Driving Sports TV - 2009 Mitsubishi Ralliart Snow Test
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 жов 2024
- A look at the 2009 Lancer Ralliart, then off to the mountains to test the three differential settings in winter conditions. How much of a difference does the tricky center diffential make?
A note on the conditions: This was a snow park at high altitude. The ground was frozen and even when some of the snow was wiped off, it was excessively icy underneath. In some areas, complete ice.

Keep in mind... unless they put new tires on the car, the Ralliart comes with Yokohama ADVANs, which are SUMMER tires, they're not made for snow or really wet weather. The car would have performed much better with all season tires.
Unfortunately, no, we don't get paid for comments. That would be awesome, though. Keep them coming!
Ryan drove the Alcan 5000 and the Thunderbird Snow Rallies up in Canada. What's your point?
I have owned a 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart Sedan 4dr
for 15 years and absolutely love it. Very reliable and lots of oomph with the turbo. Never used the tiptronic though (just an old lady driver)
That was hands down some of the worst driving I've ever seen. However, this was a very well put together video, and I liked the testing strategy. Keep it up!
Unfortunately Mikka wasn't available. (you realize Mikka placed only 30th over in an Arctic rally, right? If you're going to make random suggestions at least pick a guy with some real snow cred, like Henning Solberg.)
From the "all I know about driving I learned by watching the Fast and the Furious" school of driving. Rock on, brother!
Do you like torque steer with wrong wheel drive or did you put those arrows in the4 wrong direction. Because i'm pretty sure the shitsubishi ralliart is not better than a WRX
Thanks for all the comments. Keep them coming!
Yes, we also got the car, the field, the host, the cones the timing equipment and the voice overs from the latest iLife pack -- isn't technology great?
Did you turn the electronic stability control off? I'd be interested to see how it handled those corners with it on.
There are comments at the end of the video regarding the conditions. I would suggest watching the whole clip before posting comments.
At press events we receive all sorts of swag. It was freezing and the DC Arctic coat from a previous Subaru event was the most appropriate attire in the conditions.
It doesn't change the torque split, only the ACD's locking time.
Jeremy would probably say, "wow, he put together a show like that on zero budget? Andy, get my agent on the phone, we need to hire this guy..."
they soften the suspension because the snow have a less friction, they reduce the ability to become rwd so the evo won't oversteer that much (by adjusting the clutch in corners).
He is wearing a sti jacket while driving a lancer and where did he learn to drive?
I like how you had to redo the snow test just because it wasnt what you expected it to be...kinda screws the whole purpose of the test. why didnt you redo the tarmac or gravol runs? oh and take off the sti jacket. thx bbg
you dont rip the e-brake with a 4-wd or rear wheel bias car in snow to get a slide going just pump the gas and it gets you through faster
... will you choose a car that drives you (mad) or car that you drive (and need to find out how)
The cloth Recaro's were listed as a separate line item on our cars configuration sheet. We're not making this stuff up.
have you considered that the ebrake pulling was a part of the test? To be comprehensive, you have to test all the possible situations. Also he says that the ebrake being pulled was because there was a sheet of ice there.
and I'm also saving 500 dollars a year on insurance. Maybe someday I'll get the new Evo when it comes out in a year or two- after I've finished college or Mitsubishi gives the car some trunk space...
lol! great review guyz. Ralliart ftw!
Stock tires again?
why are you pulling the hand brake to turn?
What's the point of comparing times like that without a professional driver? The results are essentially random since the guy is just floundering around the course and pulling the handbrake. I'm not trying to be mean; your average driver would probably achieve similar results. I just don't think this test proves anything unless you're running it with a driver experienced with these conditions.
are those the stock tires?
@Slice1211 We're sending Ryan to learn how to really drive on ice from a WRC ice driving intructor later this month. Watch for the expisode! Thanks for your comments.
oh sorry the first rply is wrong, (i thougt this is a 4wd evo it's just a fwd raliart). because the raliart is fwd it only adjust the suspension depending on situation, in snow it kind put more grip on front (because the raliart tends to understeer more in snow).
Yes, the internals of the diff are different between the Ralliart and the X, but the controls are essentially the same. We probably should have been more accurate about that.
If u pull the handbrake/e-brake, u stop the centre diff having any effect. So you cant reali test the difference between the settings if you use it.
Why not? It it somehow against your principals to have some fun in the snow? Does it go against all you hold dear and love. Or are you afraid someone will think you don't know how to drive because you've did an unscientific approach to a specific corner? Oh, the horror.
@birdflyinrealhigh You're taking this video pretty seriously. Check out the other DSTV videos, you'll see that you're jousting a windmill here... or, something.
he's driving on gravel mixed with some snow, that is not what I call testing it on snow..
Great Comments. Let's see some more!
Maybe, but we're unqualified to work at Starbucks, so you're stuck with us.
I see where you went wrong. The LEATHER Recaro's are a seperate list item. But the Cloth one's are standard. It's all good
@von8891 A DC Alpine jacket that we got from a Subaru STI press event, fwiw.
i read somwhere that the ralliart has the evo ix awd system and is missing the yaw control of the evo x
Even though the WRX has stiffer suspension and more power for 2009, it doesn't change the fact it STILL only has an open front differential! I swear the biggest problems with the WRX are lack of front lsd, and terrible terrible gear ratios... Props to mitsubishi for putting a proper drivetrain into their cheaper model ralliart
it depends on how the driver goes along with those modes. and the road is driven twice until snow mode
Love the STi jacket...
I have one like this Ralliart in the Philippines and I love it.
Or for that price you could pick up a low milage 07-08 STi & call it a day... lol.
Because, like you, I am quite capable of commenting on the interwebs.
Quite the scientific test. Logic of the test: "I want the snow mode time to be the fastest, so I'll keep testing it until that's the best time." What a horrible test.
Cheper than the evo but is high cost to maintain :( 93 gas require, transmission fluid not cheap and insurance is high. Good car over all but think about it
Fortunately "testing" is not as rigorously a defined concept, as is "scientifically testing" But don't be disappointed if we only view this video as guys playing with a car rather than deriving any meaningful data from their escapades.
Many people say the fuel economy is just same as EVO.
what happen to the old fashion manual? ='(
I think that is a good challenge, and something we might see
When in snow you get more torque in the rear not front
john hostler no it's the front
Keep those comments coming! Oh, and be sure to check out our other videos. (on the right)
Last I checked you didn't need to write a special test to drive a Mitsubishi.
can't believe the driver actually thinks this is a fair trial.
the settings are mend to give the car the most possible traction, while this driver is pulling the E-brake to reduce rear traction. wheres the logic ???
???? What is he doing? if you just drive it in a circle w/o the handbrake it could be 3 seconds faster.
@lchivy Should have got a FINN to drive on the "snow".
That was NOT SNOW!!!
I bet the engineers at mitsubishi have made the setting the way that gravel would have been faster in those conditions, if there would have been more consistent input from the driver.
Everything is debatable, you like what you like and i like what i like..... I know by the other video you watched and commented on not everyone agrees with you...
so face it, you can say mitsu is better than subaru until you turn blue (like the sky), there are people like me who will always say;
Subaru > Mitsubishi.
the ralliart has a evo9 awd and center diff not a evo x
you need to test both the cars and a longer track
and also it use alot of fuel above 3,000rpm so the ralliart is like 80% of the evo for less money and also use less fuel
what the hell, that snow is very loose, and theres dirt right underneath it -.-
I have the Ralliart and it kicks ass. I got it because the Evo has the shittiest trunk space ever. Seriously I can't even put my college stuff in there.. what's up with that lol.
It's easy to be a professional driver when you're behind a keyboard isn't it.... Give the guy a damn break, I know how bad snow-covered ice can be, especially when you're driving in a spirited manner -- the E-brake to negotiate that icy section was absolutely necessary.
THP?
Actually, no, driving cars does not require any talent. Anyone with a pulse can get a license, so your facts are a bit off.
Lighten up, it's not an instructional video.
It was explained at the end, if you saw it.
I hate to hate on the driver, but he really seemed to have very little control over the vehicle. And pulling the e-brake was about the dumbest thing you ever could have done there.
The ralliart has been tested by many car magazines and is considered lesser than the WRX
OMG why does he need a E-brake on 30kmh!?
Hey your ripping off the music from The Totally Rad Show.
He seems pretty biased. I'd rather get car reviews from a more neutral perspective, rather than an advertisement. Oh well, here's your comment. What do you get for each? 15 cents?
love the wrx
only thing i have to say is. i am an evo man. but i love the 05STI. i drove a 2008sti and they are great. better imo. but i could loose the wagon shape. just not sporty enough. and if it had the dual clutch in it it would be the best sports car on the road. under 38k. but you cant have it all.
I like how he's wearing an STI jacket :P
the reason why i have a dodge srt 4 is be cause it's 5 speed ..why are car company not making more manualy
A very bad attempt to compare the different Lancer road settings.
that looks like fun!
he mean between the wrx and the market not de sti its not the same thing....
wrx never got competition on is range of prices....
@drivingsports
.. he misspelled on purpose, the way I see it
Who hired him? Wrong question...
Who gave him the driver licence?!?
Top Gear and Fifth Gear rulllllzzz!!!
Rock on for one can only improve with practice. Drive the car do not let the car drive you.
wow you'd think he had never driven in snow before
If you want a good car review watch Top Gear, there is nothing better!
@birdflyinrealhigh Watch the "Subaru Ice Driving" video above and pay close attention.
How can you think that snow mode should be the better mode??? There is like 5cm of snow on a muddy ground. That make no sence at all. And i forgot, poor driving.
...drop the transmission, haha :-D Anyway, I think you should practice a bit this kind of driving ;-) Not that I would be better... But what I'm really wondering about is the price, for $30.000 you barely get this car as a basic model here in europe :-(
this narrator sounds like the macworld video guy nick barber.
I just saw a commercial for an STI :)
perfect car
this is an Anti Mitsubishi project.
end of the story. Can't belive subaru has to go through this.
top gear pls
THP stands for Turbo high pressure
he's wearing a jacket with a STi logo on it
30 freaking grand?! Its at least 45 grand in AUSTRALIA >< =(
I don't understand this video.
Why did not they ask a man to make this test who can drive a car ?
( for example Tommi Makkinen or Gigi Galli )
This guy was a cripple ( not little ) !
The guy can't drive but the lancer looks great
I would love to see this guy try to drive a rwd car...in canada... in some real snow, it would be a total fail lol
the guy on the right was completely useless by the end
I have a white 2009 mitsubishi ralliart double clutch turbo and I love it. Check my FB under Mitsubishi Rallliart Turbo.
