    I have been reloading for 10yrs and now starting to think about casting bullets now. you are the first person to show the sizing and lube processes. I really appreciate showing sizing,lubing powder coated bullets Thanks

    Thank you for your knowledge. My 17 year old son just traded on a Winchester 1907 in .351 and we are going to learn together how to make our own bullets. I have taught him the basics of traditional reloading but making our own out of cast is a great learning experience for both of us and your videos will guide us through. Thank you so much!!!

    That's a great looking bullet Mr. FC. At 300 grains and that big meplat, it's sure to hit with authority no matter what case you load it in, and no matter how you decide to lubricate it.
    Thank you for everything you do, and for the shout out. "Mr. Bacon's" been watching and learning in the Hot Lead Zone for several years, and I'm glad I'll continue to be able to do so even as UA-cam turns us away. It's exciting watching the community showing up and growing at The Reloaders Network.

    I have that same RCBS Luber-sizer, One technique I used was to pressurize the lube reservoir only when the bullet is all the way down in the die, then I relieve the pressure and pop out the bullet. (Push it down in, apply pressure, the relieve the pressure, then pop the bullet out with the upstroke of the handle). I found that grease build up on the bottom of the bullet goes away. also, you can adjust the bullet depth in the die so the injection port for the grease groove is aligned, that way you only get grease in the grove when the reservoir is pressurized and the bullet is bottomed out. Not on the base if you decide to skip using a gas check.. although you may have to wipe off a few. Just a hack that I used Cookie. Dave.

    Can the gap in the lube in the grease groove create accuracy issues? Will the gas check bring the weight back up to 300 grains anyway? Good looking bullets you have there.

  • @milboltnut
    @milboltnut 3 місяці тому

    you don't need gas checks if you fit the boolit to the cylinder throats and groove diameter. And if the alloy is at least 9 BHN, also here's been softer alloy with slower and less pressure powders that was not effected by gas cutting without gas checks.

    Are the sizing dies and punches interchangeable among the brands of presses, kind of like the reloading dies are all 7/8" x 14 ? ? I just stumbled on a used Lyman 450 sizing press.

    What difference would lube and gas check make on a powder coated bullet for velocity and barrel fouling?

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  6 років тому +1

      Ghost Shadow - The main reason I put GCs on bullets that have the GC designs is for uniform bases that can add to accuracy. PC bullets don't need the GCs, otherwise. Same for the lube...sometimes the accuracy is improved...only testing will tell... Great 4th to ya..!! FC Steve

  • @ImTHATguy...
    @ImTHATguy... Місяць тому

    Well when you're lubing a bullet that's set for a gas check but not using the gas check, then you'll get that mess. When you're lubing "greaser" bullets, you don't get that messy base.

    He forgot 45 raptor!
    LOL
    But seriously, if you do not have your lead at the ideal hardness for the pressures you're shooting at, would putting a gas check on the bottom help compensate for a "too soft" bullet?

  • @danoneill2846

    I would think the P/C with lube would work well ??

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  6 років тому +1

      Dan O'Neill - I got that idea from years ago, when a reloader lubed his jacketed bullets (why would he do that??!!), and testing showed benefit. I have a couple of loads where the lube on the PC grooves shot better than without. That's good enough for me to try it on other loads. Have a great 4th, FC Steve

    Will gas checks seat properly on a bullet with a bevelled base (such as a Missouri Buffalo #1), as opposed to a "Step."??

    • @robertmckinley4825
      @robertmckinley4825 2 роки тому

      Do not worry about the beveled base. As long as the gas check is fully seated flat on the base of the bullet you should be doing okay.

    What kind of lube are you using?

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  6 років тому +1

      hellcajunR22 - It's Lyman Moly Lube - and there are traces of my own homemade lube that sometimes gets into it as a multi-mix. All works well. I also have Orange Magic for the indoor range bullets (I try to avoid indoor ranges as often as possible), and another favorite is Lyman 50-50 lube (Alox and beeswax). I bought a case of Lyman Moly Lube years ago....still going through it as my homemade lube also works well (video is up on that). Have a great day, FC Steve

    Steve, I noticed some of the grease grooves in your bullets were not completely full. I believe this can cause bullet wobble in flight because of the weight differential. When using my Lyman lubrisizer, after the first sizing cycle, I rotate the bullet 1/2 turn and size it again to ensure the lube grooves are completely full. Sure, it takes a bit longer, but as you say, we're looking for consistency.

    So, if I want a .459 diameter bullet and I buy a .459 bullet mold do I still need to buy a sizing die?

    • @robertmckinley2886
      @robertmckinley2886 3 роки тому

      You can do what you want but I think casting your bullets about .002 oversize and then follow with sizing down to the desirable size to get a perfectly round bullet is the way to go. This is a matter of personal preference though. Many shooters just cast and shoot directly from the mold if they have a mold that drops the bullets in the size they want. Temperature changes from cooling and re-heating can have an effect on bullet size that drops from the mold so resizing improves consistent accuracy in bullet size diameter and roundness. The differences are usually minute though depending on the kind of material your mold is made from and your alloy mix.

    • @stevanrose7439
      @stevanrose7439 2 роки тому

      You are correct in what you said about temperature changes. And you might get the reading from a Micrometer.
      Although lee dies say in the instructions that their bullets can be loaded and fired right from the mold.

      bososz - Very observant of you...what happened was that I put a GC onto the platform and my glove had some lube on it so it flipped the GC over and when that happens, you can't get the GC out unless you just go ahead and seat the next one...then the inverted GC comes out and you have to separate the extra one...it's a wasted GC. I just didn't bother to put that in the video. Have a great 4th, FC Steve

    Wish you could still do your vids like normal, on youtube. Too bad there isnt a alternative that everyone uses, instead of having everyone move to different options scattered all over the internet. Hard to keep up then. Only one I know of is Full30 but not sure all the youtube guys went that way.

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  6 років тому +3

      TheOutdoorsan - We look for free sites to move onto, but there are no free sites...anyone that is running a platform has costs and time commitment...The platform bills have to be paid somehow. The way I figured it, if everybody flocked over to Full30, would swamp them - there's not enough income coming in on their platform to keep it going - reason why many have not gone there, if it can't handle the flow, it's a no-go. If Full30 thrives, then more will go. And we posters incur costs as well - recently, I had to return to the range to reshoot some clips because I didn't like what I had recorded the first time around. Reshooting stuff from our home reloading bench is not as bad, but producing videos takes about three hours per video. Plus scheming and planning for future videos as we are working on others. And taking care of the viewers comments also takes additional time...like an hour and a half a day easy. Speaking for posters, we really do get positives for our efforts, and some income help is very much appreciated. YT keeps dropping though...and having to watch our steps on YT is a PIN. Have a great 4th, FC Steve

Leaving Money on any gun Forum is the worst idea since they ban you whenever they want.
