      Umm yea nice straw man argument... Since most of them were not even around for the internet revolution... Now CURRENT God photographers like these use social media and have websites. Shoot, even Art Wolfe has all social media covered and books, and movies on Netflix. If all those Gods you listed were born in the modern era you bet they would be using social media to spread their ability and fan base.

    For all those who bashed me when this video came out regarding the video functionality of the A7Rii.......the just announced Nikon D5 records 4k for only 3 minutes long. EPIC. FAIL.

      +Jason Lanier For the serious video producer they are not going to spend 6 grand on a dslr. I'm a video producer and frankly I wouldn't even use a dslr for my work - perhaps 5 years ago, but not now. Conversely, this Nikon is for the professional photographer who could care less about its video capabilities.

    • @JasonLanierPhotography
      @JasonLanierPhotography  8 років тому +88

      +Alan Mauro yet it's amazing how nobody said the same for the A7Rii. My point is the hypocrisy is astounding. Nikons epic failure on the 4K video end is excused away while everyone and their mother made it the main complaint about the A7Rii...and the A7Rii exponentially better than the D5 for 4K video. It truly shows the bias in the industry.

    I had the choice between the D810 and the a7R II but I chose the D810 many because of the focus speed/tracking, the battery life, and the ergonomics. I can go an entire day's shooting with only 1 battery. Also, the Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 is much better than the Sony 24-70 (and it is a f/2.8 instead of f/4, but the a7R II's ISO capabilities offset that difference). Also, it has the same autofocus system as the Nikon D4s, Nikon's top of the line sports camera. Lastly, this is more of a personal choice, but since I have really big hands the D810 felt much better in my hands.
    I love the idea of having an EVF though. Love your videos Jason, keep up the good work!

    The amount of anxiety these videos induce in certain people is amazing. No really, a photographer just expresses his opinion about his favourite camera and lots of people become unglued, unstuck, irritated and completely moronic in their reactions. Let's face it, Canon and Nikon really have no clue whatsoever what to do with the current camera market. They keep on going the same way while the biggest part of the market is going the other way. Don't blame Sony. Blame Nikon and Canon because they clearly don't realise that they will disappear unless they clean up their act.

      +Enrico Benites There are great camera makers outside of Canon and Nikon. If I didn't have Nikon then I'd probably choose Fuji. Also, he's a paid sponsor by Sony so of course he's going to say Sony is the best.

    • @enrico_benites
      @enrico_benites 9 років тому

      Tecnically, Sony is the best in major items. Compare it in www.dpreview.com And about Jason Lanier, he says so many times, he isn't payed by Sony. I love and work with sony before I knew Jason. I bought one because it was better than it's concurrents (Alpha 77) at the time. I commented here, because where I live (Brazil), people don't have acces to brands or models, just a few...And always it's Canon or Nikon! People here don't search about the tecnichal details of the equipment. They don't compare. They just buy one or another, because "X" ou "Y" said it was "the best one"...This makes me mad! Just it...

    • @kalel33
      @kalel33 9 років тому

      +Enrico Benites so he does all that publicity, websites, and workshops for free? if so, Sony is the king of getting free publicity from good photographers.

    • @enrico_benites
      @enrico_benites 9 років тому

      As I said, I really don't care if he is paid, or not by Sony! I use knowledge and information to compare products! Repeating: I'm mad about people that don't search information, don't compare characteristics about products, acting like "monkey see, monkey do", like the majority in Brazil! If you are acusing him, he is lying or he is a fraud, contact him and tell this directly...It doesn't make a difference for me. Period.

      +kalel33 If you understood SEO you would understand why Jason tags Sony, Nikon, Canon or mirrorless on anything he does. He's delivering valid content, developing a following and increasing his internet presence. He doesn't need Sony's money.....Sony doesn't need his marketing. It definitely doesn't hurt their advertising campaign either. Don't hate, it's business. It's strategic marketing that anyone can do. You don't even have to be a great photographer! BTW...free websites, free publicity, but workshops are fee based. If I could travel around the world teaching my passion and charging a fee I would. www.southbayexposure.com

It's his opinion. If he wants to think it's the best camera is the best camera in the world then let him lol. It doesn't mean it's fact. What does it matter if you don't agree? Well that is what you are criticizing. You don't speak for everyone else. Read the comments. People are mad because of what he thinks and they are treating it as if it is the absolute truth. He never said it was the truth. He said it was his opinion. Thats the only point im trying to get across. Everyone doesnt seem to realize, in his opinion it is the best camera in the world. All I am saying is why are these people in the comments butt hurt about some random guys opinion about a camera that he thinks is the best? Disagreeing is fine but literally threating the guy because of what he think is ridiculous in my opinion. I never referred to only to you. My original comment was a blanket statement.

    I owned the a7r2 and a6300, both wonderful. But I ended up doing my best work and enjoying my Samsung NX1 and NX500. I hope Samsung comes back, it's INCREDIBLE. In the meantime, I also really like my new fuji xt2, and will be getting the Fuji gfx 50s. I'm set for life. The way I see it, for amazing photos and 4K video, my Samsung cameras easily trump the new 5d4, so will definitely last more years than that.

    • @clspectre9055
      @clspectre9055 8 років тому +1

      D R I started off with the NX1 and had all the premium lenses. I just sold it all off recently after a year because of the rapid decline in value. So I got out while I could and just went Sony last week. I think we can agree Samsung probably screwed up abandoning something with such potential but given their recent problem with exploding phones and washer machines, maybe this is how they're paying for ditching their NX1 users. To my knowledge, it's still the best 4K video camera - unfortunately I never touched the video being that I'm only into stills.

    Nice presentation Jason! I'm definitely keeping an eye on the Sony line... just took delivery of the D5, so I'll wait awhile before snagging a Sony to see how it compares in the work I do. I don't want a bunch of extra batteries in my pocket and don't mind the large size of the D5, maybe when I'm older, or have wrist problems, the size/weight will also become a factor. I'm impressed by what you're sharing here. I'll buy any tool that improves my end product, even marginally. Keep us informed, we're watching and learning. The style of work I do makes 3 minutes of 4k more than enough for me, my grabs are generally only a minute or less when story telling. For those who video entire presentations or events with speeches, that 3 minutes isn't enough, not even close. Low light focus acquisition (candle light wedding reception) the Sony hunts for focus a little more than I can take a chance on... the D5 locks it in instantly. In daylight scenarios, you're really onto something. Thanks again...

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn 8 років тому +1

      +Frederick Dunn Afterthought... I'm also one of those who feels the "need" for double card slots, for two reasons, one being capacity and two the image security. Though I have not personally experienced a corrupt card (hundreds of weddings covered), I've had friends who had career-ending failures when a card failed. Maybe it's just me, but I need that peace of mind. I agree that the buffer wouldn't impact me, but faster frame rate has been a huge bonus for stop action. You are absolutely right, the lens investment is probably the number one reason that people like myself just get comfortable with one brand and stop looking beyond Nikon (in my case) or Canon... we all think our lenses work best on the bodies they are designed for.

    • @RocketLR
      @RocketLR 8 років тому

      +Frederick Dunn I agree with everything you say. Especially with the security of having double card slots. I would never want to be put in that position were i have to explain to someone that the whole days worth of shooting just went down the toilet because of memory card failure...

    Anyone else coming in behind Sony for mirrorless will in my book be just wanna bees. I saw that Sony had what was to become the top system. I still use my Sony A7R and even with the much slower focusing system it is still a killer camera. I have beat mine up and it keeps on tickin. I too have not removed my Zeiss Battis 85mm 1.8 lens since I got it last month. That is one incredible piece of glass. I still use my A7R as my studio video camera as I record off camera onto my computer so I can record for hours as long as I have a large enough drive. As for single cards? I for the life of me can't see an issue. I have had my original 64gig card since I first got it two years ago and it has not failed me at all. I have thousands of images through that card and I always remove and replace it when I download images. Never once have I had a card hiccup on me. I do have an extra one because I feel that two years of hard use on the card is pressing my luck. I also have 4 new 1950mAh batteries for my Sony. Double the original Sony battery. I did over 70 minutes of straight on camera recording in full HD at 30 frames per second in quicktime format on one of the new batteries. I now have four of them. For the price of one sony battery you can have 4 of these puppies. www.ebay.com/itm/2X-1950mAh-NP-FW50-Battery-for-Sony-A7S-A7R-a6100-NEX-6-5R-5N-5T-3N-NEX-7-Camera/371383273989?_trksid=p3693.c100102.m2452&_trkparms=ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140212121249%26meid%3D9e9b2a955bf3422ba00d0906622825c5%26pid%3D100102%26

    There have been many unjust comments from those who have not tried this masterpiece of a camera. I agree with Jason in everything that he describes about this camera - I have just bought this camera and, together with a Zeiss Batis 85mm, images of people are just SO sharp and, without any post-processing, images look like they are out of a magazine - SO professional-looking. I am about to buy the new Sony 24-70 f/2.8 G-Master ... a perfect match ... and this then completes my perfect setup. I am tempted to buy the new Zeiss Batis 18mm when it comes out next week. Fabulous camera - absolutely great!!

    Before people go buying mirrorless cameras I suggest you try one and try shooting with live view or the EVF i find it a much less enjoyable experience compared to an ovf.
    I might point out that seeing in real time what your exposure will look like is great but only if you shoot JPG as most raw editors will open the files up and it wont look like what it did on the camera even if you use the camera calibration profile in lightroom.
    Even the output from Sony sponsored capture one express is drastically different to what you get in camera previews.
    My opinion if your going to buy mirrorless make sure they will take returns as if your used to dslr you could very well hate the experience of EVF and Liveview.

      +Stephen Gibb Honestly speaking, I have used both OVFs and EVFs, and I prefer (high quality) EVFs. That's just my opinion, but I'm just saying that I did what you suggested and that's what I came away with.

    • @mikedougherty8551
      @mikedougherty8551 8 років тому

      +Rationalific I shoot football with a Sony A77 II which has an EVF viewfinder. The problem with the EVF is that when you are shooting a runner zig-zagging down the field, the viewfinder only shows the last captured image until you shoot the next image. At 8 FPS, it is difficult to follow the runner although 12 FPS is much better. This is a real problem for fast moving sports. I've been using Sony EVF for several years and after shooting with the OVF in Nikon bodies, I still can't get used to the Sony EVF for sports. I do prefer EVF for general shooting though.

    Jason I am watching your video on your rebuttal to people that feel you are receiving some kind of remuneration from Sony Corp. for being one of the Sony Artisans. I look up to the photographers who have achieved that honor. And it never entered my mind that the Artisans are being rewarded with gifts of cameras, money or photographic gear. I am glad that you are a member of that prestigious group of artists. You have achieved that on the merits of your photography. I know of many photographers who have made the change to Sony for the same reasons that you have listed.

    I was Sony user, no doubt Sony cameras are amazing but here are two reasons why I am not one anymore: Warranty and Batteries
    -Sony won't give you a fair warranty support.
    -It doesn't really matter how great the camera is, if the battery can't even last one hour.

    GH4 records unlimited video, up to the potential of your memory card and battery life, and does not shut down the sensor at 29:59, unless you are ordering in Europe.

      If memory serves correct, it's classified as a "hybrid." Legally, that very well might be enough to get around the tax issue, but I'm not a lawyer so don't hold me to it.

Coming from a 35mm film camera and the reasons in your video, the Sony full frame was the best choice. The A7 is my first digital camera! I wanted the A7II however Sony couldn't decide when to release it. After watching this video, I'm so glad I didn't get the A7II. Instead I want the Sony A7RIi. Thank you so much for your opinions.

    I use the A7RII for astrophotography and it is amazing. Love the 4X digital enlargement, the remote shutter (and video) control and I can enlarge all my images with no pixelation from that 40MP sensor and so much more.
    I also have been a Nikon and Leica user (and still have those cameras) with lens that I have had for 50 years and I can use all of the lens (manual) including the Leica lens all with inexpensive adapters. Best thing that ever happened to the SLR camera was eliminating the mirror so that the focal plane is closer to the front of the camera and virtually any lens can be fitted to the body.
    Thank you, Sony - and than you for your nice video.

    Shot Canon exclusively for the past four years and never thought otherwise. The Sony a7Rii has literally been the best investment I've ever made. Any argument against it is easily forgotten when you see the quality it outputs. Sigma adapters to use Art series lenses, The new Gmaster class and not to mention you get the legendary Zeiss quality glass from almost every lens. Sadly it is time to see that Canon just doesn't hang for anywhere near the price range that Sony is giving us. I truly feel bad for anyone who thinks otherwise. Nice video, sir! I love that you are a realist like myself and tell people how it is when it comes to the petty squabbles of batteries and irrelevant nonsense!!!!!

    Used the Nex 7 back in the day, still using it. Iam glad to see, that sony really pushed their e-mount format. At the beginning of the Nex line the lens selection was quite limited. Also its nice to see the professional 35mm sensor Film cameras by sony using the e-mount. I would love to get a A7rII, but its extremely expensive for a normal consumer, but I might pick it up secondhand in a few years. I feel like the upcoming improvments for the Nex 7RIII might be as follows: 1. Better noise performance, 2. Faster burst mode, 3. second memory card slot (cards are quite small, iam sure they might be able to fit one more into the body, without making the camera much bigger).
    Lets see how long sony takes, to update the product. Sony has always been quite fast with these updates I feel.

    I still don't get the mirrorless deal yet... with pro glass (especially with an adapter) it makes for essentially the same size and weight when you are carrying around a bag of batteries, but then you've got the drawbacks of crap battery, idiotically narrow mount, evf, and most importantly severely lacking native lens situation. Just not worth it yet. So unless you are shooting with pancake lenses the size deal isn't so much of a deal. I sure love my A6000 for toting around as a toy, but for work I'll stick to my 5d III at least for now.

The ability to preview your exposures is awesome. The tilt screen. The WiFi. I would literally take the SD card out of my 5D and put it into my G7x just so I can upload it to my phone. For the life of me, I don't know why canon/nikon just refuse to put these features into their FF cameras. +Samson Okoro DXO rates the sensor in the a7R II as the best overall as decided by their algorithm, but not as the best camera. That's the difference. Also, the D810 still has more dynamic range than the A7R II and better image quality when factoring in ISO 64, the 810 achieves medium format quality when used at ISO 64, no other camera can do that except...medium format.
      You can read this for yourself on the new dpreview D810 review which shows comparisons between the D810 and medium format, it beats the A7R II and Canon 5DSR and slightly beats the Pentax 645Z. Again this is only at ISO 64, but that's still a big deal because for any landscape work or outdoor photography on bright days you'll probably be able to use ISO 64. Past ISO 64 the D810 still has slightly more dynamic range than the A7R II but we're splitting hairs, the main difference is ISO 64 which is a great bonus for the D810.
      BTW the difference between 95 and 97 or something on DXO is never something you'll see make a difference to your photography, so yeah, being top dog on DXO doesn't mean anything when the competition is so close. However, the difference between the Sony A7R II and a 5D Mark III is significant.
      The A7R II is a great camera with some niggles, the biggest issue with the A7R II is only one card slot, what the hell are they thinking? I would never trust a single SD card with the photos for a client, that's really irresponsible if it's for a one time event; I don't know what Sony were thinking. I still think the D810 is the best overall camera, it just gets much more right than it gets wrong. I look forward to a Sony camera with an AF point selector, bigger battery, dual card slots and a slightly heavier weight because some lenses are too front heavy on these lighter bodies.

      U just stated your preferences, there are many I have read comments from people who think most of the things you said is what they love most about the A7r 11, I have seen alot of direct comparisons between the Sony and Nikon and most of what I have seen proves the Sony is top. I don't understand why people always try to bring down tests when it really doesn't suit the result they want. When Dxo mark rated the Nikon D810 as the best overall professional camera which it was for a while no one said it was based on algorithms etc. In my opinion the Sony is the best overall camera in the market and the only minor negative to me is the lack of two sd card slots.

    I have all the big Nikon stuff and the Sony a7s a7II and will be jumping to the a7r II or a7s II. In the mean time I just picked up the Sony rx10 II and in my opinion this is the best camera in the world. 1300.00 dollars of pure magic. For this price, for what it does and can do is just amazing. I'm with you on Sony and their cameras. They are going for blood in this industry and are killing in the video market too. Can't wait for the next 18 months to see the Sony a7r III.

    Hey Jason,
    I absolutely thank you for actually using the equipment in actual field experiences. MOST of the comments people never used a Sony ever or not familiar with the system. overall. I was actually slightly leaning towards the Nikon D750 or D810 but the Sony a7R II seems to be much more up 'my' alley and promising for what I want to do. MOst the comments I read online sound just like people on this video's comments. Cry baby DSLR fan boys unwilling to accept and try. I used Canon forever but time for change.
    This video helped alot, thank you again

      +shadowjfd I don't think they had a hard time with it per se, I think they just have more stringent requirements. As a matter of fact, the ending comments were quite favorable, there just seem to be shortcomings when using the system for sports. Just like there are shortcomings when using it for video.
      "While many of our sample images are usably sharp by sports photography and news publishing standards, the issue at hand became more about what was in focus - and why the camera chose which target it tracked. There is no doubt that the a7R II delivers exceptional autofocus performance relative to the mirrorless market, but given the drawbacks of AF mode / area implementation, a lack of direct AF point control, cramped ergonomics and distracting screen blackout, next time I shoot the Seahawks, I'll take my trusty DSLRs.

      @an1_uk 9 років тому +1

      +kingalias it's exceptional focussing relative to the whole camera market. You do have control over AF point, though you just have to press one button before you get to move it around. You can configure the controls on the camera to your own needs. It's also possible to do back button focus.

      +Alan Newman the fact of the matter is the issue is for a very niche market. Sports photography is a very demanding, expensive and small market. Focusing of the A7r II is amazing, just not amazing when compared to the D4s or 1Dx. They noted that you could control your AF point in the review, and said it didn't work as nicely as smoothly for tracking as a DSLR does, and to get good AF-C tracking, they need to use wide-af, but that led to less precision of what target was going to be chosen (often the closest subject, which might not have the ball).
      It's like comparing a high-end laptop to a mid to high-end desktop computer. Sure, you can edit video on a high-end laptop, but you're going to get better results using a mid-range/high-end PC to get the job done.
      overall, the review seemed rather unbiased, and he even noted where DSLRs would fail in similar situations "Sadly, the repetitive color palettes of player uniforms, overall flat scene contrast and the underwhelming reach of a 200mm from NFL sideline distance meant an impossibly difficult scenario for the a7R II's 'WIDE' autofocus mode. It really struggled, moving around the frame apparently at random as it tried to identify a subject. WIDE mode only uses distance information to subject track - which means it can be easily confused by other subjects at a similar depth as your initial target. To be fair, many DSLRs work similarly, but pro-photographers will rarely use a complete 'auto' area mode out on the field. Instead of sports, the a7R II’s WIDE autofocus mode is probably best used in a scenario where a single subject fills a majority of the frame, and where you don't need pinpoint precision."

      +Alan Newman www.dpreview.com/articles/5684109129/lucky-number-7-shooting-pro-sports-with-the-sony-a7r-ii read the review if you haven't. It seems like a pretty fair review, and consistent with other non-biased reviews I've read of the A7r II. The A7rII is an awesome camera, it's just not perfect in every situation. I look forward to seeing what Sony brings to the market next year (both lenses and/or bodies).

    Excellent video Jason. is the low light capability of the Sony a7s2 worth giving up on the good AF? we intend to use Auto all the time when we shoot videos. Is a7r2 a better choice if we intend to use AUTO all the time?

    As a Sony shooter for the last 10 years or so I was always mocked at and told to "Buy a Canon". When I told those folks how far behind Canon was in IQ they would act ignorant. I am glad you put up a video which shuts the mouth of all Canikon fanboys. Get over it guys, Sony innovates and for us, this is a great time to enjoy technology. Wish I had the money to buy an A7R II though, for now its going to be the trusted A6000 :) GREAT VIDEO!!

  • @bobhanuman65

    I returned an A7s and sold my a6000 and got a used Nikon DF and a used D750. It was taking a lot more work to get reliable focus and great images from the Sonys. I really wanted to like them and initially I thought they were awesome but it seemed like only about 1 out of 2 or 3 images was really in focus. I also got used Nikon glass at a fraction of the cost that new sony lenses would cost. I couldn't be happier.
    Oh did I mention that battery life sucked and the retarded menu system is totally annoying.
    I get the most awesome street shots in Manhattan driving in my car and shooting through the window with the DF and a $300 lens.
    Granted you can get great work out of an a7rii or a7sii, tons of folks are doing it. The eye tracking works pretty well also. But there has been so much marketing garbage out about the Sony cameras lately.
    Do yourself a favor. Rent them for a week before dropping $3k or more. You won't regret it. And after that if you find that the a7rii is really the best camera in the world. Then go for it. But just realize no technology will make you better photographer. Just don't fall for the hype before you really check out results for yourself. BH also has a great return policy.
