I finished the hat. I used a 4mm hook, and the lion brand tape yarn. The way in the video was too small for me so I did increases until there was 12 stitches in-between increases. Then I did 16 rows of no increases instead of 11 or however many are in the video. This made it fit my head better. I used probably 1.2 balls of the yarn, which was probably worth it since the stabilizing stitches really helped to keep the brim nice! My brim doesn’t lay fully flat tho :/. Overall I would do this pattern again but I think regular weight 4 yarn would do just fine, and I would personally get that instead because it is cheaper and has more color options and I feel it would produce the same results. Hope that helps someone !
Thanks for this comment. I really searched the comment section, because I'm having the same problem. I'm making this hat right now and I'm stuck in row 12, thinking it looks smaller than that of the video. I'm using same yarn brand and same hook size and my count is correct, so I'm wondering where I went wrong. I even paused the video and counted the rows. I'm not sure but I'm seeing 14 rows instead of 12. So I'm torn between increasing two more rows or follow the pattern and see how it goes. But thanks to this comment, I'm going to increase for 2 more rows 😊 Over all though, it's a great pattern. Thank you, Sewrella! 😊
How did you figure out the increasing for the brim please ? I also had 14 stitches between increase die the circle, then die 12rows of regular single crochet. Thank you so much if jou have the answer😉
Thanks I ripped mine out 3 times thinking I was doing something wrong only came up 5inch instead of 6.75" and I checked my tension guage all spot on, I gave up in the end as far too small even using 4.5mm hook which was then not as firm
You explain everything so well. This is my first sun hat and it was easy to do….thank you so much for sharing the video but also for the writing pattern. It really help me! I will start a second hat. thank you! 😊
I used the same yarn and it’s the best yarn for a sun hat. I bought the yarn and was very upset that the yarn has no strength. The moment I saw your video the very next day I started making hat and now I am loving this yarn,as if it’s made for sun hats. The yarn is so cool to touch and it’s velvety feeling is so soothing. Thanks again.
I have made a few hats using this pattern and I'm so in love! I also purchased the Making LEMONADE Rewind yarn and I'm currently making another hat! It is coming out so beautifully! Thanks again for all you share with us!
This is a great tutorial!!! I used Aran weight cotton with a 4mm hook, as I wanted to use what I had already, to make the very top, flat of the hat up to increase 16 (instead of increase 10). After continuing the single crotchet rows down (11) I had to start with increase & single crochet 4 and then caught up to inc sc 7, where she got to in the video, then continued following the same pattern. Great tutorial thanks so much!! I also had the video slowed down quite a bit to make it easier to follow
I made this hat and have been complimented how great the hat looks and even asked if they gave me their info if I would make one for them.....wow love love this pattern!...
Love it! In South Africa we do not always find the type of yarn used in tutorials, alas. I used plain virgin cotton in a mocha colour. Did my own pattern as I like a deeper bowl, using 4,5mm hook, 2hich works so well. Then used your pattern for the wide brim and the slip stitching...it looks so good, thanks so much for this helpful tip! Would be great tho if you could show us exactly where you stopped, before the double slip stitch edging, as my row count and that of others won't necessarily be the same as yours. My family are all going to want one now😁
That is better than any I've seen in the shops. I love it! More hats please! I struggle to buy Summer hats as my head is larger than average and the ones in the shops are way too tight.
Thank you. Beautiful sun hat and very clear directions. I love your finishing technique. Your hat looks so professional. Can't wait to get this yarn and try this out. I have made a crochet sun hat with mercerized cotton yarn DK held doubled to get a stiffer hat, and I do love the end result. Always wanting to learn and get new yarns! Keep making videos, you are excellent at it. Have a wonderful day!
My hat has doesnt have flat dome. I have a quedtion, when u increase, is it the next stitch after or do u increase in the counting the stitch? Its confusing bc my stitch count doesn't work for me. Also I'm using a craft type cotton and it keeps splitting apart, I went down a size 3:50 and im hoping I can get my gauge to work, somehow I keep having my row count adding more than where the number of the row is in the written pattern, I think I'm looking at the number of the row. I made a hat, but it came out wavy, so frogged it and started over again.
I agree that some close-ups would be SO beneficial. I'm a beginner and only a couple of minutes in, and there are several times when I've had to go back over and over again to try to see where the yarn strands and hook are in relation to each other. Then you say "if you look closely..." but I can't look as closely as I need to! I love this pattern and I'm going to persevere, but if you had gone a little slower and a lot closer up it would have been a lot easier.
I started my hat, and the tutorial is easy to follow. My hat IS a little on the wavy side, but so far it still looks good. I love this tape yarn. Looks are very deceiving! At a glance it looks like it would have a harsh, scratchy feel. Total opposite! Extremely soft and very strong. Also! This yarn did not snag, frey or any of that AT ALL!
Love this hat. Going to look for some of this yarn since this video was done 2 years ago. Hope to find the yarn. Thanks for such an awesome hat and tutorial.
Great hat ! Would be easier for beginners if it was more zoomed in, so we see exactly how to do it and the speed of crocheting could be slower=easier 🤗
I have made this hat four and because another person admired it, I am about to make a fifth. I still don't own one. I keep giving them away bc people like them so much. It is extremely easy to make. I have never accomplished the very flat brim though. Everytime the brim wants to curve down more like a bucket hat. It doesn't really matter to anyone but my mom, who was the first to request and pick out the pattern. I do love this hat.
This is another lovely pattern that you’ve chosen and I love your tutorials. I do get a little confused though watching you crochet, particularly the way you wrap the yarn around the hook with your left hand, which makes it look like you’re knitting.
Thank you for this pattern and video instructions. I recently bought this kit from lion brand. What if I want to make a larger brim? Will I need to add a wire?
I appreciate the time you spend making these videos and I enjoy learning from you, however, I would love it if you could get closer to your camera. It hurts my eyes trying to see what you're doing. I have old eye's 😉.
love this tutorial, but what other yarn can i use as i don't really want to purchase yarn when i have lots and lots of 4ply and DK yarn (hubby says i have enough to open own shop so not allowed to buy more)
Hi! I am very excited to make this hat. I think I may need to increase the brim size (I am very fair and need LOTS of protection). Would I continue the pattern of increases instead of stopping at row 37/38 or is there a better way to increase the brim size? Thank you!
Made this hat for myself and I love it! On vacation with my 6 year old niece and she wants me to make her one. Is there a pattern for this hat in a smaller version?
Wonderful video. I just found it. I’d like to make the brim a little larger. So I’d keep doing the round of single crochet then a round of increase (one more single crochet from the last increase row)? Hope that makes sense. I love the rewind yarn/tape, it’s so soft. Thanks 😊 just so you know the PDF large print link doesn’t work.
Thanks for the easy to read pattern and great video! I have one question, though. The listed dimensions say that the diameter of the dome should is 6.75". Does this mean that the circle at the end of round 12 should measure 6.75"? If so, how do you get that with a 4mm hook?
I don’t think we have this yarn here in Perth Australia, we do have some of their other yarns, would they be ok to substitute? I really like your hat design .
Wow, beautiful, I love this pattern! Thank you so much! I am working on mine now, but I am using a cotton raffia blend, and I was wondering if you could tell me the measurement of the flat circle after completing round 12? So I can make sure mine is the same size and add or take away rows accordingly. I am using a size 4mm hook as well, and mine looks about the same size as yours, but it’s hard to tell by just looking at the video. Thanks!!
So lovely, thank you for posting. I'd really like to buy the pattern, but I cannot seem to find it. The link just takes me to Etsy, but not the specific pattern. I have searched and it just doesn't come up.
Hi, I'm new to your channel. This tutorial is very clear. I didn't watch it all yet. I have one question. I want to do the same thing with a 1.5 mm crochet hook and yarn thread. Should I use the same count of stitches or should that be changed? I appreciate your assistance in this.
I finished this hat with the same hook and yarn but the both the top and the brim of my hat are very lumpy and wavy where the increases are. My brim got did get much flatter with the surface stitches but it's 100% turned into a bucket hat and not this lovely straight-horizontal brim....did this happen to anyone else? I don't know how to make it smooth or flat. I frogged it at least 5 different times just to make sure the stitch counts were right on. I was so excited....I'lll wear what I made but, I really really wanted a flat sun hat and not a super deep bucket hat. : / I'm certain it's user error and not her pattern. Anyone have an idea?
Hi. Really enjoyed the video. But I do have a question. When you increase does it matter if the increase is before the single stitches or after? You increase and then stitch in other patterns I have done they stitch and then increase. Thanks for the video. And your time.
Help!! My hat looks nothing like yours. I feel like I’m pretty experienced crocheter and this is just not working for me. First attempt FAIL! Sized up my needle. Still fail. The dome is not structured and the brim is a wavy mess. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.
You can simply measure the "crown" of the child you're making this for then just periodically measure the flat circle you're making. There are lots of size references available in Pinterest for pretty much all ages. Hope this helps.
Would this hat be soft enough for someone who has lost their hair from chemo? My friend will be having chemo over the summer and this would be great for protecting her scalp from the summer sun
The hat is very nice, but since I crocheted with a G crochet hook, like the pattern said, the dome came out too small. I’m starting over, but with an H hook instead. Hopefully it will turn out a little bigger.
How am I going to get the brim to hold it's shape and not fall down to my face. I can't get it to do that. I am crocheting with double yarn wich makes the hat my size. But how do I make the brim stay flat and keep it's shape?❤️
Hi, I love the hat pattern, and just now, finished one. I am disappointed because, the brim curves down and not out. Is there reason, you know of, for this to happen?
I am a new crocheter, I made it to row 24 and discovered it was way too small for my head, what do I do in this case? Had to unravel and I want to start over, would a larger hook work or do I need to add an increase row?
Thanks for this :) If we're making the hat for someone with quite a large head, will it fit as is? Would going up to a 4.5 mm hook be a decent way of making it larger? or would the stitches be too loose then.. Thanks! Sorry for all the questions >
Depending on how much larger you need it, you could add another increase round. I always measure the diameter of my increase rounds, then using that measurement(whether in inches or centimeters) I multiply that by 3.14. That will give you your circumference
I finished the hat. I used a 4mm hook, and the lion brand tape yarn. The way in the video was too small for me so I did increases until there was 12 stitches in-between increases. Then I did 16 rows of no increases instead of 11 or however many are in the video. This made it fit my head better. Overall I would do this pattern again but I think regular weight 4 yarn would do just fine, and I would personally get that instead because it is cheaper and has more color options and I feel it would produce the same results. Hope that helps someone !
Definitely helped me! My increases were not enough and I had to start over. I was looking for a comment like this. Thanks!

I am almost done with mine, it looks so good, my grandson wants one for him. I love the way you explain in detail how to make it.

Love this hat. The brim is the best I've found. I didn't want the usual floppy brim. Thank you for the very nice tutorial.
You just showed me the solutions to my brims!!! Now I can make me more of my hats, since I have to wear a hat every where I go. Thank You, Thank You!
Best crochet sun hat ever. Very simple and easy to follow.
Just finished mine, took three evening. Delighted with result. Thank you.

I love your channel moreover I am going to learn English with you 🤩. Thank a lot for sharing your labors with us.
Also just a tip - if you’re using light coloured yarn, you need a darker background & vice versa. The colours are blending in
I used your pattern to make a hat for my daughter and I gonna love it 😍
I thank you i have learned a surface slip stitch I am a older crocher so thank you love this pattern
This project was challenging. However it turned just perfect for me. Many thanks.
great hat, thanks for sharing your great tutorial and written instructions. so cute and beginner friendly!
Excited to start this projected.
Already took down notes while watchin the tutorial.
Thank you so much for the easy to follow tutorial.❤❤❤
Very easy to understand instructions. Thank you!
This is adorable! Can't wait to make a few! Your work is perfect. 😍👏

I can't find the written pattern... could you please send me the link.
Love this pattered and the yarn is perfect for this hat. I have made several in different colors. Thank you!
Thank you this was very clear!!! Thank you lots of fun to do as well!
SEWRELLA BEAUTIFUL HAT!! I BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS STYLE IM A BEGINNER
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING YOUR VIDEO PATTERNS IT GETS ME MORE MOTIVATED!!
I’ve made it. The yarn is super.
so cute. I'm doing it right now. I mean I just bought two big balls of raffia, and in the same color :) thank you so much for sharing.

Great easy tutorial. Thank you so much. I will be making one for my Mother who loves to wear hats. 👍🏻👍🏻❤️💐

I love your crocheting projects. I get your HAPPY YARN MAIL every month and I am always very happy with what you send . :)
Wow that was the cutest animation 😍

Hi I was sent over from the sparkley one.
Thanks for the easy to read pattern and great video! I have one question, though. The listed dimensions say that the diameter of the dome should is 6.75". Does this mean that the circle at the end of round 12 should measure 6.75"? If so, how do you get that with a 4mm hook?
Typo! I meant "diameter of the dome should be 6.75"
Thanks so much for sharing... I am in love with this hat

I would like to know the measurements as well
awww:) cute hat:) nice crochet project... but I could not take my eyes off of your cute dimple in the beginning of the video:)
I love it can't wait to make one.
So lovely, thank you for posting. I'd really like to buy the pattern, but I cannot seem to find it. The link just takes me to Etsy, but not the specific pattern. I have searched and it just doesn't come up.
Thank you for this pretty hat. I'm making it for my mother.
Love this pattern. I'm at row 39 and wanted to know where you place your hook to slip stitch over the previous row.
Hi, I'm new to your channel. This tutorial is very clear. I didn't watch it all yet. I have one question. I want to do the same thing with a 1.5 mm crochet hook and yarn thread. Should I use the same count of stitches or should that be changed? I appreciate your assistance in this.
My G hook reads 4.5 and my F hook reads 4.0. Which one is recommended as in the video you say you’re using a G yet say 4.0?

Gorgeous hat!!! You're so talented and refreshing!
Just wandering, sewella, can you make the rim wider?
Hi what is a good substitute for tape yarn? I've been trying to find it but it doesn't seem to be in stock anywhere close to me.
Thanks a lot, it's a great tutorial
Good job it looks really nice
I had to use a 5.00mm. Using a 4.00 came up too small. I have a normal sized head. Then I did an extra increase row to get a 7” diameter crown.
Thank you
Thank you for doing this.
Hi. Really enjoyed the video. But I do have a question. When you increase does it matter if the increase is before the single stitches or after? You increase and then stitch in other patterns I have done they stitch and then increase. Thanks for the video. And your time.
I love this pattern but would love to make it for my 4 year old granddaughter. How do I adjust the pattern?
Looks great!
Can you use a cotton yarn for this hat? I made a cover up and wanted to use the same yarn for the hat
Help!! My hat looks nothing like yours. I feel like I’m pretty experienced crocheter and this is just not working for me. First attempt FAIL! Sized up my needle. Still fail. The dome is not structured and the brim is a wavy mess. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.
I LOVE this hat!!!
Great project!! How would make this hat for a child size, or a larger size head?
Did you figure it out?
Su Lima I didn’t.
Using a larger hook will make the hat larger and a smaller hook will make the hat smaller
You can simply measure the "crown" of the child you're making this for then just periodically measure the flat circle you're making. There are lots of size references available in Pinterest for pretty much all ages. Hope this helps.
Nice one
what is the type of the yarn
Spiral round, can you use a bigger size of hook?
It's so cute will have to make myself one thank you
Would this hat be soft enough for someone who has lost their hair from chemo? My friend will be having chemo over the summer and this would be great for protecting her scalp from the summer sun
I just finished my hat and absolutely. The yarn is incredibly soft and light
I wish you would zoom in so we can see what you're doing. What substitute yarn would you suggest?
The hat is very nice, but since I crocheted with a G crochet hook, like the pattern said, the dome came out too small. I’m starting over, but with an H hook instead. Hopefully it will turn out a little bigger.
Love the hat.
How do I get to the written pattern?
👏I don't like hat but I will try to make this one but I have a small head.😍
I absolutely loOoOove it!!!
Really nice 👍 I’m going to try this
I. Can’t find the printed pattern . Help!
Very nice 👌 job 👍
Where is the written pattern located? How do I get there?
Very nice explain very clear
How am I going to get the brim to hold it's shape and not fall down to my face. I can't get it to do that. I am crocheting with double yarn wich makes the hat my size. But how do I make the brim stay flat and keep it's shape?❤️
Hi, I love the hat pattern, and just now, finished one. I am disappointed because, the brim curves down and not out. Is there reason, you know of, for this to happen?
So cute!! ❤ ❤ ❤
C magnifique
Merci 🌺
I am a new crocheter, I made it to row 24 and discovered it was way too small for my head, what do I do in this case? Had to unravel and I want to start over, would a larger hook work or do I need to add an increase row?
Hello, I made the circle bigger, so stopped at 12 intermediate stitches. What is the description for working the brim on this size?
Will acrylic yarn do good to make hats?
This is a must have.😍😎💜 Thank u
Thanks for this :)
If we're making the hat for someone with quite a large head, will it fit as is? Would going up to a 4.5 mm hook be a decent way of making it larger? or would the stitches be too loose then.. Thanks! Sorry for all the questions >

Wondering the same thing.
Depending on how much larger you need it, you could add another increase round. I always measure the diameter of my increase rounds, then using that measurement(whether in inches or centimeters) I multiply that by 3.14. That will give you your circumference
