- Get ready for the slow burn. Like, maybe a really really slow burn.
Caves of Qud is a colossal and colossally weird post-apocalyptic roguelike. This game has been in development for a very long time and I've been thinking about doing a series on it basically since the channel began. Now seems like a good time for a long, weird adventure, so let's get in here and try not to die before we even get to the caves.
Get it on Steam at store.steampowered.com/app/33...

I am intrigued, and now the algorithm knows.
This game gives me Cataclysm:DDA cravings, seems like fun times ahead
So... the warden is supposed to be friendly or neutral to the village. You got a corner-case of world generation where they didn't like each other.
I've been looking for a Blind Let's Play of this game. Thank you for deciding to brave this game like the fools we all are
Oh I love Caves of Qud i've played over 300 hours of it and I still find myself going back to it, whenever a new update releases. It might be a little challenging at first, but it's probably one of the best roguelikes I've ever played and I love it's unique world and the way it is written.
Is it more challenging than Nethack (to start with, not to complete)
Only 10 minutes in, and I am 100% in on this.
each map space is 9 walk-able screens in a grid, i hope this don't count as a spoiler since the game never tell you this, ever, only way to know is counting as you're running around lost.
Did not know this and just started playing so I do certainly appreciate this piece of information .
'i have a love injector?' i have no idea why but that cracked me up
This was the perfect first CoQ episode. Awesome.
This is one of my favorite roguelikes to watch and Im super excited to see you learn the systems and explore this brutal world. I'll say that your random start has in some ways set you up to have a non-representative experience with the game, as a major aspect of character building will be denied to you (mutations!) Also, you're missing a major newbie quest because of the warden slaughtering that quest NPC hahahaha.
I was not expecting you'd play this! I fell off a bunch of patches ago but I really love the worldbuilding and some of the systems in this.
14:31 haha, I had to laugh at that Freudian Slip :)
And at the description of the foldable chair.
Looking forward for more of this! Thanks!
Never seen your channel before and stumbled here from google, since I love the game. Great video, it's good fun watching someone experience the madness and confusion that is Qud. Live and Drink, SB!
Ok I literally gasped when I saw this. You just made my week SB
(I think 'Qud' is pronounced same as 'cud')
Edit: So yeah *generally* the warden and Mehmet aren't supposed to be enemies. But sometimes things get a little interesting!
i thought it was quid.
just use the acronym COQ
@@Deadpool-su2po hey hey
I wonder if you'll stumble as much at the start as I did (only way to experience a roguelike, IMO). Qud is neat and weird and I remember so little of it that this'll be an interesting experience to watch.
Maybe this series will finally enable me to play this game. It's been sitting, disused, in my library with a scant 45 mins sunk into it.
It is def a game you get more out of by putting in. Plus, there is no shame in looking up builds
@@Ekklo I don't even care for builds, I'd just like to understand how to play without having to read a huge brick of text.
@@plexim1591 space button is your friend, but other than that...
Edit:I'm learning it is hard to describe best practices in traditional RL. I have a history with them of 24 years, so I just have most of my knowledge internalized...
@@plexim1591 Being literate is a start.
Thanks so much for doing this series! I would not have been introduced to this great game otherwise, nor had the courage to get through the initial learning curve. Now I'm proud to say I just cured myself of waxflab by locking myself in a house in Joppa, eating a knollworm corpse, and spraying myself down with unctuous blood. Good times!
I like that you're not skipping anything. I love rogue-like LPs that don't skimp out on the details
What a strange world it is, where one has to explain that "rogue-like" means rogue-like.
Rather, rogue-like ala Qud
vs
roguelike ala Enter the Gungeon.
@@donbionicle pretty sure games like binding of Isaac or enter the gungeons are called rougelites
@@tongraymondtong6693 ...huh, missed that typo. Yeah that's what I meant!
This is an amazing playthrough and I am damn happy there's several videos in this playlist
Enjoyed this a lot - love me some Caves of Qud! Will have to catch up on the rest of the series now - hope you keep it up! All the best
Nice! This game is awesome and it's fun to watch you enjoying it. Looking forward to seeing where you go with the series.
Love this game. By far the most engaging world in any game I've played. Hope you stick it out through the learning curves
Awesome. I love this game. Glad to see you playing
Great vid! I’m hyped to learn the game with you SB!
Starting location being Joppa broke me in half, cause in Russian jopa (Жопа) means Ass.
Off to a great start!
lucky start getting the angry warden ahaha
This gives me so much nostalgia for back when I played Nethack.
the writing in this one seems amazing!
Nope, not too young 😁
I learned what .zip files were in 1994 when I installed NetHack for the first time...
Edit: btw, this is my favorite RL by far, so so good.
Watching you play this makes it easier for me to get in to it. This is the kind of game I'd love to love but it's kinda like reading a novel. Sometimes you gotta push a little to really get into it
This was such a cool viewing experience
I've been thinking about buying this game for ages now. I love the Ultima artstyle. Guess I'll just go for it.
Hum, this is going to be an interesting run
If only you played DF Adventure mode on here. Oh the laughs One F Jef's ancient Let's Play produced! :)
Not surprised this came to pass given the nature of the game and how long it has, judiciously, been on the development slow cooker---but still surprised the cracking to start came so relatively near* to the full release at long last. Excellent potential regardless though---very little else out there in the way of peerage on par, especially if hyper specific to the niches it occupies in the broader Roguelike spectrum.
Yeah, given that the website states that the game's full release will be this year I considered just waiting until then, but I couldn't find a specific date so I wasn't sure how long it would be. Based on the development roadmap it seems like it might be quite a while yet, though, so I figured we'd have to time to try it out and then let it rest a bit before 1.0.
@@SBPlaysGames Yeah, there's been impacts on the team both specific and Well, We're All In It variety---so at some hopeful near'ish* point in time they should clear the final hurdle then it is on to the wilds of post-release doings to sweeten the deal.
In other slow cooker peerage, though for different reasons, Axu is one of the extremely few~
I am not imaginative or patient enough for a grandaddy rogue game like this but I can sit and watch SB comment on it all day
E - love injector bit had me giggling like crazy
Also you left Steam notifications on you wild animal, ya make vids for UA-cam before????
Some starting suggestions-
Go into each room in joppa, close the door, and steal everything the chests. Then sell them to the trader. Usually worth to just buy all his ammo as well.
There's 4quests you can get in the starting village. One from the guard (what's eating the watervine), one from the inventor in the south west, one from the guy screaming around town, and one from looking at the altar in the north east. You should get them all. Doing the two knick knack challenges for the guy in the south west should instantly give you a level, and can sometimes be done from the start (especially if you loot the chests). This can make the early game a little easier.
Stick with it. Game is insanely worth it. Nothing else compares in the genre imo.
Nice, caves of qud content. Hope you check out the new patches.
I always had luck with two types of builds. Berserker, four arms, double muscle, adrenaline control, stinger socially repugnant, dump any stat that isn't str or vitality .... And turtle, shell, beak, double heart, regeneration.... I haven't played in a good long while so I don't know If these builds work out point wise .
heeeeeeellllll yeah this rules
Mutant gang
gotta have a blood skin
I put my mouse cursor over yours.
Hey, SB, is it possible that Qud is pronouced Chud, like Chad but with a U? That was my first thought of how to pronounce it. The Q being a CH sound is how we translate Chinese into our alphabet, like with the Qin (pronounced similarly to chin) dynasty. You're probably old enough to remember the movie "CHUD," (Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers), and I was thinking it was a reference to this because it has "cave" in the name, but I know nothing of this game yet.
1 hour and has not leFt the starting screen oF the game
Looks like the graphics from the first Ultima.
Dude... How is this a roguelite?
