I do love a good Boeing 777 spool-up! Pity that Air NZ's seat doesn't match the high quality service and food/drink. Thankfully I *think* they're putting a new seat into the 787-10s.
When we went to NZ in 2018, my husband and I did have breakfast together using the buddy seat. It's a delightful idea and several other people on the flight also decided to do the same. I will say, of all the airlines I've flown, Air New Zealand hands down is my absolute favorite and we can't wait until we're all able to travel safely again to have another visit to the wonderful land of even more wonderful people. Kia Ora!
I’ve flown ANZ business class a lot and those seats become a fabulous flat bed. Their USP is that your head is away from the aisle. Given that Air Kiwi’s long hauls mainly left (!) in the evening who cares about not facing the window. Give me a decent bed, good service and a great meal and I’ll crane my neck to look out the window. Oh and the champagne in the beer glass is very stable when it gets bouncy. Look forward to getting back in the air one day. I’m also intrigued about what Air New Zealand’s new business class will look like.
Kia Ora from Auckland. Hope you enjoyed your time here. You are right in that only New Zealand citizens can enter NZ right now. I’m a patriotic supporter of Air NZ however have always been unhappy with the BC seating. Flew business class once and couldn’t stand the sight of people’s feet hanging out. The symbol is known as the KORU, a native NZ plant in our forests. Kia Kaha everyone.
I flew Air New Zealand from San Francisco to Australia seven years ago. I enjoyed a fabulous flight and excellent service on a 747. (I miss those wonderful passenger jets)! Air New Zealand gets 5 stars from me. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 I hope to fly that airline again, soon. Thanks for the review, Paul. 🌼
Great to see you again 💗 I'd like to visit New Zealand, but since we here in the US cannot get our act together on COVID-19, it is likely not a trip made soon.
I flew in a Air New Zealand Boeing 777 last November of 2019 flying from Los Angeles International Airport KLAX to Auckland International Airport AKL/NZAA and it's a nice ride.
I think it’s on purpose, he said the scenery looks similar to England and repeats it. Kinda giving a deja by effect (I’ve seen this before I’ve heard this before)
I had to chuckle when Paul said he wasn’t sure how many people decided to use the buddy seat facility when a few minutes later there is someone in front doing exactly that.
A very good trip report, Paul. I flew Premium Economy from BNE to AKL several years ago and it was truly wonderful. That was on the 777-300ER, which is an experience all on its own ! Thanks for sharing.
Great video, as always!👏💪 The seat, however, can only be described as a "herringbone" configuration that takes you away as possible from the window on a window seat while providing plenty of view on the other passenger's feet, instead!!!😜
This caught me by surprise only in the last year or so more reviews from around the world have given a small country a go. Hi paul, great video and looking at your many videos it looks like you've had an amazing experience in the southern hemisphere. Air new Zealand also have the sky beds in economy witch i believe is original to them.
Interesting video, I last used Air NZ economy in February 2019. I've made about a dozen trips to New Zealand from the UK. The first from LGW even though I lived about 8 miles from LHR. That flight was with Continental in 1991. DC10 to Denver 747 Denver to Honolulu 747 to AKL. On the way back 747 to LAX 747 to Newark DC10 to LGW, all economy. Since that flight all trips from LHR, which is now about 3 miles from home. One trip LHR to Tokyo (NRT) with JAL then Air NZ 767 to AKL via Nadi (NAN) and AKL to NRT in the other direction including an upgrade to Business on JAL to LHR. Have used Singapore economy A380 to Changi (SIN) then 777 to AKL and the same in reverse. Have used Virgin to SFO the Air NZ to AKL and the same back all economy. Virgin economy was great and at the time you got an amenity kit even in economy, I don't think they do that anymore. The rest have been Air NZ all the way LHR to AKL via LAX in economy in 747s and recently 777s, last trip Jan-Feb 2019. Have always loved the Air NZ product in economy and usually were able to select the paired window and aisle seats at the back of the 777 aircraft. (A bit more roomy for a couple of fatties). It's a shame that Air NZ chose to stop a direct service to LHR. Now planning our next trip to NZ as the border has re-opened and as we've missed 2 trips due to COVID we have saved enough to go Business class and buying through Air NZ or cheap flight web sites it looks like Air NZ have an arrangement with Virgin via SFO or LAX. Last time we went via SFO it seamed more relaxed than LAX. Looking forward to sampling Virgin and Air NZ Business Class.
Posters are from 1950s, when TEAL (Became Air New Zealand in 1965) started the "Coral Route" which was Fiji, Tonga, New Zealand.Iconic stuff, TEAL started in 1940 and was known as Tasman Empire Airways limited based out of Mechanics Bay in Auckland. They used Flying boats until the Mid 1950s.
The airport at Fiji was once called Naval Air Station Nandi during WW2. It was constructed by USN “Seabees” in 1942 as a forward airfield to cover the Solomon Slot from Guadalcanal up to Truk. It was my Father’s home for a number of months as he was a pilot with the VS-67 squadron of the US Navy.
Paul did you ever take that business flight on Oman Air back in December and when will you upload it? Keep them coming Paul, always look forward to your reports.
I tried to message you on insta but you have messages from randoms blocked (fair enough haha). Found your channel a week ago bro, and have binge watched the lot every night this week. thanks heaps and keep it up. Planning some future travel around the Deer Stalker and/or the Artic Sleeper with my father in law. Awesome. Thank you!
I flew this configuration on ANZ in February 2019 and, like you, found the herringbone pattern a bit weird. With the way the seat walls curve, it felt really tight and not spacious at all. There's also a fixed arm rest that gets really awkward and uncomfortable when the seat is made into a bed. The beds are well enough and had just enough room for me to stretch fully (I'm 6 ft tall) but again, with the curved configuration, there isn't much room to spread out, especially if you're tall. The food was excellent and the service was supreme on my flight from SFO to AUK. Like you, I was greeted with a glass of bubbly which was very welcome because I had very nearly missed the flight due to freak snowfall in Seattle that caused my original flight from SEA to be cancelled and rerouted. We literally ran from one gate to another in SFO and got there as they were paging us in final call. Fortunately, I had started texting ANZ when we landed so they knew we were coming and held the plane a couple of minutes for us and another group from Seattle who were also very late. Try finding a US based airline that would do that! A word of caution about sleeping on this flight; they keep the nose of the plane slightly elevated nearly the entire time so with the configuration of seats and the inability to raise the head of the bed a bit, you'll feel like you're lying with your feet tilted up, which made me feel like my head was pressurized. It made sleeping interesting. Still, overall, I felt they did a decent job although it could've been better, especially if the seat configuration and shape wasn't so tight and curved. Being so slanted, it felt weird and a bit disorienting to take off and land sideways to the direction of travel.
We had a similar situation at SFO in 2018 but coming from Auckland then running to catch a flight to New York, after fog had set in and we had to circle for an hour or so. Fortunately for us, when you leave NZ, business class travellers get checked on their connecting flight in Auckland. As it was a couple of days before Christmas and they were loading standby passengers by the time we got to the gate, we would surely have lost out seat had this not been the case.
Excellent video as per usual. It's been a long time since I was in NAN. It was in 1975 on my first solo international flight from SYD to NAN to HNL on a QF 747-200. Good to see what it's like now.
Love the video Paul although I’m sad to see an Air New Zealand 🇳🇿Boeing 777-200 review since ANZ have gone to an all Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet! The 787 is a fine aircraft but I would’ve loved to fly their 777-200’s… sad. 😔👍😎😩✈️
Great vlog as always! What a strange glass to serve Champagne in. Looks more like a beer glass to me. Talk about a cabin refit. I have heard that why almost all the A-380 have been but in storage is not only because of the Covid, but also the price of a cabin refit to the price of $500 mill. Pr aircraft! Holy crap!
Up until now I’ve avoided Air New Zealand Business Class strictly because of the seat/cabin design. When they correct their MISTAKE, I’ll be happy to travel with them.
Between the time they were ordered and delivery date, the seats had a bad rap. This translates to bad reviews for every airline that had this seat configuration. Having flown twice on this aircraft (both long haul) I found them to be great whether you are flying alone or with a companion. Air NZ is great and if you are worried about your seat, try riding on the wing.
Great review as always Paul and thank heavens they are getting rid of that awful business class design...what on earth were they thinking ? Thanks again mate...really appreciate it !!
My grandparents flew from Wellington Wellington NZ to Sydney Australia on TEAL by ying boat. Then onto the UK on BOAC. It took 12 days in both directions.
The Isle of Man airport has a narrow gauge railway right outside the airport and an actual station so you could use it to get to the airport from Douglas and other Manx towns
Very interesting Paul! I havent flown or filmed a flight video in many months so I'm just watching some trip reports to get my cravings of aviation down haha! until I get back to flying!
Man the last time I was in Fiji was in the winter of 2008 back when Air Pacific was flying. I got to fly onboard their 747-400s which was quite the experience especially for an 8 year old. Things have really changed at that airport since the last time I was there. I also got to fly to Auckland onboard one of Air Pacific’s 737s. You have some amazing content and I’m looking forward to seeing more :)
I’ve flown ANZ a few times from U.K., which we can sadly do no more! I love the airline. Prem economy was excellent. Can’t afford business yet but hope to one day!
Nicely done. Ahh the good ol days of international travel ! AirNZ have horrible over priced business class where you only see the feet of other passengers. Gave up on AirNZ a couple of years ago, long haul done by Emirates or Cathay - much better service, cheaper and a better seat. They’ve got a lot of catching up to do in the future when we can fly again.
Always take the champagne if they offer it to you :) Who are these people who refuse a free refill?? Also love how much you appreciate the feat of aviation. Too many people have become too complacent about it! Every time I fly I think about how amazing it is.
Well presented...thankyou.👌I like how you made clear you heading south to Auckland...shows that you are geographically aware...haha. Just to add...pre-covid Air NZ during the peak season of June to September they were operating 5 flights a day into Nadi from Auckland , Christchurch and Wellington. Nadi was the second busiest port internationally after Sydney on their network. Sadly thats all disappeared along with several thousand staff at Air NZ...not to mention most of Fiji's resort workers....sad times indeed.
Thanks for filming and sharing. I'm a railroad buff. Do they still run trains on the tracks in Fuji? Probably can find on internet but I just thought I'd ask since I know you're also a train fan.

That seating arrangement would drive me nuts. I’d ask sit in an economy in a real window seat. LOL . That would be for me.
And there is no privacy of any kind with the seat across for you basically faces you. Albeit on an angle
