Glad you went with the studio version. Alot of versions cut the verse starting with 'like a dog lying in the corner' which has some of the best most biting lyrics of the whole song.

You are spot on. It's the crux of the song in my mind... it's biting and nasty.. and I have a suspicion that's why it's excised from the video...too real.

I love the build up of disdain in the lyrics and tone in this. It starts with an element of humour but changes throughout the song to a tone of scorn.

It's always so interesting to see this particular Pulp song, so 90s and British in so many ways, still has resonance not just here in the UK, but right across the globe. The album it came from - Different Class - is all about the peculiarities of the British class system, but in reality the same disparities and deep, dark resentments occur in similar ways in every other country. It's so British in its references, and yet so universal because income gaps and the expectations (or lack thereof) of life that comes with them are the same everywhere. We all seem to have the struggling classes for whom nothing is ever certain, and the clueless wealthy types who like to slum for fun, and 'will never understand' the true experience of being poor and extremely limited in your options, or the deep well of resentment it causes.

What I really love about this track is how the instrumental side of things is basically the same the whole song - except it becomes more and more aggressive. Far too many tracks get labelled as 'anthemic', but this really does deserve that accolade.

Random fact - St Martin's College (which Jarvis Cocker really did attend) was the venue for the first ever Sex Pistols gig. I'm always reminded of this song in places like Cambodia and Vietnam, where you often have these backpackers claiming they are "living like a local", eating in cheap places because it's a good instagram opportunity and they can enjoy playing at being a poor person - not realising for one second that the locals would love to eat in those expensive restaurant etc, that they shun.

Commenting because you deserve more views if your reviews are like this, if this is your style. It was, as your channel name suggests, an actual review. I have seen a few 'reactions' to this particular song recently but yours is the only one that seemed to actually go into things more and actually discuss the song. It seems many reaction channels just watch a video but they don't add anything, let alone anything meaningful, or insightful, or that provides opportunity for discourse. It seems that "yeah, I like that, ok, next" is about as much feedback as some channels provide.
You definitely seem to have grasped the song, which is a fantastic and biting piece of social commentary on the class system, that I believe holds true today as much as ever, and in that sense this track does feel timeless, 25 years later and it is pertinent as ever. I like how the song builds as it does, with the increasing feeling of contempt or disdain at first creeping into Jarvis Cocker's voice and by the end almost spat, that harsh bitter truth.
Glad you chose this version as I think the official video for whatever reason leaves out that whole verse about like a dog in the corner.
This song is indeed very popular, at least here in UK, but I don't think Pulp ever really became big overseas, not in N America I don't think. Which is a shame as they have some great songs.
I will check out some of your other videos, if they are like this in style and presentation it should be some good watching

Superb review of the correct extended version of the song. Did not interrupt the song at any point all the way through. Thank you. This song is the anthem of the British common people. All about class tourism, and how these wealthy idiots from a privileged background can never know what it is actually like to be a common person because they never experience the trials, tribulations, and struggle that common people suffer throughout their lives. Common people have no escape plan, no way out.

One of my favourite bands from the 90's. Seen them live a few times and they were brilliant, Jarvis was such a great performer. Their first big album "His n Hers" has some really good tracks...Babies for one. They tended to cover working class and very down to earth subjects. Similar to the Arctic Monkey's who are also from Sheffield!

It is a scathing take down of the British class system and the utter hopelessness of the working class, being used by the middle class and upper class for tourism. Ironically Pulp are lumped in with the ‘Brit pop’ era but there is a subtle hint here, the video mimics Blur’s ‘Parklife’ and for a reason, Blur were middle class southerners, Jarvis and Pulp grew up in working class northern England. When you read between the lines you can see that Jarvis was pointing out that Blur were also tourists.

When MJs security locked him in a room, comedian Bob Mortimer (a solicitor before moving to comedy) managed to get to see Jarvis acting as his legal counsel.
He asked "what's happened?" expecting to hear how Jarvis had assaulted MJ.
Jarvis just said "I showed Michael my bottom."

You must be very young or very old if you can't remember Pulp being part of Britpop. Too many, they WERE Britpop.

And so many other great bands: Human League, Heaven 17, Richard Hawley, Def Leopard to name but a few. Sheffield's contribution to the UK music scene is imo one the UKs most under publicised treasures.

@@rw4956 Absolutely agree. I didn't mean to neglect all those bands. I'll throw in Joe Cocker and ABC for good measure (lol), but this site seems to have reacted to a lot of the AM's stuff.
I attended Sheffield Uni' and I loved the music scene. At the students union. The local pubs. down at the Lead mill and the raves in the abandoned industrial units. Absolutely loved it.
