AirNZ's controversial herringbone configuration in business class has the disadvantage of everyone's unsightly feet being exposed. However, it has the advantage of having enough space and room to lie down that everyone's unsightly feet are exposed. Even though I personally wouldn't mind it, it's the most recurring criticism I've seen of AirNZ business class so I'm glad that the configuration is finally coming to an end.
I really liked the food but I have to admit after my AirNZ Business Class flight I decided I'd prefer their Premium Economy. With P. Economy I can get the Priority Bag drop, Security, and boarding With Dragon Pass I can get Lounge access in Strata, and in my opinion the layout of the P. Economy with lots of room and great views out the window make it overall better.
Completely agree Cliff, the service, food and beverage is exceptional but I'm 6'3" and just couldn't get comfortable in that bed ... my feet didn't fit the ottoman .... P economy ..you get there same socks and the seat is better to sleep in.
We were ‘upgraded’ to business recently on a flight from Rarotonga. It was horrible, economy is better. Everyone is facing inwards looking at each others feet, no one gets to see out the window, I had someone’s toenails poking into my leg, there is no privacy, on takeoff and landing the forces on the body are diagonal so it feels unnatural.

Thanks for the review. I was considering this same route to AKL. But this layout is similar to Virgin Alantic Upper Class. Not too happy with the lack of privacy. Was the internet issue due to you or more of Air New Zealand?

I recently travelled from Sydney to Auckland to Vancouver on Air New Zealand’s business class. The first flight was on a 777 and the second on a 787. I hated these seats! They are too narrow, there is very little storage space and no privacy. And you cannot just switch to recumbent at will; you have to call the flight attendant. In fairness, the service was excellent. I chose ANZ because it was half the price of Air Canada and now I know why.

AIR NZ Business Class is by far the worst layout of any BC globally. Stupid footrest location in the aisle, feet constantly get tapped by trolleys and people walking past. Not facing the view, instead watching stupid people trying to jam oversized carry on into overheads. No storage for anything and even the tiniest pullout shelf, just large enough for the base of a small glass, has to be put away for takeoff/landing. No privacy at all. Just woeful. Fly Perth-Auckland regularly and I now avoid the direct 7hr ANZ flight and take Qantas with a layover in Sydney deliberately to avoid this shit product. If doing a "redeye" I'd rather the QF A330-737, Sydney First lounge and 15hrs. Do yourself a favour. Avoid ANZ.
Have flown others…? I’d assert that while ANZ crew are usually amazing.., the hard product doesn’t stand up for what you’re paying.., esp comparing entire package… lounge etc.. There’s a lot that works about herring bone, and a little that doesn’t

After the Mount Erebus disaster and the way Air NewZealand id EVERYTHING they could to try to cover up their complicity in the disaster and obfuscate the investigation into the crash, I will never trust A.N. again. May be they have learned, maybe they are still like Boeing is now, today. I don't know. But as there are other airlines that fly to and from New Zealand, one has a choice, so I choose to fly with ANYONE else!
It Is the Worst Business class ! Its old and grubby ! The new business class that Air NZ is rolling out soon just seems to be taking forever !!! They really need to catch up to the other Airlines products that are bench mark in this category. Oh and the insulting thing is that Air NZ is one of the most expensive $$$!!! Look at the costs of international flights to USA !!! Even business class to Australia return from Auckland is often over $2000. Compare !!! If travelling with friend or partner your better off in premium economy with normal seating arrangement and with all the same meals and frills as business class... You can also look out the window without breaking your neck,,, And a lot bit cheaper. However, I feel the food is average if Im honest....Almost microwave tv meals, And a couple of slices of cheese with Huntley Palmers crackers... hardly premium in comparison to other airlines...And the annoying thing about that is the three choices you do have is the same on nearly all their other flights. So a bit ground hog day... Ive travelled many many times (monthly, often twice monthly) in business class on Air NZ out of Auckland and also other airlines such as Qatar. Emirates, Qantas... I just hope Air NZ premium classes rise to a higher standard when they update to the new cabins soon... no doubt the prices will also rise !!! Lets see...
