I met John Beluschi AND Dan Aykroyd before they became famous. It was around mid-October to early November 1975, when I was a student at NYU. I was shopping for stereo gear at a place called Crazy Eddie's, located at the corner of 6th Avenue and 8th Street in Greenwich Village. I was at the front of the store when John and Dan walked in and began to look at equipment. Saturday Night Live had just begun and I immediately recognized them, though I didn't yet know their names. There were others in the store, but nobody seemed to know who they were. For some reason, I locked eyes with John and Dan, probably because I was staring at them trying to remember their names from the show, which had only aired for one or two Saturday nights at that time. John started giving me that eyebrow twist that he later became famous for. I broke out laughing and approached them. I said that I loved the show and told them how funny I thought they were. They smiled, thanked me, and seemed to appreciate that they were recognized.

He's wrong that John died many years later. The story would've taken place in 1981 (Taps) and Belushi died the next year.

Heard a funny story about Belushi in a Joe Walsh interview. They went to a high-end steakhouse (Mortons?) in downtown Chicago. Refused admittance because of dress code (both wearing jeans). Belushi got an idea, they went to a hardware store, bought black spray paint, and ended up spray-painting their jeans (denim) black. Went back to steakhouse and were admitted. Joe Walsh noticed when they got up to leave after their meal that there was an imprint of the seat of his pants left on the chair from the not quite dried spray paint. So I guess you could say they beat the dress code and left an "impression". Two wild and crazy guys !!

How come Sean Penn didn't just say the name of the film? I saw an interview with Tom Cruise and he too was talking about the film without mentioning the name of it. It's almost as if they were told not to tell people what film this is for fear that people would seek it out. Perhaps the men behind the curtain don't like what the film represents...

My Belushi story: I went to school at the U of Oregon, early 1970's. "Animal House" the movie was being filmed on campus, and as a staff photographer for the student newspaper, I was assigned to cover it for three days. In the food fight scene (which they had to do w/ multiple takes), Belushi is taking a break, sees me, comes over and says "Me WANT gum!". Because I was chewing a big wad of bubble gum. I start to fish thru my pockets for the fresh gum, he squeezes my mouth open, says "Gum!"....and takes the gum out of my mouth and sticks it in his own. We're within two feet of each other. Very memorable.

I think everybody has a John Belushi story. In the very early 80s me and a friend went to see Joan Jett at the Palladium in New York City. We ate a couple of Quaaludes and the band went on we passed out. When the show is about to be over we woke up and try to get backstage. In the alleyway in back of the Palladium we see a limousine pull upIt’s John Belushi with a bevy of playboy playmates. To make a long story short we didn’t get backstage but we did see John Belushi.Good night

Excellent. My story: Same venue -- Palladium NYC -- but it was the Blues Brothers concert on 07/01/80 with Belushi, Aykroyd & Co. on stage. My "Quaaludes" that night was tequila. And way too much of it. The audience was filled with Saturday Night Live cast members. Great show.

I always get the feeling with Penn that he puts little time into thinking about what he is talking about. This story would have been probably during 1980 or 1981 when they both started in Taps. Belushi died in 1982 so how is that many years later? It’s as if he does not want to put himself out there at all.

I still remember the big front page headlines in all our local (Tacoma, Seattle, etc) newspapers the morning after Belushi died: "Belushi dead of apparent choking". The drug stuff didn't come out until a while after. I think they were trying to make it more of a Mama Cass deal than the sordid story it was.
