If it sounded like this I'm very sorry - but this war is exceedingly paranoia-causing to me because there have been incidents already where EU member states took cross-border hits from accidental munitions gone astray... and those are also NATO members... should this escalate at some point into the neighbouring states it's going to an "Article 5" or "casus foederis" which would put NATO on war footing with Russia... The reason I've not listed them was, well a) so as not to complicate things further in elaborating my "whys" and b) (here's the "why") because none of "The Powers" (meaning not only the superpowers but also players like the EU) where directly involved. Yes, I'm aware that it carried old historical patterns like Serbia being Russia's preferred player or Croatia gathering unofficial support by it's K.u.K. connections) but still the involvement of the Powers was never to the degree of openness in a classical proxy war as it's now. And I'm aware of the fact that there was *completely* unofficial "input", or just "opinions" by German and (especially)Austrian Staff Officers into things like Operations Flash and Storm by the Croatian Forces in '95. Still, the current conflict is much closer to the "American War" in Vietnam than to Afghanistan in '79 exempli gratia. I'm still thankful that you brought it up. The U.S. covertly armed them so that they had a chance against the common enemy and the Afghans eventually won, forcing the Soviets to retreat and abandon the invasion. My opinion is that, that was the beginning of the fall of the Soviet Union and we have the Holy Warriors of Afghanistan to thank for it. They were the only ones to stand up to them. Eventually those same Holy Warriors, armed and supported by the U.S. became the scapegoats of 9/11, so Bush could lash out at someone.
