I've used this same laptop for the past few months for work and gaming and could not agree more! Some things he did not mention, battery life is surprisingly good (6hours+ unplugged) due to the hybrid graphics (uses iGPU for less demanding apps). Also the trackpad is big and accurate. The display is very bright and as mentioned the fans are not obtrusive (thanks not only to them being less loud but also lower pitch and more proactive instead of constantly ramping up and down). Basically, this laptop has amazing performance but also great quality of life. Only thing I don't like is the HDR, it seem to be a bit off (oversaturated), needs some tuning before you can leave it on all the time.
Given the unsolved keyboard backlight issues in non-RGB models, I would actually worry about it. 😆 Shame because they look very clean and professional.
coming back to this video 1.5 years later, seeing you're still using it in more recent videos... finally thinking about upgrading my 13 yr old laptop and this is looking like a solid contender
I bought a Lenovo Legion Y740 after doing a ton of research almost a year ago and would in a heart beat buy it again at double the price and not feel bad about it! I'm able to run the majority of PC VR titles on high settings along with my 1440p monitor without any issues!
Same man! Kinda sad that this beauty is now available since I have mine like for 6 months now. Would have love to gotten the 7i, but ofcourse I'm still happy with the beast Y740
Mine do that plus two dead pixel :( but to be accurate it’s not thermal throttling it’s more of boost speed thermal throttling. The max boost speed for that CPU is 4.7 but it can’t reach that in such a small factor. Other company restrict their boost speed according to their cooling solution like razer so it would not show as thermal throttling.
Thanks for the review Jay! Was able to talk my small custom engineering company into ordering a bunch of these with nearly the same setup. Same CPU and awesome screen, just with the 2070 Super Max Q instead of the 2080. Can't imagine I'll be disappointed in the performance when working or gaming!
Jay, it makes sense to put no port on the back, because there is always that someone who tilts the laptop back while having a plug in the back of it and that sooner or later kills the port.
I always like the dicreet look of Lenovo laptops, the ports in the back is amazing. My top concern with laptops is always the cooling system but damn, they went above and beyond on this one.
The new ones are supposedly even better. It's insane 🤯. My 7 (2021) in quite mode gets great framerate and super low fan noise, with volume at like 20 I can get immersed in games without the noise breaking my focus :) . My old laptop sounded like a fighter jet so for me this is super magical.

These laptops are excellent. I had to deploy seven of them last year and have been supporting them ever since [Office IT guy]. They work well and the extra power is super handy. Definitely run better than some of the first desktops I built.
They do already, i have the one with a RTX 2060 and a Ryzen 4800H, does 4.5GHz on single core and 4.2GHz all cores RTX 2060 maxes out at 62C and 2GHz GPU clock, CPU in gaming is about 60C. Under multicore maxed out it's 80C, cost £950, or $1261. Christ the dollar has really tanked £1 = $1.32, not seen that since before Brexit and since they do £1 = 1$ for computer parts the manufactures are making 32% more profit.
Pity you wouldn't get the USB-C 10gbps/Thunderbolt options on a Ryzen, most manufacturers can't find a way to add faster USB interfaces on Ryzen devices due to mobos in use... not to mention Thunderbolt controllers (remember than eg. of all the mITX AM4 boards there's only one with TB and how hard it was to integrate by Asrock). And AMD seems to be limiting allowed GPUs as per power budgets coming through those mobos to powers and thermal headrooms of 2060 at most. Maybe once Zen3 mobiles are here we'll see something better... Or maybe some comapny simply "breaks" the line or the rule given by AMD and Intel, and attempts to join those sought after aspects within a sinle device ;)
Gaming laptops currently make more sense with Intel because Intel offers more performance even with fewer cores in games. Unless your workload is more productivity focussed, you’d go Intel. Let’s see what the mobile Ryzen 5600/5800H can do in 2021.

I have mine dual booted with PopOS Linux and Windows 10. It runs both smoothly. The cooling is fantasic with mine and glad to see they kept the same setup. I hate those laptops out there that look like toys. I want a sleek look and Lenovo delivers. Bravo!
I have a Lenovo y740 and it is amazing. Battery life goes with out saying it had like a 3 hour battery life. But the power still holds up today. This is an upgraded version with a better screen and gpu, and the complaints ppl have barely apply to real world use, which is phenomenal overall. Lower your expectations to reality, this is not an ultra light with 20hr battery life, this is a workstation\Gaming laptop that is barely portable lol.
Lenovo is solid, I recently got a Lenovo gaming 3i for school/gaming and I have no complaints, and have the same praises as Jay in this video. Just hats off to Lenovo this year!
Had a Legion with a 2070 and 144hz panel. Only downside was the backlight bleed was really bad, but it's an amazing laptop. Sold it because I didn't need to be as portable.
I have the Lenovo Legion 7i with i7 10875H + RTX 2070 Max Q + Full HD 144 Hz, and I'm very satisfied with it, excellent performance, and decent battery life. Today I have done a battery life test with the following settings: iCUE disabled + Screen at 30% brightness (considering 500nits display, at 30% brightness, is enough for a cloudy day) + Hybrid mode + Quiet mode activated + Windows Battery on Best Battery Life. I have used it for watching videos on UA-cam, listen to music on Spotify (Bluetooth headphones), WhatsApp (ups...), read some articles, Calculator... regular and constant use. 4 hours later and the battery is at 42%... not the best, but for a gaming laptop this is decent!
I'd like to believe that most people give their opinions regardless of being given the product. While I do understand you may be a bit easier on something if it's given to someone, rather than paying the probably $1500 for this thing. I can't imagine that someone would be able to let something deal breaking become swept under the rug just because it was sent for free.
I have the y740 running the 2070 max Q. The one thing Jay forgot to mention, do NOT rely on the battery to last. You'll get MAYBE a couple hours out of it based on what you're doing and what specs you're running
ive got a couple of older lenovos think pads, and ive been extremely impressed in build quality and performance. yes, theyre older, but they blast through windows 10 with ease, and the motherboards often support upgraded hardware with bios updates, because they use the same boards in several different versions of their lineup. with a little research, a 350 dollar think pad with a celeron was bumped to an i5 with 16gb ram and a pci hard drive. it loads win10 20h2 version in under 10 seconds (including bios). it can be hit or miss with lenovo but their pro lines hit the mark really well
Be sure to get an amd one though, I bought the Legion 5 with an Intel processor and I get about 40 minutes of battery life while gaming and about 2 hours of battery life when just watching youtube/web browsing

I just grabbed one of this with an rtx 2070 max a as a refurbish at a micro center. I almost spent $2500 on an Alienware r5. For $1300, this laptop is still wayyyyyy more than I need. Runs triple A’s just fine. It has a fantastic build. Part of what has made me love this channel, is it doesn’t get into INSANE nit picking stuff. I have been researching for awhile, and unless the gaming laptop costs like $4000, there’s always something the reviewer picks that makes it “not a worthy purchase”. I appreciate being hard on a product. But damn. Some of these guys go too far. I will say, if you reallly push on the track pad it will dip, but I slide and tap on it. It’s fine. Could they do better? Sure. Anywho, thanks for the content! I watched a lot of your videos before I landed on something!
To keep the laptop cool, I prefer all laptops have legs at the rear like the keyboard have. The other reason that when you are looking at the screen and play your gaming, it will be smooth because the screen is smaller that a standard monitor, if you zoom it up you see pixels more on laptops. This Lenovo Legion looks smart and the design is great.
many people if they have one of these. Whenever you close the lid it starts blasting rainbow puke like a rave party. open it up and sign back in and it goes back to whatever you had it set too....
My HP Omen 17 came with the SSD, the 16GB RAM, the 2070, the 10th-gen i7, and a 17" 144hz GSYNC screen, all for less than $1500. While these Lenovos are fine enough, they're not really any better than what we can already get for a lower cost. From what I can tell, there are a LOT of laptops just as powerful for the same price or less.
Have one for a week. Got it for work. Very good machine. In fact, its even faster than my desktop. Got 10785H 8C/16T 32G ram and 2070. Agree with every word in this review. Funny, but the speakers did impress me as well. Literally today I heard speakers for the first time accidentally. I switched on a UA-cam music without a Bluetooth headset on and wov I was surprised how crisp and accurate the sound was.... Coming from Lenovo T480s...its a whole world of difference.
Lenovo won me over when I bought their 27" 165hz y27q-20 ips gaming monitor. Before that a tablet. The build quality on that monitor was insane and got me on the Legion train. I just bought the 5i pro with the 12700h and 150w 3070.
Just be aware that if you get the 2070 version or higher you get a vapor chamber instead of heat pipes. Combine that with the 8 core processors and there are issues with it handling the heat. There's some other videos on UA-cam about this. If you are deciding between a 2060 or 2070 then I'd say get the 2060 but if you can afford a 2070 Super or higher then go ahead but be aware the CPU might throttle sometimes due to high temps. I bought a 2070 Super model for my son which has the 6 core processor mentioned in this video. I'm hoping the CPU temps will not be an issue.

Only thing I don't like is the HDR, it seem to be a bit off (oversaturated), needs some tuning before you can leave it on all the time.
hdr needs hybrid mode to be off, it looks amazing on that. with hybrid mode it looks shit

The Cpu throttles all the time at 94C.
The hinge and battery issues shouldn't be too much of an issue for me as ill be using this set up to a monitor most of the time.

Intel again? Jeez these laptop manufacturers do not want my money, I’ve been having to wait far too long for decent Ryzen 4000 laptops.
Acer nitro 5 with amd 4600h is super cheap for what you get. I own one upgraded to 16gb of ram. Haven't upgraded storage yet, but for the price it can't be beat. Display is a little lacking but for under 700 bucks its amazing. Got mine on sale upgraded and after tax for right under $700. Been amazing. Also runs super cool and quiet. It comes with the gtx 1650 4gb but has been upgraded to gddr6 which basically makes it a free super variant. Also comes with wifi 6.
Have you checked the Omen 15? It's a decent machine. Unfortunately tho, it doesn't seem possible to get an AMD CPU with anything higher than a 2060 so far. Kind of bummer but I don't think battery life will make much sense with a 2080 or similar.
Kinda surprised the Legion 7 didn't get the same treatment, considering how there's Legion 5 (AMD) and 5i (Intel)
Well they have the Legion 5 with Ryzen 7 4800H and RTX 2060

Imagine a Laptop like this with a Ryzen in it. More Powerful with longer Batterylife?
The R7 4800U is truly underrated.

While I do understand you may be a bit easier on something if it's given to someone, rather than paying the probably $1500 for this thing. ive got a couple of older lenovos think pads, and ive been extremely impressed in build quality and performance. yes, theyre older, but they blast through windows 10 with ease, and the motherboards often support upgraded hardware with bios updates, because they use the same boards in several different versions of their lineup. with a little research, a 350 dollar think pad with a celeron was bumped to an i5 with 16gb ram and a pci hard drive. it loads win10 20h2 version in under 10 seconds (including bios). it can be hit or miss with lenovo but their pro lines hit the mark really well

Part of what has made me love this channel, is it doesn’t get into INSANE nit picking stuff. I have been researching for awhile, and unless the gaming laptop costs like $4000, there’s always something the reviewer picks that makes it “not a worthy purchase”.

To keep the laptop cool, I prefer all laptops have legs at the rear like the keyboard have.
