This is almost the same truth on how most of us buy beater knives to do the "work" and the expensive ones are only for opening packages, that's why it has incredible edge retention 😆
I was there! The perfect steel snob with every newest composite in the collection. But I finally matured enough to see through this bullshit, I never ever really needed anything above D2 steel. Hell, I am even completely fine with VG10 or 440C, so I reduced my collection to only these and I finally actually USE it.
@@michadebicki6534 same I actually like 440C and D2, more than enough for real-world use. What's more important is blade geometry and heat treatment. The ol' 1095 on the TOPS Storm Vector is heat treated insanely well.
@@nekkomr 1095 rusts, not for me but I am the same, I have a $200 kitchen knife that sits on the rack and looks very pretty, and I have a $35 Victorinox that I use 99.9% of the time.
@@legallyfree2955 oh ya I don't like 1095 because I don't have a use case for that steel, but it definitely has a place in hard use and bushcrafting. I'm using my most expensive knife (Para 3 S30V) over every knife I own, I want it to have some stories to tell someday.
@@nekkomr My every day pocket is a Buck Vantage Pro in S30v, which I like (except for the blade being a little fat for slicing food). It is the second most expensive pocket knife I have ever purchased, excluding multitools. The most expensive is a Benchmade that sits safe in a box and has no stories to tell anyone. If I lose my Buck then I'll carry the Benchmade gingerly until a replacement middle of the road knife shows up, it might get some stores then.

I made the mistake of receiving a $250 framelock on the same day as a $35 framelock. I was blown away by the similarities. I never could really get myself to like the $250 knife after that.
But the steel quality was also better. $250 cut longer.
Just because you can't tell the difference between a filet mignon and a hamburger, doesn't mean there isn't one.

There is a ton of truth to this. I can fully admit that I own knives that cost 300, 500, 700 dollars, but often end up using a 70 dollar slipjoint or 40 dollar CRKT or Cold Steel when I actually need a knife for something.
Enthusiasts with self awareness know that we do not buy expensive knives because they are significantly better tools than cheaper knives. We buy them because we love knives, and we want the ones that give us the most joy and impress us the most.

That's cool. Me personally my most expensive knife is a Manly Wasp with an S90V blade which I paid £52 for ($62...a bargain for S90V) an I even tend not to use it much as I know it's going to be a barstard to sharpen, whereas my SAKs and Bokerpluses with 12C27 are a piece of cake to sharpen. But sure if I had more money I'd probably have bought £300 Benchmades by now lol.

I absolutely love this skit. As a knife enthusiast it 100% describes the mentality that you can easily be trapped into. I use and love my cheaper knives more so than my pocket jewelry. There is something to be said though about a good EDC picture to send to your friends every now and then. Great video and look forward to seeing more from you!

This is the funniest thing I've seen all night. You must be a hell of a funny guy to work with, man. All the best to you, and thanks for the chuckle. (P.S., I bought a Spyderco tenacious in 2016, and I've never once regretted not spending another hundred bucks on fancier steel. It's everything I need in a folding knife.)

My tenacious has been through hell and back several times. Thar being said.. I still prefer my Para 3 and manix 2. Love pretty much all my spydercos but I just can't get into the Paramilitary 2. It just doesn't work for my hands lol
I enjoyed this video too! Still as fir foldable blades Buck, U.S.A.. working fine for ten years. My "ancient" Boken push button folder was my most expensive folder knife. Otherwise my chef knives all cost more than the others. Still, I want to own a Ken Onion chef knife. Beautiful hand crafted items!

I keep my $10 kitchen knife, even though some advertisements suggest that I needed their super expensive and shiny knives that cut through everything like butter. Some quick passes over a fine stone and a strop once a month seems to be plenty for my kitchen needs.
The difference between a cheap and expensive kitchen knife usually comes down to how often you need to sharpen it... and whether or not it is made out of a material that is slowly poisoning you. Also the handle and balance tends to be a bit better on the more expensive knives.

You don’t need to spend a fortune, but don’t buy cheapest. Tip : buy used carbon steel knives fix them up , keep them clean and dry. You can buy really good knives this way.

@@mickeypopa That's nonsense on a couple levels. A crossbow can easily obtain more than $800 worth of food (mine probably has already). It's main job is to hunt. Also, canned food is great and all, but it's not necessary long-term, unless you have a functional fallout shelter that keeps you from going outside. Thanks for the concern though.
My first Spyderco was a tenacious and then three months later I bought the PM2. I will say I love my PM2 so so sooo much more. The detent, the larger hole, the more precise jimping, the recessed liners, a better grind, the finger choil, the lovely bite and longevity of S30V, and the endless hours of fun with the compression lock definitely (yet not necessary) made the extra $$ so worth it. That being said, you’re right. Same function. However, It’s all about the journey for joy. And if you do find yourself in a survival situation, that extra bit of joy might just make the difference between dying with or without a smile on your face..... but at that point, you’re still dead, so who cares. “The knife you have”

Same, but my tenacious will always be more special to me than my pm2, it was my 1st spyderco which I paid around 30 bucks for and my pm2 was around 100. Now they have nearly doubled in price lol.

To be fair the S30V will likely hold an edge twice as long as the other steel but for most users that won't matter. The extra hundred dollars you save on the cheaper knife will buy you a good sharpening stone lol.

I've used tools professionally for years. I learned early on when my first name brand tool fell into the shitter when I removed my tool belt, Buy cheaper tools and if they wear out or break before they get lost or stolen THEN buy a good one. If they get lost or stolen first just buy another cheap one.

Yes Sir, you nailed it once more! That is why I carry 90% of the time a Buck 112 Slim Select and I'm very happy with it. Nice and easy to sharpen, sturdy backlock, deep carry... What not to like?

When you go past a certain price point you treat it differently, i always carry my ruike p801 because its cheap and i can abuse it
@@Mynameischef Excellent choice for sure... the geometry perfectly conducts at slicing ability, and that 14c28n really shines at cuting and stainlesness. The all metal construction leads it to ruggedness... I bet it performs as good, if not better, than the more expensive stuff! Finally, and to the point here, one tends to abuse and care less for the inexpensive ones, and those are the ones doing the hard jobs... Honestly, I see no point buying steel at the price of silver or gold, but that´s just how the industry capitalizes from (some) of us...
i carry a kershaw folder that came 8n a christmas gift bundle...its literally a 5 dollar knife and though i have hand tools of the top makers, the knife, as a rough tool-does t get that same reverence. it sharpens well, if i lose it oh well, and if it breaks well....got 5 bucks?

This is amazing xD I've been using my cheapo 5$ knife from the army surplus store for many years and it's never let me down, funny enough, my friend bought the exact same knife from the same store independently of me! It's been around seven years now, and we both love them still!

I have collected a fair few knives over a few years, quit buying any more a while ago, came to the same conclusion basically. To think how people like my grandfather got by with a cheap knife made from O1 steel maybe, he would have viewed it just as a tool though, like an axe or a saw for example.

But yes, I get what you're saying, I would use a bit of metal with an edge, so long as it was ergonomic.
As a hunter and a fisherman that has had a lot of experience using different steels from a dollar store utility knifes on up to Premium steels, I can tell you that there is definitely a difference in edge retention when you put it to work skinning a deer or cleaning multiple fish. My primary hunting knife is 8cr13mov. It’s a soft steel on purpose: easy to resharpen in the field after dressing and skinning an animal. It does alright, I’d normally resharpen 2-3 times when processing a deer. Got to the point one night where my hunting knife dulled earlier than normal. I happened to bring along another knife in bohler N690 (similar to d2) and didn’t feel like sharpening. I was able to do 90% of field dressing, skinning and part of quartering that deer it to get it in my freezer that night without resharpening. If we’re talking fishing, cheap fillet knives vs H1 and LC200N, vs Vanax. Each one has benefits and drawbacks, but there are noticeable differences in how well each one holds up under real use.

Lol. I own knives with probably half of the exotic knife steels currently on the market. I’ve really come to enjoy the basic steels that can be quickly sharpened and stropped back to shape. My fancy steels take to long to get dull enough to justify sharpening they are rarely as sharp as my cheap steels. Think this alter personality should team up with uncle randy someday!
I love this video man... I have both knives and it's true, the chesp one doesn't really lack too much and that's because the quality control... And yes edge retention hardbess etc would be better in the expensive but it's not like the cheaper ones steel is made out of candle wax either :B

When I started branching out into carrying multiple knives my favorite two blade steels were n690co and 14c28n because I was into wood carving and in a three hours span I would have to sharpen every type of blade steel multiple times so truthfully I got more use out of those mid steels because I could sharpen them faster. but since then my main knife has gotten more and more expensive and my secondary knife is usually cheaper in a mid steel and gets more use with less regrets and they are often tougher. another interesting thing is that fixed blades are cheaper and have more utility than a folder and that they are great for those mid steels because nobody wants to sharpen a 5” blade for a month to delete the secondary bevel (i’m behind on that already) which is a must because production knives never come fully finished. I can make a piece of malleable pig iron cut as well as anything else. I can make a rock cut things actually. I have a felling axe that was too heavy that I cut the handle down and cut the bit out of it with a grinder to make it into a splitting maul style hatchet because I have too many junk axes laying around but that thing is sharp as hell.
For wood carving carbon steels tend to be best. Tougher and less likely to break during carving and hold an edge well while being easily sharpened really quickly. Plus during carving and whittling it's normal to have to strop up an edge frequently.

I know I’m going to catch some flack for this one, but here it goes. I’ve always had a question about cardboard cutting, since it seems it is the raison d’etre of a good portion of the knife community. Do we really need to be cutting cardboard boxes into tiny shards that cannot be easily bundled for recycling at the dump? Has anyone bothered to ask their waste hauler (whose bills to us just keep going up) about this? How many of us really have that much cardboard that cannot be simply folded or sliced in half to fit in our recycling bins? It seems that for some a new, expensive knife is a solution looking for problem (i.e., needless cardboard cutting).
I use my knife to open boxes at work. If you are opening hundreds of boxes, some of which are glued and must be sliced apart, your knife will dull. If you dont open hundreds of boxes a week.... Then dont worry about it. 😃
I've had the same question! It's like "breaking down the recycling" has become an excuse to manually mince cardboard for hours. lol
Not even a joke, I use a milwaukee utility knife to cut cardboard. Why waste my 50 dollar pocket carry d2 on something where a 20 cent utility blade does the job for months?

I found it funny (even if you state it is not). I used to do reviews of hifi equipment what feels like a lifetime ago, and I discovered pretty much the same as you discover here. Above a certain quality point, the differences in quality vs price start to disappear, and the real differences (apart from certain costs of materials and production processes) is found in the design rather than in the price. After a while as a reviewer, where I followed the market and products closely, and also read a lot of other peoples reviews, I found that in a worryingly amount of cases, I could predict what the review result would be from three single facts: The person reviewing, the brand and the price.
I made a very concious effort to try to ignore price. It was, of course, impossible. I'd like to say I quit reviewing because of integrity, but the fact was that the magazine I reviewed for reduced staff, and as a freelance reviewer, I was dropped. Looking back, though, I realize I lost the enthusiasm along the way. I haven't upgraded my equipment much, and I still love to listen to music.
Going back to knives, I hope you keep your enthusiasm, honesty and humour. I started to subscribe after your hilarious damascus video. I loved it, and I love this, and the reason is that you are honest and challenging expectations on paper with actual testing.
Keep it coming, man. We need honesty and we need a laugh, even if it is at our own expense.
I suddenly feel much better about the Buck Kingsman knife I have in my pocket that I got on sale for $10.
I use a Morakniv HD (thicker spine) ever day and it coast me 20 €. It is on my belt since 2018 and it is easy to sharpen and never let me down. No need to feel bad about a low priced, but good knife. Know your knifes limits and give it the care it deserves, then you will be happy for a long time.
Honestly one of the best heat treated, ergonomic and all around useful knives I've ever bought was a 10$ no name Kershaw that was on sale. I keep it in my car and use it every now and then. I mainly carry Spydercos cause I love them so much haha.
@@Mr.Gottfried Yup... I carry the same Mora HD as my EDC beater knife and it's never even thought about letting me down, despite taking some seriously hard work that some sensitive little snowflakes would consider abuse...
But 10 minutes with a DC4 and my strop whenever it needs some love and it's better/sharper/infinitely more reliable than most €250 knives were when they left the factory, and the low price means that I don't have to stress about dinging it or getting a tiny scratch on the blade so it's all that I could ever ask, or wish, for...

Damn this video really made it's point. At first I said oh it's a comparison between a knockoff Spyderco and a real one. Nope. And that messed me up. But I guess they just charge more for the different materials in the knife. But even still. Is it really that much more expensive?
You're also paying for production costs, better quality control, etc. There's so much more to a knife and it's cost than just the steel it uses.
I may have to do a serious follow up on this video to clarify some things in regards to quality control and whatnot 🙂

😆 I've been waiting a very long time for someone to make this video! I'm completely done with all of the sanctimonious knife snobs out there. I've bought ONE Spyderco, ONE Byrd, and several clones for a tiny fraction of the cost of ONE of the originals. I came to the conclusion, why pay such a large amount of money for a name? The name does nothing for me, and if I break a clone (which is very unlikely) I can buy a whole box of clones and STILL not have payed as much as the original cost. THANK YOU! 👍👍👍

A lot of the "knife review guys" would agree that most of the budget friendly knives work fine for most common tasks. I think they just enjoy the nerd/geek aspects of the steels and ergonomics. It is a fun hobby for some. I like to support the USA when possible. Due to political and economical decisions by the US government its not as easy as it once was. Globalization is a fact. I try not support communist countries. Put your money into the economy you want to support. Once again, easier said than done. I carry a Spyderco USA made knife. They still manufacture some of their knives on American soil and often donate to Alzheimer's and other good causes. I personally still love 440C.
U.S has become the most communist country. Well, communism is better.
440C is a decent steel that is the basis for some knife comparison charts with 440C being 100 and other steels higher or lower. 440C will hold an edge all day if heat treated to 57-58. In retention it beats a lot of steels you would swear were better. AEB-L, 14C28N, Nitro-V all under 440C on edge retention, but beat it on toughness.
I absolutely will not buy Made in China anything if I can avoid it and it is going to get easier more and more to avoid their products. Companies are leaving China like it was California with its constant shutdowns and now refusing to allow QA people from outside in to inspect their products and many more reasons. The place has become a totalitarian state as bad as North Korea.

I mean to be fair, the more expensive one is using g10, rather than some cheap injection molded plastic on the cheap on. The compression lock in superior to the liner lock. And the expensiveness isn’t made overseas. I’ll pay a fair amount more to support workers in my own country, than some communist country. With all of that being said, I won’t pay $200 for a working folder. I’ll pay $250 for a microtech to use and abuse though ;)

To date my favorite folding knife (not counting my Swiss army knife) has been a $9 harbor freight knife. It's easy to sharpen, has held up to abuse, I haven't been afraid to abuse it because it's easy to replace, and it works.

Based on your review I just ordered the more expensive survival knife. Compression lock is crucial to my everyday survival situations to survive in the backyard wilderness.
