  • This is Ultramarine Violet, PV15. It’s a beautifully lightfast and semitransparent violet with a small drying shift.
Like its brothers and sisters in the Ultramarine family, this violet is (mildly) granulating and can’t handle acidity very well.
Ultramarine, or the Latin, Ultramarinus, means beyond the sea; since the original pigment made from Lapis Lazuli, was imported from Afghanistan. But why is this violet names after a blue, semi-precious rock?
The original method of making PB29 was the result of a contest to find a stable, modern pigment that was cheaper to make than the genuine thing, held in France and eventually in 1826 the synthetic blue we now know was introduced (more about this soon!)
Very simply put, Ultramarine Blue is a mix of kaolin, soda ash, coal, charcoal silica and sulphur: These are heated and you'll get a green pigment PG24.
A video of that pigment and comparison is here: • Brought back to life ....
If oxigen is allowed during the cooling process, this this green will oxidize into a blue pigment, PB29.
By adding components to PB29 and reheating, PV15 is obtained. Only after this process, with different temperatures PR259 can be made, Ultramarine Pink
Some PV15’s and PR259 are very similar if not the same in hue. PV15 however, ranges from beautiful deep pinks to almost Dioxazine like deep violets to hues that are almost blue, especially when made into paint.

Thank you Laurens, ir's so satisfying watching the pigment meld into the binder, I do have a PV15 in my palette but it's nowhere near such a rich hue as this lovely paint.

Thank you! It’s quite a rich version, though not as granulating as some others.

It’s one of my favorite colors for shading with it’s so subtle and in light washes works really nicely to add depth to a piece without being overwhelming like Dioxazine. Your batch looks great!
