    I'm beginning to feel legitimately surprised Valve haven't brought you on as an advisor yet, perhaps a joint position as Q&A/advisory game designer - besides, the platform you provide could be invaluable for them.
    As a manager myself, I can tell your eye for details combined with an impressive patience, restraint and your general curiosity would make you a great addition to any game project of your interest.

      He's kinda pointing out the reason why 3kliks hasn't been hired - They don't hire managers. Valve is a "free-form, free-range" workspace meaning that devs can choose to work on whatever they want, at whatever time they want. No one manages them.

    I think that leaving off the first stair is an intentional design choice. It makes it actually feel like you're stepping onto stairs instead of going up a ramp. I think that it's a good thing. But then, I would also prefer it if they didn't do clipping on the stairs at all.

  • @BebxOfficial
    @BebxOfficial 7 років тому +112

    I prefer the first stairs unclipped, it just feels more "stairish"
    Like, you are walking up stairs, because of the first bump, and it keeps the feeling of it.
    Also, you forgot to mention unclipped stairs effect on grenades.

    • @playzor911
      @playzor911 7 років тому +8

    I sometimes have the impression that either the team behind csgo is just too small or a little bit chaotic, i mean at one hand they do fix some bugs and minor stuff with every update but somehow
    always leave out on the most important stuff that the community wants for years. On the other hand they support professional gaming with tournaments and stickers. But every new update seems
    to focus more on visual stuff like "NEW CASES" or "CHECK OUT THE NEW SOUND UPDATE" ... like it doesnt make sense to me.

    • @The_Blog
      @The_Blog 7 років тому +1

      Especially with stuff like these stair clips. It really doesn't take long to go over them and smooth them out. If I had to guess it's 1-2 days for all maps by a single guy. So not really a whole lot of time investment.

    • @deluxem
      @deluxem 7 років тому

    If you remember, in HL2 there were these coastal maps with sloped road curves. You can either decompile one of those or open them from the leaked beta to check out how these were done and apply the same principle to clip brushes on spiral staircases.

    • @davidcarvalho1070

      Well, the consecutive bumps aren't like real life either... also, this technique is annoying when you are waiting for someone to climb the stairs, because his head will suddenly appear on the edge, instead of a smooth movement :S And since your gun is placed right in front of your eyes, this gives a huge advantage :b

    • @func_random
      @func_random 8 місяців тому

      Try searching for a third party tool called twister, it allows to generate curved displacement ramps that can be used to clip spiral staircases, however tool clip textures don't work on displacements, instead you need a fully transparent custom material with $alphatest 1, said material will also be invisible in hammer so that's a bit annoying.

    +3kliksphillip I'm pretty sure they skip the first step on purpose for possibly the reasons you said in some situations, but mainly, it probably makes stairs more realistic, and that's why I follow that example in my maps. when walking up the stairs in your house, do you glide like a swan? If so, I kind of want to see that! well of course no one jolts like that, but no one floats like an escalator either. I think it's a realistic compromise if you ask me.

    • @MrNin10dope
      @MrNin10dope 7 років тому +6

      Of course, but I'm not saying the ramps are bad, I'm saying they're unrealistic and I appreciate the missed step. I don't think anyone missed a headshot because they were fumbling around stairs, because you should not be shooting from the bottom of staircases anyway

    • @bg8580
      @bg8580 7 років тому +3

    Hé 3kliksphillip I have had a problem with Windows 10 and a strange 30/60 fps lock in games with the latest anniversary update. I have a fix for it and I think that onthers have experienced it to. Look at one of my latest and read the description. In the first place I had a 30fps lock and when I turned the Game DVR off and back onn it had a strange 60fps lock on it, very wierd. And there was a noticeble inputlagg on it. This problem is a struggle for many pc gamers and especially compettetive gamers. I have only seen this problem on 2 CS:GO forums.

    As someone who does a lot of mapping, I think I understand how the first step issue occurs. When adding clipping to a stair, it's not unheard of that the clip only covers the length of the stair, as it's thought of only as a collection of brushes, where it's quite easy to overlook the space in front.

    I was just thinking about how much of a huge fan I am of you, how youve inspired me and affected my life in many ways, how I wrote a speech about you for 9th grade English, how I'd love to meet you, 3kliksphillip, my hero, in person and become best bros one day...
    And then I see this video and I discover Phillip-senpai has downloaded and used a pirated version of Counter-Strike: Source.
    I have never been more disappointed in anyone in my entire life. My dreams are crushed and my whole life is a lie. I can't believe this UA-camr I look up to and admire would commit such a horrible, disgusting, and irredeemable crime. I believed in you and you've let your biggest fan down. Shame on you, Phillip Dyer. Shame on you.

      Also, he already has the official copy of the game, he just needed a specific version for testing purposes. What he did is good, it helps the community out, by helping us understand the issues with stairs in CS, and helps the devs fix the problems in their games, and learn from their previous mistakes.

    the stairs on dust2 in dark were left unclipped to add dynamic game play when peeking someone who was upper tunnels. So you can stand on some stairs without being shot if ducking.

    Philip, this will probably never been seen by you or anyone, but thank you for this video, one day in august 2016 this video showed up in my recommended feed, i had never heard of counter strike before and this was the video that introduced me to it and it is my favorite game now, over 700 hours and more than a year later. I have made a whole new friend group because of this game and built my own computer, and my life has improved greatly. Thank you! I cannot put into words how much i thank you.

    I think the first bump is there to let you know you're on the stairs, like a tiny little bump that indicates where exactly you are.

  • @wesmatron
    @wesmatron 7 років тому +1

    IMO there should be a judder when you go up the stairs to prevent rushing up them whilst having a steady aim. I really liked the idea of falling when going down stairs too quickly. It adds another interesting tactical element to the proceedings.

    For spiral staircases, the third party tool Twister v5 can generate curved displacement ramps, meaning no more need to cut hundreds of brushes.
    But tool clip materials do not work on displacements, instead a fully transparent custom material is needed which will also be invisible in the Hammer editor, think thats a fair tradeoff.

    I thought the reason for missing clips on the dust2 stairs was that it would be too steep, making the players surf on parts of the staircase.
    The HORRIBLE train stairs clipping is a real pain though and I HATE every clipping that misses the first step.
    Thanks for this video, this is legimately a topic I very much care about.

    Spiral stair clipping can be smoothed out even further by dividing the clip brushes into several concentric rings, adding more vertices.

    the reason that those stairs are not clipped in tunnels in the middle of the staircase is because to give whoever is standing there a disadvantage when peaking towards upper tunnels because very little of them will be exposed so the trade-off is that your aim may be messed up because you were on stairs as opposed to standing in upper.
