- I’m exploring the secret power of MARKERS.
Watch the extended version on Nebula: nebula.tv/sara...
I never knew markers could create some of the realistic art I’m about to show you. And with either alcohol markers or water-based markers, you’ll be surprised at what you can create!
A huge thank you to Kat Young AKA @Katartillustrations for all her wonderful advice.

Thankyou so so so much for having meeeee!!!!!!!!!!! This was SUCH a blast!
Also you TOTALLY made me proud did you SEE that finished piece? Gorgeous!!
You are a genius! Period ❤
yesss
ANOTHER alcohol marker blending tip! Similar to the water based markers, you can colour with one colour on plastic (like a take away container lid) and then pick up that ink with your second colour to go from one colour to the other instead of touching the tips together 😁
I follow you on IG, this is awesome that you did a collab with Sarah! This was really cool, thank you.
You're absolutely amazing! I'm going to subscribe to your channel right now! 🥰
Forget the markers. I want her hair!!!! So gorgeous and reminiscent of Danse from gem and the holograms
It must have been so expensive to have done... but it looks amazing. ❤
@@aliceDartsI actually just do it at home myself 😁😅
* googling the reference * 😆 Thankyou I’m glad you like it!
@@Katartillustrations wow! You have some serious talent! I do my own hair too but I can only do two colours at a time. Please take care!
@@aliceDartshaha the unexpected bonus’ of being obsessed with colour theory 😅😅 Thankyou! 💜
THANK YOU for finally talking about Olo markers. My MIL runs a scrapbook shop and she recently switched from carrying a full Copic line to a full Olo line. I've personally grown up using Copic markers, but I feel like the Olo markers are a great affordable option. But I haven't seen any good YTbers trying them out. Thank you for this deep dive into possibilities!
She says it at around 16:35. It sounds like a video that I will be looking out for. 😁
The eyes & the portrait look so beautiful! 😍 Such helpful info included throughout the video too.
Also, I'm so glad you brought up the paper choice! I have Blending Card I keep forgetting to practice with.
Using a paint brush with water based markers is fun! I enjoy using that technique with acrylic paint pens as well.
OMG I follow her on IG!!! I love her art and the patience she has to layer all those markers in order to create realistic light is SO IMPRESSIVE!!
Omg HIIII!! 😁😁🥰🥰🥰 you’re SO lovely, Thankyou!!
Just get paper label stickers and colour them in, then stick to the markers. if they don't stick well just use transparent tape to tape a portion of them down to the marker. You'll never have to swatch them repeatedly or match numbers again and saves so much time; unless you are specifically looking at how a colour looks on a specific paper type
Kat feels like she's a very calming person to be around.
I bought a bunch of different types of papers while on vacation in Asia this summer. I will have to try them all out soon!
The last hurdle for alcohol markers for me now is choosing colours, esp because copics are so expensive 😅 great video, was wonderful to see Kat's process and how you picked it up so quickly!
I used to do a lot of art using alcohol markers....far from the level Kat Young, but I know alcohol markers and watercolor markers allow for some really stunning art. As I moved on to developing myself more as a fine artist, I dropped using alcohol markers and even watercolor markers because of the high fading/no lightfast problem. I'm sometimes tempted to go back to them because I enjoyed them so much and created some really nice work. And I know that I can get archival/lightfast prints made if I want to sell or show the work. Thanks Sarah & Kat!
Thank you Sarah Renae and Team, I really appreciate you showing us different medias to work with to create artwork! I am looking forward to your next video
Kat’s technique is genius! I love what you were able to create at the end Sarah!🔥
🥰🥰🥰
It was so good to see Kat! I used to watch her on Insert Art. By the way the water-based colorless blenders are just a 2:4 mix of glycerin and distilled water.
Thanks!
Idea of undertones is scary, but the end results look so amazing! This video is gold, thank you Cat for giving your time for us and Sarah for compressing it🙏
Bet part is it’s scary but you can just keep trying till it’s not and it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t work the first few times cos it’s all about learning and experiencing how to use them and not the outcome at that point 😉😆
As soon as the video started I said "Ooh, Kat!" She's so amazingly talented and judging by the results you got in your art works, she is a great teacher too. I've dabbled with some alcohol markers and got frustrated with them like many other people. I do think I didnt have good paper for them, and seems like they are a lot more unforgiving than some other mediums when it comes to the surface you use them on. You have inspired me to give them another go :) I am looking forward to the next video because your comparisons are always SO thorough and such a great resource for being able to choose the best items for my budget.
Hahaha hiii! 😆🥰
Your deep dives are always so informative and easy to follow. Your final pieces are stunning and while I love the rawness and texture the water based gives, the alcohol based one is just so good! Kat, you are a wealth of knowledge and I loved seeing you teach 🙌 ❤️
Have you found a fave marker Aussie crafter? I feel the need to retry them all 😅😅
Thankyou so much lovely 🥰🥰
I use alcohol markers as a fine art medium and I think that every single art paper marketed for alcohol markers, EVERY SINGLE ONE, ranges from truly awful to barely acceptable. Also, marker papers only come in relatively small sizes so if you want to work large, you can't. If you want to try a truly magical paper for alcohol markers try Knight Smooth White, a paper that is made for the print industry. It is a bright white paper that comes in sheets of up to 100cm x 70 cm. It comes in various weights from 200 gsm to 400gsm. Although the markers will bleed through to the back, I have never had it transfer to the sheet underneath. Best of all it's really cheap. I buy the 400 gsm in the 100 x 70 cm size and I create works of that size. It comes in reams of 50 sheets and with postage to Tasmania from the mainland was $216 (albeit a couple of years ago). That comes to around $4 AUD per sheet.
Have you tried X-Press It Blending Card? Being in Tassie I would’ve assumed you have but as you mentioned you hadn’t found one that comes is big sizes I thought I would check. X-Press It comes all the way up to A1 size, works out at about $6aud per sheet at that size so a bit more expensive, but it’s the paper I have really enjoyed using 🙂
I’ll have to look up the Knight paper, do you know if it’s archival ?
Ooohh I just saw it comes in other colours toooooo 🤤
I use the colourless blender when I want a more traditional watercolour effect - I saturate the paper with the colourless blender until it can't take any more and then I go in with the colour. Once it dries the gradient is very gradual and flawless.
I made a video trying this to do wet on wet and now it’s my favourite way to do backgrounds!! So fun!
if insert art comes back these are the kind of tutorials id like to see more of. miss seeing Kat ♥
This is what I really wanted to do on IA. Ah well!
@@Katartillustrations I still have my fingers crossed and hold onto to hope it can come back and you still can do stuff like this eventually. damn YT algorithm 😞
Her talent is beyond amazing ! who'd have thought markers can be used like that, thanks for showing us
Thankyou 🥰💜
Thanks for the informative video Sarah. It is nice to know of he difference between water-based markers and alcohol-based markers. Looking forward to your next video.😍
The word youre searching is non-porous 😊 stunning artwork ladies!!
THAT!
So great to see Kat. I miss Insert Art.
She was really wasted on there though. She has this incredible talent and it wasn't showcased on there at all.
🥰🥰🥰🥰💜
@@rof8412ahh thankyou 💜💜 I am very slow and clunky at digital (which is why I was supposed to be the transition artist 😅) so it definitely wasn’t my strong suit, ah well, it was a really fun experience nonetheless the less! And now I have a bunch of awesome art friends out of it!
Oh my gosh! I JUST followed Kat on Instagram like 24 hours ago! Her way of drawing lighting is SO COOL!!!
Ahhh hiiii!!!!! Thankyou for being so kind 🥰🥰
This is an awesome video! Good to have you back. But you didn't mention the best paper for water-based markers and alcohol markers because you said it's different..
I know they said the alcohol marker one was 'Blending Card' and the water based markers was Watercolour Paper, I hope that's helpful!
@LizGridleyArtist Oh, I must have missed that! Thank you very much!
I love your channel, enthusiasm, and teachings. I learn so much. Not only have I improved in my art. You have built my confidence too. Thank you so much. Thank you also for the referrals to other tubers. Brilliant Sarah thank you. 👏✨
I’m just getting into using markers, so this was SUPER helpful. Love love love the artwork and vibes from your channel! Can’t wait for the next video!
Such an inspiring video! I'm looking at my alcohol markers in a whole new light. I work on a glass surface with alcohol markers, so the bleed through isn't an issue. Ohuhu sends a heavy plastic sheet with their marker paper to put in between pages so you don't get any marker on the next page. Something similar would work with coloring books, too. Again, I absolutely loved this video! ❤️
Absolutly loved this one I'm here to watch again and take notes 😅❤ markers seen to be both so simple and so complicated! Breaking it down to right paper for right marker is great to define thankyou!!
Wow - this was mind bending- in all the good ways! I had goosebumps as i saw Kat’s pieces laid out. Blown away!
The pencils in the Vegemite ! 💀 as a fellow Aussie, you have made me proud sarah
Great to see Kat again, I must look up her channel. The growth in your drawing Sarah is a real testament to what a difference time and practice makes. Thai new format allows you to basically practice as your full time when focusing on one of your deep dives and you work is growing exponentially. Was great to see some new techniques with alcohol markers, which I m fairly new to, but I torn about the water based markers. The extreme techniques with water (like mixing them in a palette) just make me think, why not just use watercolour paint instead?
🥰🥰
So awesome to see Kat again. I miss her and the rest of the gang from the Jazza channel.
We miss everyone too 💜💜
No matter what type of art supplies you are using, pencils, markers, pastels etc. It almost always comes down to the paper! If you try out crayola crayons for excample, you get a whole other experience with the right type of paper vs the "wrong" paper. Paper is super importatant! 😊
Great video with so much useful advice!
To swatch markers with no name or number, put a piece of tape on each, and assign them a number or name. Then, swatch as you normally would.
that silent yay kat made after asking sarah if she's having fun was just so cute 🙃☺♥
😆
Her hair is stunning 😮❤
I love Kat’s art!!! I’ve bought some of her prints and was not disappointed 😊
Thankyou 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you to both of you. Love your artwork
Your haircut is lovely! 🥰 It would be wonderful to know the right type of paper for each kind of marker!! 😍 I would love to see more on watercolor painting with water-based markers! 🤗 What is the difference between water-based markers and water color markers? 🤔 Kat seems very informative on this topic and quite sweet! 💖 I love her hair!! 🌈
Seconded. Paper for each marker type and each method would be super useful.
What a super fun video, I didn't know this existed! And I'm still just trying to get the hang of base layer for colour blocks.
From my initial look at both, I think watercolor markers are just more juicy. And usually priced a little higher. Otherwise I suspect they are the same? It’s something I want to figure out in my next video
@@SarahRenaeClark I'm excited to see your next video on markers!! 🤗😍
@@coldeagle5241Thankyou 🥰💜
My favorite markers are Copics paired with X-Press It Blending Card. It's my experience and understanding, at least with Copics, that you're supposed to see the ink come through to some extent on the other side of the paper after layering. This is normal and expected.
I loved watching this video! Thank you for this! And I love the portraits you created with the different markers. Now I feel inspired to take my markers out this weekend and create with them, they’ve been neglected in my cupboards and need some love.
great video! beautiful marker paintings! and cute haircut❤
Brilliant. Timing is impeccable. Just started playing with markers and bought a cheap set to start with. Thanks Sarah and Kat. (from a very windy and wet Tasmania. At least we have power still on)🤩🤩
🥰🥰
I cannot wait to try Kat's way of using markers! It looks amazing😍
I hope you have fun with it 💜
Girl your hair is hairing!!!!!! I am in love with your videos every time you make one I get so excited keep it coming😉
Hello Sara. I absolutely LOVE your artwork here, those pictures are amazing!! TYVM for showing us how to use markers properly. That sure explains a lot of why my pictures never turn out. You've given me new marker hope as I was about to toss them..... but seeing what you did with the crayola markers as well. WOW! I'm quite excited to re-try my markers for art! Take care and see you soon. 🤗😘
GREAT TO SEE YOU AGAIN AFTER SO LONG, I LOVE LOVE YOUR VIDEOS, LOOK FORWARD TO SEE THEM BYE
I freaking love seeing the 2 of you collaborating like this. Such a joy to watch!!!! Both super talented artist I look up to in the space!!!🤩🤩🤩
Wow! i loved some tips on the use of markers ❤🎨. The important thing is that you can use them as needed...and if the type of paper for each material is important.
You put so much time in the production of this video! And it's AMAZING! Thanks for sharing I've learned so much!
Probably the best marker video I’ve seen.
That’s saying a lot because I’ve been watching marker videos for over 2 years
Kat is amazing, gonna follow her. Gonna look for your video on all your markers.
I love your alcohol markers portrait. I can see a little Kat influence with the hair colours (I am jealous of her hair).
With Crayola's (lack of numbers and name), maybe create your own numbers and swatch them. I did that with the Faber Castell Black Edition pencils.
I really wish they would change the name of the blender to something more accurate. We all make the rookie mistake of trusting that name and try and blend.
I think I was using water based markers over clear gesso and I got a little blending happening, only because the gesso kept the ink wet for longer.
It should definitely be called a "colorless marker" not a colorless blender. I've noticed a few brands are labelling it "zero" and I think that's a good option!
Your pictures look so beautiful! 😍 Great job! I recently bought Cali art alcohol markers and I have no clue how to use them. I will try these techniques. Thank you!
This is amazing!!! Thank you guys!!!
Thank you so much for sharing all this valuable information about markers. I was about to donate my water-based markers and I think that I’ll give them a second chance.
The artwork is so beautiful. It almost hurts to think of how fugitive marker ink is 😭
Kinda cool too though - it’s only here for however long it lasts so enjoy it while you can. Also that’s why prints are awesome haha
Such a great video! Your artwork is simply beautiful and Cats was mind blowing. I never knew. Cannot wait to see your marker TY both for the education and the inspiration 💜
This came at an unexpected time for me! I just put my colored pencils down for a minute and picked up my markers about a a few days before this video and was getting frustrated because I was struggling with the whole process. I bought marker paper (wal mart marker paper) and I was going to give up as this medium is just for under painting UNTIL I saw this.😂 Thanks for this. You restored my confidence!!
Another very fun video 😁🥰 and how wonderful to see Kat! I think you did her proud with your beautiful portraits 😊
She totally did!!!
The art is amazing!!! Thanks for this video!
Instead of using gesso as a primer for alcohol markers, I've found that matte/gloss/satin acrylic mediums or even pouring medium works way better. The texture is slicker, and more importantly, they are less absorbent so the marker stays 'open' for longer, thus giving you a more similar experience to blending cards/yupo.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Underpainting with markers?????!!! Absolute genius! ❤
Can't wait to try!! Thank you!!!
What an amazing video with two amazing and fantastic artists! Kat has such a joy and a way of teaching ( and her art is absolutely amazing!!) and I love the way Sarah just runs with the information and creates amazing pieces! This will definitely go in my list of resource videos to be referred too again and again!
Thank you so much!
Great finished pieces for both mediums!!! This was great and love the teaser of more to come
This is perhaps the most informative and helpful art guide that exists. Thank you for letting us learn alongside you. It's both entertaining and wildly inspiring. ❤
I recently watched several tutorials about realism and still life using markers. I had a difficult time with it. I didn't lay down the areas of colors or blend them well. It looked horrible. It showed me that i need more practice and patience using markers for anything other than coloring. If only this video had been released a few weeks prior to entering the contest i did that for.
I love your videos Sarah! I’ve been a long time supporter even before your UA-cam adventures!
I came across your color catalog being reviewed by Baylee Jae many years ago, bought it myself AND LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT IT!
Since then I’ve been following your creative journey and evolved quite a bit myself. I love your products, your creativity, your sincerity and especially the useful knowledge and information you cram into these videos. THANK YOU
🙏
Thank you so much!!
I have wanted to paint with markers so badly but never could get started because it always looked terrible. I never considered the paper's pore-ocity. Sounds like the holy grail of solving marker issues so I was waiting eagerly to see what paper you were using after making the big point about the type of paper that matters that I was mentally distracted after a while. I checked the description and you mention the watercolor paper there for the waterbased but I'm interested in the Alchohol markers. I kind of wish you mentioned which paper your guest artist suggests and is using before you showed us your process so I wasn't distracted the whole time lol. You did a good job with the piece and a lot of the points helped me. If it is at the end of the video then sorry but I would have been content with a 'we'll explore the paper types later in the video (I really hope I didn't miss you say that )
I use X-Press It Blending Card 💜
Sorry you missed it! I mentioned it briefly and it’s the first link in the supplies in the description:)
Xpress-it blending card
Wow thank you for this video Sarah!!! I learnt so much! ❤❤❤
I'm so glad!
Some years back I used Crayola markers, on occasion, for coloring work. And when I used them on decent paper, I could get some very good results. The big difference for me, against the more expensive markers was that I had to work harder with the Crayolas to get the "finer" lay down and softer blends that was much more easily accomplished with more expensive markers. Tombow Dual Tip watercolor markers were & still are my go-to for watercolor marker work. I even did a side by side comparison one time. I did 2 small very similar drawings (an abstract floral I think 🤔 ) on each page using the same quality watercolor paper. I used Tombow on one side and professional grade watercolors on the other. If I hadn't marked what each was, I could not have told the difference. Having heard, though, the raves about Zig Clean Markers. I think I'm gonna get some and give them a try too. Thanks 🙏🏼
Wow! Such beautiful images!
This is a great video. I love colouring with my markers. I miss seeing your videos.
The art is STUNNING!!!!! ❤❤❤
🤩🤩🤩 how lucky are we to see such amazingly talented artists join each other on UA-cam and share their work and methods with us, just WoW WoW WoW!!!
Question for Sarah you said alcohol markers bleed through every paper, have you tried the Ohuhu bleed proof paper? I was looking to get that as it shouldn’t bleed through, however if it still bleeds I might just stick with the paper I know and use more often.
Bleed-proof paper will stop it bleeding into the page underneath. It won’t stop it bleeding through to the back.
@@SarahRenaeClark thank you so much for your reply 🙏🏼
I used to buy expensive copic paper that came with like 20 sheets for 8€, but I found simple thick-ish cardstock works just as well. Would love to hear Kat's opinion
Copic sent me some of their paper but I haven’t had a chance to try it yet (I’m collecting a few more first so I can compare everything all together)
I use X-Press It Blending Card and there’s a 250gsm printing card I have tried before which initially seemed identical, but as I layered I realised it wasn’t working right (ink couldn’t blend, colours kept deepening rather than flattening to one colour etc) so it didn’t work for me and my style, however if I were to do like 3 layers of flat colours only it would be perfect.
So I guess the right paper for you depends on what you want to do with it 💜
@@Katartillustrations Thank you so much for your professional opinion ❤️
Even though you can create great art with markers, they are not meant to be fine art material, but a medium for reproduction. Dye-based markers are never lightfast and often unstable in the dark, and pigment markers just don’t work the same way. So, if you want to save your marker pieces, scan them as fast as possible.
It is way easier and cheaper to achieve a similar look with traditional watercolor with an added benefit of the work being archival, or at least having a chance to be archival.
OK, so I can sum up my thoughts on this video in one word: WOW! Thanks to both of you for your clear explanations and samples. Lots to think about!!😎
Very interesting. And helpful. I'm continually impressed at your dedication to whatever the current art focus is.
I am really enjoying your series of exploratory videos - this one, the mixed media one, the one where you learn to draw, etc. Your enthusiasm for exploring different mediums and techniques is inspiring. I am looking forward to your comparison of alcohol and water based markers. I hope you do a video like this using paint markers like POSCA.
This video is pure GOLD. Omg I so amazed at all these possibilities with alcohol markers!
Beyond the content itself, which is always great, I'm always amazed by your storytelling talents. I always leave from your videos feeling like I learnt something new and at the same time they are entertaining and visually stunning.
Wow, thank you!
so far one of my favourite videos...might be because I've found interest in alcohol markers and I love your way of exploration. Any chance you could do video on paper recommendations both that are on the expensive side and cheaper?... This is what I'm currently trying to find.
can't wait for your next marker video 🤩
Your deep dives are absolutely amazing-3 Feel super inspired right now=3 Thank you all for your hard work=3Katrina is so talented=3
Thankyou 🥰💜
Yesterday i had my marker collection sprawled out and felt like a tiny marker bazaar. Looking at this im like 😮😍😍😍 i got NOTHIN’ 😂😂❤ love your videos
Good timing on the video for me :) I just started using alcohol markers for the first time, I can't wait to start trying some of these techniques.
This was amazing Sarah. Can’t wait to see your winners for each type of markers 🤩
Wonderful video Kat! Thankyou. It's very useful
This was such a fantastic video!!! I learned a lot. I have a few different alcohol marker brands, water based markers and watercolor markers so this was eye opening for sure. I don’t have Copics bc they are just too dang expensive. I can’t wait for your next vid!!!! 💜💜
I discovered the waterbased blending technique around the same as this video was uploaded😅
I discovered it accidentally, but it was really helpful
I would love a follow up video detailing the tips and process you learned from Kat. I got the sense that you learned a lot but I don’t really feel like I did if that makes sense.
my main issue with alcohol markers, especially Copic, is they aren't lightfast. I do know some artists who love them, like Karen Campbell and I've bought so many over the years, but don't really use them. I need to go ahead and practice with this medium, because the markers are SO vibrant! I think this would be great for me to work out my mixed media paintings before I put paint to canvas! Thanks for this video really great ideas and techniques.
LOVE THIS VIDEO !!! Thank you so much for this video, very informative and absolutely grateful I learned so much. :) your final portrait came out so beautiful. Thanks you for introducing me to Kate.
Thank soooo much Sarah for this educational video. I’ve learned so much from it and it also inspired me to get my watercolour markers out and have a big play with them. I used markers like you did… but a whole new sky of possibilities has opened up. Thanks again. 🫶🏻
I am super excited to see the next video. However, this video was VERY informative. At the end of the day, enjoy yourself and appreciate the memories you create 😀
WOW! awesome artwork! (yours and Kat's). Amazing!❣❣❣
Great video and tips! I have several brands of both alcohol and water-based markers. I need to do some more artwork with them (as well as all the other many art supplies I’ve acquired in the last few years). Maybe I’ll try my hand at that portrait you made (yours will of course look better as I’m not good with realism). I haven’t tried putting down a purple base before; I’ve mostly done skin with just various skin tone shades.
Great video.. and your finished pieces are so so good !! I laughed at the connector pens, it's hard not to play with those when they are infront of you!! ❤
This was an awesome video. By the end of the year Sarah will need more boxes and storage
I would love to try this, but I still struggle with drawing realistic and knowing exactly where to shade. 🤦🏻♀️
