I love you guys! Your information has helped me more than I can say.
I had a total knee replacement on the 6TH of this month (December 2021). Because of the wealth of information, I am doing the exercises diligently and yes, painfully as all heck! But I'm doing my best to grit my teeth and push through each
session. And doing the exercises throughout each day to strengthen the muscles. It HURTS! A lot!
I embrace the pain...haha, with tears, but the postop exercises are essential for the best recovery!
So thanks guys! You're both my heros!

Really enjoyed your video. I’m a Physical Therapist with 30 years in clinic fitting custom knee braces. I recommended an off-loader to a friend who was told he needed a tibial osteotomy in his mid 40’s. The brace worked so well at reducing the swelling he only wears it occasionally now in his early 50’s. No surgery required and he’s virtually pain-free.

As I shared with you in a previous comment, I am quite active. Biking, Arc trainer...and my lifelong passion, competitive softball. My good friend and orthopedic Doc put me in an 'unloader' brace 18 months ago. It has worked beautifully. I wear it only when playing softball and it has almost completely alleviated the pain and swelling I was getting during and after tournaments. Though it is a little bulky it has had no effect on my running ability, if anything I am at full speed... and I have even learned to slide while wearing it. My team mates didn't even know I was wearing it until they saw me remove it after games. As you have stated on many subjects, there is not a 'one size fits all' treatment for any condition. I encourage your viewers to seek the advice of an Orthopedic surgeon and Physical therapist when dealing with their bone and joint problems. A body in motion is an important part of maintaining our overall physical and mental health. It was always included in my treatment protocol for my post op patients, especially those with cancer. We are blessed to have the health care professionals and medical advances to make exercise possible at almost any age. As always, a very helpful segment. Jim

When I first started seeing my orthopedic surgeon, one of the things he did was give me two braces (hinged ones) to wear when I was working out. I was surprised how much they helped to support my knees as I had previously had no luck using sleeve ones. Prior to my recent right TKR, I was having to wear the right one all day at work. It felt great the last time I took it off before my surgery, knowing that was the last time I had to wear it. Thank you for another great video.

Hi docs, I have had each one of those braces it was a process I had to go through before I had bilateral knee replacements. The custom brace was $1500.00 thank goodness my insurance covered that! I found the custom titanium brace helped the most I work in long term care and am on my feet all dang day. That brace was not the easiest thing to wear but it helped me make it through a shift, although it slipped a lot and I was constantly readjusting it. Nice thing about having that brace was that it’s got a lifetime guarantee and if you lost or gained weight they would make the adjustments. I’m set to go back to work after my TKR this January and looking forward being pain free! Thirty three years with 10 to go, I hope my knew knees last 😄. Thanks for your videos I’m a big fan👍

Can a brace help with weakness that causes misalignment up the leg and through the hip and glutes? I have an OLD knee injury from a downhill ski fall in the late 1980's. I was an experienced skier on the end of the day "just one more run" and was sloppy going too fast through moguls. I ended up cartwheeling with one binding not releasing and stopped with my foot facing "the wrong direction". A spiral fracture was assumed, but after x-rays, it appeared that my knee took the torsion. In the 80's the suggested recovery was ice, rest, and a long while on crutches. I've never had stability in that knee under load since. I could no longer ski as I didn't have stability or control through that leg. Fast forward several decades... I still love to run, but after 8-10 months I always have to quit due to knee pain and groin/hip pain. MRIs reveal no hip arthritis. I have unbalanced glute development and chronic gracillis pain. I also can't do squats as my knee falls inwards. I assume that 40-year-old injuries can't be repaired. I miss running...

I spoke with my GP bout my knee, regarding swelling of most of my leg all the way down to the ankle and pain in the knee. I told him how I was checked years ago by having a CT of the knee looking for bakers cyst. My previous GP sent me for X-rays. My present GP has me on wait list for an MRI which will most likely take a number of month just to receive the appointment date. But, I’ve waited 10 yrs so I can wait a bit longer. 😊

I had a custom made brace for my right knee as it has arthritis and a meniscus tear...I wore it religiously for months when I was on my feet walking about and at work. It actually didn't do anything for my knee or pain and made it worse and more pronounced to the point that most times before my day was even over I'd have to take it off. I paid a lot of money for it and now it sits in the trunk of my car.....I don't wear any brace at all. You'd think that it would make it better because it was suppose to offset the weight bearing on the medial side of my knee where the tear is....everyone responds differently to treatments and I seem to respond much better to exercise and improving my quad and hip strength and using hot and cold therapy in between. I even drastically cut down taking daily dosages of my diclofenac from twice a day to once every other day and sometimes longer or as needed. It just works for me personally and I know many people are different ...but I do have arthritis in my knees and meniscus on my right leg is torn and a slight subluxated petella too....

I’m active - I walk my dogs 3-5 km/day, train dog agility and play pickleball. Hi excellent video. I have a question. I am a 60 year old male. Had acl torn in 2000 and physio (bike accident with car). 2023 was working on car on my knees for part of weekend knee started acting bad. From there down hill 3 cortisone injections and very reduced mobility and gained a lot of weight. I do Tens treatment with ice to reduce inflamation and anti inflamatory. My pain in inside right knee, not outside. I can feel a lock inside my knee sometimes, as if tibia is back of femur instead of aligned. What brace would you suggest sleeve with metal springs on side or brace with real metal hinge on side ? I feel that a brace to stabilize my knee and bring my tibia forward would help me. Sometimes when I hurt a lot I put a rolled up cushion in the back of my knee to bring my tibia forward and it helps a lot and completely releaves the pain. If you see this thanks!

    • @TalkingWithDocs

Hi vitoshaword. So ankle and foot pain can come from the change in your alignment and the way you walk after your knee replacement. We tell patients that it often takes 6-12 months. If you wore orthotics you need to get rid of them typically or get new ones as your foot strike is changed. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did

Love your videos, Doctors! I’m 30 and have recurrent patellar dislocations. I’ve had the issue for over a decade which started from a HS sports injury. I really need an MPFL repair, but with two young children and my profession (ironically I’m a Stryker Sales Rep) I can’t fit it into my schedule. I’m considering a compression sleeve for when I’m backcountry hiking, or getting after it in the gym. Is my logic in thinking a compression sleeve could help reduce patellar subluxation correct? My other concern is that it’ll ultimately weaken the knee and I’ll become depended on the brace. Any truth to that theory?

The reason I ask is that I don't have a lot of pain in my knee (right medial), but some. I'd like to get a brace for hiking but don't want to buy an expensive unloader if it is not going to slow the progression of the OA. If there is some long-term benefit, the cost and inconvenience might be worth it.

Great topic and video! For myself, I cannot handle anything tight on my leg during activity because of how straps alter my patella (bone on bone lateral side), so an unloader brace (which needs snugly fastened straps to stay in place) is not appropriate for me. Plus both lateral and medial compartment are impacted equally. Nor knee sleeves - too many spurs and they never seem to fit in right place. However….when just standing around (eg dishes, cooking, etc) compression sleeves and thigh high graduated medical compression stockings are an amazing tool to reduce knee and associated soft tissue swelling (which reduces pain and increases ROM!). Controlling swelling is key to my pain control. They also cured my restless legs syndrome. Research suggests they should be at least 20-30 mmHg compression for maximum effectiveness to help return blood and lymph effectively back up the leg.

This off topic, first let me say I love your videos. I am going in for my second knee replacement surgery this Thursday. Did my left knee about 6 years ago. Please share your thought on Hypobaric Chamber therapy. We have a clinic in our town that offers oxygen treatments through hypobaric chambers to promote healing. Is this something that would really help my healing. They offer package deals with multiple visits at a very reasonable cost

Hi B D. It is an interesting concept but we are not aware of a lot of scientific evidence to help normal post operative healing. If you did ok the first time probably don't need it. It has been used in complicated cases however where there is tissue loss, infection etc. Best of luck with your decision. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did

Enjoy watching your videos. I am looking for some type of support sleeve to go around my knee, but I have a major problem. My legs are VERY large, I recently ordered a 5XL sleeve from a company and above the knee it is still too small. When I stretch the sleeve above my knee a couple inches it just rolls down because it won't stay on due to the size of my leg. Without getting a custom type of sleeve/brace, do you know of any companies where I could order a sleeve large enough for me? I have been all over the internet so I'm guessing you may not know of something I haven't seen online. But thought I would ask. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Regards, Jerry

Hi Jerry. This is a difficult problem for sure. Everyone’s legs are bigger at the top than the bottom so they do tend to roll down. You may require a custom sleek unfortunately. Sorry we could not be of more assistance. Best of luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did

Hi Goldie. Usually a tear is the meniscus will not cause instability. This is more indicative of a torn ACL. Best to get assessed and yes consider a brace. Thanks for watching and subscribing

With neoprene velcro strap type brace you customize it to your knee by how tightly you fix the strap duh. And you can get them for under 10 dollars.

I got my knee brace from my orthopedic doc on Tuesday and haven’t really worn it yet. It’s big and cumbersome to put on by myself. I was hoping for something more user friendly. Am I asking for too much? Probably. But I am 73 year old and not as flexible as I once was. That brace adds insult to injury.

I am wondering why no one talks supplements for problem joints, arthritis etc. There are a wide array of supplements that folks can take that can make a difference depending on the severity of the situation. While not approved by the FDA supplements should not be excluded from trying and an enormous number people take them on a daily basis. Surgery or knee replacements should only be a final option.
