As someone new to knives, and the fact being in Malaysia, the supersteels get very expensive when it reaches here. I’m not a heavy user but when I’m using specialty “blades” for my leather(prefer fine grain and polished edges for leather). This puts me at ease with my purchases. I have a D2 pilar large on the way as my beater and currently with the lil’ native as my 5th pocket and native 5 LW LC200N as a golf bag dump
S30V is an underrated steel. Edge holding-wise, S30V > S45VN > S35VN. People are programmed to believe newer is always better. Most makers run S30V soft today to make it easier to grind. I have some high end knives from early 2000 in S30V that ran in the range of 60-61 as it was designed for, and double tempered in vacuum furnace followed by cryogenic treatment. I can tell you, they are better than many fancier steels today.
I have never experienced a chippy s30 but i do sharoen it a lot and i love how i can easily bring back the edge after stropping
I always cringe at people whining or making unsubstantiated claims about different steels, mostly S30V and 154CM. I personally only have anecdotal evidence, which you and others have confirmed regularly, that these steels perform as well or better than the M390 family.
I could go on but I don't want to waste your time repeating what you already know. I appreciated your little rant. Every aspect needs to be taught to knife enthusiasts and youtubers. Thank you for all you do.

Used to stay away from s30v because of all the negativity about it, but actually getting to use it changed my mind, great video.

Another voice for S30V not chipping and overheated edges being chip prone. I have almost 20 years of use on a Benchmade knife that cuts everything including steel, often with unkind lateral forces applied and it has yet to chip.
I did experience easy chipping on a factory m390 edge from another quality manufacturer, including a small tip fracture. However once sharpened that behaviour did not present itself again and the edge is now rock-solid.
I want a sane steel that won't rust easily, holds a good edge, wont chip ever unless the geometry is stupid, and is available on a good knife. For that role I like S30V and M390 a lot. However I don't have enough experience with S35VN to comment on it.

Only problem I've had with s30v was with a pm2 with the factory edge. But after 2 or 3 full sharpening it was fine.
Fantastic video. One of my favorite steels is precisely s30v due to my experience with it and other steels. Dunno why it's so widely rejected nowadays. Thanks for the videos

Totally agree about the factory edge my first bugout the blue one no chipping my second one the gray one chipped 3 times in the first week but since I've sharpened it hasn't chipped again 👍👊

Yes, S30V is a very good steel. Those who call it chippy, or lacking in other ways. Do not have very much experience with it, really.

What's funny is most M390, 20CV and 204P are just middle of the road. They live on hype alone for the most part at this point.

There is to much of that shit. People do something with a factory edge, dont like what they get and all the sudden its shit. Then people here something one time on UA-cam and just run with it instead of doing there own research. Good video man, keep it up.

I really really love your videos, you put out a lot of educational information that knife nerds and no knife nerds can understand. I personally have experienced a PM2 with an unusual s30v, I sharpened it two times and with the lightest of the uses it will start chipping at some part of the blade, maybe I needed to sharpen it a couple more of times, I still like the steel, I have a Sage 5 and it performs awesome
Thank you. Definitely sharpen that S30V a few more times. I would dull the apex on a stone and then repeat. They and get past any fatigued or over heated steel and then see how it performs.
Sharpen it at 20 degrees
There were a number of issues with S30V when it first came out nearly 20 years ago. I had knives where the edge chipped if you looked at it wrong and others where the edge crumbled to pieces if I tried to go under 25 degrees per side. Fortunately the manufacturers got those issues ironed out within a few years and S30V has been pretty reliable for the past 15 years or so.
Can't say I really like S30V though. It's a premium steel with a premium price that's only marginally better than the 154CM that it's mostly replaced. To me it's similar to the vast majority of M390, you're paying for the steel name and not any actual performance benefits.

I have S30V on a Benchmade, it takes a wicked shallow edge that is very aggressive and biting, I love it. I have to sharpen it more often than my S90V Benchmade, but I don't mind too much, it is a daily user workhorse steel.
When I bought my ZT 0561 Hinderer Elmax I quickly learned to hate Bohlers latest recipe.
Everyone online bolstered my feelings. Everyone complained of extreme difficulty in sharpening and average edge holding, exactly as I was experiencing.
8 hours it took to reprofile and sharpen the beast! I went through that process a few times.
Then I discovered that DMT diamond was a much better stone for super steels. Who woulda thunk?
After modernizing my sharpening equipment and a little experimenting I soon was able to put a sizzling sharp edge on the old girl in about an hour.
And after about the 7th good edge and getting rid of all the overheated factory steel, my edge holding markedly improved.
Now not only do I love my 0561 and Elmax, I've also learned to sharpen in reasonable time a lot of other tough sum bichen steels like CPM-M4, S110V and M390.
My point is all the various steels do have their own unique peculiarities, pros and cons. But more often than not their glaring faults are more a result of being ignorant to their unique needs and requirements in use, in care and in sharpening.
Once these "problem steels" are properly handled those glaring faults are history.

I think s30v is a good well balanced steel. And how it came into existence is downright inspirational. No issues with chipping, no issues with how the edge flatlines. Gripes against s30v are for me: price point, model design, and personal intuition. I believe s45vn is more in line with what upgrades I wanted for s30v that s35vn didn't give me atleast. S30v has stuck around for a good reason. And if the heat treat is dialed in with consistency the end user benefits. Every time I use it I feel like it's an old friend that I haven't seen in awhile.
I'm curious to see where S45VN goes as far as companies and model options as well as who gets the heat treat done well.

what sharpener do you use? i have the lanskey but i find it makes the tip and belly bevel alot sharper.
For testing I use the same KME for everything. I have a Lansky put away somewhere, it served its purpose. It worked just fine with the diamond stones they have for it.
I use a KME system and sometimes rest the stone holder on the blade for a break, and never had any issues with s30v, but yesterday I got an exclusive spyderco m390 manix 2 and after setting the stone holder on the edge noticed it scratched super easily. First experience with m390 had me bummed and back to carrying my s30v
those results were pretty much the opposite of what I expected. I thought the BOS treatment would edge out the others. I've always wondered why folks bag on s30v. It's an excellent steel.
I bag on S30V because my Benchmade knife with that steel was so poor at holding an edge that I had to sharpen it every week with minimal use. I would cut a few pieces of paper and one zip tie and all the sudden, it was dull. I have nothing good to say about that steel.
I personally have no complaints with S30V in general, however as to the general community accusations of chipping I have indeed had a few examples of knives that I believe the HT must have been off on a particular batch. One in particular, a plain vanilla PM2 that I purchased maybe 4 years ago, is in my “beater” rotation and I’ve lost count of how many times it’s been sharpened. I use it for dirtier jobs but don’t especially abuse it (i.e. prying, torquing, etc) yet it seems to chip more easily than many of my other knives in S30V, even my other Spydercos, so I figure there has to be some anomaly there that I can’t substantiate just by looking at it.
Some do slip out like that, no manufacturer is out of the water on that one. I have tested a few that lost the edge rather quickly but they do seem to be the minority. Justin has a PM2 that tested at 58 hrc and I would love to see how that one is in use and testing.
There is nothing wrong with s30v. It's still a great steel.
I would bet money that 95% (or more) of knife people don’t actually use their knives to even push S30v. They will cut open a few boxes and then sharpen their knife again. I have used s30v to do everything from whittling, to opening bags of concrete, to food prep. It holds up very very well and you’d have to really use a knife to see an improvement in edge retention over s30v, if using a modern high alloy steel.

did the buck debur well? perhaps it was just a lower hrc due to going to the more average consumer.... rather than use 154cm or something. ive had chipping in knives of s90v, both benchmade and spyderco, just had to sharpen past the gunk.
The Buck was easy enough to deburr. This S30V did very close to the BOS S35VN I tested a while back. As I have access to more I'd like to see how more compare to these 2.

Why are the new Buck 112‘s so hard to open ? Thought they would be smoother than they are.
My first bugout first day of edc popped one ziptie and it chipped. That said the chip was sharpened out and haven’t had a problem but still happened so I am weary
Just about any steel will chip if you are trying to cut barbed wire with it. Everything must be in context. I have had excellent luck with S30V.

The thing about putting a good hand edge on a knife is huge.. I've chipped things from S30V, 20CV, S110V, Rex45 to steels that "dont" chip like M4, K390 and 3V on a factory edge... with a hand edge I have only chipped S30V, S90V, S110V, 20CV and M4... but to be fair chipping the M4 and S30V was my fault
I've tried a few different m390/20CV/204P and frankly 90% of S30V on the market is done better 🤣

i would not compare them to each other, they are fairly different. the heat treatment is the reason why the majority of M390/20cv and 204p all perform so poorly at around the level of s30v.

Another problem with the 110 design:
Close the blade, then press on it. Under slight spring tension, it lets you close it *more*. And what happens is that the blade edge contacts the inside of the handle! You can actually DULL THE EDGE with the knife closed! To me, that’s a shitty design.
