    Disney managed to start a discussion about "franchise Fatigue" after like what? 3 years? It took them 3 years to make us tired of a franchise that started in the 70's... Now that's impressive

    I think the thing that is missing fron Alden's "Solo" performance is actually something that the original _didn't_ have, which is actual charm. Though many people say Solo is supposed to be dashing, charming, suave, etc., the original was actually not very charming IN THE TYPICAL SENSE. While many see him that way, I believe it's because of Harrison's natural charisma and presence that gives his character that feel. Solo, as a character, is actually quite "doggish" and simple, having the feel of someone who really does work in smuggling cargo; he isn't cocky in the typical sense, and everything about him feels organic. Ford as a man doesn't have the typical "pretty boy" or "handsome" appearance -- he IS handsome, just not like typical hollywood actors. Alden, however, has the pretty boy look. "His" Solo has the typical cocky, arrogant behavior that most daring heroes have. I think that's why many people don't like him. Ford's Solo felt like an average guy, but he was cool as a result of that: he had a natural "cool" about him, and he doesn't look like the archetypal hero. Alden's Solo feels more forced and "injected", like he's trying to be suave and charming. He doesn't feel or look like someone who belongs to the underground smuggling ring, he looks like a hero.

    Characterization Time
    Han - A grinning, wannabe smuggler with almost negative charisma that can see into the future except when it comes to ladies that learned to not trust people after not trusting people. Is amazing at Sabac, flying, and shooting and always has been. High score for Kessel Run by using nitros even after going off-course, evading Empire, tricking giant space monster, and almost getting sucked into gravity well. *Cough fraud Cough"
    Chewy - A creature that doesn't kill Han because he speaks Wookie, even though he understands English. Gives his life to Han on a whim, even when given the chance to run before meeting Drident and risking his life. Meets people, frees people, leaves people for Han again because he's so damn charismatic. Useless in film climax making him just so cool.
    Kiera - Just a small town girl living in a lonely world. Loves Han because he's Han. After 3 years becomes a top assassin somehow and second in command to a dude reporting directly to Maul by doing "things". Screams to increase grenade explosion radius. Is evil because plot after pulling quintuple betrayals in the span of 15 minutes. Now Maul apprentice for spin off movies.
    Becket - Reloads guns through flips like a Blazeblue character. Had a train robbery planned that had no chance of working without Han and Chewy. Waifu dies in a millisecond after he triggers death flag. Tells Han to not trust people and to think ahead, then is dumbstruck when Han doesn't trust him and thinks ahead. So dumbstruck that he becomes brain dead leaving the office for Drident boss battle instead of killing everyone leading to his death by Han. RIP
    Lando - Opposite of Han, all charisma with no actual skill in anything else. Got to Kessel on easy mode and had waifu droid die in his arms after ripping her in half. Loves capes. Cheats at Sabac. Pansexual because some one said so even though movie doesn't support this claim. Coward right before movie climax. Useless except for ship and droid.
    L3 - An unintential joke of a character that has best map in head because plot. Wants to free droids that were at war with the galaxy a few years prior. Turns out to be right about droid sentience right before getting domed. Now a part of the Falcon for the rest of time. Bet that she is gonna be in episode 9 somehow.
    Drident - An evil prick. Kills governors. Likely to have sex slaves and has branding fetish. Has Han's plan given to him but still doesn't prepare well enough and dies for it without accomplishing anything. In 15 minutes of movie between 2 scenes. Does almost nothing in film. RIP
    Little Girl - Random ass character that somehow leads group of proto-Rebels. Killed Becket's waifu and pilot but expects sympathy from Becket and Han. Says Han could be general because of one simple plan. Deep voice modulator.
    Maul - Honestly best character in movie by having little lines. Has robot legs. Turns on lightsaber for fanservice and it's so red it's red in the hologram. Get ready for Maul. A Star Wars Story. Overrated by fans just for looking cool.
    Becket's Waifu - Shoots droids to reveal her position. Can't aim for shit. Loses blaster but because droids are incompetent has time to say goodbye and self-destruct without even trying to live or think of another solution. RIP
    Four-Arms - Pilot that can't take on one maurader with multiple sets of fuckin arms before dying like bitch. Says Hans a good pilot for going same speed as train. RIP
    Space Monster - Lives next to only thing that can kill it for however long. Then gets sucked into gravity well with no sense of self-preservation over a small ship. RIP
    Lady Proxima - So much time and effort to create a giant water centipede and use it for 5 seconds in the movie.
    Definitely didn't like this movie but had some laughs when L3 died and some Lando moments like his book narration. Boring action, no tension, little sense in plot, and mostly subpar acting. But it's a Star Wars movie so 9.5/10, not enough L3.
    Edit: I forgot the most important aspect of the movie, the dice. This film revealed the massive scope of their importance in this franchise and make TLJ even better than it already was. Read below for this explanation.
    True Rating: 9.8/10

    • @willrocku0530
      @willrocku0530 6 років тому +15

      Weekend Warrior Yes the important dice. They were given the meaning of Han having them so they are important. That's how meaning works. You have an item that represents a character thrown into the movie after they die and are never seen with or talking about the item. Then you release a prequel film about the character just having the item with no significance given to them in the movie but because the character has them in the final scene of the movie then they are given meaning. Through this the dice are important in Solo and it has more meaning through retrospect in TLJ. One of the most important aspects of this movie, no this universe and I forgot about it. I dont deserve to even watch these movies. Thanks for helping me see the error of my ways. Let me correct my rating.

      Wait, that was SABAC that they were showing in the movie? I had misheard it as "Pazaak" in the movie and gotten myself worked up over them completely changing "Pazaak" from how it was in the Knights of the Old Republic games (which are really good; play the first one for a straight Star Wars experience and the second one (with the Restored Content mod) for a deconstruction (and reconstruction?) of Star Wars and, to a lesser extent, certain RPG mechanics).

    See I thought L3 was a joke character too, but when she freed the droids they started going ape shit and rebelling. So she was right in terms of droids having free will and being sentient. If for example she freed the first droid and it just kept doing what it was doing it would have shown how silly her plight actually is. Also when she died it was drawn out so long and dramatic with sad music playing. Maybe if Han or some one recognized the absurdity of the situation then maybe I could see her being a parody, but I think she was intended to be a serious character.

    The deeper issue with no one asking for this film is the fact that it really doesn't add anything to anything. There was no reason to make the film, since he doesn't really need a backstory, and in the current state of the universe, his backstory doesn't add to anything or effect anything moving forward. It's the frame issue with the prequel films. THAT'S why people kept saying that no one asked for it.

    In all seriousness, I agree with you for the most part. But I also agree with the idea of fatigue. Fatigue doesn't only come from quantity of something.
    There's no doubt that TLJ was controversial, and for a lot of disgruntled fans, not enough time passed for them to get over their feelings of that movie and get hyped for another. They were practically promoting Solo from the moment TLJ ended. You couple that with fans not being ecstatic about Rouge One (the other "star wars story") and you have a recipe for lukewarm reception.

    • @WeekendWarrior1
      @WeekendWarrior1  6 років тому +11

      Yeah, I think the fatigue doesn't really come from the product in this case, but how they're handling it. Does that make sense? Marvel should be stale at this point but those guys are still going strong.

    • @FITZFACTOR
      @FITZFACTOR 6 років тому +8

      Totally makes sense. Marvel also has a huge universe and history to draw from. I think RLM said it first that the Star Wars universe isn't really that big (especially after scrapping all EU material). They really do need to be creating new stories (the def. had enough hype for it), but so far everything has been either a flashback or a continuation of the same story.

      It's fatigue of bad movies repeating iconography and story beat's of the original trilogy to exhaustion. I think that the reason the prequels as bad films as they were didn't do the damage TLJ did to the franchise was because it create new fresh things (this trilogy basically is Empire VS Rebellion all over again), planet's, ships, aliens species, a new type of army to face the "stormtroopers", characters (even if Lucas was incapable of exploring them in meaningful ways in the movies, but Grievous for example is great in Clone Wars) and was visually interesting (like Attack of the Clones is atrocious in story, but the final battle is beautiful). Even if pissed the old fans it made new ones and create material for the next decade of EU expansion.

    Wow. L3-37 becomes the voice of the Millennium Falcon. *There's* a little detail I didn't hear about until just now.
    ...Actually, you know something? This is *exactly* like Fi in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. She's an annoying sidekick character who butts in all the time to say pointless crap, and she even sounds like a robot with that whole "there is a 70% chance you are going in the right direction" thing. Then, at the end, you're expected to feel something when she "dies", even though the game never gave her a personality or anything else to connect with. And *then* it turns out she's the Master Sword. So this character you hated, who had no reason to exist at all, is now symbolically a part of every other game in the franchise, like an albatross of bad writing hanging around your neck.
    It's hard to think of this as anything other than a huge middle finger to anyone who cares about previous works in the franchise. They're basically saying "This is the most amazing character anyone's ever created, and we'll retcon everything in this stupid franchise to prove it."

    Solo is a decent movie it gave me everything I wanted to see in young Hans life, meeting Chewy, the Kessle run, getting the falcon, I got everything. The problem is still the last Jedi. It let so many people down (me kind of included) that they were unwilling to give Solo a chance which isn't fair.

    "Who asked for this" means that this movie exists to answer questions no one asked. Questions like "How did Han and Chewy meet?" or "Where does the "Solo" come from?" and many more.
    A movie that doesn't really add anything to the character, it only fills outs his background sheet which was better when it was sparce. A rogue's misterious past is part of its charm and you either keep it that way or make it really important (Aragorn).

    2:10 I feel like the real question shouldn't be "Who Asked For This?" I feel it should rather be "What was the point?" Was it really necessary to make an entire film dedicated to Solo's origin story? Was it really that significant that it merited a full-length theatrical production?
    To quote another critic I like (you've probably heard of him Zero Punctuation/Ben Yatzee...I LOVE THE GUY ^^) "Is this the most interesting part of your character's life, and if not why aren't you telling us THAT story instead?" But there-in lies the problem. The most interesting part of Han Solo's life has already been told in the original trilogy. He helped take down the galactic Empire...anything he did prior to that quite understandably pails in comparison.

    My issue with L337 is the same with every character or media that tries to hide behind the "its supposed to be like that" shield. Just because they're supposed to be like that, doesn't somehow wipe away how annoying they are, and make it all better.
    If someone is annoying, they're annoying. If they're supposed to be annoying, then their annoying. If they're supposed to be annoying to serve some purpose in the plot, or as a joke, then they're annoying.

    I think the issue is that even though we didn’t NEED the film, Disney failed to make us WANT it either. We didn’t NEED an Ant-Man movie (especially one that had kind of similar director issues), but they convinced us to want it by showing his cool powers and conveying the film’s fun tone. Solo didn’t start marketing itself until way too late, and didn’t show the sort of stuff that might have generated interest in the film, like the smuggling aspect and the droid uprising and stuff, instead focusing on just showing us Han Solo and Cherie and Lando and other things that we have already seen.

    • @WeekendWarrior1

    *"The Force Awakens got 57 million for a Thursday-night opening. The Last Jedi got 45... Rogue One got 29... SOLO... got 14 million! So... low!"* (- muh boi WW)
    For some reason I am reminded of a lecture by Jordan Peterson where he talks about how when people rise to success that success tends to multiply, and so too does spiraling down into failure. "To those who have, more will be given. And to those who do not, more will be taken away". Some bible quote I'm sure. It's a really interesting analysis about how successes and failures can build on themselves and make themselves greater than before.
    With Star Wars we now see, exemplified, the downward spiral.
    *"Rogue One is a movie nobody asked for, and look how THAT turned out!"* (- some guy who's not as handsome as me)
    Yeah it's RIIIGHT there behind solo on that whole "downward spiral" thing. :V
    That said, I disagree with this guy completely. Star Wars is a franchise, and a franchise absolutely DOES have an obligation to cater to it's audience, it's called Supply and Demand. If you supply something nobody is demanding you better pray to god your INCREDIBLY RISKY GAMBLE pays off. It's simply not safe or smart to hinge your bets on wild, out-of-left-field ideas (unless you're Nintendo but you're not Nintendo now, are you?).
    5:13 - (REFLEXIVE PAUSE!) This should've been the thumbnail. B)
    6:28 - *THE PROBLEM OF ALDEN ERENREICH* ... Eren? No Attack on Titan joke?
    Didn't see the movie so I can't say for sure, but maybe the problem wasn't so much that AoT's MC didn't act like the Han Solo the fans know, but that he didn't act like a younger Han Solo that was BELIEVABLE? Like, Young Han Solo is Point-A and Harrison Ford's Han Solo is Point-B, and I think the fans tried connecting Point-A and Point-B and went "... what the hell? How does this line up!?".
    That's the impression I get, anyway.
    15:49 - *"Oh, her memory has now become the Millenium Falcon's navigation thing?"*
    ... does that make it the MILLENNIAL Falcon??? *BADUM-PUM-PISSSHHH!!!
    16:25 - *"The icing on the cake is that ANITA SARKEESIAN knows it's a joke!"*
    She'll be fine. She'll console herself with the GIANT PILES OF MONEY she made conning her brainwashed feminist SJW followers into giving her so she could "afford" to put up a DISCORD SERVER.
