yep and there really is no wrong way. As long you think it looks good is all that matters honestly. Just takes time I painted my first today and already learned like 9 things i did wrong
Hey John, I wanted to give you a tip on brush control when it comes to larger scale things. I’ve been a canvas and Moral Painter for many years and although my Instagram might not share a lot of that work, since I’ve gotten into miniatures I might have some insight that could help. You brought up Bob Ross right after you had talked about the lack of brush control. He is a perfect example. If you ever watch a Bob Ross video look where he’s holding the paintbrush. There are a lot of occasions where when he is painting something he is holding the brush further back almost all the way to the end. You see this technique in a lot of oil, canvas painters. On certain mediums, this will actually help create Fluid brushstrokes. This isn’t the case for every situation, but I think it will be something fun to experiment with in the future when it comes to larger scale, things like this. I hope this information helps.
The theme of not overthinking the paint job is just what I needed to hear, I’ve been bogged down in a project and definitely overthinking it. I love your work and videos!
I had to go back to your oldest videos to compare where you started from. You were a good painter back then, but this is magnificent. All of your choices seem right and they are executed perfectly.
Man, what a great result! Just having fun while painting it's why we all started doing this! It's hard to remember sometimes with all the social media pressure to always do great work... but more often than not, if you just paint to enjoy it, the good results will come by itself.
Fkn hell man! Looks spot on. Actually better for us the audience to see how you blend and mess around with your paint with it being so big. Great edit to. 👍
Very impressive! I love those snot-gore effects. This also makes me want to send you one of the large, unpainted McFarlane Space Marine or Necron figures to see what you would do with that.
Awesome job, as usual! What I love about your videos isn't necessarily the technical aspects of painting (although always appreciated), but the thought processes and mindset you have while painting a miniature or army. Sometimes knowing how to get out of your own headspace is the best tool one could have!
Excellent, I didn’t think much of the model until the paint started, well done, you’ve really levelled up this last year, glad to see you’re FDM printing at last too.
Think this is my favourite video you've ever done. I've always been too worried about perfection but I'm just gonna Yolo my miniatures, worst case I can just strip and start again, it's all part of becoming better! Titus model looks amazing.
New approach for my next mini... play this video on repeat throughout painting to remind myself to have fun and not let details and perfectionism take it away. I'm so bad with enjoying painting and having fun which is ruining the whole experience for me. So, I hope that I get enough courage to "blindly stumble" into my next project and have fun :) Great result! Also, googly eyes make everything better. I love that intro!
I usually don't like complimenting by comparison, but man it is crazy how much more life and vibrancy your approach brought into this model than even someone like the master Sergio Calvo!
This is a timely video. I finished my first old world unit after I got boggled down with details etc and then just decided to roll with it and it came out beautiful
Thank you for this, watching your videos and theories around colour and painting has inspired and given me the cinfidence to take the plunge and enter golden demon myself so thank you for your videos 😊
Daaaaaaaaammn, that came together nice! I'm getting the impression from more than one source that perhaps I stress about the details too much. Perhaps I need to be a little braver, and try loosening up.
Looks great Jon, wonder how using oils for highlights into shadows for a more smooth blend would look. But either way you did a fantastic job painting a scale you don't have much experience with
Everything I watch one of touch videos, I a. Amazed how far the talent has progressed. This was EASILY, a GD back when I last attended a Games Day. Now, it's a barely a tutorial 😢
Super cool! It came out great! The only thing that stands out to me is that the slobber and gore stands out a bit having been done after your tinting. Particularly the slobber; it does not appear to be in the same lighting as the rest of the model, and doesn't look like a part of the scene
man, large scale stuff is so much easier in some ways - normal minis I always try to squeeze what I do on larger stuff into a smaller pallet... big stuff seems to paint faster and is just easier in some ways. Either way - BEAUTIFUL work on that piece! I'm envious you got one of those!!!
Now this was you just painting for a video and you weren't even trying hard I wonder what this would look like if you would actually put 100% of your effort into it and not just for video. You are awesome as always. I'm glad you had fun with painting this bigature.
Polymakwr polyterra PLA is amazing filament to use for making terrain and I uave found that the polyterra PLA takes less prep for painting then other brands of pla and have tried.
Why no dirt/gore on his armour? Strikes me as a bit jarring that he's standing in a pool of blood yet his armor is pristine, especially given that his sword has gore on it.
Very cool. I bought a similar model off eBay in 2020. An Ultramarine holding a flag while blasting a nice in the face. 55mm scale though so not enormous like this one.
What, the introduction? This was posted less than 1 minute after the 18-minute video was posted. Unless you've discovered an 18x viewing speed hidden in UA-cam...
@@SamBrownBaudot Yeah! Of course i mean the introduction, those letters at the begining are out of this world!!!! And by the way, you can skip to the end to see the result, so you don't need to watch the whole video to see how good the paint job is! :D
Hey @Ninjon, I'm sure you already know this but I found out fdm printers create a TON of micro plastic fibers that get over and into EVERYTHING from doing some resin and fdm printer comparison research. Allot of folks tend to overlook this part of printing with fdm printers, you can't ever get rid of these micro plastic fibers while the fumes from resin can dissipate if I'm remembering everything correctly. I know you have some pets that you let into your hobby space, so I just thought I'd mention it.
Raw PLA and PETG are pretty benign as long as you have HEPA-ish air filtration / circulation. Glass fiber (GF) and carbon fiber (CF) fillers might be what you're thinking of. It does seem like those fibers get everywhere and I would not use GF/CF filament in hobbyist context. I'd take PLA/PETG over resin fumes printing in my house any day though.
One thing I appreciate about your videos is that they give me the confidence to blindly stumble into my own painting and modeling journey.
You are right I found his videos and was like I can paint a 100 dollar figure and not mess it up
yep and there really is no wrong way. As long you think it looks good is all that matters honestly. Just takes time I painted my first today and already learned like 9 things i did wrong

True. If you think too much you can convince yourself to not do something you really want to do.
Dude, you make it seem so easy to paint. Unbelievable art. You need a slayer sword, go win one. You're a natural
a natural with a hell of a lot of practice and experience
I’ll make you one!
I had to go back to your oldest videos to compare where you started from. You were a good painter back then, but this is magnificent. All of your choices seem right and they are executed perfectly.
I don’t think there’s a painter on UA-cam with the same progress Jon’s made since he started
As absolutely awesome as that work is, and it truly is, I can't get over that Dirty Down snot and gore! Can't wait to buy those.
Good thing you got those socks instead of the N64. They came in clutch!
Man, what a great result!
Just having fun while painting it's why we all started doing this! It's hard to remember sometimes with all the social media pressure to always do great work... but more often than not, if you just paint to enjoy it, the good results will come by itself.
INCREDIBLE!!!!! I am FIRST in line if he sells this. I'd buy it and display it behind glass for all my 40K folks!!!! UNREAL.

End result was gorgeous. Thanks for leading the charge in blindly stumbling into new techniques and making them look like that!
Maybe your local GW store would window display it for a temp amount of time. I'd sure love to see it in the window
That looks so freaking good. Great job sir.

I always love seeing your fearless use of color. It really.makes for some unique pieces!
This looks so amazing. I will definitely try this technique ❤
That´s a really beautifully painted model Jon. I´m bowing to your skills... Keep up the good work.
Love the look of it Ninjon. You always impress me. I will stumble into my own current project with less trepidation.

Your Bob Ross explanation at 5:00 hits HARD and I love it so much. Should be mandatory listening for all aspiring painters.
Great to see you got an unpainted one to establish your own style with it. Now you have areally unique piece. Nice work!
Wonderfully magnificent! Love the sculpture.
Looks magnificent.
I usually don't like complimenting by comparison, but man it is crazy how much more life and vibrancy your approach brought into this model than even someone like the master Sergio Calvo!
Looking sick! I would've maybe added some blood spattering on Titus and the nid itself together with the gore, but otherwise, looking good!
This looks SOOOO impressive. Nice job, Jon!
Very Sergio Calvo style in approach and outcome, like it!
This is absolutely beautiful work! 100/10 man as always!
Looks great, one of the better ones I've seen painted.
You outdid yourself with this piece. It's real art. Bravo
This is a timely video. I finished my first old world unit after I got boggled down with details etc and then just decided to roll with it and it came out beautiful
You're yhe second painter I've watched doing one.
And I love your take on it
I think this might be your best work yet. It's astonishing.
Thank you for this, watching your videos and theories around colour and painting has inspired and given me the cinfidence to take the plunge and enter golden demon myself so thank you for your videos 😊
This is amazing. Best large scale miniature. Love your Bob Ross approach.
Aw man, I really liked it before the last ink/contrast layers of yellow/magenta/blue(?) It looked so clean!
Amazing work as normal!!! This has to be the best looking statue out there!!
Amazing and inspiring. Thank you!
Jon you're my favorite painter to follow. You fuckin rule dude.
I used an old towel to work on a large piece. Also put that on a cutting mat so you can easily rotate as needed.
Fun tip. Vortex mixers are great for filling cones
As an aside, a new batch of Hexengarde buildings is about to hit Kickstarter.
Wicked paint job Jon
I need more intros with the vortex mixer like this
Absolutely stunning, well done.
Those metals look fantastic. Great tip
Daaaaaaaaammn, that came together nice!
I'm getting the impression from more than one source that perhaps I stress about the details too much. Perhaps I need to be a little braver, and try loosening up.
I was just wishing I had something similar, dug out some older paint and shook till my arms were sore, had to manually stir my liberator gold...
That is one astonishing paint job.
Please bring it to adepticon! Would be amazing to see in person. Great work as always.
Looks awesome!
Super sweet paint job
This looks amazing!

That paint job is mad 🙌 well done Jon
Wish you could enter that into Golden Demon.
Edit: 17:40 I stand corrected. :)
Wow. Awesome project!
I'm loving those SoFlats, I have most the range now in dropper bottles. :)
Lovely work man , def your best yet. Nailed it completely.
Absolutely fantastic!
Fantastic!
K. Just wanna say, you have a beautiful…backyard? Whatever that green background is while you’re priming, it’s fantastic
Nice Video. The Dirty down snot looks useful.
I’d love to see a tutorial on how you paint tutorial with the same vibrant shadows of your armies
Jon I loved the entry video
There really is something special about the optical mixing of yellows and oranges over blue.
Love the new intro music!
It looks amazing TY

Love your work man. This is super sick.
Fantastic job man!
Love this channel. Great death metal!

Loved the intro, as someone who puts googly eyes on everything I got a kick out of it.
I love your take on f*ck smoothness
I always find this kind of thing impressive becauseI could never dare try something like this.

Wow. That was awesome!
Fantastic. 👍👍
One of the best intros yet!
Jon, you killed it. Now play the game so you can get killed, over and over. Great work.
That intro 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Thank you for making my day with that intro 😅
Polymakwr polyterra PLA is amazing filament to use for making terrain and I uave found that the polyterra PLA takes less prep for painting then other brands of pla and have tried.
awesome.
I noticed I was not subbed! Loved this video and the philosophy you talked about. Now subbed ❤😊
Why no dirt/gore on his armour? Strikes me as a bit jarring that he's standing in a pool of blood yet his armor is pristine, especially given that his sword has gore on it.
It'd be great if GW would release big display models like this for each army for every new edition of the game.
Very cool. I bought a similar model off eBay in 2020. An Ultramarine holding a flag while blasting a nice in the face. 55mm scale though so not enormous like this one.

Great work, friend! Looks SO good! Love the color from purple to blue so much

why not try a gundam it might be a learning experience in its own right YOu might get some gundam hobbyist To check you out
I'm a Gunpla builder that found Jon's channel when I was looking for ways to paint my kits when I couldn't bring my airbrush with me to university
