5 years later and this is the best tutorial ever! So easy to follow, about to start my brim!

  • @mjw1976

I know this probably wasn't what you intended for this hat, but I crocheted this in black, gave the brim a red sc border, folded up 3 sides of the brim and pinned them to the body, added a crocheted skull/crossbones applique, and made a really cool (and relatively warm!) pirate hat for Halloween. Thank you for this pattern! I wish UA-cam would let us upload pics in the comments.

I plan to do the exact same thing with my hat, turn it into a pirate tricorn! I'm using a yarn made from nettle so it'll like like a slubby straw hat. Do you have pictures of your hat?

Fellow yarn junkie here. If I walked into someone's home and saw they had completely organized their yarn, I'd honestly assume they were a serial killer. That's crazy on another level. Lol. Keep it real and store your craft horde randomly in bags, bins, and cookie tins like our good grandmas taught us! 🤣🤣🤣

Lmao I have ALL my craft stuff organized very well because I need to be able to go directly to it when I need it. I have cube organizers for my yarn organized by color and the cotton yarn is on a rolling cart also organized by color. My cricut vinyl is in clear drawers organized by type. My paints are organized by color. Even my BOOKS are super organized. However, the rest of my house is a hot mess. 🤣🤣

As a person who can hardly crochet, I was able to follow you almost perfectly, and what I didn't understand was easy to pick up as I watched. I did leave a few of the last rows out because I wanted my brim a little smaller, but for me, it looks great! I finished it in one day, which also gave me an excuse to binge watch a tv show.

Thanks for your hard work on this! I'm going to try to modify it for a little girl. Maybe a smaller hook size? I'm never sure about how to make adjustments but at least so know the diameter/circumference of her lil head, so I can work from there. I also can't leave my house to get any floral wire, so the weed trimming wire I "liberated" from my brother-in-law will have to do 😂

I was marking a ski mask for Christmas And I couldn’t quite get the under Eye cover perfect it was either to tight and would hurt or it was way too loose and would fall off and I restarted it at least five times and then I was at the dollar tree and I spotted this floral wire and bought it to make some finger yarn guides and I had a genius revelation after watching this I could use it in my ski mask so that you could bend it to the contour of your face and it wouldn’t fall off
    Thank you

Beautiful hat and excellent tutorial, but I most loved your explanation of the process you go through to create both. And yes, most of my yarn stash is in store bags like yours. I keep some in nice bins I've collected over the years and some in fancy boxes (but I always forget what's where). The most useful is the soft plastic container from a quilt I bought. You can see everything, it zips and it has a little pocket to stash crochet hooks and scissors. Not elegant, but I don't worry about dust and I can see it all at a glance. Thanks for posting.

Bins of cotton, acrylic, wool. Those are then sorted by colors. THEN sock yarn or finer are on shelves. THEN my bins of WIPS or undo projects🤪. First I stash dive before I buy. So I am still new to this crochet game and I did this project without doing a gauge and I will never do that again!!! The hat came out too small, but I did a swatch and using a 3.75 got me at the 2 inc mark, hopefully the hat I make doesn’t come out too small. Can you make a video explaining how to make a swatch and what it means because I have to go from a 5 to a 3.75.

I made a hat with a 5 mm hook from a different video and it was too small for my head. Maybe I will use a larger hook. I have locks so I need my hat to be larger.

I’m loving this pattern! I’m currently doing it now but since the third row it’s like I’m 2 stitches short from what you’re getting. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong 😩

yep my yarn is a mess all over. One of my girlfriends has center pull yarn baller and in reballs skeins into... well what looks like toilet paper rolls. Lol. Thing is they stack so much more uniformly and any time she has given me a skein finding the "center pull string" was easy! So yep next weekend I am borrowing her winder for my mess. I wish my local Hobby L... or yarn store loaned out equipment like the winder. I just do not have the room to store yet another tool.
