Serial Shoplifter Finally Arrested After her SEVENTH TIME at ShopRite in Byram, NJ

- Around 4:53 PM on August 19, 2023, Sergeant Guy Mariani with the Byram Township Police Department responded to a report of a shoplifting at ShopRite on 90 Route 206. He entered the store around 4:56 PM met with store personnel as well as the alleged shoplifter they had detained. The alleged shoplifter was identified as Valerie, and store personnel informed Sergeant Mariani that she attempted to leave the store with $94 worth of unpaid items. According to their surveillance footage, they alleged that Valerie had also shoplifted from the same ShopRite on multiple other occasions.
Patrolman Joseph Ruggieri arrived on scene to assist around 5:00 PM, and he walked upstairs to the loss prevention office so that he could review the surveillance footage. After it was determined that she attempted to leave the store without paying for the items, the officers informed Valerie that she was under arrest. Valerie was escorted outside the store, handcuffed, and placed in the patrol car.
Patrolman Ruggieri transported Valerie to the Byram Township Police Department for further processing. At the station, it was discovered that she had multiple prior arrests for shoplifting, including 1 in Jersey City and 2 in Byram Township. She had apparently been arrested another time for trespassing after she had been banned from that location.
Once Valerie was secured to the bench, Patrolman Ruggieri reviewed the USB drive containing footage from 6 other shoplifting incidents at the same ShopRite on 7/29/2023, 7/31/2023, 8/5/2023, 8/9/2023, 8/14/2023, and 8/16/2023. Valerie was charged with shoplifting under 2C:20-11B(1) and issued 7 summonses.
As he was completing the summonses, Sergeant Mariani fingerprinted Valerie. Valerie was advised that she was banned from entering the ShopRite, and she could be charged with trespassing if she entered the store again. After they finished processing her, Valerie was released pending her court date on September 13, 2023 in the Andover Joint Municipal Court. Patrolman Derek Kuncken drove her back home following her release.
Court records indicate that on November 20, 2023, Valerie pleaded guilty to the summons that was issued on August 19, 2023 and she was sentenced to 10 days in jail, 15 days of community service, and 1 year of probation. She was fined a total of $458 for that charge. She also pleaded guilty to the summons for another incident from July 31, 2023, and she was sentenced to 90 days in jail, 20 days of community service, and 1 year of probation (concurrent). She was fined a total of $795.36 for that charge. The other 5 summonses were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

Six times should get you in handcuffs and walked around the entire store. Take the grand walk of shame you thief. She is partly to blame for the rising costs of everything.
I agree with you whole heartedly! Plus a picture of her at the front door for all to see
She needs some silver bracelets!!

I'm raising two teenage grandkids on social security. This pisses me off!
She doesn't seem to be at all fazed, walk of shame wouldn't embarrass her at all. Someone said her husband rides around in a sports car. Maybe she's a New Jersey Socialite!
Here's a novel idea. Arrest & prosecute the FIRST time, there wouldn't be a SEVENTH time!!!!!
Not true by the numbers. Also, they will often allow them to steal enough that it becomes a more severe crime and they suffer serious consequences. In other words it might have been intentional.
They file her because for the amount have a solid case. Its now a felony, not a mismenor. I think.
The court system is already backlogged. Imagine being a judge and having that many petty crime cases back to back. That’s why stores wait and collect evidence until the thefts become a felony amount to report it to the authorities. That way, the charge will actually stick and do some serious damage.
gotta let them steal enough its a charge that sticks
Amen
She should have been handcuffed in the store! Thief!
The staff allowed her to do this with 6 prior thefts on video?

Everyone wants cops to be nice, but when they are, people bitch. !
See what happens when you don't create a scene or start screaming daddy or it's cause my skin color. She knows she got caught and was not arguing or anything. This is what usually happens when good people do bad things like this. They did the crime, they do the time. This new generation would have put up a fight and argued and cursed out every single person there so they would end up resisting and on the floor as they should but this lady admitted it and did what they said. Nothing wrong with that.
That’s privilege, a serial shoplifter does not get handcuffed so she’s not embarrassed WTF😂
It’s almost as though she’s been *white* her entire life.
It seems to shock lots of *white women* especially.
It was because of her age. Had she been in her 20's she would have likely been cuffed in front of everyone. She was not running her mouth like this new generation of entitled privileged POC. She knows she F'd up.
Ridiculous!!! smdh
Piss off
Exactly anybody else in the videos would’ve been handcuffed in the room.. and had their phone and wallet taken away..
They should post her picture at the front entrance.
great idea since when caught they allows seem to forget they have been trespassed
did she even get trespass from the store? Yes put her picture on the door.
Ex-employee of this particular family of Shoprites here.
Since she’s been banned, every single of the stores that this particular owner runs has her picture in both the security room, and at the Courtesy desk, so if she is spotted, she WILL be followed by AP or management and stopped.
That's the way we would handle it back in the 80's put their picture on the board by the door. Shame was a great deterrent. We also had a list of people who wrote bad checks on the side of the register for everyone to read as you were waiting in line by the register, most honest people would settle up fast to have their name removed.
Absolutely agree😊
It amazes me how criminals never want to be handcuffed. You've been stealing for months, and now you're shocked because you're getting treated like the criminal you are. Unbelievable
Or how thieves think saying, "I don't have anything in my pockets!" means they don't need to be searched. As if they're going to take the word of a thief, AND a liar.
@@jimmyjones6298 Right!
really? it amazes you that someone doesnt want to be put in handcuffs? Even if they did a crime a person does not WANT to be put in handcuffs. Thinking logic needs some work.
I was laughing at how much of an attitude this cop had with the thief compared to the video I watched before this, where an Oklahoma Highway Patrol Officer arrested an Oklahoma Police Chief for getting in a DUI accident. He was as nice as could be and let him sit in the passenger seat with his hands in front of him so he could make phone call after phone call. It was infuriating.
@hangingchad_ I saw that one, too! Lol
She's a serial shoplifter so they decide to not handcuff her as she walks out of the store??? That's why she's not learning anything. Shes not experiencing the walk of shame. They aren't even treating her like a thief.

I don't care if its only worth $5 just to the right thing and press charges. Vote for the judges and DAs who care and will prosecute
it costs them a lot more to go to court and prosecute even for 1000 dollars it ain’t worth it they waste money in court more
Even if they prosecute and take them to court for only $5.00, how do you think they will re-coop the court costs.....raise prices
@elizabeththomas6571 Becouse it's hundreds of thousands of dollars a year that these people are stealing, and their doing it because the stores are NOT prosecuting them. They will spend less money prosecuting and send a stronger message to shoplifters, DONT STEAL FROM HERE, WE WILL PROSECUTE YOU.
It would be worth it if each store hired one person to do the paperwork and go to court to prosecute. That's how it started in hiring the undercover security in store. I used to be a manager a couple decades ago so I know how it works. Maybe I should suggest this and get the job now that I'm a senior and need more income. Just a thought and suggestion.

agreed, hope this young cop does not die because he let his guard down.
I agree with you that she should have been handcuffed, but your comment about women doesn't add up. Statistics prove that 90% of all violent crimes are committed by men. Therefore, most dangerous people are men, not women. There are for sure dangerous women, but 9 times out of 10 dangerous criminals are men.
When I was 11 I stole a magic the gathering card out of the uncommon box at my local comic store. It was $0.50. I felt like crap after I walked out and came back and put it back. The clerk told me I wasn't very slick(I was a nervous 11 year old) but he appreciated that I came back. Said the card wasn't rare or worth the hassle. He wasn't mean or angry though. I'm 35 now and I still hate remembering that feeling of fear and embarrassment. Can't imagine stealing hundreds and even thousands of dollars worth of stuff and not caring.
I stole a bag of M&M’s. I was marched right back to the store and made to confess and pay for them.
Mine was in the early 80s. I was five and I stole a wind up pink mouse holding cheese. My mom marched me back, made me apologize and give it back. The shop worker was kind but gave me a gentle scolding. I don’t think I could have tried to disappear out of existence more. That fixed it right up lol
I was about the same age and stole a single wrapped brownie. Thought I’d gotten away with it and when I walked home (a block away) the store was in the phone with my parents. I had to walk back up the street, return it and apologize
I didn't even steal, I was grocery shopping & had a case of pop on the bottom of the cart. I told the cashier three times that it was there. I got home and found it wasn't on the receipt. At that point I thought oh well, not my problem. It haunted me and haunted me and haunted me for so long, I finally went back and told them and paid for it and the worst part about it all is it wasn't on sale when I finally paid for it, lol.
Another time I got out to the car and realized that I had a nail polish underneath my purse & went back in with it. Even though I was not to blame the first time & it was not deliberate the second time, I still felt the shame.

Because you have to actually get busted to get hit with that . They had her picture but not name info etc. didn't you hear cop saying were giving her 6 different shoplifting summons.
@@ryancarlson8959 I missed that, TY,
I hate the race card but this sure stinks of PRIVILEGE.
I think you’re right
The truth is the truth with any race
I think it’s best you watch some videos on behaviours of various people caught stealing and you’ll probably change your mind.
@greyline1012 Hell, I'll be calm on my 7th time, too. Anyone would.
Yes it freaking does what the hell🤬🤬🤬🤬
They let her keep her jewelry and sunglasses? Never seen that before.
Nice to see store manager officers, organized and kind❤.
No handcuffs?...Why don't you get her lunch while you're at it....
At least it’s not the Hoboken ShopRite 😅
Hoboken ShopRite needs its own show lol
She wouldn't have gotten away with doing it that many times at the Hoboken Shoprite.
She wanted to switch it up.
@@Papaaudit 🤣🤣
But, but I don't get to see Felix. 😕 😅 😂
No one else would get away with doing it dozens of times. I wonder what other stores have had to deal with her and knows her.
Beautiful store clean organized, so nice.Manager organized ❤
Shop Rite must be like Walmart. They let you get a running tab then once you hit the limit,WHAM
I thought she said her name is Felony.
It should be but they are calling her Miss Demeanor until further notice.
It's good to see a senior Officer training a young one. Well done.
It’s not well done. She should be treated like everyone else. Detained immediately in Handcuffs, taken to the office…then jail. That was ridiculous.
That manager is sprinting to his office. 😆
He seems like a great guy to work for and very efficient.
@@courtneysands6646 he really does!
She probably didn't want to call her husband because of her multiple shoplifting arrests,he probably is sick of it.
Makes for good love making, though
You need to go to jail for stealing from the store
Not even ashamed. Sad. Makes me sick
Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever seen cops be that accommodating to a thief. No handcuffs? Y’all seeing this shit?
When did it start...???😮
She needs jail time to think about her life choices. Addiction therapy too.
Addiction?
@@HannadayfloShoplifting can be addictive to some people, just like shopping can be addictive.
It is bad enough she shoplifted but to go back to the same store to steal over and over really does not make sense.
Don’t even handcuff her until she gets out, and tells her they’re not going to handcuff her until she goes outside, wow! What kind of people are they gold made, unbelievable!😮
They always want to make sure they have all their stuff though....you know, so no one steals it.
What a surplus of special treatment she got. No cuffs, no hands holding arms, tissues for baby tears, offer of help to exit patrol car. Is this the privilege of a serial shoplifter?
Shaming people when they persistently do bad things sometimes helps.
If you’ve been busted for shoplifting 7 times, you’re either a horrible shoplifter, have the worst luck ever, or have shoplifted thousands of times and only been caught 7 times. Probably the latter.
$94? She should move to California where you can do $950 and get away with it.
She needs to go to jail for long time and pay a big fine. She is sickening
WTH!!! She searched herself and gave up what was in her pockets instead of them searching her. These Keystone cops acted like rookies, big fail and then they allowed this old thief the courtesy of not being handcuffed in the store and offering her a tissue 🙄 wow unbelievable
I like seeing the senior officers training the newer officers in these cam videos. Great work officers!
She's so nonchalant about the whole thing, she'll be back at it by the next day.
Drive her HOME?! Are you fing kidding me?! What is there some kind of history with these people? She’s a damn thief! I would’ve said.. uhh,🙄 “If your husband won’t pick you up, then you’ll have to sit in jail then!” You STOLE SO many times woman! I digress.
