One of the bigger gimmicks in the 2nd gen was baby forms. So alot of the pokemon you saw like the small ponyta, meowth etc, are probably baby pokemon version.
Yeah, I'll admit a few of them looked really cool (I think the Mushroom was a baby Paras/Parasect)

Yeah that final Pokemon is an early Leafeon according to their document, since Eevee evolves into that with a leaf stone in that early demo.

MegaRezfan I actually like beta Raikou's design. But I like the Raikou we have today. Gamefreak should seriously bring some of these unused pokemon back for Gen 8 now that this is leaked!

The old Remoraid and Octillery designs look awesome.
This explains why Gen 2 only had like 100 (new) Pokémon. It all makes sense now.
On the spreadsheet, there is a file labeled Pokemon that shows all of the sprites individually, compares them to the sprites we got (if they existed), names, types, and how evolutions worked. One of the more interesting things it mentions that Umbreon was to be a POISON type and would have evolved with a Poison Stone (which would have also made Gloom & Weepinbell evolve into their new evolutions), with Espeon evolving with a Heart Stone.
If you look on the Google Doc you can read info about them. Some of them are actually pre evolutions and evolutions to Pokémon who never got any
if they give evolutions for kanto mons in lets go pikachu/eevee, jynx and mr. mime definitely need to be one of them. i heard jynx was supposed to have a third evolution along with magmar and electabuzz in gen 4 (i don't know about mr. mime) but apparently the blackface controversy held game freak back from implementing it. which is a shame cuz those two are over-the-top rediculous lol

Panda boy is a Jiangshi, which is a Chinese vampire. So probably ghost type.

There was a Murkrow with a witches hat in the anime. Also, my fav was def the thunder tiger. We need those two mons. Also I'm sad we never got that baby meowth or baby growlithe. Same with the dark moon cats.

I think they scrapped the "thunder tiger" because of Raikou. It also looked more like a rodent to me and I don't think we need that many electric rodents.
if u watch patterrz vid to this, theres actually a list where u can see what kind of pokemon this was meant to be... its easier to understand than just looking at them. most of the designs were meant to be baby forms and not early designs they changed in the end.

You got it wrong, ri-fui (the leafeon looking one) is intended to be leafeon (evolves from eevee with a leaf stone), but takes the pokedex number of what is currently celebi

Baby Pokémon were originally going to be a much bigger thing. The little Ponyta, Meowth, Doduo, and Vulpix were likely just scrapped baby Pokémon.

This was fun to look at and think about. Thanks for sharing this! Here are some of my thoughts:
The scrapped Fire starter line look feline in nature.
I think that the fox Pokemon shown next to Ampharos might have been a pre-evolution for Vulpix.
I'm surprised that Tangela could've not only have received a pre-evolution, but also have been able to evolve into a scrapped version of Tangrowth as early as Gen 2.
That Flying-type Pokemon would've been neat to have in an official game.
The Pokemon Qwilfish could have evolved into looks like a combination of Whiscash and Stunfisk with spikes added.
I would've been alright with a Water/Steel shark or fish Pokemon. I know that I've seen fakemon drawn like that. The Pokemon next to it looks like an early version of Huntail.
The odd slime Pokemon next to Skarmory looks like an early version of Goomy.
I love the early back sprite for Girafarig. It would be awesome if Girafarig either evolved into a Pokemon based off of that scrapped design, or if we got a regional variant resembling it.
I would have loved to have had the shell normally attached to Slowbro & Slowking detach and to retain its design as its own Pokemon. This could've been a branching evolution for Shellder. They could've done to Shellder and Slowpoke something a bit more complicated than Remoraid and Mantyke.
A Fighting-type bear cub and bear Pokemon, not counting Pancham & Pangoro(especially since they're pandas), would've been neat. I also prefer the version of Hitmontop that we actually have over the beta version.
I agree. The Pokemon between early Jumpluff and early Smoochum could've been a beta version of Mime Jr., which means that Mr. Mime could've had its pre-evolution in Gen 2 instead of Gen 4.
A branching evolution for Weepinbell or Bellsprout would've been neat.
I would have loved to catch a Fire-type circus seal! That's such a neat concept that I would've never thought of!
The Electric tiger squeakers after beta Delibird would have been fun!

It also looks like Pinsir might have received an evolution. Not only did they probably scrap it, but this could've inspired Heracross.
The two Pokemon after Houndoom look interesting.
I'm not sure how I feel about beta Lickilicky. The version of Lickilicky that we were given might look better that it.
I like the version of Leafeon that we received in Gen 4 over the beta edition from the Gold demo.
The weird "AAAAHhh" Pokemon was supposed to be Ditto's evolution. :u
Just to let you know, Happa was Chikorita's beta name, and it never had a full body sprite in the demo; so I'm not sure why it does in the sprite sheet. Also, the beta-only species Honoguma (unassigned #) and Kurusu (#212) were used as placeholder starter Pokemon for the demo.

I'm sure I've seen the basic fire and water type starters somewhere before, I'm guessing the two after houndour and houndoom are early versions of snover and abomasnow. Otter/Weasel thing before Ho-oh makes me think of mienfoo. Puppy between hitmontop and hoppip seems like a baby growlithe, seems like there were babies of ponyta and vulpix too. Qwilfish evo appears to be electric type and was probably replaced by chinchou and lanturn, which aren't seen here but may also have replaced the eel. And if you take one of the heads of the two-headed ghost shown before girafarig, you almost have wobbuffet's tail. Tigers = early Shinx and Luxray, swan is probably Farfetch's evo, panda might be an early attempt at munchlax.
That little Meowth one was TOTALLY going to be a baby version of Meowth...It's so cuuute! I'm sad...That would have been adorable. And I'm betting the same is true for the others, like the Paras-looking one, and the Ponyta. There were going to be a LOOOOT more baby-pokes.
@GameboyLuke looking through the document myself it looks like that pokemon you thought might have been a mythical pokemon between suicune and ho-oh isnt mythical its sneasel. Also what you thought might be celebi is actually an early Leafeon design. If you read through the pokemon list tells you all you able the changes as well.
If you remember in the anime, when the burned tower burned down there were three dogs inside of the tower that became Entei, Raiku, and Suicune?(sorry for my spelling, I don't have their names right in front of me) Well, the early sprites look similar to the dogs that perished in that fire so maybe the old sprites were meant to look like the dogs or the anime used those old sprites to make everyone think that the dogs in the fire were new Pokemon, because it only showed their shadow in the fire and the shadows look similar to the old sprites. So perhaps, the old sprites were the dogs like perished in the fire and the new sprites were what they became after the fire? Maybe I'm looking too much into this but 😂 it's just a theory that popped up once I saw the old sprites. Also, if you play the game (which I'd love to see), maybe choose the fire starter? It's such a cute design, though I'm glad they chose to use Cyndaquil instead

I'd like to see a playthrough, it'd be nice to see what kind of things they potentially wanted for the game but scrapped in favour of others.

I see a couple of of what would be gen 4 mons, or re-purposed designs like the celebi becoming leafeon, or those three fish in row three being used in gen three and turned into carvanha, sharpedo, and huntail.
Heck you could say the water starter could have been the base of what would become popplio.
The Paras-like one seems like a middle evolution for the line. like how the first evolution has small mushrooms on it and then theoretically the second stage is it being nearly consumed by the fungi, and then the final stage is the fungi fully taking it over.
Apparently Misty was supposed to have been an Elite 4 member.
I mean, why not? But then I start to wonder who would’ve taken over Cerulean gym?
If girafarig got that design it should also get the ability stance change so we wouldn’t have to look at the back sprite constantly.

Remeroid looks like a gun, and Octillery was meant to look like Artillery... (That explains his name I bit but no s**t) They probably scrapped the design because it had to much to do with Wars, Guns, and Extreme Violence...

But what happened to the old Chikorita design? I've seen it before, on videos of weird past pokemon. It looked like a slime, lacking hind legs and with a couple horns. I personally adored it.

I cant believe they had an anchor shark and didn't use it! People had made that exact same design around gen 4 or 5's release its the EXACT SAME design its crazy! I hope they plan to bring some of these to gen 8 as new mons.

you're probably right, I still think it should of been its own thing. probably what happened was sharpedo was made and they never looked back. What could of been awesome was sharpedo got the chain added when it mega'd instead of what we got.
That Beta Girafarig’s Back Sprite, if it was ever put into the game, would have ended Pokemon for me forever, like that Beta Girafarig is, to me, a Normal Girafarig that probably got killed by Team Rocket and was resurrected by Giratina but was cursed with an Evil, Revenge-Seeking Form of itself to replace its back side that would try to get revenge on its killer

Pretty much everything you were saying was wrong XD Like, that thing you thought was beta Misdreavus is actually the prevo to Girafarig, Umbreon was a poison type, the pimp swan is a Farfetch'd evo, pretty much every tiny version of an existing pokemon was a baby mon, the last mon in the list is an early Leafeon, and the screaming blob is an evolution of Ditto using a Metal Coat.
Not being nitpicky, I just wanted to see your reactions to ALL the new information x-x I'm super down for a playthrough though
