Driving Sports TV - 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart vs. Subaru STI

- Jess gets behind the wheel of the 237-hp 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart. Aaron wonders how much slower it is versus a 2011 Subaru WRX STI in a straight line and Ryan thrashes the Ralliart on the Driving Sports City Circuit.
@scbman Why? The car is not called "Eks" or "ten" - its the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. That's it. Everything else is whatever else we want to call it to differentiate it from previous models.
If you paid attention, we state that its a price comparison. One costs nearly the same as the other. That's plenty of reason to compare. It's certainly not our best review, I'll give you that - but there's nothing wrong with the premise.
@troydiamond ...and anybody can have a voice to speak back. Thanks for watching.
@aznrule191 As for cobb stage 2...well the cost for parts on that is 2300 bucks which seemes to be the mid pipe, down pipe, axleback and the accessport tune...thats kinda expensive. Just a dyno tune on a RA by GST motors gives you 30 WHP. FMIC + piping, boost pill, BOV and test pipe is 60 WHP. A catback and downpipe is another 20 WHP...that is 270 WHP (more then the EVO) before we hit 1.5 grand. This is what I mean when I say the RA takes to tuning well. The WRX just doesn't jump like that.
@wrxFTWdey You ran a 13.4 on a wet runway overgrown with grass? Remarkable! Conditions have to always be considered when comparing numbers.
@FinalCorner Next week's show focuses on the STI.
@idrift4wd Your results are the same as ours: about 1 second difference. We just use static start and choose to not do a tranny-busting clutch dump... because we don't consider those representative of any real-use value. Many outlets use a 5mph rolling start or a 3 foot roll-up for 1/4-mile times, which is how you get a mid 13 in an STI.
@troydiamond No prob. I write and edit the show, and I agree that the portion in question isn't the best. Some things look better on script then they do in the final product. We learn, we move on, we get it better next time. .
Have you launched a twin-clutch Mitsubishi? It takes... a while for everything to happen.
i'm pretty sure my decision on the two isn't going to be which one is faster. to me, it's all about options, comfort, and style. imo.
@vspec20026 That's been done by magazines before and isn't a bad idea. Of course in our test we're comparing two turbo-charged awd rally-bred cars. Not a n/a fwd vs a turbo awd... so you comparison is even more ridiculous... but I like it anyhow.
@ColdNapalm42 Ok, cool...thanks! I heard there is a way to fake launch control with the RA. You push the pedal fast and repeatedly and hold the break at the same time. Then after a few seconds, just push the pedal and releas the break and the RA will take off quite fast whitout the normal lag.
If you look closely the sti has a navigation, meaning they didn’t actually test a “base” STI...
@fourtycents no because a wrx limited with the satellite radio and nav system is just under 32 grand and an evo MR starts at 37 grand. even a striped gsr(which loses the TC transmission) is still almost 34 grand.
@JonathanRav They do in the US as well unless you get the touring package.
people come on the only reason they are comparing the sti and the ralliart was because the ralliart is priced fully loaded around 32 grand where you can get a base model sti for around that. a base model wrx on the other hand is closer to 25 grand which is much less than even the base model ralliart. what they were trying to prove here was that if you want performance and are willing to spend more than 30 grand why not just go with the sti instead of shorting yourself and getting a ralliart.
@KuostA A Corolla and a Ferrari don't cost the same. The Ralliart and the base STI do. Your analogy makes lime cat sad.
I never really understand why people want a comfortable sports car...I myself drive Evo 9 and I like exactly how driver/hardore focused setting it has. We buy Evo because of its performance, not because of its "refinement"
@mbehring Derp.. thanks for catching my mistake.
@shawn963741 ...and launch control. It could have shaved 1/2 a second from the 1/4-mile if it had it. As it is, can't preload with the brakes without pissing the car off.
coming from an evo x owner the awe control button does not change bias from front to back but merely how open the diff is. sad to see people that dont know what their talking about making videos.
Hello Mr Karty Im doing some searches on STI n EVO. I did lots of researches, I find EVO's handling is little better than STI. I got lots of online details about STI. but i couldnt find any good online source about EVO. So plz could you let me know about EVOs torque split in tarmac, gravel n snow mode. I heard little bit. its normally front wheel drive, it transfer power to the rear axel according to requirement. Could you explain in detail little bit plz.
did i explain this to you? i thought i wrote a post about it
Kartyman550 No my frd you did nt explain to me. pls if you can
Evo's actually handle a lot better then stis bottom line. stis plow a lot or understeer. just the way their set up from factory for rally. this can be fixed with rear end links and sway bar. evo is always split 50:50 front to back but can lock up the front or back of the ACD leaving you to get basically 100:0 front to back if the car needs it but that would be very rare. the reason i say it becomes 100:0 but is always 50:50 is because you get 100:0 of 100% of the rear/front power (whatever isn't being locked) but the other side isn't getting any power. where as the sti can only bias power 15% difference front to back. No its all-time AWD. it has a planetary front diff where the sti only has a LSD. The sti has a tank proof torsen rear diff where the evos is arguably the most advanced rear diff on a production car today being active with AYC which splits torque left/right btwn the rear tires. the evos AWD is WAAAAAYYYYY better then the stis. here is a forum link of sti guys admitting it. forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2348045
tarmac, gravel, snow, should be labelled low medium and high. it only tells you how much the ACD slips before it locks up.
@Myleslindsey That's pretty normal for a stock RA. Now you can do the whole tuning fun :) .
@johnnyr25 no they are saying evo x as in the roman numeral for ten
@justLOVE02 Not quite. The RA has a tiny turbo and IC, restrictive exhaust, skinny 215 tires, steel chassis instead of aluminum and a much softer suspension. You would have to replace all that before you brought it up to an STI standard. That said, the RA takes to tuning VERY well. My RA after a change in air filter and tune job is not at 240 WHP...or about what a stock STI runs...but I need better breathing to widen my power band and improve handling before i compete with STI/EVOs.
stock does high 14sec if you do proper launch tapping at around 3k rpm
Man all these haters, I thought it was an interesting comparison, fully loaded versus pure performance; its a good point of consideration IMO. And its cool to see how the ralliart compared to the STi on the drag, but you guys should have tested both on the circuit and showed the results on the same vid.
@Vinnygil Just uploaded. Give UA-cam time to transcode (usually about 30 mins after upload)
Here in Canada, our Ralliart comes with the spoiler :)
@drivingsports South Coast Mitsubishi. If you check a few forums, you can see that their prices are even lower than listed on the website.
@burkejon The 911 is really named "911". The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is often called the X... it is not actually named "X." Do you see the difference there? That's why I say it doesn't matter. Calling it the "X" is street lingo and as I've traveled to events around the country I have heard owners refer to it both ways. Granted, "ten" is more common, but the fact is that neither are the actual name of the car. It's simply the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.
The Ralliart really doesnt have any lag. I think the feeling of turbo lag was coming from the ASC kicking in. ASC should have been turned off....
@aznrule191 Opps, math error, the total for the RA should be 2 grand for engine mods...not 1.5. Course the RA should have sway bars, lowring springs and wider wheels and tires to go with that extra power. Also better brakes. That is another 1.5 grand so the total is 3.5 grand or so. The WRX will also likewise need various handling modifications done before you can up the power much. So that part is kind of a wash...even though the WRX will need more done to get it to handle properly.
When I first saw the title, I thought you guys got drunk at a holiday party.
Thankfully not, as you justified that a fully loaded Lancer Ralliart in terms of price is comparable to a base model STI. Not the best excuse, but is still a valid point.
However, I would like to see a WRX vs Ralliart, Evo vs STI comparisons.
But most of all, I'm most excited about the future STI vs STI comparison.
@TheJerodMayo Nope. The car is near impossible to launch well.
I have a 2013 mitsubishi lancer ralliart, and that thing is a neck breaker 😊. Well, I did a few things to it. I love driving that thing. Style and speed all in one 📦.
How come nobody does semi-launch control for Railliart??
it makes huge difference in 0-100...
@DZoneTV The idea is to give viewers a good idea of the interior while driving (so you can see shifter, leg motion and wheel). As for the launching... the car is very lethargic off the line.
@vspec20026 We can't compare the two? We just did.
In anycase, I did orginally say that the WRX was the better car hand down stock right? I don't agree that both are good choices however. I think that the WRX is hand down the superior choice if your gonna leave your car stock or do some light modifications. The RA is the better choice for moderate modifications and both are horrible if your looking to make sub 10 second cars (starts with an EVO or STI if that is your goal...or better yet a 5.0 mustang).
I feel Happy running into this Early day Gem video.
I thought I’d ran out of content to watch haha.
I really like my ralliart. I also found out yesterday it had S-sport built in 🤭
@Pe3NuT One thing I want to see is the new Boss Mustang 2012, since it's supposed to be out during Spring.
PLEASE do a STI vs non-widebody WRX feature, please.
@drivingsports yeah i thought she said does it have a 6speed transmission but going back she said twin clutch. I'd still be feeling nervous dumping the clutch at the right rpm in a WRX unlike the STi
@burkejon You missed the point entirely.
I worked at a dealership that sold both Mitsus and Subarus. Having driven the Ralliart, EVO, WRX and STI on a regular basis I would buy the STI over any of them. The Ralliart was built to compete with the WRX and not the STI. Although the RA is a much better value than the WRX it just doesnt compete with it right off the lot. I like the TC-SST and the Rockford Fosgate system in the Mitsus alot, but not enough to buy the whole car.
STI vs EVO X.
WRX vs Ralliart.
base EVO X GSR is 33K, just like base STI.
WRX with all the options cost 33K.
I think the in car camera should've been moved a little bit closer to Jess. That, and she needs to work on her launches.
Honestly, this comparison is really not as bad as what most people are saying. They are comparing the two cars based on whether you want performance or luxury features keeping price in mind...and yes compared to the subies gear box the twin clutch tranny is a luxury.
Dude got me with "badass Wing"
Lets break that down going with low end pice point. Cat back, 750. HFC 300. Downpipe 300. IC 800. IC pipes 400. Intake 100. That breaks your 2 grand BEFORE your stage 2 or 3 tune job. Yes a stage 3 with everythin you mentioned will get you in 12s...but that is 4 grand. The RA, evox FMIC and pipes 500, TB UR exhaust 1200, intake 100 and GST free tune and you have UNDER 2 grand of mods that gets you 12s. What dyn gave you a 30 WHP read from a tune jobe? Dynojet I am guessing.
@ColdNapalm42 Do you implie that a RA with EVO turbo would take off better? I know there is different turbo in the EVO.
Does anyone know what kind of trunk that is at 0:57? I really want to go wingless with my RA but if I can get that trunk lip I think that it would look AMAZING!
@greentea868 I agree but unfortunately the average person doesn't. A lot of models have gone away from stick because they built them and people didn't buy them. It does suck though that the ralliart is one of many cars like say the SRT8 Charger you cant get stick.
The thing about both of these cars is that there made for people who like to speed, people like that don't care about gps an leather seats, most people have smart phones for gps anyways,i'd choose the STI
@drivingsports what??? south coast mitsubishi (the largest evo dealer in the states) was selling all of their base EVO's for like 30k
@ColdNapalm42
no watch 4:42 he just slams the gas pedal instead of Torque load launch (brake+gas then release brake at 3000rpm).
@XenoRacing That was an STI. The 5 speed in the WRX isn't bad. It's been improved several times since the bugeye EJ20T era.
@Pe3NuT I bought a Evo X GSR 2010 w/ SSS Package + Aero Kit ($4k+ in options) for $32k, pretty much same price as the GT. My current Evo makes the 1/4s in mid 12's w/ bolt-ons + worn tires. Last time I raced my friend's 2010 GT with bolt-ons, he ended up in high 13s. Ford GT's are still using ancient technology for their suspension? My friend has a hard time going through highway exits at high speeds with his rear live axles. Evo X GSRs pulls .99g on the skippad stock.
@PCToolsWikidotcom i think theyre comparing prices
Should be easy if you hold down the brake and the throttle like launch control.
The ralliart is a good contender in being my next car, but why are cars so much more expensive here in Europe ?!
I'd get the lancer ralliart. I'm getting one in june.
Why is this even on youtube? You're coming a ralliart to an STI ?? why not compare the Ralliart to the WRX or the EVO to the STI? You're meant to compare cares of the same league.. This is just so ridiculous
because of the price of ralliart. still buying ralliart, die hard mitsu fan
Ralliart didn't even come with a spoiler/wing?
Oh yea i must of missed the episode when you compaired the $27,000 fuly loaded hybrid civic to the $26,000 wrx base.
@aznrule191 No mods don't really work both ways. Mods increases performance in some cars more then others. Some cars are easier to tune then others. The WRX can shine a bit more yes...but the RA shines a LOT more. You could stick on 225 just fine in the old RA and 245 with the wider stance is fine now. Okay okay with a fair bit of careful wheel selection anyways. The TCCS isn't what makes an EVO and EVO unless you think all the EVO before 10 weren't real EVOs.
ralli art is still front wheel drive right?
I'd pick the Subaru
i would get the sti in a heart beat for sure since i have the evo anyways but why would you compare a RA to a STi instead of the new WRX?
Acceleration order of top 5 compacts: EvoX, STi, Wrx, Ralliart, Mazdaspeed, GolfR...
Between these two models, I would have to say the Subaru, but personally, I would much rather take an older model STI or EVO.
i pick the Subaru STI base model i just love the STi with it i live with speed and performance
Could you guys test drive the 2010 MAZDASPEED3 ? It's a good car that competes well vs the WRX & Lancer ralliart!!
I have 2010 Lancer, great car. even with 1.8L 145HP engine. So, I choose the MItsu!
the impreza by far.speed is more important than anything on an evo.and a cool wing like that is well more important than the boring evo.
@AdrianosFidi But Jackie Chan almost always drives Mitsubishi!
It would be more fair to compare the Ralliart to the non-STI WRX.
ealli art is still front wheel drive right?
....why are they testing the ralliart against an STI...? why not the wrx? or Evo vs STI? I kinda feel like slapping whoever organized this shoot. If they wanted to price compare, they can do that on paper.
@PCToolsWikidotcom I have never seen an EVO on a dealer lot for that price. Yes, that's where list price starts, but here on the west coast the ones you can really buy are significantly more expensive. (I have to assume there are exceptions out there, but haven't personally fund any.)
odd, my slightly modded ralliart does the 1/4 mile in 14.3 with no launch...
I have a 2009 wrx and would not even think about trading it for a ralliart. Maybe an evo x. However the new sti sedan looks bada**!
whats the price on that base sti? i paid 32500$ for my 2012 evo x grs..
Lol, I got my 2010 Evo X GSR brand new with SSS Package + Aero Kit for $32k, MSRP's $40k. And you can find used Evo X 08's for the cost of a brand new Ralliart. The 08's speaking towards the MR (DCT), since Ralliarts don't come in stick shift.
Ralliart's still a mushy car, imo. And doing turbo swap's going to cost a lot, 'cause it's not only the turbo you have to replace.
Not really since their ONLY stance was that a fully optioned out RA costs about the same the same as a absolute bare bone stock STI (which is about the same as an absolutely bare bone GSR). Not that even that stance was even remotely a legitmate one mind you.
@MOSS4PRESIDENT You mean the 2.0T with it's ~200 HP vs the RA and WRX...hell no. The V6 against the EVO and STI also gets ripped apart. Course the huyndais are cheaper so that counts for something.
2:03 "are you ready to go down" i bet she is
@Corinthum Nope. The EVO TCU has a launch control on top of the super sport setting. What lets the EVO launch better is the launch control...so unless you get the EVO TCU into the RA's tranny, the twin turbo won't help much...in fact it'll be worse at that start because the twin turbo actually takes a bit longer to spool then ralliarts toy turbo. Course once spooled, the twin will just launch you into light speed ;) .
14.3 is a standard 1/4 mile time for the STI because of the close ratio 6-speed tranny. The WRX is definitely faster in the 1/4 mile because of that reason. I used to have a 2011 prior to my 2011 STI. On paper one might be quick to say the WRX is a faster car and rightfully so considering the 1/4 time. However, on a race track or winding back road the STI pulls away.
just bought a ralli art testerday...love it :)
good video.
I like the show...nice camera work...you're being yourselves, and not trying to show off...
But I don't know...it would have made much more sense if the Ralliart was compared to the WRX
The launch in the Ralliart was terribad. I guess she was still peeling potatoes when the count down began.
@drivingsports
I have an 09 wrx. Ran a low 14 first time on the drag stock. And wet tarmac shouldnt matter that much these cars are awd not rwd...
Except that when you factor in mitsu's factory deals, the WRX and RA generally come out on even footing. And when you tune them, the RA gets a HUGE jump while the WRX does not. In fact, with about 2 grand in mods and a tune, the RA can run 12s while the same mods only shaves like 2/10th off on a WRX. The WRX handles better stock, but the RA once again wins ones you starts to modify. RA is better for tuning and modification...WRX wins hands down stock.
@ColdNapalm42 and taking the gsr (which is cheaper yes) takes away the TC trans which takes away one of the main things that makes the evo(in my opinion) far greater than the sti. so 37 grand is worth it, but if you are talking about saving money all i'm saying is it's not worth it to buy a small tire plagued ralliart when you can get a wrx for cheaper and not have to change the tires and maybe the wheels and if you want anything bigger than 215's you will need to do some fender rolling.
@drivingsports agreed, the launch like u-haul vans! haha
@peanutboy3 Ralliart is difficult to launch from standing still. I guess its the twin clutch tranny that aint good enough?
i would take performance over all that other stuff
Why auto vs manual? not a fair race
Umm..... That's not a fully loaded Ralliart at all... And did they remove the wing or something? Because that's standard.
Colton VanDeVoord They did not present the one in the video as being fully loaded, they just said what the price/options would be for one vs. the Subaru :)
Touring has a duck bill
