    I get this video is a bit older now, but I wanna mention Language Reactor as a way to improve that effect even more when learning with subtitles in the target language. You can easily look up word definitions and create study lists for new words. Now if only Netflix had actual real closed captions for everything in Spanish. Sometimes they say completely different things when it's not proper CC.

    Right now I am watching the Spanish dub of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, with English subtitles. I try to not look at the words, and focus on what I am hearing, but use the subs as a context guide. Since I have already seen the series, and enjoyed it a lot, it's been a lot of fun. It is also easier to hear a dub for an animation instead of live action as it gives more wiggle room to mouth match the characters on screen.
    Though, that is more my easy going language absorption. On other listening videos, I do go with the Spanish subtitles. I just like to change it up and not overload my brain.

      I think it's possible to learn with subtitles in your native language, cause that's how I learned English (i think, i wasn't even trying) (I watched all seasons of Big Bang theory lol), you just gotta focus on what's being said.
      You made me curious on Shera's spanish dub (i watched it with both french and english dub and even if the french dub is fine, I much prefer the English one), i think I'll steal your idea and watch it in spanish :)

    @emi grace I watch Netflix with the free google chrome extension called LLN. That stands for "Language Learning with Netflix." It will have the Spanish subtitles on top and the English subtitles on the bottom. I like it because I don't have to keep pausing and looking up words. The translation is right in front of you. It helps me a lot. I think that you will like it.

      @@vibezinacan6804 Google LLN Google Extension. Download it. Log out of Netflix. Wait a few seconds. Log back into Netflix. Finished. You will see the extension on the bottom of your Netflix screen. Afterwards just turn on the subtitles as usual. They have many languages to choose from.

I don’t know if you’ve heard of the Google Chrome extension called Language Learning with Netflix, but it allows you to watch foreign language shows with subtitles in the native language and English. What would you recommend for someone like me (I know English and Spanish), but I want to learn Japanese & Thai. Should I watch anime or Thai movies w/ the subtitles on Japanese and Thai, respectively? I have a hard time with reading the characters and I can’t imagine keeping up while the anime or movie is going on at normal speed…

    • @emigrace
      @emigrace  3 роки тому +1

      first off, I love that you’re doing Japanese and Thai! that’s so cool!:) and tbh I really don’t have the answer to your question… it’s so different when the alphabet is completely different😭

    • @blasianking4827

      A little late but:
      For Japanese, make sure to learn Hiragana and Katakana (my Hiragana's solid, my Katakana's like 50% or so) first. But until you really get experienced it's gonna be hard to read the subtitles fast. So I recommend putting on Romaji, but NOT replacing the characters with Romaji, but having the romaji on top of the characters. How you do this depends; on Netflix you can use the Language Reactor add-on to have Japanese subtitles with Romaji(and it's helpful in other ways too, like picking out words for translation/copying to put into flashcards).
      Learning just Romaji is bad but it can help you focus on following along with what they're saying instead of spending a whole minute trying to read every sentence. As you get more advanced you might want to try dropping Romaji and see how you fare.

    That is kinda of a lie, because I learned Turkish just from watching with Arabic subs (which my mother tongue) and let me say that I didn't want to learn Turkish nor was I noticing that I could understand until I was surprised 2 years later when I accidentally watched a Turkish show thinking that it was with subs only to realize it wasn't midway through (one hour later, since Turkish shows r 2h per ep). I was shocked that I had to go to mom and make sure it wasn't a dream. It was such a cool way to learn without knowing it... 0 effort... Totally acquired.
