To check static pressure, that is, with the engine off, you need to take proper account of the ambient temperature (outside temp or garage temp etc). Then connect your guage and for 20C ambient temperature the pressure should be 65-70psi, for 25C the pressure should be 80-85psi, for 30C it should be 95-100psi.
Was looking for a vid on how to do this luckily I had bought the new one you recommended. Followed the advice and fingers crossed so far so good. Great vid.
Without connecting gauges or taking your car to the garage run the A/C for about 10-15 minutes. Open the bonnet and check the LP pipe (the large diameter pipe) that’s returning gas back to the compressor is sweating. This usually means the AC is working properly. Also make sure you use the AC at least once a month to keep all seals lubricated with refrigerant oil that’s in the system.
Don’t know why you recharged your system when it was taking the temp down to 9deg in the first? It was working perfectly well and wasn’t needing charging.
Had I not been trying to make a video on the subject I would not have added any more gas, but I thought I would try to add a bit more as there was room in the system according to the gauge, I have learnt a few things from the experience😮💨. Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
I wish I had spoken to you Bo before attempting this, the last time I recharged an air con system was in a garage with the vac machine, pre r134a😂 Thanks for the great information👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Exactly correct @andrew barclay. So many mistakes made. The compressor would be trying to pump liquid. R134a is no way environmentally friendly either. You are adding that type of refrigerant as a liquid (r134a fractionates), and you tried to remove the excess refrigerant as a vapour. Good tip….take your car to someone that knows what they are doing!
I have used one of those kits recently, the gauge works correctly if you turn the can upright and open the valve. Do not drain the whole content all at once, check the level of refrigerant 3-4 times and stop when needle reaches 90% of the blue region which that indicates the level is correct without overfilling the system and not being required to release gas into atmosphere. Gloves and safety glasses must be worn.
For the cost of the kit you might as well go to a garage where they will run an automated test and if it passes , evacuate the system and refill it . If aircon isn’t working , there’s a fair chance it’s leaked anyway .
My experience with this r134a 'replacement' has been very mixed. Firstly, I found it can't be used for 'topping up' r134a - pick one and use it exclusively. The dynamics of each gas is quite a bit different. I also found, once the r134a has been removed (or leaked out) you should not vacuum the system down: the replacement gas is installed into an atmosphere pressure system. This would be a huge no-no with r134a (moisture and acid form with air in) but the replacement gas doesn't care, and actually works better with air and atmospheric humidity present. Always best to do this by weight into an empty system I found too. The weight of the replacement gas is a lot less than the r134a weight too, so for a system that needs 500g r134a, you'd use ~300g odd replacement gas. The replacement cools AMAZINGLY well - ice cold... But here's the rub, and the reason I stopped using it: it leaked out on every car I tried it on - and I think the reason for this is the lower pressures involved. The seals in the scrader valves and the AC compressor are designed to have a certain pressure on them constantly to keep the seal gas tight - this replacement gas has about a half the volume and way less static pressure. I filled both my schraders with oil and watched bubbles coming up: replacing the valves didn't help. Installing gas tight brass valve covers with o-rings didn't help either, which is why I think the other seals in the system probably let it out. This pressure difference is also the reason why that gauge didn't play nice for you: it's designed to show norms on the new gas and the old gas mixed in with a higher pressure will show overcharged every time. Nowhere in the instructions will it tell you that, either! This is a GREAT video, showing all the mistakes, warts and all: had I seen this before I started experimenting with the replacement gas it would have saved me some time. Ignore the negative comments and keep on keepin' on!! :)
Make sure the hose you are using clicks securely in place on the low pressure port. If you don't hear a distinct click it may not be connected properly or you may have a faulty hose. I wasted a can of gas a couple of month back in June as the hose kept popping off. Bought a new hose and kept going until I heard a distinct click and this time all worked

Somewhere on the engine frame should be a chart telling you by weight how much gas you should fill. Plus amount of oil for lubrication. Much better to remove all the gas with a vacuum pump and then fill by weight, put can on kitchen scales while filling. Small car like that probably only holds a can for the entire system. better to replace all gas than mix with old.!
I did buy a very similar kit and although I did my best and made the system functional again, the gas started to leak out within days. There is far more to AC system refills then a DIY kit and a gauge. I had a specialist carry out an inspection on the car and found that the condenser was on its last legs. The moral of the story is: hire a professional to inspect and refill the system to prevent your car from more expensive repairs. I do not recommend trying this at home!
@@aaanton11 I used ac pro super seal and they supply a hose with no gauge on it, maybe that's why the gauge stop working because the gauge got air to it and the leak stop liquid could of stopped the gauge from working properly?
Sorry, but when you hooked up the charging hose, we did not see you purge the hose first. It looks like you just shot a hose full of air into your charging system. The only fix for this is to draw a vacuum on the system and refill properly.
Good grief...disaster averted! Digital gauge needed...i really don't trust the manual type... Have a foot pump with the gauge in the video...ok for bicycle tyres as you can broadly tell by the tyre...but my word...my heart was in my mouth when i heard the engine clunking. Hope the little car is ticking along ok now...
any idea why my aircon goes empty/hot within 24 hrs of being re-filled and makes a hissing sound when on? is the radiator punctured by a pebble or something, or is one of the lines broken somehow? i already got scammed by 2 different shops who didnt fix it. can i/how can i diagnose the leak myself and maybe fix it? thanks!
I used to use a local guy, recommended by a local garage. He came to my house and still cost the same as the national garages that just use a machine. His prices were much cheaper to replace components than anyone else.
gas has escaped, likely your condenser is shot. if your system has been regassed previously with UV dye in the system, you can find the leak using a UV torch
Hi! It happened to me the same thing! After I release the gas and having the right pressure, I notice that I get cold air but the compressor it is going on/off in intervals of 10-20 seconds. Is it normal? I can see the load on the engine in the rpm indicator as well. I do not know if it was before the same. Thank you!
Most cars after the 80s have a pressure valve which is what cut your compressor on and off.. You cant test PSI with engine off!! 😅 perhaps watch an instructional video before making one

@@Litesnip2022 I paid £25 Kwik fit 2years ago. Must have been on a special offer. To be honest the next day the air con was blowing hot air again. Poor service really as I waited an eternity and was told my wife's mini had passed their leak test.
Avoid Kwik Fit and Halfords, they have no clue of what they are doing, they don’t know how to properly diagnose and repair issues on AC systems, which is why in a lot of cases the cold air is only temporary. Take it to someone who knows what they are doing, or a good mobile AC specialist, in either case make sure they are F-Gas registered. Joe Public should not be allowed to touch these systems.
This is the worst advice I have ever seen... you may be able to detect an extreme shortage of gas on the low side of the AC with a gauge. But, the amount of gas in the system is measured in grams, not PSI, you are meant to refill the system with the specified weight of refrigerant. If the system is empty then fill with the manufacturers specified amount of refrigerant, if there is already some in the system, never just add another can... it's very hard to determine how much using low side gauge will be subject to over-filling. Good luck.
No PPE! 20,000 grand fine for deliberately venting to the atmosphere! i had some goon come to me he had 3 kilos of refrigerant in a 750 gram system.....absolutely no clue you people.....take it to someone who knows (not a tyre shop or half--ds).
Shit, am I glad I watched this as I was in need of a good laugh, don't think I've seen someone do so many things wrong in one video in all my days, what a moose🤣🤣🤣
It leaks out into the atmosphere over time that bit just did it quick I think the gas in this video is an alternative to the original type and is less harmful You can get cans that have a valve so you can remove the gas bottle from the nozzle and reuse it later on and this type of bottle when empty can be saved and used as a catchment bottle if you over fill Just put it on like you do to fill and when you press the trigger the empty bottle will fill up a little and take the System pressure down
Its still good as gold so I have to disagree, but I have bought the vac pump now as in this video, ua-cam.com/video/Z9yQtY6M9l4/v-deo.html Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
For that gas you just released youre car has polluted the same amount as driving 20.000 miles. And you riskt damage the airco pump, this is plane stupid!! Go next time to a specialist it's cheaper....
I would not be making an honest decent living if it was not for manufacturing industries producing goods such as this! Please do not place any product with leak stop in your system! It is designed to fill holes (Temporarily)! Leak stop will restrict and potentially damage your A/C system! If you embark on this procedure please check the can! If I get any wind of anything such as leak stop being utilised (Chalky or gooey substance at the service couplers) my equipment will not even go on the vehicle! Inverting the can in this video with engine running is liquid charging which is absolutely screaming out for big problems! A BIG NO! NO!… You will flood the compressor(Slugging)! A compressor will not compress liquid! I have seen compressors launched across the driveway due to this practice! Use due diligence and research! Oh!…Don’t get caught out expelling any Refrigerant gases in to the atmosphere! Prison time or a hefty fine! F-Gas laws are in place for a reason! The A/C system requires full evacuation of the contents… Pressure testing prior to recharging (You are attempting a recharge for a reason I assume)?… At least a 30 minute vacuum of the system to remove all moisture.. New lubricant (Leak dye etc)… Once all checks are complete then a system recharge can be attempted… Ensuring all system pressures and components (Compressor etc) are satisfactory… System checked post recharge and signed off!

It should fit the astra, did you have the right connector? Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

Solid advice 😁💯
Great channel been following and watching a couple of years now, on a new topic, do you know were the Bluetooth module is located inside the Aygo. Thanks Nigel

where did you get gun to measure a/c
link to one on amazon amzn.to/3aTKfta Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
is that hunting on /off a typical symptom of too much gas? our mk1 focus does that with a/c and ive never been able to fix it
The revs should drop slightly, but then recover, not hunting up and down constantly, it was more the hiss from the compressor that made me aware the pressure was too high, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Great point! Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Thanks for the great information👍🏻👍🏻🛠
That was very useful indeed.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks Tahir for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

I can't find any reference to a 'single use' pressure gauges - are you sure that was the root cause of your problem?
Yep, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
How can you get a 1 hit gauge just doesn't make sense?

@@aaanton11 I used ac pro super seal and they supply a hose with no gauge on it, maybe that's why the gauge stop working because the gauge got air to it and the leak stop liquid could of stopped the gauge from working properly?
Isn't releasing those gasses illegal
Thanks for the great information👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Sorry, but when you hooked up the charging hose, we did not see you purge the hose first. It looks like you just shot a hose full of air into your charging system. The only fix for this is to draw a vacuum on the system and refill properly.
Still works like a dream, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

any idea why my aircon goes empty/hot within 24 hrs of being re-filled and makes a hissing sound when on? is the radiator punctured by a pebble or something, or is one of the lines broken somehow? i already got scammed by 2 different shops who didnt fix it. can i/how can i diagnose the leak myself and maybe fix it? thanks!
you can try a can of this before the refill, amzn.to/3xyyopj Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Thank you!

This is not R134A it is a hydrocarbon gas that’s flammable and does the same job

Most cars after the 80s have a pressure valve which is what cut your compressor on and off.. You cant test PSI with engine off!! 😅 perhaps watch an instructional video before making one
Like this one, ua-cam.com/video/Z9yQtY6M9l4/v-deo.html its all about seeing what can happen if you have a go, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
You shouldn't hold the can upside down.

Kwik Fit only charge £25 .....
Be aware Nigel some of these garages will lure you in with a low top up charge only to tell you the system needed more work and you walk away with a empty pocket, Thanks for the great information👍🏻👍🏻🛠
£25? Very much doubt it. They charge around £50
@@Litesnip2022 I paid £25 Kwik fit 2years ago. Must have been on a special offer. To be honest the next day the air con was blowing hot air again. Poor service really as I waited an eternity and was told my wife's mini had passed their leak test.
what gun you measuring temperature and where to get one thanks
Good luck.
This video was to show what happens if you use one of the kits, you now know the outcome 😂 Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
No PPE! 20,000 grand fine for deliberately venting to the atmosphere! i had some goon come to me he had 3 kilos of refrigerant in a 750 gram system.....absolutely no clue you people.....take it to someone who knows (not a tyre shop or half--ds).

R134A IS the old not environmentally friendly stuff.
Thanks for the great information👍🏻👍🏻🛠
You're morally bankrupt for releasing all of that coolant into the atmosphere
it was only a small bit, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
It leaks out into the atmosphere over time that bit just did it quick
I think the gas in this video is an alternative to the original type and is less harmful
You can get cans that have a valve so you can remove the gas bottle from the nozzle and reuse it later on and this type of bottle when empty can be saved and used as a catchment bottle if you over fill
Just put it on like you do to fill and when you press the trigger the empty bottle will fill up a little and take the System pressure down
@@Qaz375 All R134a gas is the same in terms of environmental harm. It's better than the much older R12, but more damaging than the new R1234yf.
Releasing gas into the atmosphere not clever pretty sure you're not allowed to do that

A BIG NO! NO!…
You will flood the compressor(Slugging)!
The A/C system requires full evacuation of the contents…
Pressure testing prior to recharging (You are attempting a recharge for a reason I assume)?…
At least a 30 minute vacuum of the system to remove all moisture..
New lubricant (Leak dye etc)…
Once all checks are complete then a system recharge can be attempted…
Ensuring all system pressures and components (Compressor etc) are satisfactory…
System checked post recharge and signed off!
Thanks for the great information👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Why does the system need re-gassing when it cools down to 9.2°? At that temperature it doesn't need degassing. You just wasted £63!
