Woman Arrested for her First Time After Stealing from Hoboken ShopRite

- Around 2:49 PM on May 4, 2024, Officers Geovanni Cruzado and Tyrone Huggins with the Hoboken Police Department responded to a report of a shoplifting at ShopRite on 900 Madison Street. They entered the store around 2:57 PM and walked upstairs to the loss prevention office. In the loss prevention office, they met with the loss prevention officer as well as the alleged shoplifter, who was identified as 33-year-old Arielle.
The loss prevention officer informed the officers that he saw the woman enter the store shortly after 1:00 PM and start placing items in her cart. At the self-checkout aisle, Arielle did pay for $156.84 worth of items using a card, while attempting to leave without paying for an additional $248.64 worth of items.
The officers were provided with an itemized receipt of the value of the items she had allegedly attempted to steal. Based on the value of the items she had stolen, the store decided to press charges against her. Officer Huggins placed Arielle under arrest for shoplifting. She was handcuffed and escorted to the patrol car.
Arielle was transported to the Hoboken Police Department for further processing. At police HQ, she was searched in more detail by Officer Rose Kanan. Arielle was finger printed and photographed by Officer Huggins. She was charged with shoplifting under 2C:20-11B(2) and released pending her court appearance.

The summary of events was based on records that are “open to public view through open access to public records” as defined in the Salzano case. In Ramos v. Flowers, 429 N.J. Super. 13, the Appellate Division of the Superior Court has also affirmed the right to film law enforcement interactions.

First of all, people stole before self checkout and would continue to if it wasn’t there. All the self checkout does is place a magnifying glass on the problem allowing them to be identified easier. Second, that cops remark really makes me mad because it boils down to victim blaming and by removing the self checkout, it only punishes us that don’t steal and the business that’s saving money on labor. He only makes that remark because it causes more work for the PD. Oh well, we pay them to hold criminals accountable and his remarks only shows that he doesn’t care about that. He just wants to enforce the laws he wants to enforce (probably none at all)
Hoboken is not "the hood" there is literally no part of this town thats a hood. This town is one of the most expensive places to live in America.

I hate self checkout! Nearly every time I have tried to use it, I have had issues (not issues I caused) and have had to ask for assistance! Just get rid of it! These officers were very kind, gentle and professional in dealing with this lady! Thank you officers for your service!

As I said in reply to another comment. Theft happened before self checkout and would continue if it ever left. All the self checkout does is place a magnifying glass on the problem and allow easier detection. I prefer self checkout and I don’t steal. I can check myself out much quicker than an employee can and there’s rarely a line there as opposed to the traditional checkout. Yes corporations are greedy but in this case their greed is a win for both of us.

Officer Tyrone Huggins looks to be NFL linebacker size. No trouble enforcing street law. After watching the video, he's also intelligent, friendly, and courteous. Good hire for Hoboken.

The reason why self check out doesn't work is because the cashier doesn't watch the customers checking out. They are trying to eliminate cashiers altogether. They don't want to pay for cashiers. The fewer cashiers, the more money they keep for the executive.

When you're arrested for shoplifting in any store I think the police should walk you around the whole entire store and I would say shoplifting would go down substantially!!!

i wouldnt refund a thing to these crooks. i know they cant take their purchases to jail, but the store cant resell handled food either. they like stealing from others, so its only right they have their things taken. this shoprite needs to move to a better neighborhood , wherever this one is must be a dump, because they catch tons of thieves

The cop saying the self checkout has to go, it just seems to only be at Shop rite and Walmart. You don't see videos posted of self checkout shoplifting from Whole Foods. We pay for out sh*t and we leave, it's crazy. Self check out is amazing, I do it when I'm running in to get a couple of items. However, I love curbside. At the beginning of every month, right after paying rent, I do curbside at BJ's, Target, Whole Foods, and two other local grocery stores. Then as I need smaller items, I pop in to grab them.
They never accept the perp's offers to pay for the stolen merchandise, because there's no crime if they allow them to pay. Also, there's more money in fines (for the store as well as the city in which they were busted).

I got caught shoplifting from a Walmart last year in Chicago and the loss prevention let me go after 45 minutes because the police never showed up.
