Phil Collins was the only artist to perform live in both Live Aid concerts (London and Philadelphia) both held on the same day. As soon as he was done in London they put him on the Concorde to fly to Philadelphia.
Legend 👍🏻
I remember that
He was in the air that night (😉)
@@rogerstarkey5390 Touche'. ;)
@@rogerstarkey5390 😆😆
Bowie was meant to do the first line but was touring and couldn’t. But Paul Young has a wonderful voice and i’m happy he was chosen to replace DB.
Ta that's what I usually say when someone reacts to this
Someone can correct me - I was in junior high at the time and was just in love with George Michael. But, wasn't Queen also on tour when this was recorded, which is why they weren't there? That's what I remember. If I remember correctly, they really wanted to be a part of it, but were on the other side of the world.
@@mcm0324i don't know what age junior high is.i was 12, 2nd year of secondary school(11-16) i have written a variation of this in other reactors comments.you are right when bob geldof decided he had to do something to help (he got midge ure to write the song with him) he understood there was no time to wait to get the big artists, production company to get money behind it,branding, the right studio, lay on a luxury buffet.people were dying now so he got people who were in the country at the time.i imagine it was probably like a phone tree phone someone and their like ill phone etc.they went to a studio that was avaliable sent people out for fish and chips and the local snack bar and recoreded it so he could start getting aid to ethiopia asap then he would do something more substantial later so the big stars who were on tour at the time like queen who really wanted to be there would have a chance to contribute hence live aid the next year.david bowie was booked to do the opening lines but couldn't make it so paul young(my first crush lol) who already had lines was asked.so david wanted to be there too.
*This is THE Gen X Christmas song! Moves me every time I hear it, because it brings back a certain time in history that was unforgettable. This might be my favorite Christmas song of all. (as an aside... the fact that you have not started digging into Culture Club is heresy! Boy George does not sound like a woman... he had one of the most legendary smooth R&B voices, in a pop band with ska influences. They were bloody brilliant!*
Amen!. 👏 👏
The 80's were such a great time to be alive. I remember I wished I had been born in the 50's, and later on I realized how lucky I was to be young in the 80's. What a magic time it was!
Amen!
It always makes me tear up. I was in high school. I loved the song so much, my dad bought 100 copies of the 45 and I gave them with all my Christmas cards.
Bob Geldof is a legend. He was the lead singer of the Boomtown Rats who have created the all time classic "I don't like Mondays". From his solo stuff I like "This is the world calling" most.
He was also the protagonist in The Wall...
@@silversun1203 I'm afraid I find him rather obnoxious
@@euronick61 Only rather?
Midge Ure, anyone?
@@markrichards636 the unsung hero of Band Aid ...
Bob Geldof seems to get all the glory but people often forget about Midge Ure playing just as big a part.
Bob Geldof the lead singer of the Boomtown Rats is mainly known as the organizer of the Live Aid concert in 1985 to raise money for the famine in Africa.
And Midge Ure
@@markrichards636 ...yes Midge Ure did a hell of a lot of work on Band Aid and Live Aid, Bob Geldof was just the Gob!!! 😂
SO EMOTIONAL. I WAS 18 AT TIME OF RELEASE. STILL TO THIS DAY I'M IN LOVE WITH THIS TRACK. MERRY XMAS TO ALL 🌨☃️❄
I was 14..... I remember it so well!
Paul Young, Boy George, George Michael, Simon Le Bon, Sting, Tony Hadley, and Bono were the first vocalists, in that order! This was the first charity supergroup of the eighties! It inspired USA for Africa, Farm Aid, and many more! All proceeds went to assist in famine relief! The Live Aid concert was also organized by many of the same people who organized this group!! Fun fact: There were two American acts there: Jody Watley and Kool and the Gang! ❤️❤️
George Harrison concert for Bangladesh inspired all the above , notice you didn't mention that
@@shootemupshootemdown thanks, I appreciate the input.
I believe Sammy Hagar was also in there American

Dereck, did you mention Paul Young? The singer right at the start? You should check out some of his songs: Love of the Common People, Everytime You Go Away, Wherever I lay my Hat... classic 80ties
111% agree! Paul Young’s voice is phenomenal.
Definitely I agree with the two of you, de definite must!!
paul young also sang "senza una Donna", "love of the common people"
BOY GEORGE VOCALS SLAYING 💯
For me, it wouldn't be the same without Paul Young's opening and middle segment. He was such a great performer with a great voice. No-one ever mentions him either. He doesn't get much credit.
His opening Vocals to this song is pure magic. He set the tone for it.
@@xoxxobob61 I wholeheartedly agree 👍
It's that time of the year where I watch reactors react to this song. I agree, Bob and Midge did a great job arranging the song around Paul's foundation. Young can croon and growl with the best of them, but for this song, he is such a strong "straight man" for all the "flashier" voices in the solos.
💯
Thank you for being one of the few people who’ve reacted to this song who knows the names of most of the performers.
I Always have prefered the song Do they know the Xmas to the american song WE ARE the World .
Do they know the Xmas song reminds me the Live aid concert.
A great musical show. 🎄
The bells still give me goosebumps, all the years later....
Dereck, thanks for reviewing this truly iconic song!
Can you please react to Paul Young's Come Back and Stay? I'm sure you'll like it :)
This is what started live aid,usa for africa etc it has become a Christmas classic, released most Christmas,s
This is music history being made!!
I personally love the extended version because it has the artists wishing Christmas and telling people to donate of what they can. When David Bowie speaks it still heartbreaking to hear him.
Wow! I saw several reactions by Americans to this song and you are the only one that knew almost all artists that were in the video (you didn’t react with Paul Young;). I remember the song being broadcasted on the radio for the first time in the Netherlands. All stations started the song at the same time. I was with my mother in the kitchen, waiting. When it started it gave me goose bumbs and soon after that tears came up. Special times that come back every time I hear the song…
So many of my favorite 80s artists on this video including Simon Le Bon and all the Duran Duran guys, George Michael, and Paul Young at the beginning. This song is what made Live Aid happened.
Simon = one of the most beautiful pop voices ever. His high-pitched notes are so pristine.
When you can watch this, or listen, and can identify every face and voice, you will have a grasp of the most popular (mostly) New Wave English artists of the early 80s. You're almost there! ;) It is Span-dow BTW. The Live Aid concerts were EPIC, and the Queen performance was beyond amazing.
Hello Dereck,Band Aid.All the great musicians of the 80s come together for this song.I love it.The great passion you hear in this song is so great. It makes my heart open. This is my favorite Christmas song!!Thank you Dereck for your reaction!!💝🐬
the BRITISH super groups, the Americans did it a few months later
The line "Well, tonight thank God it's them instead of you" always kills me
Thumb up for Bananarama being spotted by Dereck. They looked great :)
Time for goosebumps.
Lots of great performances, but Boy George is the cherry on top!
Professor of Rock has an interview with Midge, Paul Young and Tony Hadley about this. ua-cam.com/video/v1KanJNn_w4/v-deo.html
Geldorf gets the public credit as the man who dragged them into it , Midge did most of the work on the song.
The Greatest Charity Song of All Time - Period
Ah, at least !!!! Everybody was and is talking about USA for Africa, thinking they were the 1s to do this kind of song but most people have forgotten that Band Aid were the 1st....
This song was produced in 24 hours.
The TV has showed the production live when i was 8 years in 1984. It was a very nice show.
another charity record which was released in 1985 was a group called NORTHERN LIGHTS- TEARS ARE NOT ENOUGH/ this was a group of well known canadian artists .only like gordon lightfoot anne murray. joni mitchell, bryan adams neil young. burton cummings, corey hart geddy lee. mike reno. other chorus members include john candy. eugene levy , paul shaffer, andy kim ,catherine o'hara and many others.written by 6 people including david foster and bryan adams. you should react to this incredible charity project. thanks dereck!
Ok you’re awesome. First time on your channel and you have taste! It’s absolutely “one of the (if not THE) best Christmas songs ever written”. The opening is just spine tingling. And top marks on recognising almost all the singers.
All stars thought they just were there to record....were not aware of the video shoot...Bananarama arrived still drunk ....great support at the times when we thought we could save Africa...still i hope one day we will.....
Mull of Kin - Tyre, you made it sound so exotic, lol. Also check out Ferry Aid - Let It Be which is famous artists again such as Paul McCartney, Kate Bush, Boy George, Kim Wilde, etc.
LOL, you should sell t-shirts that say "I think that is Sting..."
Great reaction! This is still so popular in the UK and you hear it sometimes on American radio. To me it isn’t the Christmas season until I hear this and Wham’s Last Christmas!
Good to see Sadé and Bananarama!
Come to the UK and you will hear this 1000 times during the Christmas season
Bob Geldoff is someone you should take a look at. Bob is an Irish man but received an honorary knighthood from the Queen for the millions he raised for African famine relief, including organising Band Aid & Live Aid. His band The Boom Town Rats song I Don't Like Mondays was written after an elementary school shooting. The name of the song was the shooters response when asked why she did it. A sad story and sign of things to come.
Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure (is pronounced Your) from the band (Ultravox) (you must know their biggest song Vienna?? started all of this.
were soo lucky that Midge Ure { Ultravox } made his Demo first befor sharing it with all musican"s...????? I still remember Winter/christmass 1984 West- Berlin/Germany with Band Aid everywhere every music Radio Stations/Record Stations/Record Shops W.O.M World of Music......??? Great times while in my early teens...
Bob Geldoff and his band Boomtown rats had a hit with 'i don't like mondays' in 1979😊
Dereck,This a great song for a great cause, and lot of reactors have watched this video. But almost no one has reacted to the Canadian version of band aid,Northern lights" tears are not enough." So be the first to react to this hidden gem.🇨🇦💖🇺🇸😷
Shakin Steven's Merry Christmas everyone is the best one :)
Bob Geldof was lead singer of an Irish band called The Boomtown Rats and this whole thing was his brainchild after he watched BBC News reports of the devastating famine sweeping through Ethiopia, Africa. He quickly contacted Midge Ure and they hurriedly wrote this (an original song) which was very important, it meant that every single penny raised went toward famine relief for Ethiopia, had they done a cover they would have had to pay royalties. I think Midge Ure served as senior producer for the track. The supergroup Band Aid was formed and it was all done at supersonic speed, recording it, mixing it, getting the records pressed and into the shops. And this was fall of 1984 and they were desperate to have it chart in time for Christmas (which it did) and the great British public went into overdrive buying it by the truckload, in fact news reports at the time showed people buying multiple copies at a time to the extent that the record company struggled to keep up with the demand. Band Aid was made up of the biggest and best British and Irish acts of that time although did include one American act. Kool & The Gang who I think were in London, recording at the same studio.
So this was fall/Christmas of ‘84 and the success of this spawned USA For Africa’s We Are The World circa March of 1985 I believe.
Bob Geldof then went one gigantic step further in staging the Live Aid concerts in July of ‘85!! 😊
The guy from Spandau ballet his son Ronan is the host of the morning show on Capital breakfast in the UK, he's kind of a celebrity himself in his own right
Agree with everything you have said about the song. I have heard this countless times and still get goosebumps when i hear it. Thank you for your reaction.
Lovely reaction - try Perfect Day, the lou Reed song that the BBC used to advertise their music - it is amazing hearing so many different voices
Brings back lots of memories… ❤️⭐️❤️
I don't know"Last Christmas" by George Michael is on its tail. I love this song so much. Boy George is superb!
Strangely enough Last Christmas by Wham! was released at the same time. It debuted at #2 in the U.K. right behind Do They Know It's Christmas? It was kept out of #1 for 5 consecutive weeks. However, of course George MIchael was part of the top 2 songs for over a month. Everything She Wants was the B side of Last Christmas so technically it was 3 songs at the top of the charts for George during that time period.
BAND AID 1984 SINGERS ORDER:
The performers who sang verses were, in order: Paul Young, Boy George, George Michael, Simon Le Bon, and Bono. The chorus included David Bowie, Phil Collins, Paul McCartney, Geldof, Ure and many other artists who weren’t given a verse but sang the “Feed The World” part and lent their images to the effort by appearing in the promotional photo.
Neither Bowie or McCartney were anywhere on the song as they couldn’t make it….they sent recorded Christmas messages that appeared on the B side.
React to Paul Young (first singer) fantastic voice. This lead up to Live Aid and some classic performances!
I am so impressed you KNEW these names!!! Congrats. Wow
They are also in it, Paul Weller, Glenn Gregory (Heaven 17), Marilyn
Absolutely THE best! So much better than “We Are The World” (yawn) the cheesy and weak attempt to replicate this ORIGINAL masterpiece a year after this masterpiece was released in 1984. From this Band Aid, came Live Aid which I was so lucky to attend in Philadelphia. Classic, haunting, powerful message which stands the test of time.
Wonderful song cannot wait to watch love you
Well done on naming many of the period artists
Bob and Midge it's 8 o'clock in the morning. We've been here 24 hrs and I think it's time we went home.
Listen to the extended version to hear Bowie spoken word.
Paul McCartney, Holly Johnson and Big Country also appear on the b-side vinyl of this called "Feed the World"
Bananarama and Jody Watley were the only women! Two of my favourite artists.
Bananarama were also the only artists to be in Band Aid II, although with a different lineup.
It says that they recorded, CUT, PRESSED and released the record in 48 hours.
Eventually after Bob Geldorf off argued with the prime minister (Margaret thatcher) it was agreed that call taxes from the sales went to the fund. It was the SONG that created Live aid.
There is a joke in the words a bitter sting of tears and sung by Sting from the group Police 😊
Band Aid came about because Bob Geldolf watched a documentary about the worst famine and drought Ethiopia had.
Bob Geldolf and Midge Ure got together British artist to record Do They Know it's Christmas Dec 84.
They then contacted Quincy Jones beginning of 85 where he got together American artists to record We Are The World.
The rest is history Bob and Midget Ure then got together artist in Britain and USA.
to create The Concert
Live Aid July 85.
Queen as usual stole the show.
All proceeds went to the plight of Africa.
I know I had a sore throat and a very sore head
The song that started it all and lead the way to Live Aid, no other charity song matches this one by a long way IMO. I remember singing this as a teen at Wembley Stadium on that hot July evening in 1985 such a wonderful memory and cannot even begin to explain the atmosphere in the stadium what a day & to think this all started with the BBC News report by Michael Buerk showing the harrowing news report public broadcasting at it's finest!
That song was recorded with a cocaine party. They got all artists together, then the band Status Who arrived with plenty of Colombiana. Only after so much blow the singers were fired up to sing
soo cool I just turned 18 in October back than amazing beeing a Teen back than with all this Fashion/Music going on.....
@@andik8570 So true Andi what an era of music the 80s!!!
The song that starter it all 👍💕
Try The Crying Game by George a forgotten song which is wonderful. Happy, happy Christmas to you and your viewers. Keep well, keep safe in these difficult times
it was originally a hit from Dave Berry in 1964
Fantastic 😂
The first sing was Paul Young. Check out his Tear Your Play House Down, for some amazing bass playing.
George Harrison concert for Bangladesh was the first supergroup concert for aid it inspired all that came after, it was the first happened in 1971 way before your limited memories
This song has been covered by various artists for whenever aid is needed, we had in 1989 Band Aid 2 where Kylie actually starts of the song and again the song raised lots of money for the famine crisis in Africa so would be nice if someone reacted to that version as well as it never seems to get any attention. Bananarama are the only act to appear in the original 1984 version and get to sing on the 1989 version.
I was a big fan of DuranDuran
Midge Ure , was the second lead singer of the band Ultravox (replacing John Fox) You reacted to and loved their song ‘Vienna’
j'avais 14 ans... quelle merveilleuse époque pour moi!!!! 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
Bob Geldoff you didn't do about is the lead singer of the Boomtown Rats. They had this very famous with "I Don't Like Mondays"
It was Tony Hadley of Spandau Ballet 😂
You re very young to not know Bob Geldorf. He is the organiser for Band Aid. You should see it if you like music
Midge Ure too
1 million ‘physical’ copy’s. These not forget that back then you had to actually go out and buy the single as a cassette or 45’ album. Couldn’t just download it.
It is an immortal song. Great souvenirs ! Thank you Dereck !

Best Xmas song
I remember watching Top of the Pops while in Huntingdon, UK in Nov. 1982 when a song came on called Do You Really Want To Hurt Me. I liked the song, but when I saw Boy George, I was like, "What the hell is THAT!!!" LOL!
The black group in the street was Kool & the Gang, others were Status Quo, the drummer from Culture Club, you can get all the names from the credits!
This is the harrowing news report seen nationwide in the UK at the end of November 1984, a report that brought us all to tears. Bob Geldoff decided to do something and this song raised millions and millions of ££££'s

I've seen a few of these and it's so funny how many Americans miss Sting, even with the clue is in the part he sings 🤣🤣

It’s Christmas time
There’s no need to be afraid
At Christmas time
We let in light and we banish shade
[Boy George]
And in our world of plenty
We can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world
At Christmas time

But say a prayer
Pray for the other ones
At Christmas time it’s hard
[Simon LeBon (Duran Duran)]
But when you’re having fun
There’s a world outside your window
And it’s a world of dread and fear
[Sting]
Where the only water flowing
Is the bitter sting of tears
[Bono & Sting]
And the Christmas bells that ring there
Are the clanging chimes of doom
[Bono]
Well tonight thank God it’s them
Instead of you
[Boy George & Others]
And there won’t be snow in Africa this Christmas time
The greatest gift they’ll get this year is life(Oooh)
Where nothing ever grows
No rain or rivers flow
Do they know it’s Christmas time at all?

Excellent Duran,Duran, Phil Collins, boy George, bananarama, George Michael, Sting, U2 ...i love 😍..what about USA for Africa 1985 ?
This was a November 1984 famine relief fundraiser for Ethiopia by English and Irish pop stars. Suggest "Tears Are Not Enough" by Northern Lights, which was Canada's 1985 fundraising song featuring Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Randy Bachman, Corey Hart and others.
Do They Know It's Christmas? > We Are The World 🧐
So cute that so many reactors draw a blank on Sting 😆
Pleeeeease react to my favourite Christmas song, "White Wine in the Sun" by Tim Minchin. (He is from Australia)
The song makes me cry, once a year, and it says how I feel about Christmas. (It's also Minchin-witty and funny)
Live Aid was also the brainchild of Bob Geldof - he is an extraordinary human who has lived an incredible life.
And Midge Ure
Check out the 50yr classic by Slade, Merry Christmas Everybody
Tony Hadley of Spandau Ballet.
Boy George has the most awesome voice. I love listening to him. And Paul Young was a huge fave of mine at the time this came out, so loved his anchoring it. And Duranie to the end. I was noting every single instance of all of the band members showing up in the video. What really got me, mostly on the behind the scenes video, is how horrible Bono sounds. But, then you add the music, and he's just perfect.
George Michael the best voice!!
