LOL I now know that I took the harder way of doing this. The dealer must have tried to convince me to have them do it and thought I would after them telling me this way. While I had everything down, I took the liberty of adding noico sound deadener and got rid of pretty much all of the rattles. See this as a guide to removing that panel just in case you have to replace something like the subwoofer or the wiper motor. 😎
You can just use something like needle nose pliers on the outside lens on one of the "teats" on either side of the cover and you can pop it off pretty easy. The bulb is hard to get to if you have big hands like I do. You can use packing tape folded around the majority of the bulb and leave some slack at the top. Press the tape against the bulb but not the socket and pull the tab/slack at the top of the tape and it should pop right out. I just got a 2017 Highlander.
Stephen Ruether I recently found out there’s an easier way to do this. Apparently you can pop off the lens with a screw driver from outside the trunk and get to the bulb that way.. I haven’t had the time to get to it or try it. I guess my service advisor was trying to get me to let them do it 😅 I’ll try it soon and see if it works or not.

Yes, it’s a 168 but 194 fits as well. Here’s the link to the bulbs I used. Awesome. How about the ones on the inside like the courtesy door light bulb, the bulbs for the passengers, etc? Is that also 168? And is the back up light a 921? Would that set of light bulbs that says it’s for the car interior, dome light, etc. fit for all the lighting on the interior? I have a 2016 highlander XLE
Cali4nia Angel I believe those are a 168 as well. All interior lights should be the same size. The reverse lights are 921 / 7440. I’ve replaced those with LEDs as well. Here’s the reverse lights I installed on this Highlander. iBrightstar Newest 9-30V Super Bright Error Free T15 912 W16W 921 LED Bulbs with Projector replacement for Back Up Reverse Lights, Truck Cargo Lights, 3rd Brake Lights, Xenon White www.amazon.com/dp/B074RFY776/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_rMAmEb3SYRW6D
Nick Wiley thanks! I am currently looking on amazon right now. I’m looking to get reverse lights and the interior lights and the license plate light. The brand I’m looking at now says auxito 912/921 that should fit mine right? It says that the highlander may take 7440 on amazon, but I checked on websites it says my car takes 921 for the back up light. And for the interior and license plate lights, I’m looking at a brand called Sirius led it comes in a set of 10 and the lights are not bulbs, they are chip lights. And it says 168 194 2825 w5w. This should fit my car right?
Cali4nia Angel No prob! Yes, those should fit. Some bulb sizes are the same and manufacturers use different numbers sometimes so they usually just list all of the different sizes their bulb is compatible with.
carlos costa Apparently you can get to them with a small flathead and pry the lenses out from the outside but I haven’t seen a video someone doing it that way yet haha. I also put more sound insulation back there around the subwoofer to get rid of a small rattle with bass, so it wasn’t a complete waste of time for me lol.
What the f@$k toyota! We happened to just prying up from the outside? Why did you have to make it this hard? Do you know how expensive dealerships charge for something aa simple as a light bulb replacement? Nobody wants to pay the shop $100 or more for something that should be an easy install.
