I'll definitely give it a shot. I'm trying to learn Spanish, using Duolingo, busuu and other apps. Though so far I keep dropping the other apps. Tried Falou and Drops, but just weren't working for me. Found a wonderful reading app Readle, but sadly you Have to pay. It was exactly what I had been looking for too! 😭

I've been a devoted fan of Japanese literature for decades, but I'm talking about Tanizaki, Kawabata, Mishima, and Abe. I've read Kitchen and Murakami, and I don't see very much connection between these generations, with the possible exception of Murakami's short story Toni Takitani. I find Ishiguro more Japanese than what I know of these contemporary Japanese writers. The one 21st century Japanese novel I feel is part of this tradition is Hitomi Kanehara's Snakes and Earrings.

100%. You have a great time because you have a great attitude. South Africa is a mirror -- it reflects what you show it. I am a 10th generation + South African. My genes are mostly Scandiavian and Irish with a smattering of Iberian and Indian. In the mid '90s I emmigrated to California. I did very well and made a lot of money -- but I was permanently unhappy. Every cell in my body told me I live in the wrong place. I'm not American, I'm not European... I'm African. I returned home 20 years ago and I have never for one moment regretted my return. There is cultural drift away from our origins and to our re-developed cultures. I'm white, but I identify better with the black people of my homeland than with people who look identical to me but have new cultural quirks I don't understand or like. I can look into a person's eyes here -- no matter who they are or what they look like -- and read everything I need to know about them... friend or foe. We can get along even if we're opposed in other ways, because we've had centuries to understand one another. I care about them more than people who look identical to me whose cultures I don't understand. Many times I had this discussion in America and pointed out that the black people of South Africa consider me African while they consider African Americans, American. They treat me as another tribe on the continent and the African American as a foreigner. So you nailed it -- we have learned to get along. Yes, we have a murky past... alas, that past is a little too close for comfort, but it was just a hangover of the same more distant past that prevailed EVERYWHERE. That's the nature of our tribal species -- we have always been suspicious of 'the other'.... but we're growing up and sorting it out... especially in SA. Also, Africa is VAST. It's landmass is much much bigger than all of North America. It's people are enormously diverse -- the most diverse in the world (because it is the birthplace of all humans). Just in South Africa alone (a landmass the size of Texas or the size of all Europe.... That's just the country of South Africa.). We have 11 official languages and tribes that aren't a little different to one another -- they are as similar in appearance, sub-culture and language as a Spaniard is to a Russian or Irishman. Their inter-tribal animosities run as deep as the wars that ravaged Europe. Most from outside Africa have no idea of the scale and complexity of this place. To just arrive and think you'll fit in because you look vaguely similar is a massive error in judgement. You have to put in the efforts, but, if you do, you will be embraced here by EVERYONE like nowhere else.

Let me know 😉. Sorry for writing her, but I could not find any other way to contact you 🙏🏼
