When Misa is the smart one in this movie, something is wrong....
Ceramic Plate she’s smarter than light
Maybe they're actually adapting the abridged version where misa is the smart one and light is a moron.
@Emperor Palpatine And Light in the film is dumber than your plan to turn Luke to the dark side.
Emperor Palpatine
Did try to make a pun out of *_Yagami_* (wannabe) ? 😂
*Smack Zack*
Wait...that makes too much sense. O.O
great video for a bad movie
S-s-s-s-senpie!
Thanks for watching my dude! I love your stuff.
No way that's so cool! I've seen tons of your videos even if I wouldn't be into the subject matter otherwise because they're just so entertaining.
Yall being mega gay lol
A year late but cool to see two youtubers I love watch each others videos.
@@WeekendWarrior1 To be honest, Netflix Adaptation of Death Note is my favourite movie of all time.
this is garbage, the movie, not the review. The review is 10/10.
Appreciate it, Gunbeard.
I will say though that William Defoe as Ryuk was the best casting choice ever. I fucking enjoyed the parts with Defoe Ryuk, I’d say the biggest sin of this movie was not having Defoe Ryuk around enough
I agree 100%
Scarcity and novelty go hand in hand.
Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it.
walkingcubkid
He’s on par with anime Ryuk (eng dub)
Agreed, and I haven't seen this movie.
totaly agree
I feel bad for Willem Defoe, he put on an amazing voice performance. He should do more voice acting.
He's the only best part of the movie.
Willem Defoe is still getting work and likely got paid for his performance. That's a good thing.
I can not unhear the green goblin every time he speaks tho.
@@Onsvaltti ITSY BITSY SPIDER!
Onsvaltti Well I mean, that's kinda the appeal isn't it?
Even the parody opening of death note with the fairy odd parents style is better than the netflix movie
There's something like that?
Even? That shit was god's last gift until he went MIA and hasn't been seen since.
Sounds hilarious, do you have a link ?
@@WeekendWarrior1 Deathly God Parents.
My biggest issue with the movie is that light isn’t the driver of his plot. He does things reluctantly, mia doesn’t want him to stop, ryuk doesn’t want him to stop, and both threaten him if he ever does. In the original, he can stop at any point without consequences, he will lose his memory of it, all evidence would be gone. He chooses not to because of his ideals.
In this one, halfway through, he wants to stop, but can’t anymore. This character is trapped by the plot, the anime light controls the plot
Indeed. He's along for the ride.
I think that was by design, but the director failed to realize that it wouldn't make for an interesting, likable protagonist.
I totally forgot that Light had an eject button the whole time! That'd usually sap the investment, but it enhances the plot.
Oooh, I forget how good the anime is lmao
The actor who played L has quite possibly one of the cringiest Netflix interviews out there. He literally stays in character the whole time and acts like a weirdo.
I saw that too. Fucking hilarious.
you could say that he took an *L*
LyleVSXyle
at least he tried.... Unlike Mr. Turner
So hes a more pretentious jared leto jesus i hate method actors sometimes why did they do it to L
At least not the worst character even if it is cringy 😆
Trust me, as a teenager, I can say no one would care about the cheating. In my school, they don't even pay people to do it, they just make friends that are smarter than them.
Facts in college i paid someone $10 for an old essay they turned in and i just changrd it up a little
Kira being an average kid is by far the worse decision you could make, and destroys the entire plot of the story. The fact that in the anime it was picked up by a genius teenager, with strong views on justice in the world, who also has sociopathic qualities drives the entire narrative about the perfect criminal who is almost impossible to catch, someone that requires the best detective to pursue him. He is still relatable as a young high schooler. He's even relatable to young people who look at the world and wish they could do something about all the injustice. But the fact that in the movie they made him so unintelligent and unconfident ruined everything. They made him the exact opposite of what the character is supposed to be. They made him a little bitch. He's the opposite cunning. He's the opposite of careful. He tells a girl he just met because about the Death Note because he's that desperate for this girl. He blatantly tells L he's Kira when he's confronted. It's so god damn bad. They couldn't have made him that straight A, popular, perfect kid (who's secretly a sociopath with a god-complex) with a loving family at home, could they? Because that's too UNORDINARY, and UNRELATABLE! We have to make him an edgy, cringey teen who gets bullied at school, a-a-and also HIS MOM WAS KILLED BY A CRIMINAL! Gotta get that generic UNDERDOG STORY! Having Light being a perfect, privileged person definitely wasn't a main trope in the source material AT ALL!!!
Also, L is bad. He's shit. He was somewhat okay at first. But he turned into this emotional trainwreck. Whatever happened to L being cool and calm in every. single. situation up to his death? At the worst he seemed fascinated when surprising/unfortunate things happened. That's it. It's almost as if L being almost completely emotionless in the anime was a BIG PART OF HIS CHARACTER OR SOMETHING. But that's okay. Because they made him black, and dress up like Rick Owens, and that's cool and progressive.
'Mia' was a psychopath who ended up being more like Kira than Light in this movie. Nothing like the original Misa who was merely a pawn in Kira's game. And she ended up knowing it, and didn't give a shit; because she was someone so completely obsessed with Kira that she'd do anything for him.
Fuck this movie. It didn't get a single character right.
Can I get a tldr babe?
@@lightish3754 tl:dr Light isn't Light, L isn't L and Mia isn't Mia. Nothing is right.
Americans have some sort of fixation about turning anime protagonists into bullied highschoolers, they did the same with Dragon Ball.
Dont get me started on his father
Björck Björck technically it can work giving the right direction and script I mean look at Japan’s mini series
"My brother and I grew up watching a lot of Anime, so I woke up one morning and said _hey, let's shit over one of the best animes in existence_ and that's pretty the foundation we all followed during the development and filming of this movie."

If you played "It's Raining Men" by The Weather Girls at the part where the FBI agents were leaping to their deaths, that would have been hilariously perfect.
IT'S RAINING MEN
HALLEJUAH
I'll take a potato chip and make a review
Nice
You know, this movie wouldn't be as hated as it is if it was just a standalone original story set in the Death Note universe. Just change the names, the look of the shinigami, add a touch of Final Destination, and everything would be fine. Instead, it had to be a westernized adaptation of the original story.
Actually, I always look at it as an original stand alone because of how different it already is, and even so, I reallllyyyyy hate it.
Bad acting, bad cinematography, the plot is a mess, there are too many plot holes, character development is rushed and makes no sense, a ton of wasted potential, the philosophy and message make no sense, a lot of the action is quite bland and boring, etc.
Even then, people would at least judge this movie by its own merits, and not by what it's supposed to be.
Yeah, something like "A Movie set in the DEATH NOTE UNIVERSE" would be better at least. Turn "Light Turner" to "Mike Turner," have him piggy back on the success of KIRA in-universe, something like that.
The way they did Light here does no justice to the character. And even the changes to the character don't make him interesting as a protagonist on his own.
Well unfortunately it is Death Note and it is fucking trash
I hadn't watched the anime when I watched the movie, and I still thought it was terrible
"Adan Wingard dies by making a movie so bad he kills himself out of shame"
The One, and Only good thing about Death Note 2017 is Ryuk's design, and William Defoe's performance. That's it. Nothing else.
That back alleys scene is wrong, but not because of deus ex machina baker-to-the-rescue; but because there should not be such a direct physical confrontation between L and Kira at all. Chase sequence, srsly? If director thought "we need more action", there are dozens of ways...
That's a good point as well. It's just a fundamental misunderstanding by the director.
You know what annoys me the most about this adaptation? That they completely butchered lights character, in the show he wasn't really fazed by anything. He always kept a cool head and was a complete badass. In the movie on the other hand... I don't think that I have to further go into this. But I guess the video already went into that, it still annoys me somewhat.
I also think that the first use of the death note was way better in the anime.
Btw I also agree with the guy who said, that it wouldn't be hated as much if it was a standalone story, so yeah kudos to that guy I guess
Yeah!If it was a "movie in the death note universe" or something that my commenters said, this wouldn't have been so badly received. I think it would even reach "so bad it's good" status if it was its own thing. But the writers decided to use Light and L, so here we are.
I think what's even scarier is the fact that Adam Wingard will also be directing Kong vs Godzilla (because getting a horror director to direct a monster action film is such a good idea...). After seeing how he butchered Death Note, I am very concerned with how he will be approaching that film.
Or any film for that matter.
Worked so well for Godzilla (2014)
...
...
...
...
I hate that film so fucking much
Adam Wingard is gonna direct Kong v. Godzilla? Prepare for an angsty, rebellious teenage Kong and an apathetic Godzilla who secretly wants to have friends.
D180223
Well, there goes my hype for that movie...
There was an article that said Adam Wingard was set to direct an adaptation of Neon Geneis Evangelion, with Leslie Jones, a 49 year old woman, cast as Asuka, a 14 year old girl. Luckily that article turned out to be a fake (would really piss me off my favorite anime got butchered - It should be reserved for an actual visionary director like Cary Fukunaga or Nicolas Winding Refn)
That scene where Light refuses to kill his father and that's how L figures it out, would make more sense if the conference that was done by L where he eggs Kira on to kill him, instead it was a random person taunting Kira. Says their name and all and they die then when the dad is put out there, when he doesn't die, L could put it together that the dad and Kira are connected somehow, which would lead L to suspect Light
"Ciar" (/ki:r/) is actually another word for dark in Irish, however "Kira", which would be spelt "Ciara" in modern Irish, is a girls name. So he's full of shit basically.
Source: Am Irish speaker
Pretty cool info broski.
I don't speak Irish or Gaelish, but I thought Kiara/Ciara was a feminine form of Ciar, meaning black or darkness. Is this incorrect?
It's so cool to meet someone who actually speaks a gaelic language :-D
Bairinde It's derived as a female equivalent to Ciaran, which roughly translates as "dark one". "Ciar" means dark, "-an" is a common suffix in Irish male names. Ciara is a modern name, invented in the twentieth century, there's no exclusively feminine suffixes in Irish given names I can think of, so the "-a" is likely taken from Italian, where it usually denotes a feminine name. Anyway, my point is you're basically right and the movie isn't.
Ahhh, I understand, thank you!
It's basically like the name "Friederike", a female form of Friedrich (Frederike/Frederik etc.), which didn't exist before the 19th century or so, with -rich or -rik being a suffix to signify someone or something is male.
The movie was so full of shit on so many levels :-o
Am is irish too

"I always thought if I was ever gonna adapt something into a movie that I should do Death Note"
I think that explains everything.
A true fan of Death Note would be terrified of creating a horrible piece of shit of a movie because the ceiling is so high. This director's ego is obviously huge, no wonder his creation is an abomination.
Makes me wonder if he ever watched the anime.
I guess I didn’t realize it really until this review, but the characters in this adaptation say “fuck” a lot. It makes Light and Kira sound stupid, improper, and weak. I try to let this movie stand (or more accurately, collapse) on its own merits, but that is very inappropriate for Light and Misa’s characters. Misa is a public icon that sells herself on her innocent appearance. Light is a model citizen recognized as a genius. Either of them swearing like sailors would sully their public faces. It’s a seemingly minor detail, but it does characterize them.
The movie doesn't fail because it's a poor adaptation (it is, even with its flaws the anime still has great moments and ideas) it fails because its STUPID, the script is easily one of the worst ones ever because nothing makes sense, there's deus ex machinas and plot convenience up the wazzoo and the ending its one of the biggest ass pulls ever. Seriously fuck this movie.
Exactly bro. The shitty movie was shit because the script is a fuck up, the actors weren't good (or well directed).
6:16 Okay, wait. So this teacher sees an unconscious (?) student lying in the rain and their first response is to notice wet papers and immediately recognize them as tests.
Ok then.
9:20 You wouldn't understand, I NEEDED to help them cheat to get pocket change. Because I'm smart, and this is how I plan to change society.
So if a fake name, like Watari, was enough all it would take is to nickname a person and write that name down and it would work...
OR that was his REAL ACTUAL NAME in the movie, making L dumb for not protecting his boy Watari.
And even then, if it were a real name, even this less developed version of the Death Note still needs a full name (first and last) to kill. But just Watari works... does he only have one name? Was he just an orphan raised to be a super-caretaker, like L was raised to be a super-detective?
I think since you hadn't really seen the Anime your review was a bit more refreshing, as nearly everyone else is just comparing it to the original and how/why it's flawed. Which is a valid argument, but makes all their reviews very similar, since you hadn't seen the original, your focusing on why this adaptation falls flat on its face even when the original (is mostly) not considered.
Entertaining video. Good use of editing and inserted visuals for humor.

To be fair, you need a very high iq to understand the death note live action reboot.
underrated post
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand the 2017 Death Note movie. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Light's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they’re not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike the 2017 Death Note movie truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Light's existential catchphrase “AHHHHHHHHHHHH,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Adam Wingard's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂
And yes, by the way, I DO have a Death Note 2017 tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.
1/10, need the whole copypasta, idiot.
like light's iq in the live action version.
lights iq in the anime compared to lights iq in the movie is like the twin towers before and after 9/11
i have legit no idea how i found you. i opened my browser today and a tab with one of your videos opened with it. But damn was that ever a good thing to happen to me you have just my kind of humor.
Ayyyy, glad you found the channel Cryvolence!
7:45 light vs Peter parker
Fuck me I love the editing and these reviews. Actually looks at the situations logically rather than cinemasins nitpicking
The creators were so inept that couldn’t remember if they were adapting the story of Kira from Death Note or Kira from JoJo’s Part 4
I'd like to think they could've handled L expertly by having him be played by some actual celebrity, and when pressed for his name he'd give said celebrity's name. This would've been a superior change to the source material.
See, a point of contention in the anime was that L gave up the name of some rockstar, so that if Light wrote his name down he'd end up killing the rockstar instead. Thing is, in the anime L looks nothing like the rockstar.
That was the whole point though. L took the name of someone famous so Light could only think of the rockstar's face when writing it down so if Light were to try and kill L by said name, L would have evidence that Light is Kira.
If L looked like the rockstar, Light may have thought of L's face while writing the name and nothing would have happened.
Ryuuga Hideki, lol
Am I the only one who laughed his ass off when he saw that scene of Light freaking out when I saw this movie? Come on, it was so cringe that it was funny.
I think that all depends on a person's CTL - "CRINGE TOLERANCE LEVEL"
Mayhaps yours was larger? :))))
Light: Kira means Light in celtic
Naegi: NO THATS WRONG!
Literally me: OBJECTION!
Me: *HOLD IT!*
Every Danganronpa ahoge: *SORE WA CHIGAU YO!!!!*
Light "Turner" in this movie reminds me of a character from a video game and that character is Dante. NOT Dante from Devil May Cry but THE Dante from DmC and that's a bad thing
I'mma paraphrase one guy who I forgot, the FULL title is DmC - Devil may Cry is so stupid. People already know what DmC is!
Ikr. It's called Devil May Cry or DMC for fuck's sake! Some guy at Ninja Theory don't need to call it DmC: Devil may Cry. They bloody get it! The fans played the games gdm!
Death note is my favorite hentai
Wut
What annoyed me (as side form everything) was why didn't he just have Watari kill L? He had him under his control, Sure you could say that you can't have someone kill under your control but didn't mia do it with the agents? Or even light at the end having that plan of people passing the note killing until he woke up. Even if he couldn't get watari to poison L or shoot him, couldn't he have gotten some other agent to do it or even someone to blow themselves up with L in next to them? I can't remember all of the rules in the anime/manga but i don't believe there was one in the movie. If there was both light and mia got others to kill for them by writing in the book so why couldn't watari just shoot him....
They need the BIG EPIC HOLLYWOOD BLOWING SHIT UP conclusion, I think
Weekend Warrior lol yea you're right ;P
The manga has 2 rules explicitly preventing the Death Note from killing anyone whose name isn't also written in the notebook. The second one even clarifies "This is to ensure other lives are not influenced."
This movie, however, clearly doesn't have such a rule, since there's quite a few collateral kills even before Mia does that thing with the agents. Or the rules preventing full-blown mind control. So yeah, no reason they couldn't have Watari kill L.
5:50 You know, this scene shows just a glimmer of what could've been. They could have made the American Light a misfit genius. He actually scores a win here by getting into the bullies head. They could've totally ran with that - he likes to play mental games and can dominate people with his words, despite being physically unintimidating. He has a look of viciousness in his eyes here. He's nervous, and unsure if it'll work, but that took some balls. Hence why the cheerleader got a good laugh, because the bully had been taken down a peg with just a few words.
But alas, right after he scores a win, he shows himself to be a phaggut by rules-lawyering the bully, pointing out that the bully is a chad but will be punished for being a chad.
C'mon Light, that's some pathetic shit.
He's nothing like the anime Light, but they still could've written a decent alternative, and they chose not to.
By the way L never was seen on TV. I haven't even seen this movie and I'm pissed off.
Kira in katakana (as it's written in the manga) means "killer".
They couldn't keep it that simple for the adaptation
Does this mean we’re not getting a naked brothers band reunion movie?
You can just record yourself strumming a guitar in your birthday suit.
You actually remember that? You just got yourself a digital high 5.
Oof that would be tough, considering one is a good actor in critically acclaimed films, and the other was in Deathflix.
What i get from the netflix movie is a total misunderstanding of the anime. Light doesnt freak out because its a death god. Its because someone who he didnt know was in his room. Once he noticed it was a death god he was like "oh ok"
Also you do indeed someones REAL name
The movie is great if you watch as a comedy.
Yeah, kinda. I just think it takes itself a bit too serious for that.
I really think they took some parts of the film seriously. Like the actor who plays L, he was really acting as L in an interview of him.
Excluding him being black, he is actually acting like L to almost a T. The rest of the movie was SO NOT EVEN CLOSE to the anime.
@@dolomaticus1180 L would not be running that much. Hell, he probably wouldn't be running. And he definitely wouldn't be bursting through a restaurant counter and disrupting peace.
I love your content but seriously, watching any scene to do with this adaptation is pain, and I’m not even that huge of a Death Note fan
2:50 is a perfect example of Brazilian trolling. Orgulho do meu povo!
I KNEW IT
@@WeekendWarrior1 Brazilians trolling over all the world, we're everywhere

The two part Japanese live action movie of Death Note is good and deserves more recognition ❤️
Also the live action Gintama!
The fact that both Light and L were SO unintelligent should show how little they understood the source material.
"Yes sir we found him but was overcome with an irresistible urge to shoot the fucker down" Oh my fuck that killed me
I think that, in a way, it helped the original DN. Now, it is proven the original to be superior in everyway. And I really do not like DN at all.
Misa in the anime is such a lovable character, she is smart(kinda) but only to reach her goal which is to make Light her boyfriend(yes! she’s obsessive). On the flip side Light doesn’t care about her and sees her as a burden, so he threatened that L will get them both making her own Death God commit suicide in order to save her life. The whole process of the plot in the movie makes no sense between the two, they don’t have chemistry and Misa is utterly disgusted by Light mere presence. The legit thought of going to L and trying to convince him to team up shatters what little tension that remained in the story of cat and mouse between Kira and the police. Oh! And not mention the fact he is a corrupt person who sells homework’s and has the audacity to talk about being a god who serves justice. This movie is trash and should remain in the darkest voids of history.
Light suddenly became a screaming p**** in this movie
You sure this is October because from the first few minutes of this video it looks like christmas to me.
Light doing homework for other? where is my perfect light that love justice and selfish.
The only good things about the movie: Switching Misa and Light's roles and showing how Misa dies, which doesn't happen in the original (she dies but it's explained in a novel of all things which confused people.)
i couldnt watch it in one go. I had to take a break every 10 minutes so I dont punch my laptop screen in frustration and anger
They have a manga, an anima, and a Japanese live action movie(which was really good) to go off of. And they still fucked it up. I didnt even finish this movie
So... Japanese-speaking Light refers to Ryuk as “Yook”. Do they not pronounce the “r” or are we being punk’d?

Glad to have earned it Ha Ha!
Seeing that quote in my native language in the begining of the video is just golden
If this was my first exposure to Death Note, I would think the original must be shit.
The line "[director's/writer's name] had a different vision for [piece of art]" is a modern euphemism for "[director's/writer's name] doesn't know how to write their own stuff and so instead wrote some bad fan fiction of [piece of art]".
Why is L's gun the blade runner gun?
They CGI'd his effing arm! 20:42

I know this is an old rev8ew but if you havent seen the death note anime to the end yet you really should. Its great, truly amazing
Remember when L first challenged Kira? Using a death row inmate, not an entire club? Yeah, the fucking anime had more thought put into it.
13:33 "I'm 12 parallels universes ahead of you."

Sorry, it has been a long time since I watched the anime but didnt the book only worked if you knew their real name and face?
If i remembered correctly as well, they do have the choice of being able to see their names but they will lose a few years of their life?
Still the only channel I watch every minute of for topics I don't even like
Nope.
He doesn't make an argument that the principal should go after the bullies. Because they (principal, some teacher and a nurse) have no fucking clue that there are bullies responsible for beating up Light. Mia told them that Light knocked himself out on a pole so principal thinks he is looking at a cheater with no space awareness and not at a bullied cheater.
Which makes Light and his rethoric absolutely moronic and makes him a type of person who can't even stand up for himself let alone for others.
I just like keeping commenting on theses vids, I still enjoy the film but thanks to you I am aware more of these flaws, yeah that’s first for me on here haha!
back on track.
Origin of the name Kira/Kiara:
Feminine form of Kieran, an Anglicized form of the Irish Ciarán, which is derived from the Gaelic ciar (black) and the diminutive suffix -an: hence, "little dark one." The name was originally bestowed upon those babies born with dark hair or a dark complexion.
From Old Irish cíar (“dark”), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱēy(w)-, *ḱyē(w)- (“grey, dark”). Further cognates are Old Novgorodian хѣрь (xěrĭ, “gray cloth”) and Old English hār (“grey-haired”).
This was hysterical

What's the language your talking when death note called

3 unskipable 30 second ads: well hello there
The fact that original Light doesn't even need to overtly talk about his philosophy and it shows through his actions and motivations, in comparison to Whiny McSneezyface in the American adaptation who literally says it to the principal, probably says a lot about the expectations of the director how American audiences' intelligence.
Yknow, because they think Americans are too stupid to understand subtlety. Which is pretty sad.
OHH THIS WILL BE GOOD
