Field Review Of The ESEE 5

  • In this video we do a field review of the ESEE-5. This is a 1/4 thick beast! It is a great all around knife if you don't mind the weight. This thing weights in at 16oz without the sheath. But the weight give this knife a advantage when it comes to chopping with such a short blade. If I had to take just one knife with me to survive with it would be this one! I wouldn't have to worry about it not taking anything that was thrown at it.

    I've always thought that the ESEE company needs to make an ESEE 7 that is as thick as an ESEE5 and slightly longer than the ESEE 6. It would be perfect for batoning and not so large that it becomes unwieldly.

    8:00 Your comment about hand fatigue; Why not just immobilise the knife in the block, and draw the stick backwards to do the feathersticking? This will also improve your control of the angle of each draw much more accurately. Any thoughts?
    Also, if I was choosing knives from the ESEE range, I think I would start with this knife (it's also the "odd man out" being the thickest blade). Then add the others around that, to meet all my needs best. Even though I do not subscribe to the batoning club (I advocate using wedges), this is clearly a very good knife for that, with the least risk of damage, by far. I do not believe that batoning is necessary to split wood, even in the absence of an axe (which I regard as redundant!).
    Thanks for the review.

    • @CentralKyBushcraft
      @CentralKyBushcraft  Рік тому +1

      The comment about hand fatigue was in reference to carving. But that will definitely work for feather sticks and I have done them that way with this knife. It’s funny that you say that about starting with this knife, because that’s exactly what I did. This is definitely a bombproof knife and is capable of handling anything you throw at it. A lot of my knives pull double duty. Both as a field tool but also as skinning and butchering knives. The traction coating that comes most knives has a tendency to catch or collect fat and membrane when processing game which creates drag and decrease the cutting and slicing performance. Plus some of the coatings are as rough as sandpaper. I hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching

    I like the esee 5 but I won't buy it because of the 1095 steel being prone to rust. I work 95 hours a week and I don't want to add oiling a knife into my schedule. It's sad that they made such a beautiful knife with junk steel

    • @CentralKyBushcraft
      @CentralKyBushcraft  2 роки тому +2

      The ESEE-5 is a beast of a knife and you can't wrong with it if you're wanting a hard use knife. You are correct, 10-95 is prone to rust if left wet. It's a misconception that you have to constantly oil and clean it though. The coating that comes on the knife does a great job combating rust. But as you see on all my ESEE'S I have removed it because I've never liked a coated blade. I have forced a patina on all of them and as far as maintenance, all I do is wipe them off when I'm done with them (on my pants leg usually, sometimes with a rag). As far as for the steel, 10-95 is a cheaper steel compared to the super steels that are available now. That being said, there is a reason that companies like ESEE, TOPS, Ontario and other use it. Because it holds up well to hard use, is easily sharpened in the field and ultimately "It works". I wouldn't let it being 10-95 knock me out of buying a great knife. Thanks for watching
