  • We're going to do more accuracy testing on traditional lube vs powder coat cast bullets. And the recent bullets from Loads of Bacon are going to provide us more data on this project. So first, let's do some traditional sizing lubricating with RCBS...

    Another excellent tutorial, you will find it much easier to fit the die and gland nut into the press if you use a hot air gun to pre warm it, also less chance of cross threading the nut. Happy New Year to you ! Chris B.

      That’s what I do especially when using stiff lubes. You can get a hot air gun at a hobby store that sells model airplane supplies.

    Hey Mr fortune cookie! This is why I love our casting, powder coating, reloading community. Loads of bacon sent all my favorite channels some lead fun to play with. Can't wait for the other videos. Happy New Year!!!

      SP69 - That LoB is really generous in doing this - and I intend to really make his gift a gift to all - by getting more good data (40 5 shot groups) to establish accuracy and consistency comparison of PC and traditionally lubed cast bullets. Happy 2018 to ya..!! FC Steve

    Happy New Year FC to you and all the family, thanks for all your hard work making great videos. Just recently purchased some powders from Eastwood on your recommendation and the bullets turned out great.

      R7sixtwo - Thanks for your HNY and for your gracious comments... Congrats on Eastwood PC - I've gone back to hand tumbling the PC in plastic jugs with the Eastwood powders - no failures yet and good results...no need to vibe tumble with Eastwood powders - worth the extra cost for the reliability and versatility (although Harbor Freight Red is still a good powder). I'll still vibe tumble on those occasions when hand tumbling won't get the job done. Good shootin' to ya, FC Steve

    Adjusting the stop is so fast and easy I see no reason why wouldn't anyone take advantage. I just got my press a week ago and it took me a while to figure out how to make that adjustment, before that I was ready to modify top punch and it turned out to be so simple.

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  6 років тому

      Dima Prok - Thanks for your comments - the stop is there to be used for sure. If you check out some of my videos on the use of the machine, I calculate that I can do 720 bullets an hour doing one bullet every 5 seconds and I use feel and handle position to determine depth of the stroke...That works fine for me so I don't bother with the stop...but the stop is there to be used for anyone who wants to use it - Why not? I think I left the machine set for a 45 SWC ACP bullet and just leave it there. I have so many different cast bullets, the feel and handle position work well for me...if I used the stop, might be happier. Happy 2018 to ya..!! FC Steve

    RCBS makes some of my favorite luber sizers. I also have an ancient Lyman sizer. Great video. I have a lube question for you. What’s the velocity limit of a lee 30-30 150 grain bullet sized to .309 and tumble lubed with 50-50 allox bees wax? I want to load them to about 1700 fps without gas check from a marlin model 36A flat bolt with the old style rifling.

    Happy new year from Maryland. Thanks for the "Casting 101" classes. I enjoy all your videos. Question. I pure lead ingots. What is the formula to obtain bhn 15 with pure lead?

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  6 років тому

      Alejandro Mendoze - That's a tough question - You can get to BHN 15 in many ways...Check out the Lead Hardness Calculator from Cast Boolits - it's a free download and you can plug in any alloy you have (for example RotoMetals SuperHard alloy 70% lead 30% antimony; or Linotype 84% lead 12% antimony 4% tin) start with a number of pounds of your pure lead, then enter a number of pounds of one and it automatically tells you how much of the other to add to get your BHN 15. Makes it easy as grease off a log... However, you should keep some of that pure lead on hand for making shotgun slugs or black powder shooting. Happy 2018 to ya..!! FC Steve

      @FortuneCookie45LC  6 років тому

      anselb2000 Thanks for your comment.... The nut did look a little off, but it is secure. The die inside is not crooked though as the bullets size square, the machine works well so I'm not looking for complaints. That wrench in the beginning of the video was the one that came with my Lyman 450 sizer lubricator - long since defunct. Happy 2018 to ya..!! FC Steve

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  6 років тому

      Abe Lincoln - For target shooting or cowboy action, nothing needs to be added at all. Just use range scrap straight up. And if shooting magnums, add a pound of linotype to two pounds of range scrap, we're good to go... Good shootin' to ya, FC

  • @michaeltomsa-musatin

    Question: If you get lube on the base of the bullet and end up loading it that way, what affect does that lube have on powder performance in that bullet??

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  6 років тому

      Abdullah Mikail - Neat question (pun? - you bet). :) ;) ;) Powder getting stuck onto bullet lube affects the ignition...some grains may not burn at all, plus lots of smoke generated. Big mess also. In hot weather, the lube will melt and gum up the powder charge - ammo is toast - primer may not even fire. In the past, extra lubrication waxy wads were cut into the case mouth and the bullet seated - that was the throes of the black powder days. For smokeless, we can use fillers, but the best policy on bullet bases is clean bullet bases. Happy 2018 to ya..!! FC Steve

    Do you ever adjust the depth stop? Or always go by eye?

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  6 років тому +1

      Dominic Minischetti - If by eye, that would be too tedious. Once one gets into these types of lubrisizers, a feel of the handle and handle position tells you that you are there...much faster than using the eye. And that actually works very consistently so that using the stops is just not necessary. I recall that when I first got the unit, I adjusted the stops, but that got tiring in a hurry...Happy 2018 to ya..!! FC Steve

    I am learning a lot from your videos. Question though, I bought my cast bullets recently and unlike yours about a third of mine have about half of the lube missing from each of the lube grooves. Is it okay to load these or should I apply additional lube, if so what is the best way? I do not have a lubAMatic sizer though I wish I did. Happy New Year

    Not a good idea using a metal object to push the bullet die in or out of the sizer. I use a small wood block that can’t cause any damage to the die or sizer.
