you watch TV all day anyways, so why not learn a language while you do it? from effectively using subtitles to actively imitating the characters, there are so many ways to make language learning with TV and movies interactive and FUN. fun fact: even if it's a show in my native language, i always watch with foreign subtitles! once you start, you can't stop, so let's visit a while and talk about one of my favorite topics 🌟 this video is long overdue!

I challenge you to take the Clozemaster 10 languages 10 questions each challenge. Pick any 10 languages video yourself taking the challenge and inspire us. (whether you have studied are familiar with or not). This is a fun opportunity to showcase your talent with a little bit of humility proving you too are human and still a language learner. You can put the flags of the 10 languages you choose for the challenge in both the thumbnail and the title and tag the video as #takingtheclosemaster 10 languages challenge. While also tagging the languages of the challenge. When choosing from a diverse variety of languages consider this, to include some of those you're familiar with, those that you are not, and those that you will later learn. Choosing to include a conlang like Interlingua and an ancient language like Latin will keep the challenge diverse while bringing recognition to these languages (you may surprise yourself). Consider getting a hold of Clozemaster they may be interested in sponsoring the video. We as a community of language Learners need a challenge that we can all appreciate and try together. To get the most out of the video challenge adjust the settings as follows: put the skills to listening, the question count to 10, and the mode to multiple choice. Then you can adjust the account to dark mode (as it's more attractive) and the default speed to 75% for better hearing the questions. Doing a dry run will ensure all the settings are correct. Keep a notepad by your side to keep track of the language scores. Before you end the video it would be nice if you encouraged other polyglots and language Learners to take up the challenge.

I learned more from TV than I did in 8 semesters of high school and college language courses, and years of online learning.
I change countries and have to learn a new language for work virtually every year. So now I have a system where spend a few days studying the bare basics, then I move entirely to TV and movies.
I always watch the same movie or show 4 times.
1st viewing: Fluent language + Target subtitles.
It lets me understand the story, build context clues for later, and get eyes on vocab and sentence structure.
2nd viewing: Target language + Fluent subtitles.
It lets me hear the language and catch colloquial phrases that aren't meant to be taken literally (very important).
3rd viewing: Target language + Target subtitles.
It allows me to follow along and check myself when I miss something.
4th viewing: Target language - No subtitles.
Trial by fire. I have to try to remember everything I learned in the prior viewings, and practice recalling them instantly with no help. This step is weird because it feels like I'm wasting my time, but I've found it cuts my learning time down immensely vs always having subtitles.
I attempt this cycle with one show per week, and it usually takes me about two months until I find I can skip step 1 entirely. After month three I can skip step 2, and After month four I can just watch movies in my target language without subs and begin reading novels in the target language.
Hey just wondering with any of these viewings are you searching up any/all words that are unfamiliar? If so are you storing them in flash cards or something to maybe do in between different viewings or is it completely just trying to associate words from target language with native language?

@@charliemaxwell8178 I do search them during the first couple viewings, but I haven't personally found writing them down very efficient. I get better results training myself using context clues. That "ah-ha" moment when I realize what the word or conjugation means locks it into my brain better than rote memorization.
But that's just me. It's likely not the same for others.

I agree reality TV is a really good option because they’re not putting on weird voices or speaking in a forced way. Especially certain countries will have their actors speak in a really unnatural way…
combining casually watching and rewatching shows with some kind of flashcard SRS system has been invaluable to me. I found some dubbed american sitcoms in my target language which I'd already watched in english and I noticed myself picking up words so quickly because I could easily guess what was being said based on the plot and the context
Been absolutely loving your content, it's been so inspiring to me as someone who has always wanted to improve and learn more languages but has always felt overwhelmed, too busy, distracted or unmotivated to do so! I am planning to do the lingoda sprint to get my French back to where it was in the past, and hope to use the extra credits gained if I win to learn Spanish! So excited to see your progress this year!

For the longest time, I was a current events junkie. So I combined the idea of watching TV for language learning with current events, and would watch the news. In the beginning, I would watch one of the network national news broadcasts (yeah, I'm that old) and local news to get an idea of what was going on. Then I'd watch that days newscast on Telemundo or Univision. While not a 1:1 analog, there were enough stories that appeared on both that it helped me learn new vocab and practice my comprehension.
National news allowed me to learn ways to talk about big events, and the local news gave me exposure to different accents and speech patterns via the local field reporters. Best of all, it was free. Drawback, there were zero subtitles then, so I was a strong A2 before I did this.
I'm trying to do this with my current TL of Swedish, but being a weak A1, it's been rough going. There's a Swedish teacher who has a weekly "language walk" on Saturdays, where she goes around town and talks about things...what she's seeing, small grammar tips, etc....in easier Swedish. I find I can understand about 70% of what she says...until she gets excited and talks faster. LOL
If only lingopie had my target language ;-;

@@MG-ro5jj complete Hindi by rupert snell with simon weightmon is really good. It has mistakes in it but like every hindi resource does honestly. Duolingo is really really good for learning Devanagari and alright to start off with. Hindi TV’s learn hindi series is good for grammar
Yes here I agree together with you to be honest on 100% that's really the best topics for those who wanna learn to their target language in no times and at least somehow will do this hard way to successful results more easier. So good video as always looks so shiny.

I’ve been learning German for a couple years now off and on. I’ve noticed that with Netflix you can change the language on the show you’re watching, and I’ve been considering watching an episode of Grey’s Anatomy in German. It’s one of my favorite shows and I think that could be interesting.
From personal experience, let me tell you: Don't get discouraged when the voice of a certain character sounds too different to the original (especially the case with Mer) -- it takes some getting used to.
Great ideas!! 💡 I usually start with the subs in my native language just to keep up with the plot and listen to the phonetics. When I am intermediate, I re-watch it with subs in the target language.

Here me out...commentary youtubers in your target language
Since you mentioned LotR, I can't help but commenting I've been rewatching the saga in Hungarian (I'm not a begginer though). Good thing Amazon Prime has both audio and subtitles matching in Hungarian for the trilogy. I almost watch no TV, I watch YT instead, and whenever possible I turn auto-translation on for subs.

The way I learn languages through tv shows/movies is picking one I’ve seen before and rewatching it. So for example I’m learning both Spanish and Japanese. With Japanese I usually pick a Studio Ghibli movie I love or an anime series I’ve seen before and watch it with subtitles for that native language. So instead of Japanese audio and English subs, the subs are also in Japanese, which helps me practice my reading comprehension skills. I struggle with Kanji a lot, most times when Kanji pops up it’s like my brain stops working so reading Japanese subs where there is kanji, I am slowly learning how to gather context clues on what a kanji word means. Is this perfect? Depends. For me I am a bit of a slower learner so there is still a lot of kanji I can’t read. (Why did they think having 3 writings styles for one language was needed aaaaauuugh)
As for Spanish, I’m more in the beginner/intermediate level of Spanish, so I mainly just watch telenovelas without any subtitles at all and can understand everything for the most part. A recent one I watched was one called El Niñero (The Manny) and I was screaming and at the edge of my seat towards the end. I didn’t understand some words, basically any words they used in the office setting because I don’t hear those words often but still with context clues I was able to tell what was happening.
Omg I also watched El Niñero!! I’m waiting for the second season now
The part with the double teapot (çaydanlık) made me laugh because I find the Turkish teapots interesting, too. 😅
But seriously, every time I watch a movie in another language I end up with 40 new words that I spend a whole week learning. It's the best exercise. 📺
😅 Only use subtitles when i don't have (can't find) my earphones.
I'm finally getting far enough along that I don't have to have the auto-stop on Lingopie.

If that doesn't sound like fun then you should try to play Clozemaster in concert that's where you just play some music in your target language or whatever and answer Clozemaster questions with the voices on.

"Embaraçoso" tem esse sentido de vergonha mesmo, não está errado, mas é incomum de dizermos "estou embaraçado"/"que embaraçoso" nesse sentido... acaba tendo uma conotação um pouco forte/séria, inclusive...? Enfim, de resto tudo ok!

I'm not study Spanish but I'm watching Elite because I like Aron Piper lol I use the audio in Spanish and the subtitle in Italian. It's impressive how much I'm absorbing.
