@@terrencemiltner1005 Maybe, maybe not. GW has been doing limited runs of board games forever. However, from casual observation, they generally fall in two "tracks". My god this paint job was brilliant - yeah as you said it leans on rain slicker / fireman but that WORKS. The little touch of your thinned blue glow on the eyes SELLS the heck out of the effect and I enjoyed watching you get it there, what a fun video!
Card 290 is pretty much my Tau scheme for the past decade. I come from Adobe KULER colour tools background, so it was not random that I settled on that scheme - for the uninitiated in colour theory - those color cubes are a brilliant idea!
So how do we get you to work with them to make a miniature painting themed color cube? Art pictures that maybe ties in a little better and a box that fits in with the theme and not as "pretty" on the shelf. Also on the back of the card could include the names of the paints for a couple common brands of paint like citadel, army painter. And vallejo. Slap that up on a kickstarter and I'm in.
@Ninjon That's great news. I am really new to actually painting minis. Just started a week ago with my daughter. Having something like this would be a huge help as trying to figure out what colors to use was something that made me wait so long. Afraid to screw up. After seeing some of my choices I know I need help. Some color cobos just don't look good together. But it still looks better than grey on the table. I love this! I actually can not wait to get these cubes. I think they will help me in my painting. Not having to guess a color scheme is a great way to learn. I would like to see you paint a trio of miniatures that make a small band of adventurers. With the three using the same color scheme to see what differences can be done. Awesome as usual!
I love your stuff, the optimism and the "you can do this" keeps me from getting down on my own skill. I'd love to see you do a "Battle Ready" challenge, where you can only use 3 paints/colors to try and get a mini painted as high a standard as possible.
I ordered the two cube set, look forward to using them for my painting projects. Bonus points, my wife does quilting, I plan to share them with her to try out.
I actually have this model and have never quite liked how it turned out. Seeing how cool this color scheme looks in this video showed me that it's worth digging up and try this color scheme on. Thanks Jon!
I bought the cubes after watching the video. They have pdfs for pretty much every pencil range. I sent them a note that maybe they could make them for acrylic paints like Army Painter, monument and golden so-flatt since that would cover beginners, intermediate and advanced painters. Wonder if I get you the survey like if you could rally the troops. It's such a cool product. We just need a reference file to go with it.
That's the classic mix of primary color CMJ. Balance it in high or low contrast/lightening/ocre as you wish, , and you always have a good result on any models. That's efficient. Good result as always, clearly dude.
I think what could be fun is have a guest on and you each have to pick each others palettes for a model. Then maybe halfway switch palettes and see if the resulting models you each end up with tie into a cohesive scheme, but in each of your different styles and direction.
Great video and appreciate your willingness to paint according to a random color chart/card. I think I learned a lot and I know I always enjoy your sense of humor!! Thanks!
An idea for a colour scheme. Invert the lightest and darkest areas. So where you would normally edge highlight, that would become the darkest point. And the recesses would be the lightest areas. Almost like it glowing from within. I think it would be a cool idea for a necron.
Challenge: Pick one color scheme, paint three minis with those colors, each mini gets a different primary color emphasis. How varied would they look? Would they all still fit or would you get three completely different schemes using the same colors?
beautiful colour scheme...and amazing paintjob. Bravo Jon. That simple OSL is amazing...you could do a video about painting OSL on different levels, from this simple way to some more complex methods.
while it is not the color scheme I might have gone with, i think "leaving it up to the cube" is a really cool idea and I am glad that you are experimenting with it. I will be checking those cubes out sometime in the future as well.
Jon you are killing it with those color cubes!! Always enjoy your content. Your injection of humor into such useful information makes your videos too damn short.
I liked this video. I think the model is great and it makes me want to try more ambitious paint schemes but with a limited palette. I think if I had to critique "georgie" I would have wanted to invert the color scheme on the coat put the red out side and yellow inside. Or maybe use the yellow more as a trim color. I really enjoy his bronzed skin look. Also, thank you for the type on the cabling. I am going to try that in the near furture.
Must say, looking up close your painting style and skill improved quite a bit over the last 2-3 years. I really enjoyed the idea of the video as also the little side story. Gave me some great inspiration what to do with a little band of goblins in the future.
I love how good that skin tone looks. Whole paint job is awesome! My wife teaches art and after watching this and the last one is in love with the cubes. Thanks for the amazing video!
I tried doing skin by mixing primaries like this recently, and dang is it both more fun and really pops when it goes well. My suggestion would be painting a mini using only primaries mixed together, plus black and white, no premixed colors.
Personally I think you should incorporate the cube in all of your tutorials. The fact that you could pick a card at random and make it work, and on that model really says something.
never have I been made so accutely aware that in British English we say TYOOB whilst in American English you say TOOB. Thanks for this... it now lives rent free in my head...
I’d love more of these color cube paintings videos. Maybe more about specifically how you’re mixing and using the colors on you pallet. Awesome video. I’m kind of a new viewer. Thanks!
I really need to get these color cubes! I feel like they'd be perfect for the 4 color palettes we do every week! This looks terrific Jon. So glad to see you coming over to the minimal side of the palette!!
This was great, I love just running with a random color scheme. I have an old vengeance weapon battery that I started to paint in a blue and then decided to paint it in the old Gulf Racing Livery colors. I get a chuckle when someone is digging through my terrain and catches it.
Georgie’s story is one of the greatest openings in fiction. It’s so iconic. I love to reread just that chapter. The mix on Georgie’s rain coat really started to remind me of the texture of fabric in classical painting. It may be quick enough for you but it looks fantastic. Also… how did GW mange to cheap out just enough to make a new game but not enough for new minis that match the game it’s based on?
This mini looks great, especially as a one-off character. An entire army in this scheme would probably look like a circus, but as a hero/standalone character for a game like Darktide it's perfect.
I purchase the volume 1 color cube that I saw on your first video (Stop spending my money, John!) and I really like it. I’m using it on all my minis, and even for my 1/25 scale model cars! It’s a great tool and so worth the $40.00. They also have a downloadable version for about half the price, but I prefer the hard cards.
Should have just trusted the dark and light blue mixing together. That mixing to a 'sad' color as you described was one of the best parts. Trust the palletes
Definitely love this type of video, it shows the fun of painting and how to make the most out of so few. I would love to see some of the more brighter colors selections like on the Ogryn or the Flamethrower user Great video Jon :)
I used to do digital illustarion work back in the days and those color swatches were always a great cheat for a good piece. Never thought of applying that to minis. Great idea, must try it

This was another great one. A full colour cube series needs to happen!
Your painting has always been great but I can see a noticeable improvement in your work since your beautiful GD piece. Very nicely done man!
Jon you are killing it with those color cubes!! Always enjoy your content. Your injection of humor into such useful information makes your videos too damn short.
That came out great. I got the cubs after you last episode and started a new army using one of the color pallets. Thanks
Awesome paint job! Love the way the paint cube frees your brain up to enjoy playing around with colour mixing etc.
I really love these Color Cube paint schemes. More please, I have the popcorn maker on standby 🫡
As a father of 3 under 3... you have no idea how much your videos have saved my sanity
I would honestly watch a series of you painting the whole box using these cards!
Using a card for a Seraphon army would be awesome!!
I love watching this cube-inspired color-scheme series. That AND your panting experience feels like magic to me😱
The tip about not messing with the streaky paint and letting it dry really helped my painting
I've really enjoyed these colour scheme roulette videos, it'd be great to make these a regular thing that you put out every now and then.
Must say, looking up close your painting style and skill improved quite a bit over the last 2-3 years. I really enjoyed the idea of the video as also the little side story.
Gave me some great inspiration what to do with a little band of goblins in the future.
Red, Yellow, Blue and Psionic powers. Georgie is an X-Man
Just ordered the color cubes to inspire terrain painting schemes, and I'm glad to see how well you're able to use them for minis!
I love the Lioncloth. It works well with the whole model.
I love how good that skin tone looks. Whole paint job is awesome! My wife teaches art and after watching this and the last one is in love with the cubes. Thanks for the amazing video!
Really like how you just kept running with the lion cloth. The dedication was real
I tried doing skin by mixing primaries like this recently, and dang is it both more fun and really pops when it goes well. My suggestion would be painting a mini using only primaries mixed together, plus black and white, no premixed colors.
This is the new meta. You must conquer the cube. All X amount of cards!
Man. That thing would stand OUT on a field. I love it. DO IT AGAIN
After watching the first video, I ordered these and they just came in today! Can’t wait to try them out!
Personally I think you should incorporate the cube in all of your tutorials. The fact that you could pick a card at random and make it work, and on that model really says something.
I ordered the color cubes and they are supposed to arrive tomorrow, can't wait!
never have I been made so accutely aware that in British English we say TYOOB whilst in American English you say TOOB.
This model looks fantastic and is what I imagine to be in line with the rag-tag conscripted prisoner-like setup of Darktide.
Definitely love this type of video, it shows the fun of painting and how to make the most out of so few.
I would love to see some of the more brighter colors selections like on the Ogryn or the Flamethrower user
Great video Jon :)
I used to do digital illustarion work back in the days and those color swatches were always a great cheat for a good piece. Never thought of applying that to minis. Great idea, must try it
Ngl, these color cube videos are really inspiring me to get a bit more crazy with my choice or color.
Those cubes are a really cool idea. Good paint scheme. Would love to see more random colour cube scheme videos.
dude that looks sick i love it.... cool to see you painting yellow and showing how you do it 😁
The face looks superb and I'll certainly be using your method for painting tooobs
