Also to add on to Cleo’s lack of bandages. The bandages were so important for her character. Not just because she was a mummy. But because the bandages that her whole family wears was enchanted and is the reason they were able to come back to life. The lack of bandages is very much criminal and kills basically her whole backstory
The best thing about Monster High is that it is extremely fashinoble, before you even realize the plot and everything you realize the clothings and It is designed in a way to reflect the characters personalities best. Just like Lisa said outfits has a umph to them so without that effect It'll not be the same show unfortunately no matter what they do. Because outfits and fashion is tied to the core of the show.
But this is still a movie for children. Like I'm all for dragging the costume designers of the Winx Club TV show because THAT was made for young adults, but in this case it makes sense for the outfits to be more conservative and child-like. Those outfits might not appeal to adults, but I can totally see a little girl wanting to wear some of those outfits. They'll be selling Halloween outfit copies of this for sure.
@@NinjaKittkatt I would say different tbh. The original Monster High dolls and movies were still marketed towards children and preteens whilst being incredibly fashionable. The outfits might not have been the most appropriate but the market was not teens/ya, also the Halloween costumes that were made were altered to be more modest for children. Honestly, I just feel like the poor outfits took away from what we love about the characters

To me it looks like a group of friends that didn’t have the money to get themselves the cheap (but more recognizable) mh costumes from party city but strangely all had something in their closet that COULD work, but got them explaining their look to everyone at the party. Probably not the best for a full on set production and shit

I don't know how his power works but wouldn't it make more sense to give him contact lenses so they aren't technically looking into his eyes instead of the glasses. If this is a show they could even have an episode where he losses his contact lenses and has to wear sunglasses as a throwback to the cartoon.

I feel like a lot of cartoon to live action stylings (ahem, winx) are too afraid to follow kooky, more eccentric clothes for fear of making it too “strange” on real people. True. They always make it cheap and try to make it look realistic which actually kills it and makes it unrelatable to an extreme level… like alternative people and subcultures and different styles are real and monster high both were inspired by them and inspired many people to go in that direction… they look like people in costumes instead of characters and what is worse they look like people in costumes PRETENDING to be said characters. I’m not saying that they should hire cosplayers for everything but should get inspiration from them that people love the actual look, that it’s not as expensive as it may seem to make propper props and outfits… and that acting is bad as well. the biggest issue is that whoever is making these outfits/costumes doesnt really know how to style different body types. like you said, the lenghts of the skirts and sleeves is not right for them, its okay to use scissors ! and use layers to have interesting shapes and fabrics ! accesories, hairstyles and makeup are essential for these types of shows, and its all wrong. but its really not something impossible to fix and make it work, they dont have to change entire wardrobes imo.

I think thats a nickelodeon thing. They've even had issues with girls wearing tank tops for years, so they would layer long sleeve or short sleeve shirts under them. Victorious was probably one of the first shows that the girls wore shorts and shorter dresses but I don't think that stuck sadly. But even then 9 times out of 10 everyone was in jeans and a long sleeve shirt....in CA I'm pretty sure.....

Claudine is a werewolf she can even see in the dark but they gave her glasses?😂 otherwise where is her choker/collar? Lagoona's hair is originally wavy blonde with blue stripes which makes you think of water immediately, now her hair looks like cotton candy. is she a sea monster or a candy monster? Cleo's hair wouldn't be an issue if they incorporated the gold in other parts of her outfit. her whole thing is that she is rich af and adores gold. like massive gold she would never be so modest as to only include a few goldish straps. I'm not even gonna mention the boys, these people managed to make Duce of all people look plain. Franky's outfit didn't have any stripes, that's all I need to say.
I saw in the video snippet that Cleo's hair has more gold straps, but it looks strange, I think they should've done proper sections of them to make it look good
I agree 100% with everything but the clawdeen wearing glasses part. I mean yes it throws off the character but don't forget clawdeens sister wore glasses. (Can't remember her name but she wasn't the youngest one she was clawdeens older sister in the Scaris movie) But yeah they shouldn't have put glasses on her since her original character never wore it.

I think for Frankie’s “leggings” they should have gone for a mesh tights material and used light stitching details to go with the Frankenstein theme. I also would have preferred to she her in like matching cropped vest and mini skirt in a scholarly black and thin white pinstripe pattern with a thinner white collared shirt that is unbuttoned from where the vest ends. Also a chunky pair of Oxford shoes she’s was always very scholarly and collegiate while still being edgy so they should have modernized and played into it.

I don’t know why but I feel like Lagoona’s outfit just reminds me of Justice clothing. Justice clothing but for like teenagers. Like the clothing you would see in the summer at a Justice store, mermaid scales print and all. Lagoonas name is literally Lagoona blue. I screamed seeing how dirty they did lagoona. It doesn't look like the same character at all. Draculara really stole Casta's whole job now. She needs frills though like a petticoat or something . The costumes are so weirdly unfashionable. Like the whole theme of the doll line was the fashion.
It really confused me in the trailer in Draculaura’s part where they said sth along the lines of “witchcraft being a dirty human thing” like they don’t have witches in the Monster High Universe, they do, Casta Fierce is a singer that is also a witch in the Monster High Universe and also happens to be inspired by Beyoncé, said character also has a little brother that appears in the books
I think this movie is about them hating half humans at first so maybe witches in this universe are misunderstood as being a dirty human habit. Once half humans are accepted thats when they bring in witches to monster high with the help of draculara.

Oh, I'm so disappointed rn, because I think we all know the HUGE potential this movie could have had in terms of art direction. Really, each character had a very unique and very marked style, which I don't really see here (Draculaura with more victorian vibes, Frankie being kind of "preppy", Lagoona more sporty, etc) I understand that they had a low budget, but even so I think that they could have played better with some elements to have better results. By the way, I think the one I have the most problems with is Lagoona, if it weren't for the fins on her legs, it would give me more vibes that she is the daughter of a unicorn or a fairy than a sea monster, too "rainbowy" I think Btw, sorry if my english isn't the best
Seeing Deuce without sunglasses made me a bit shocked, or rather, stone faced (kill me) because I already knew the girls won't be the best, but damn, they slaughtered everyone. I do understand the difficulty in finding appropriate clothes to represent characters but seeing Chleo in her current state made a part of my soul tear up.
They could have put Draculaura in lolita fashion! It’s grown way more popular over the last decade, and it has the Victorian inspiration that her original style had. It would be the perfect way to modernize her!
These are all kinds of tragic, but Lagoona’s makes me actively angry lol. They clearly didn’t even try. Turned her into a child who wants to play pretend influencer… except that her actor looks like an adult. All their actors look like adults. The teacher look the same age as the students. Drac is probably the best one? It’s not amazing but it still reads Draculaura at least.
The guy who plays Frankie was playing a high schooler on Girl Meets World: a series that ended six years ago. At the very least he's an adult, but I don't know anything about the other actors.
My oldest was obsessed with monster high. I have made several costumes. Mostly thrifted items and I have to say any amount they spent on wardrobe was an absolute waste. They missed big. In the time of you tube fame they could have had actual cosplayers design the looks. There is plenty of reference material.

Dracu has to be pink and Clawdeen is all purple.

Honestly most cosplayers are regular people of the public, but if even these people (who aren't getting paid to do it!) are able to tackle Monster High fashion than the actual creators and artistic directors of this movie then something is obviously wrong. There's no excuse, they just suck at their job. How did they get their degrees? I'm also astounded as to why they just don't invest in buying cosplays of their own merchandise online if they can't commission a proper seamstress to do it, it's a much better alternative than the clothing mess they came up with. If they're gonna make a movie, make it right. Of course, I still applaud them for trying. Unlike Winx Saga.

The skirt lengths are so awkward, I don’t understand why they went that direction. I also believe since this is a mattel product after all- that due to their conservative values and their current teams not really caring about fashion- there’s this mentality on the company that as long as its for kids, just slap loud colors and prints and that’s it- as if kids didn’t deserve any sort of good quality product. And it’s weird because the most successful doll lines in the market today like LOL OMG, Rainbow High and it’s spin off Shadow high- are extremely fashionable and edgy- even forcing Mattel to produce barbie extra and it’s been theorized that monster high was brought back because of rainbow- and shadow high. But Again, current Mattel is always missing the mark because of this mentality, and completely missed why these fashion doll brands are selling so much. I fear this new reboot will fail just like the 2016 did- they’ve been incapable of understanding what made Monster High was special, and still want to pump out poorly designed products made with even poorer quality.
yeah all of the conservative values are poison to creativity and quality in children's media. They care more about the lengths of skirts than having their kids watch something with creative value. Draculaura being obsessed with witchcraft makes no sense. When her character was more focused on being a slightly naive girly girl obsessed with mainstream modern trends and boys. It was ironic because she was so old. It seems their writing her as someone who partakes in witchcraft as a way of rebellion from the way the trailer frames it. Draculaura wasn’t really that kind of character though. In fact she was one of the more easily manipulated characters. And She dated Claude and was vegetarian because she wanted to not because she was trying to make a statement. Plus they make sense as traits. Because she is a vampire. So her being vegetarian and having a werewolf boyfriend makes sense.

It's not the most offensive thing in the world, unlike Winx Saga. I'm really happy they didn't shy away from face paint and kitschy aesthetics, the movie just suffers from dated and simplistic styling. I'm forgiving since this is a low budget TV movie but I have friends who get most their clothes second hand and they can produce more interesting and current looks. I feel like even though there was effort, they still settled on just getting the gist of the characters rather than actually trying to emulate their fashion. Also, super confused about Deuce. I can answer some questions you had in this video! Us doll collectors believe that lagoona’s skin wasn’t painted because on the new animated series (yes, this reboot will also get a series on nickelodeon) lagoona’s skin is pink. So we theorize they didn’t paint the actress skin so that she didn’t look too much like Draculaura AND to not reveal right away that lagoona will have a new skin tone. Frankie is also indeed more blue- her skin is going to be blue in the animation. Deuce is getting green skin. Cleo’s main color changed from gold to blue on the animated series so the lack of flavor in the live action styling makes sense too. The clothing on the series seems inspired by the live action clothing- they kinda look like 3d version of the movie, so there’s not much hope for the animation either. The fashion are definitely outdated- not surprising coming from Mattel- they’ve turned extremely conservative in the past few years- just look at barbie (they don’t give her ANY heels or makeup, or even fashionable outfits anymore)- their attempts to compete with MGA (Bratz, Lol OMG, Rainbow High) was barbie EXTRA and if you look trough the barbie EXTRA looks and compare with the LOL OMG looks you’ll clearly see Mattel’s higher ups definitely don’t really care about fashion- more so about keeping a good appearance to conservatives. So I’m not surprised this new gen of Mosnter high isn’t fashionable- there’s even rumours the new dolls will be having FLAT FEET based on a leaked sketch of the animated designs- so yeah… no cute mini skirts, no high heels… they’re too afraid nowadays to risk going “edgy” or “trendy”, it’s bad for Mattel. Wait, since when did Mattel appeal to conservatives? They released their first gender neutral doll in 2019 and they seemed to be pretty progressive... I assumed their boring fashion choices were to increase profit margins. If you don't spend as much on clothes and accessories, you can earn more money than the companies who charge slightly more for their dolls but spend more money on clothes.

Monster High is some of the most genuinely fashionable series I have seen (the other being Ever After High and old Winx Club), so technically they should be able to make a very visually interesting show...if they actually cared to put the money into the costume department. But I had low expectations because of what they did to the live action Winx Club. I am sorry, but America(?) has no right to criticize Japan for their live actions at this point.
My brutally honest take on this entire thing: This is really giving the live action Powerpuff girls and I do not approve. I love the idea that it's a bit different plotwise but fashion wise... it's a NO. The execution as well is questionable. The film is giving $300 and as you said, 2012. Like the kids bop of Monster High. Even with that budget, it could've been better.

Its like they made the outfits blander but the accessories chunkier, all while not doing enough on the parts that identify them as supernatural. like you can barely see Clawdeen's ears in the picture because of how they've been photoshopped against the moon. Or Cleo is royalty, it makes a lot of sense to have more gold in her hair to give the hint of a headdress but also because aristocratic ancient egyptains were known to wear human hair wigs where sections were covered in gold beads or ribbons. Though most of these wigs were black, Queen Nefertiti was known for wearing dark blue wigs with festival wigs being gilded in gold so they might have accidentally stumbled into a historical reference but visually I think it would be better to find a way to add more gold to her hair
I think thrift shops do offer better clothes, and I saw many fashionable people go there. I think thrift shops would have been the solution, especially if they wanted to keep the 2010s fashions.
The live action’s styling really hurts like when you look at the animated webisodes the characters have a gorgeous and very detailed outfits and when it comes to animation it is harder to do when the clothing is more detailed but the live action has such plain clothing like where are the details? The patterns? The live action has no excuse it’s not like putting actually good clothes on the actors is a lot of effort, a lot of the clothes seemed like they came from 2010s like I literally have the tights live action Frankie was wearing and I DiYed those when I was 13. (The hair and bandages). also where's Ghoulia? she was almost always by her side. ● Duece wears glasses now? I mean I see what they went for, so the viewers could see his eyes, but I think it would've been more fun for him to have shades, and maybe have a part of the movie where he pulls them down (due to an enemy?) and the viewers could finally see what his eyes looked like. I'm not even going to bring up his outfit. will he actually have to snake print on his arm, showing that he's a gorgon? ●Heath, he seems...a lot older? idk it's a vibe I get from the actor. and replacing black with blue? eh. ● Final Note, I understand that this is probably low budget, but even with low budget I feel like they didn't try hard enough. even the acting seems kinda grade C. where's the spunk? where's the charisma? i suspect that, assuming most of the actors are children, costume choices are made for efficiency when changing them into and out of costume to not go over child actor labor laws, which is why so many of the costumes are simplified. there are obvious remedies to their costuming budget that can otherwise only be chalked up to a terrible costume document. just wack frankie couldve gotten plaid leggings. tacky? yes. but it wouldve lended more. cleo couldve gotten a yard of gold ribbon for $2 on amazon and started draping as a finishing touch. someone on set couldve thrifted some demonia shakers for clawdeen. lagoona is…entirely off. just a complete miss. its in the details :(

Absolutely heartbroken at what they dud to my girl Draculaura :( what always drew me in about her was her gothic style, she doesn't look *right* in this movie anymore, I think the outfit is kinda cute, yeah, but not for Draculaura, shorten her skirt and/or puff it out, also it makes no sense for them to make her a sorceress, she's Dracula's daughter! Dude! Don't tell me you're suddenly breaking the rules to your own universe! About the rest… why would they give Clawdeen glasses, seriously, why, also I think a leather jacket would have done much nicer, otherwise I'm pretty ok with the outfit. Lagoona does not look like Lagoona, I don't understand why they made her pink stick out so much, the pink should be used as complementary, or retcon her as a unicorn's daughter, just… why :( Frankie is… well, got the same problem as Draculaura, honestly they should have just gone for ripped up fishnets or something, leggings just aren't really it for her, or used knee-high stockings? Dunno, but I don't think leggings was the right option. Her skirt looks like one of those skirts you see profesional people like receptionists or flight attendants wear, by the way, it's a cute outfit but not for Frankie. Kleo honestly is just a disappointment, her color is gold, yellow, brown, not blue. The boys looks like they were shoved into some sort of stereotype like jock n stuff, very weird, they should have gone for a slick-back hairstyle for the fire guy by the way, his hair makes it look like someone set his hair on fire, not that he is the fire. Conclusion: They just don't feel like Monster High characters, the team probably tried, but not hard enough. The brand was literally built on fashion, it's pretty disappointing to see the decline of something that marked your childhood, you know?

Deuce especially reminds me of shy/awkward kids that either don't want to draw attention or don't know how to dress themselves yet, which is the opposite of what MH is. For the weird sorceress thing I think they were trying to play into the witch/dark academia trend and shoehorned it onto Draculaura, despite it being irrelevant to her character. Same with Lagoona and the pastel mermaid trend, which I agree could've worked, been awesome even, if her outfit wasn't so dorky.
I think the reason lagoona isn't painted to match the original version is because it might wash off when she goes in the water so they decided to skip it all together? But yeah I gotta agree they went too idk 2014-ish casual and I feel like they could have made the outfits more 'modest' without taking away the bite that the originals had :/ or at LEAST stay more on topic with the specific style the character had

May I add a few things into the conversation about the costuming (based on additional news about the movie): - Actors, who paly background chaaracters, are dressed on par with the main cast; - Despite a small budget, they gave Draculaura's dad a classy vampire attire (with a cape of three layers); - In one of the musical numbers Lagoona's dress lenght is far above the knees (when compared to the skirts of other characters)/ Note that Lagoona dances in it too; - Clawdeen (so far) has three looks, which consist of the same type of pieces (right down to the details on some of them): a jacket, a slim skirt and a top with print on it; - Draculaura's neck accessory seems to be made out of paper-type material (from what I can tell); - Clawdeen's crescent top might be a real Marine Serre piece aka a designer item; - Abbey's costumes are very bright (and she will most likely be a secondary character/backgroubder). The more I look at the costumes, the more I question what was going on in the costuming department.
the first this i said when i saw the outfits was "it looks like a walmart version". like honestly, it was supposed to reflect the character's personality, but also give of overachiever, but from a second-hand store vibe (hiding from people etc), and it comes of like... like what i thought a "good look and style" was in 2nd grade of primary school, but because of the age-inappropriate casting it looks worse and like they are trying their little siblings' clothes, imo but like you said, it looks like they tried and that's more than i get to say about SO MANY productions lately, so i have hope for the movie itself :) i think that my comment comes off really negative, and that wasn't my intention at all. the budget that they got probably screwed them over a BUNCH, that's still nickelodeon and cable tv now is pretty much replaced by streaming services, so they get the bare minimum, even if something is someone's passion project, but still, it looks like someone sat down and tried to do the original justice, just the cards that they were given were ...not enough? i think is the best expression i can come up with right now but like i said, i still have hope (especially for the script)!

I saw the trailer yesterday and I have so many problems that I do not even know where to start. It looks like they copied the fashion disaster that is Winx saga and tried to make a 'darker' version and it just doesn't work. I'll start with Draculaura because she's probably the only one who looks fine to me - the hair is reasonable, the skin color is reasonable to the original character and doesn't really deviate from it and the outfit in a cute but creepy vibe that is her style. We will continue with Clawdine because with her I probably have the least problems - the ears. These ears are not wolf ears in any way, too pointed, too straight and thay placed them too forward on her head! The glasses bother me some, but what bothers me the most is the fact that they made her nerdy in the most stereotypical way possible! - glasses, loves school, not good at social relationships. What even. Her skirt is also too short as she sits in the last section of the trailer and her clothes in general are just ... mahh. Frankie ... Oh ghols no. What is this thing Wrong skin color (half the time seems too blue and half the time too green and all the time is much too strong), wrong hair, not enough stitching, her costumes are a horror of bad color combinations and bad textures, where is the Dark Academy or the Preppy School Girl she is ?? ? Cleo. . . where Is The GOLD. Why is she wearing so much black, her colors are yellow, gold and light blue, where are they??? Every one of her outfits is an artistic horror that Cleo would never have worn, what the hell?! Lagoona does not look like Lagoona, skin color is wrong, hair color is wrong and has nothing to do with the original Lagoona, she does not even look like a sea creature! She looks like a unicorn! Like someone generic from Tiktok! And why is she not nice and they connected her to Cleo when in the series she is one of Frankie's first girlfriends and she's an insanely cute monster ?? I also have serious problems with Heath and Deuce and Ghoulia and Abbye but you can concentrate them all on- Clothes that are too simple or that do not fit the characters at all (they put an ice monster. In a fur coat. Which hides all of her. She has elements of fur in the og design in the series but this is a wild exaggeration), behaviors that do not fit the characters, wrong skin colors (Heath is yellow! Not pumpkin orange!) And visible contempt for the characters, their designs and what they represent to people. Deuce suffered a lot because it turns out that now he too is a stereotypical nerd who starts something with Clasdine for some reason??? And his glasses are regular with clear lenses and not sunglasses??? How does it work with the fact that he's fucking Gorgon and whoever looks at his eyes becomes a statue??? And his hair is no longer snakes??? He also looks like someone from Tiktok And Heath and Frankie represent a big problem I have with the whole production- they didn't seem to have any ideas for monsters so they decided to paint people in body paint and say it's enough to be a monster and it looks awful Seriously the trailer made me sad, Monster High is an amazing series and according to the trailer this movie does not do it justice

I feel like Frankie's design is maybe based more on the recent iteration of Monster High (the era they softly rebooted the dolls and had those 2 movies where they completely rewrote the origin of monster High school and stuff). I only think so because in the Electrified movie and so her skin is more blue coloured and she does wear a outfit more similar to this than the original one from where she first debuted. And like the whole reboot was to make Monster High less edgy and more appealing to younger kids, so that's why they look more conservative.

I personally love all of them, maybe except for the boys, I don’t know I just focus on the gworls 💅🏻 so I don’t really mind them, but all the hate the actors have been getting is so undeserved and so triggering that people attack them instead of the director and people in ACTUAL charge of the costumes and make up. But in conclusion the actors don’t deserve the hate, and I personally like the outfits, and people need to understand that this is a reboot btw, so the point is basically… Just start everything all over again!

It started with Winx like seriously the girls on the show were always wearing amazing outfits and in " Fate" they look like they bought everything from the middle aged woman section. Monster High outfits were amazing because of toys, of course. The show had the fantastical aspect to it while the clothes brought aspects of every character personality as well as be mundane and awesome
Ex: if she is in the water she would have pink skin, and out of water she is blue,, it would work kinda like luca logic, whenever wet she has pink skin where she got wet at. And blue where it's dry.
Well that's a sponsor I never seen before, interesting! Now for the outfits, Clawdeen reminded me of her collector doll with the exact same fur coat, but the rest... I don't get it. And Cleo's blue was clearly a turquoise one (gemstone turquoise) not cobalt... She makes a good Steven Universe Lapis impression though. I think a lot of the clothings just lack patterns, add more plaid to Frankie, some printed lace to Draculora, they did it with Clawdeen so why not the others?
They took inspo from her Boo York outfit which is cobalt and a dark/bronzy gold. Don't know why they decided to use that movie when every one else is based on the show though.
From the new trailer they made Clawdeen a nerdy quirky girl instead of the girlboss she is, Frankie is Frankie, Draculaura is kinda like sassy? and I THINK THEY'RE PAIRING CLAWDEEN AND DEUCE

I mean, it makes sense if they're inspired by fashion from 2012 or around that time. It's a franchise that peaked in the early 2010s, a very unique time, especially for those who were growing up around that era. The style fits imo.
The most defining thing about the series is the extreme fashion and how every character is different in their expression of style. And that's the one thing they fuck up. It looks like cheap Ali express cosplays tbh. Or a Walmart closet cosplay. I get it if they had a small budget, but seriously. They really could have done better at least getting outfits that reflect the characters personality.
Also to add on to Cleo’s lack of bandages. The bandages were so important for her character. Not just because she was a mummy. But because the bandages that her whole family wears was enchanted and is the reason they were able to come back to life. The lack of bandages is very much criminal and kills basically her whole backstory

The best thing about Monster High is that it is extremely fashinoble, before you even realize the plot and everything you realize the clothings and It is designed in a way to reflect the characters personalities best. Just like Lisa said outfits has a umph to them so without that effect It'll not be the same show unfortunately no matter what they do. Because outfits and fashion is tied to the core of the show.

But this is still a movie for children. Like I'm all for dragging the costume designers of the Winx Club TV show because THAT was made for young adults, but in this case it makes sense for the outfits to be more conservative and child-like. Those outfits might not appeal to adults, but I can totally see a little girl wanting to wear some of those outfits. They'll be selling Halloween outfit copies of this for sure.

The outfits might not have been the most appropriate but the market was not teens/ya, also the Halloween costumes that were made were altered to be more modest for children. I’m not saying that they should hire cosplayers for everything but should get inspiration from them that people love the actual look, that it’s not as expensive as it may seem to make propper props and outfits… and that acting is bad as well. the biggest issue is that whoever is making these outfits/costumes doesnt really know how to style different body types. like you said, the lenghts of the skirts and sleeves is not right for them, its okay to use scissors ! and use layers to have interesting shapes and fabrics ! accesories, hairstyles and makeup are essential for these types of shows, and its all wrong. but its really not something impossible to fix and make it work, they dont have to change entire wardrobes imo.

I think thats a nickelodeon thing. They've even had issues with girls wearing tank tops for years, so they would layer long sleeve or short sleeve shirts under them. Victorious was probably one of the first shows that the girls wore shorts and shorter dresses but I don't think that stuck sadly.
But even then 9 times out of 10 everyone was in jeans and a long sleeve shirt....in CA I'm pretty sure.....

I think for Frankie’s “leggings” they should have gone for a mesh tights material and used light stitching details to go with the Frankenstein theme. I also would have preferred to she her in like matching cropped vest and mini skirt in a scholarly black and thin white pinstripe pattern with a thinner white collared shirt that is unbuttoned from where the vest ends. Also a chunky pair of Oxford shoes she’s was always very scholarly and collegiate while still being edgy so they should have modernized and played into it.

I wasn’t really a monster high kid, and I also knew that this wasn’t gonna be the best film because of the potentially low budget common for most Disney channel (or in this case Nickelodeon) movies, but I’m still disappointed

It really confused me in the trailer in Draculaura’s part where they said sth along the lines of “witchcraft being a dirty human thing” like they don’t have witches in the Monster High Universe, they do, Casta Fierce is a singer that is also a witch in the Monster High Universe and also happens to be inspired by Beyoncé, said character also has a little brother that appears in the books
I think this movie is about them hating half humans at first so maybe witches in this universe are misunderstood as being a dirty human habit. Once half humans are accepted thats when they bring in witches to monster high with the help of draculara.

Oh, I'm so disappointed rn, because I think we all know the HUGE potential this movie could have had in terms of art direction. Really, each character had a very unique and very marked style, which I don't really see here (Draculaura with more victorian vibes, Frankie being kind of "preppy", Lagoona more sporty, etc) I understand that they had a low budget, but even so I think that they could have played better with some elements to have better results.
By the way, I think the one I have the most problems with is Lagoona, if it weren't for the fins on her legs, it would give me more vibes that she is the daughter of a unicorn or a fairy than a sea monster, too "rainbowy" I think

Seeing Deuce without sunglasses made me a bit shocked, or rather, stone faced (kill me) because I already knew the girls won't be the best, but damn, they slaughtered everyone.
I do understand the difficulty in finding appropriate clothes to represent characters but seeing Chleo in her current state made a part of my soul tear up.
They could have put Draculaura in lolita fashion! It’s grown way more popular over the last decade, and it has the Victorian inspiration that her original style had. It would be the perfect way to modernize her!
These are all kinds of tragic, but Lagoona’s makes me actively angry lol. They clearly didn’t even try. Turned her into a child who wants to play pretend influencer… except that her actor looks like an adult. All their actors look like adults. The teacher look the same age as the students. Drac is probably the best one? It’s not amazing but it still reads Draculaura at least.

My oldest was obsessed with monster high. I have made several costumes. Mostly thrifted items and I have to say any amount they spent on wardrobe was an absolute waste. They missed big. In the time of you tube fame they could have had actual cosplayers design the looks. There is plenty of reference material.

Honestly most cosplayers are regular people of the public, but if even these people (who aren't getting paid to do it!) are able to tackle Monster High fashion than the actual creators and artistic directors of this movie then something is obviously wrong. There's no excuse, they just suck at their job. How did they get their degrees? I'm also astounded as to why they just don't invest in buying cosplays of their own merchandise online if they can't commission a proper seamstress to do it, it's a much better alternative than the clothing mess they came up with. If they're gonna make a movie, make it right. Of course, I still applaud them for trying. Unlike Winx Saga.

The skirt lengths are so awkward, I don’t understand why they went that direction. I was really hoping they were going to lean into the girls’ individual styles like Draculaura having inspiration from gothic lolita fashion and Frankie’s collegiate look. I think even a fashionable non-fan could have done a better job picking outfits that had that “spark”

I also believe since this is a mattel product after all- that due to their conservative values and their current teams not really caring about fashion- there’s this mentality on the company that as long as its for kids, just slap loud colors and prints and that’s it- as if kids didn’t deserve any sort of good quality product. And it’s weird because the most successful doll lines in the market today like LOL OMG, Rainbow High and it’s spin off Shadow high- are extremely fashionable and edgy- even forcing Mattel to produce barbie extra and it’s been theorized that monster high was brought back because of rainbow- and shadow high. But Again, current Mattel is always missing the mark because of this mentality, and completely missed why these fashion doll brands are selling so much. I fear this new reboot will fail just like the 2016 did- they’ve been incapable of understanding what made Monster High was special, and still want to pump out poorly designed products made with even poorer quality.
yeah all of the conservative values are poison to creativity and quality in children's media. They care more about the lengths of skirts than having their kids watch something with creative value. (Especially since parents were fine with buying dolls or letting kids watch characters with those short skirts before, for example)

I think by seeing the leaks of the rereboot dolls we can clearly say that MH dolls will be no competition to Rainbow/Shadow High or LOL Omg... so why even have another reboot, if in the end they just keep not committing themselves to make MH great again? Draculaura being obsessed with witchcraft makes no sense. When her character was more focused on being a slightly naive girly girl obsessed with mainstream modern trends and boys. It was ironic because she was so old. It seems their writing her as someone who partakes in witchcraft as a way of rebellion from the way the trailer frames it. Draculaura wasn’t really that kind of character though. In fact she was one of the more easily manipulated characters. And She dated Claude and was vegetarian because she wanted to not because she was trying to make a statement. Plus they make sense as traits. Because she is a vampire. So her being vegetarian and having a werewolf boyfriend makes sense.

It's not the most offensive thing in the world, unlike Winx Saga. I'm really happy they didn't shy away from face paint and kitschy aesthetics, the movie just suffers from dated and simplistic styling. I'm forgiving since this is a low budget TV movie but I have friends who get most their clothes second hand and they can produce more interesting and current looks. I feel like even though there was effort, they still settled on just getting the gist of the characters rather than actually trying to emulate their fashion.
Also, super confused about Deuce. They should do more than just a plain dude, even make his hair green and shave a part of it??? Like y'all. I just think it's weird they honed in on the camp for some characters then pulled it back for others.

I can answer some questions you had in this video! Us doll collectors believe that lagoona’s skin wasn’t painted because on the new animated series (yes, this reboot will also get a series on nickelodeon) lagoona’s skin is pink. So we theorize they didn’t paint the actress skin so that she didn’t look too much like Draculaura AND to not reveal right away that lagoona will have a new skin tone. Frankie is also indeed more blue- her skin is going to be blue in the animation. Deuce is getting green skin. Cleo’s main color changed from gold to blue on the animated series so the lack of flavor in the live action styling makes sense too. The clothing on the series seems inspired by the live action clothing- they kinda look like 3d version of the movie, so there’s not much hope for the animation either. The fashion are definitely outdated- not surprising coming from Mattel- they’ve turned extremely conservative in the past few years- just look at barbie (they don’t give her ANY heels or makeup, or even fashionable outfits anymore)- their attempts to compete with MGA (Bratz, Lol OMG, Rainbow High) was barbie EXTRA and if you look trough the barbie EXTRA looks and compare with the LOL OMG looks you’ll clearly see Mattel’s higher ups definitely don’t really care about fashion- more so about keeping a good appearance to conservatives. So I’m not surprised this new gen of Mosnter high isn’t fashionable- there’s even rumours the new dolls will be having FLAT FEET based on a leaked sketch of the animated designs- so yeah… no cute mini skirts, no high heels… they’re too afraid nowadays to risk going “edgy” or “trendy”, it’s bad for Mattel. There’s also a weird budget issue with Mattel- their dolls are always terrible quality for an crazy high price (compare the accessories, outfits and materials of a $25 barbie extra doll to a $30 rainbow high doll for example), so us collectors never really had much hope for the new dolls or movie looking good- but damn they couldn’t even hire a good stylist 😭😭💖💖

I assumed their boring fashion choices were to increase profit margins. If you don't spend as much on clothes and accessories, you can earn more money than the companies who charge slightly more for their dolls but spend more money on clothes.

Monster High is some of the most genuinely fashionable series I have seen (the other being Ever After High and old Winx Club), so technically they should be able to make a very visually interesting show...if they actually cared to put the money into the costume department. But I had low expectations because of what they did to the live action Winx Club. I am sorry, but America(?) has no right to criticize Japan for their live actions at this point.

This is really giving the live action Powerpuff girls and I do not approve. I love the idea that it's a bit different plotwise but fashion wise... it's a NO. The execution as well is questionable. The film is giving $300 and as you said, 2012. Like the kids bop of Monster High. Even with that budget, it could've been better.

Its like they made the outfits blander but the accessories chunkier, all while not doing enough on the parts that identify them as supernatural. like you can barely see Clawdeen's ears in the picture because of how they've been photoshopped against the moon.
Or Cleo is royalty, it makes a lot of sense to have more gold in her hair to give the hint of a headdress but also because aristocratic ancient egyptains were known to wear human hair wigs where sections were covered in gold beads or ribbons. Though most of these wigs were black, Queen Nefertiti was known for wearing dark blue wigs with festival wigs being gilded in gold so they might have accidentally stumbled into a historical reference but visually I think it would be better to find a way to add more gold to her hair
I think thrift shops do offer better clothes, and I saw many fashionable people go there. I think thrift shops would have been the solution, especially if they wanted to keep the 2010s fashions.
The live action’s styling really hurts like when you look at the animated webisodes the characters have a gorgeous and very detailed outfits and when it comes to animation it is harder to do when the clothing is more detailed but the live action has such plain clothing like where are the details? The patterns? The live action has no excuse it’s not like putting actually good clothes on the actors is a lot of effort, a lot of the clothes seemed like they came from 2010s like I literally have the tights live action Frankie was wearing and I DiYed those when I was 13. ● Duece wears glasses now? I mean I see what they went for, so the viewers could see his eyes, but I think it would've been more fun for him to have shades, and maybe have a part of the movie where he pulls them down (due to an enemy?) and the viewers could finally see what his eyes looked like. I'm not even going to bring up his outfit. will he actually have to snake print on his arm, showing that he's a gorgon?
●Heath, he seems...a lot older? idk it's a vibe I get from the actor. and replacing black with blue? eh.
● Final Note, I understand that this is probably low budget, but even with low budget I feel like they didn't try hard enough. even the acting seems kinda grade C.

i suspect that, assuming most of the actors are children, costume choices are made for efficiency when changing them into and out of costume to not go over child actor labor laws, which is why so many of the costumes are simplified. there are obvious remedies to their costuming budget that can otherwise only be chalked up to a terrible costume document. just wack
frankie couldve gotten plaid leggings. tacky? yes. but it wouldve lended more. cleo couldve gotten a yard of gold ribbon for $2 on amazon and started draping as a finishing touch. someone on set couldve thrifted some demonia shakers for clawdeen. lagoona is…entirely off. just a complete miss. its in the details :(

Absolutely heartbroken at what they dud to my girl Draculaura :( what always drew me in about her was her gothic style, she doesn't look *right* in this movie anymore, I think the outfit is kinda cute, yeah, but not for Draculaura, shorten her skirt and/or puff it out, also it makes no sense for them to make her a sorceress, she's Dracula's daughter! Dude! Don't tell me you're suddenly breaking the rules to your own universe!
About the rest… why would they give Clawdeen glasses, seriously, why, also I think a leather jacket would have done much nicer, otherwise I'm pretty ok with the outfit. Lagoona does not look like Lagoona, I don't understand why they made her pink stick out so much, the pink should be used as complementary, or retcon her as a unicorn's daughter, just… why :(
Frankie is… well, got the same problem as Draculaura, honestly they should have just gone for ripped up fishnets or something, leggings just aren't really it for her, or used knee-high stockings? Dunno, but I don't think leggings was the right option. Her skirt looks like one of those skirts you see profesional people like receptionists or flight attendants wear, by the way, it's a cute outfit but not for Frankie.
Kleo honestly is just a disappointment, her color is gold, yellow, brown, not blue. The boys looks like they were shoved into some sort of stereotype like jock n stuff, very weird, they should have gone for a slick-back hairstyle for the fire guy by the way, his hair makes it look like someone set his hair on fire, not that he is the fire.
Conclusion: They just don't feel like Monster High characters, the team probably tried, but not hard enough. The brand was literally built on fashion, it's pretty disappointing to see the decline of something that marked your childhood, you know?

Totally agree on the bad styling with the outfits. Deuce especially reminds me of shy/awkward kids that either don't want to draw attention or don't know how to dress themselves yet, which is the opposite of what MH is.
For the weird sorceress thing I think they were trying to play into the witch/dark academia trend and shoehorned it onto Draculaura, despite it being irrelevant to her character. Same with Lagoona and the pastel mermaid trend, which I agree could've worked, been awesome even, if her outfit wasn't so dorky.

I think the reason lagoona isn't painted to match the original version is because it might wash off when she goes in the water so they decided to skip it all together? But yeah I gotta agree they went too idk 2014-ish casual and I feel like they could have made the outfits more 'modest' without taking away the bite that the originals had :/ or at LEAST stay more on topic with the specific style the character had

When you show cleo and say "This is criminal" i laughed soo hard. Everyone is looking ROUGH. hopefully they change some stuff before it comes out. Also COMPLETELY unrelated whenever i watch your videos, my brain is like, she looks like a young Natale Portman! super pretty :)
May I add a few things into the conversation about the costuming (based on additional news about the movie):
- Actors, who paly background chaaracters, are dressed on par with the main cast;
- Despite a small budget, they gave Draculaura's dad a classy vampire attire (with a cape of three layers);
- In one of the musical numbers Lagoona's dress lenght is far above the knees (when compared to the skirts of other characters)/ Note that Lagoona dances in it too;
- Clawdeen (so far) has three looks, which consist of the same type of pieces (right down to the details on some of them): a jacket, a slim skirt and a top with print on it;
- Draculaura's neck accessory seems to be made out of paper-type material (from what I can tell);
- Clawdeen's crescent top might be a real Marine Serre piece aka a designer item;
- Abbey's costumes are very bright (and she will most likely be a secondary character/backgroubder).
The more I look at the costumes, the more I question what was going on in the costuming department.

the first this i said when i saw the outfits was "it looks like a walmart version". like honestly, it was supposed to reflect the character's personality, but also give of overachiever, but from a second-hand store vibe (hiding from people etc), and it comes of like... like what i thought a "good look and style" was in 2nd grade of primary school, but because of the age-inappropriate casting it looks worse and like they are trying their little siblings' clothes, imo
but like you said, it looks like they tried and that's more than i get to say about SO MANY productions lately, so i have hope for the movie itself :)
i think that my comment comes off really negative, and that wasn't my intention at all. the budget that they got probably screwed them over a BUNCH, that's still nickelodeon and cable tv now is pretty much replaced by streaming services, so they get the bare minimum, even if something is someone's passion project, but still, it looks like someone sat down and tried to do the original justice, just the cards that they were given were ...not enough? i think is the best expression i can come up with right now
but like i said, i still have hope (especially for the script)!

I saw the trailer yesterday and I have so many problems that I do not even know where to start.
It looks like they copied the fashion disaster that is Winx saga and tried to make a 'darker' version and it just doesn't work.
I'll start with Draculaura because she's probably the only one who looks fine to me - the hair is reasonable, the skin color is reasonable to the original character and doesn't really deviate from it and the outfit in a cute but creepy vibe that is her style.
We will continue with Clawdine because with her I probably have the least problems - the ears. These ears are not wolf ears in any way, too pointed, too straight and thay placed them too forward on her head!
The glasses bother me some, but what bothers me the most is the fact that they made her nerdy in the most stereotypical way possible! - glasses, loves school, not good at social relationships.
What even.
Her skirt is also too short as she sits in the last section of the trailer and her clothes in general are just ... mahh.

Lagoona does not look like Lagoona, skin color is wrong, hair color is wrong and has nothing to do with the original Lagoona, she does not even look like a sea creature! She looks like a unicorn! Like someone generic from Tiktok! And why is she not nice and they connected her to Cleo when in the series she is one of Frankie's first girlfriends and she's an insanely cute monster ??
I also have serious problems with Heath and Deuce and Ghoulia and Abbye but you can concentrate them all on-
Clothes that are too simple or that do not fit the characters at all (they put an ice monster. In a fur coat. Which hides all of her. She has elements of fur in the og design in the series but this is a wild exaggeration), behaviors that do not fit the characters, wrong skin colors (Heath is yellow! Not pumpkin orange!) And visible contempt for the characters, their designs and what they represent to people.
Deuce suffered a lot because it turns out that now he too is a stereotypical nerd who starts something with Clasdine for some reason??? And his glasses are regular with clear lenses and not sunglasses??? How does it work with the fact that he's fucking Gorgon and whoever looks at his eyes becomes a statue??? And his hair is no longer snakes???
He also looks like someone from Tiktok
And Heath and Frankie represent a big problem I have with the whole production- they didn't seem to have any ideas for monsters so they decided to paint people in body paint and say it's enough to be a monster and it looks awful

I feel like Frankie's design is maybe based more on the recent iteration of Monster High (the era they softly rebooted the dolls and had those 2 movies where they completely rewrote the origin of monster High school and stuff). I only think so because in the Electrified movie and so her skin is more blue coloured and she does wear a outfit more similar to this than the original one from where she first debuted. And like the whole reboot was to make Monster High less edgy and more appealing to younger kids, so that's why they look more conservative.

I personally love all of them, maybe except for the boys, I don’t know I just focus on the gworls 💅🏻 so I don’t really mind them, but all the hate the actors have been getting is so undeserved and so triggering that people attack them instead of the director and people in ACTUAL charge of the costumes and make up. But in conclusion the actors don’t deserve the hate, and I personally like the outfits, and people need to understand that this is a reboot btw, so the point is basically… Just start everything all over again!

The costume designer, they should go to a thrift store or something, you could literally find a similar clothing that the cartoon character wore in there plus it’s cheap. And I think they should invite a cosplayer if they want to create a live actions like this.

It started with Winx like seriously the girls on the show were always wearing amazing outfits and in " Fate" they look like they bought everything from the middle aged woman section. Monster High outfits were amazing because of toys, of course. The show had the fantastical aspect to it while the clothes brought aspects of every character personality as well as be mundane and awesome
A design detail i would have added onto lagoona is color changing skin. That would be epic. Something cool and new
Ex: if she is in the water she would have pink skin, and out of water she is blue,, it would work kinda like luca logic, whenever wet she has pink skin where she got wet at. And blue where it's dry.

Now for the outfits, Clawdeen reminded me of her collector doll with the exact same fur coat, but the rest... I don't get it. And Cleo's blue was clearly a turquoise one (gemstone turquoise) not cobalt... She makes a good Steven Universe Lapis impression though. I think a lot of the clothings just lack patterns, add more plaid to Frankie, some printed lace to Draculora, they did it with Clawdeen so why not the others?
They took inspo from her Boo York outfit which is cobalt and a dark/bronzy gold. Don't know why they decided to use that movie when every one else is based on the show though.

The most defining thing about the series is the extreme fashion and how every character is different in their expression of style. And that's the one thing they fuck up. It looks like cheap Ali express cosplays tbh. Or a Walmart closet cosplay. I get it if they had a small budget, but seriously. They really could have done better at least getting outfits that reflect the characters personality.
