Not really perfectly researched. Pigeons on old train could let you move to an area above A site, so you could see and kill your enemies from there. It actually affected gameplay for a solid few days. See this watch?v=rSL1mrcM8JM
Theo Higgins wow I've been playing for 2 years?! That's sad because I didn't play much competitive until like 2 months ago, I just pissed around with friends and played community servers so I'm not even good at the game haha. I remember being sad because I bought the Vanguard coin a day before the operation ended not knowing what it was and I need 1 more steam achievement for CSGO which happens to be "Win 250 Pistol Rounds in Competitive Matches" so rip haha large part of my childhood tho
these videos have become so high quality now i can only image how long it takes you to get all this footage. thank you for all the grate work you do for the community.
train has always been my favorite map since the early daysand im so glad that you took the time and got an impressive amount of information. love these videos.
i think train is totally underrated. really fun map with a huge variety in range. lots of super-close range spots, but also some of the longest range shots in the game, on the same map.
I might a found an unfisnished area on train. Go to Ivy and you'll there is a little office. Noclip in it and you'll see there is sound effects, Tv that can be destoyed and more! Maybe this was suppose to do like Toxic on the new nuke?
holy shit 3kliks such an amazing series this has been ! such a deep insight in the development of all the maps is amazing to see as someone who would have loved to see the development of cs in the early days
These videos are really cool, I only came into CS:GO in the last couple years so I missed a lot of the history the game has. Really awesome to be able to see all the changes that have been made over the years. Very well done!
2:13 "He wanted Train to be more about CQC with many chokepoints and with less emphasis on sniper action." Interesting how this intention barely translated into the actual gameplay since IMO Train is one of the maps with MORE long distance fights and a lot of freedom for snipers. Fallen dancing up and down the ladders with the awp is one the most memorable highlights on the map for me
Backalley is for me the one map that reminds me the most of playing CS during the original betas (1999-2000). It's got that oldschool atmosphere and charm.
Hi phil, im unsure if you will read this, but rewatching this video now made me think: would it be possible to make Chris's idea a reality nowadays in the new Source 2 engine? A map based on a moving high speed train. I believe there already are some prototypes for moving bomb spots in the workshop for CSGO now, shouldn't it be easier in cs2?
stuff like this makes me sad that I missed out on CS source and 1.6, started playing csgo last year and I love it, but the classic counter strikes look so fun I wish I was in the PC scene back then
12:04 The grabber on site A wasn't moved so it was out of the way, it was moved so it was above the bomb train, which was also moved. The ground around the bomb train is cracked and the train itself is badly damaged because the grabber dropped it, which is why it makes sense for the grabber to be above the bomb train.
Also there is an easter egg if you zoom in with scoped weapon under the ladder at popdog position behind the wall there is a crate that have popdog logo on it
Speaking of Barking Dog Studios, is anyone remembers Global Operations? A Counter-Strike's rival game back in the day, also made by them, and even features Mair and MacTaggart in the game as bot. Really miss that old game.
I miss old Train. Old, old Train that is--4, 5, 6 train in outer site, crawling around under train cars, getting killed from on top of Popdog and heaven as soon as you step into outer site from T spawn...
The only CS game I played was Source back when I bought Gmod in 2013. I played CSS only a few times, I didn't really like it because I had only gotten it for the textures on Gmod. Back in 2013, my brother was playing CS:GO, telling me it was a cool game but hard. I ended up buying it not too long after because I didn't think a multiplayer FPS game could be that hard, that's when I started playing competitive, finding out that "Bullets don't stay in my crosshair!". I've had fun with this game over the years and am more intrigued by the history of the game now because of your videos. Also Philip, if you read this, I'm glad to made the gamemode "Smash" I enjoy it on Gmod. It's a very fun and relaxing game.
Your story is really similar to mine, except that I bought it in 2014 (for Gmod aswell). I played it for like 50 hours in 6 months or so. Then my friend told me (April 2015), that there was this game called CS:GO. I hadn't spoken much to him before, but the game made us good friends and I'm still enjoying it now, although I don't really have enough time to play it properly.
Really awesome video man! It extremely informative and was really interesting to see the story of de_train! Also fun to see all the early bugs and tiny glitches such as the pigeon :P
Nice to see you getting in contact with the original Map maker. Should just do a video on bugs caused by the source engine itself as pointed out with ladders and other weird occurrences.
I always liked the 1.6 version of Train the best, as it wasn't too CT-sided (as in Source and early CS:GO) and it felt way more open and simple compared to the one we have today! I miss the times when you could actually hide under the trains, and even plant the bomb in cheeky spots ;)
It's sad that epic maps like Nuke, Train, Inferno are not being played that often in MM and Casual. Instead of that people play d2 over and over again - so boring. Good video Phil , as always.
I really liked the idea of getting someone who developed it to help with the video, maybe rework your older videos? for example when the dust2 remake comes out
Such a goodl map nowadays, which is unfortunately not very popular among lower level Matchmaking players. The map is very CT sided which can lead to Old-Nuke-ish games.
train was always a map which would work better with teams which trained nuke and actually are a team, because you have more positions where you fully depend on your m8 doing the right job, on other maps you always have some time to comprehend, on train you are dead as fast as your teammate who did not get his job done right. I still like to play it in matchmaking but is much harder and more frustrating with randoms than other maps are, therefore I kinda understand its lack of popularity
Yeah, there used to be a platform opposite the current sniper nest on A site, which you could climb up to using a ladder. It was the highest spot in the map, and pretty unbalanced/OP, since AWPing from there was very powerful - you could only be killed by a grenade, someone climbing up the ladder or on top of the carriages and shooting you (easy to defend against), or going too close to the edge and getting shot from below.
I see. But was it worth? I imagine you could watch connector and Popdog from there (and of course the site itself), but you'd be very vulnerable to ivy and had no line of sight to the main entrance from T spawn..
You are and always will be the superior when it comes to these types of videos, the amount of care, and time you put into your videos is super admirable, thanks for this!

Legorz well there's the one behind a window, yeah. Or is it the same? I'm a little confused
It's the same one, there was another ladder on the other side which could've been used as a sniper nest too I guess but it's gone now
Yeah, there used to be a platform opposite the current sniper nest on A site, which you could climb up to using a ladder.
