potter meets Hotel Transylvania?
Apart from physical appearances the only real changes that they made to Frankie was that they are now in the LGBTQ plus community and also there now comic relief I can’t be the only one who’s sick and tired of seeing the queer community and POC people get treated just like comic relief I know Frankie isn’t really POC but they’re now a part of the queer community and that makes me upset to see isn’t this supposed to be progressive?
Monster High: "so don't be afraid of who you are"
Monster High Movie: We don't do that here
its like they didnt read the source material or ignored it to push there bs
Not even monster high anymore it’s creature school
This sounds mediocre and dissapointing.
Dracula is played by a Scotsman actually
Oops, I didn't actually look into the actor. I could just tell the accent was fake. XP
@@mjtannertwins True indeed
First of all this G3 Ofcourse they need to change something and I think their new style is kinda cool this is my opinion
I think they should have changed the characters' names if they're going to make them so different from the original incarnations.
I thought in monster high were-creatures was like the wolf man a humanoid animal you know
Well in the og series they still had monsters being racist/xenophobic to other monster and some humans mostly adults was pretty horrible, teenagers Who are usually like the stereotypical football bullies were awful to like the only reason most the teenagers were being awful to monsters was because van Helen‘s like granddaughter was friends with them so you know she’s fueling their behavior
Like this monster high is boy like they still stereotype like two or three monsters like if they are more human like I guess
The whole thing about witches make sense like lot of people forget pagans exists so monsters not liking witches would make sense like we’ll get a background probably how Pagans at practice witchcraft being shown from society hunting down by other humans and eventually monsters were like hey we know the feeling we can hang out and eventually one or two which is being genuinely awful started a war probably with the vampires because that’s the only explanation it’s gonna be one or two people who caused the most problems for everyone else
Also it is kind of weird because it feels like a typical Nickelodeon project but at the same time very Disney Channel like at the same time the musics really good though that’s the one thing Monster High kind of kept I do like the design so they are basing them off of prototypes that the dolls had at the time
Also Frankie honestly is carrying this movie I hope that we do get more to flush out the live action version in monster high at least maybe we know that the most favorite one would be a Frankie centric movie people would feel like it’s the old series because Frankie was the one character in that one
Clawdeen eats tamales.
In my country the non binary thing of Frankie was censored.
The actor is transgender
@@jennajanuary5065 I can't fucking care less
It was super dissapointing, the best charasteristic of monster high was the acceptance of others
Spoiler Alert !!!!! The movie was awful. Not true to the characters. Clawdeens siblings ? Her mum? The accents were off too....disgusting. thanks for this. I'm sad I watched it.
WHAT THE FLIP FLOP FLIPPIDY DOO DID THEY DO TO ABBY AND LAGOONA
The only somewhat decently good thing about the movie was some of the songs... I guess
I hate live action.
“Cleo had a lot of layers in the original.” so you’re saying she was an ogre? I’ll leave now I’m not funny
ok so like i actually can't stand this movie, but the teacher tho---
IMy mom hated it I didn't watch it
👌🗿
Yeah my lil sister did not like this
Honestly, i know i will love the animated serie a lot more
It's been confirmed that the movie and TV series are not going to be in the same continuity, they're going to be their own separate universe.
Just because something is meant for kids doesn't mean it can't be criticized.
I saw the trailer and based off that I refuseddddd to watch it lol 😂
The Monster high movie stinks
I love the movie i DONT like people making fun of it they took so long ti make it jeez!
lmao Dracula’s actor is actually British
its different because its a REBOOT
Then why didn't they change the character names if they were supposed to be so different from the og?
