- WE Knife D2 edge retention testing. Does an older D2 Knife hang with the current D2? Is this from the land of disappointment and sadness? Or is it a super star? All this and more in this video.

As always I appreciate your time and thanks for watching.
Right now I believe the best production D2 (talking about consistent preformance over a bunch of knives not single examples that just happen to come out great) is QSP. On average the cut tests I have done with QSP D2 knives I'm consistently getting 20% longer edge retention over other companies D2 I have tested. Qsps d2 is also incredibly responsive to stropping. Once it's no longer slicing magazine paper across the grain without catching 10 strokes per side on a strop and its right back popping hair. A QSP parrot I cut test today in a 2 inch section went 617 liner feet of card board before it would catch in a few places on mag paper. I will redo the test and do it with a 1 inch section so I can mimic your testing so I can compare my numbers to yours. Right now I can safely say qsps D2 is out preforming pretty much every d2 production knife I have tested. Their D2 also feels really good on the stones, takes a nasty edge and allows you to take it fairly high grit while still having some bite/tooth remaining. A lot of companies D2 slicks off if you even think about taking it to a fine grit finish however qsps D2 does really well up to F800 grit and still has some bite even at F1200 grit however it will start to slick off pretty good at F1500 or higher.
The edge I'm testing on is 14dps, Venev F800, strop on leather 7, 5, 3 micron polydiamond emulsion then finish on a few passes on basswood with 1 micron cbn emulsion. That's my default cut test edge.
I like to see more testing in the community. I do have some QSP D2 from a couple years ago that I'll test at some point. I plan to do another D2 discussion video to cover some things I haven't talked about before.
Yep 617. I have the same knife. Love it.
Luv this blade. Reviewed it, but like that it tested well. 👍
Me too. One I kept when I culled my collection (hard).
@@OGBladeReviews yours was the last review I watched prior to YOLOing it into my cart 😂
I love that 617, I have it with the blacked out blade and olive G10. Would love to get that version too with the nice clean blade. Thanks for the testing, you are one of the unsung hero's of the knife community.
Gerald is the man for sure.
Great steal on this one for under a hundred, if you can find them on eBay. Thanks for the testing and review. 👍🗡️🔥
I do really like this one.
The best non powdered D2 I've used was about like Aus-8 which isn't bad but still is not as impressive as people seem to think. I'd like to get ahold of an old griptilian in D2.
I have a gander mountain bm barrage in d2. It's the best d2 I've used, still not great but better than anything else I've come across. The HK stuff is pretty similar
@@jonr1510 I had a D2 automatic HK but I believe those were made by Benchmade back then.
First! WE 617D.
Great content. Loving the channel. Learning a lot. Thanks.
Thank you and you're welcome.
I also have this 617 and I'm glad that I picked it up before it was discontinued
Nice looking knife good video. 👍
That's damn good for D2. China D2 at that. Why can't WE make D2 like that in their Civivi line? That's like Benchmade D2 good
If I remember correctly doesn't the chart say that OKC RAT Aus 8 did better than RAT D2?
Yes the Aus-8 Rat did cut more than the one in this video.
have you ever put all the results in a spreadsheet?
Look at some of his videos from earlier this year, there's usually a link in the description
I have one, I have to add the link in this description. It has over 200 knives and all the results.
@@Outpost_76 awesome
As far as I'm aware, D2 is 1916 technology steel. We have better these days for just as cheap, like 12c27, aus8, and so on. Or hell, even s35vn by now.
I’d really like to see some Aus10 testing I have a few if you need some to test it’s up to you just tell me what I need to do?
Medford uses CPM D2? I thought theirs was the non powdered stuff.
I thought so as well, but I haven't gotten a flat out reliable answer from anyone on the subject.
It could be a steel mixed up in the factory and that has happen in other makers.
This result is far better than ganzo d2 that you had tested before ? I heard ganzo d2 have the higher hrc on LTK testing reaching 61-63, just curious why it end up more worse than rat 1 d2 on cardboard cutting..
The best Ganzo D2 did 135 feet total in a 1 inch section. As far as hardness of D2 all the ones that do well are usually around 60 hrc. Most of the harder ones don't do as well for many reasons.
@@Outpost_76 Yes maybe if the hardness is too high for that type of steels and it can became too brittle when cutting on the abrasive materials like cardboard.. thank you for share with us your test result.
Maybe it is S35VN. Did you get it tested?
So is Civivi's 9Cr18Mov is still superior to Chinese D2? Following up on the Rats, is AUS-8 still the best bet?
I believe the 9CR runs right around the same numbers as this D2.
Like everything about it except the poon...
Poon growing on me
@@robreadinger5340 sex change? JK, lol.
The poon is what drew me in!
I like the poon on the blade, have you tried hunting a blue whale 🐳 without the poon on your blade?
