  • Motodevelopment's Shane Booth and Chris Urquhart are pleased to bring you this how to motocross riding tip on standing position. Your standing position is one of the most vital parts to your off road or motocross riding. If you get your standing position right everything you do from there will happen with more ease and you will save a lot of energy.
After watching this video you will see how relaxed you should look in the standing position and how well your bike stays balanced. From the central standing position it's very easy to move around on the bike and to get the bike to do exactly what you want it to do.

I’m a new rider and now thoroughly confused. I’ve watched five videos from pro-level riders this morning about the attack position. Two said to be almost always on the balls of your feet, one said to be mostly on the heel and this one suggests staying mostly in the arch area. I can see where shifting areas makes sense such as when landing a jump versus coming into a corner, but trying to establish a baseline for practice good technique is hard with so many varying recommendations.

When standing put your ball of your foot on the foot peg. when sitting down move your foot up to the shifter and the rear brake then when you stand back up put the ball of your foot back on the foot peg

Exactly. What a stupid thing to say. Everyone knows you stand on the balls of your feet.

The problem I run into is when I give power to the bike I just feel like I can’t hold on and it’s trying throw me off?

the problem that tall riders have, is when standing up handlebars are too low no matter how big risers are installed...

I think this video needs a re-edit about the arches thing. Old guys still do it but its flat out wrong unless your on a harley. Watch how much jet lawrences ankles flex in the whoops. It would be impossible if he rode on his arches. I was kind of shocked to see this video.

When I shift a gear, do i need to pull the clutch completely to the grip (bar) and doing so I will have to let my other finger off when shifting a gear. Or can i pull the clutch in to the point when it touches my other finger gripping the handle bar ? I have just started to ride so lol

You dont really need the clutch at all.

Tbh I don’t use the clutch when I shift up, but do when I shift down. But that could just be preference

My issue is how do you shift up with moving your entire foot

Personally when I'm shifting I like to be sitting or at least very close to the seat. In that case you just gotta be quick and slide your foot under, lift up and put your foot back in the peg. It helps to practice when you just sitting on the bike and not moving :)

Is it the same thing on a pit bike?

How about the angle of the levers? When standing, looks like those could be pitched lower.

What about when accelerating or going up a hill? Do you hold strict with that position and hold yourself onto the dirtbike with your arms, or do you lean in so almost all the weight is still in your feet?

Motodevelopmentvideo THERE IT IS!!!!! I’ve been told I have to lean forward but I needed to see what it looked like when doing it properly and this is the only video I’ve seen that mentions it and shows it. Thank you!!! I’m going to share it with others who have the same problem as this visual helps a lot.
