I agree with your assessment of the A36Plus and have bought one despite the dirty reports. Do note, one UA-camr did measure a clean transmission. His test was done by using an antenna to receive on his tinySA to measure the transmissions of the talked with its stock antenna. Since the stock antenna is not resonance for the harmonics, the actual transmission is much cleaner. The other UA-camrs measure their talked cabled directly to their analyzers. In essence, the antenna is a band pass filter!

Kudos to the pilot and the whole team! Been on a few "rides" with our pilots for an electrical utility and those pilots are incredible - be safe y'all and thanks for keeping all of us fed. Oh yeah, the radio is cool too...I also have that 3 bander Fang and it still works pretty well. Cheers!

Talkpod has since upgraded and updated the A36PLUS. It's now is clean, has 999channels, about 8 watts, added signal strength meter, able to name channels from the keypad, upgraded the battery to a 3200mAh capacity and more. They named it the A36PLUS 8W. I had just bough a couple off Amazon and very happy with them.

correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the reason the Japanese do not readily incorporate newer standards is because of licensing. We know the Chinese don't care about that.

I also like the USB-C on the battery. This way you can be charging an extra battery while you are using the radio.

    Here's pet peeve of mine.
All these radio's have ANI and PTT-ID encode.
Why don't any of them have Decode?

Just today mine was dying (battery) as I went out & I simply grabbed the powerbank… & it quickly charged. The screen is really nice. Is there a way to tell it’s “on” when the screen goes to sleep? For baofeng: there are better/larger batteries that charge directly from USB-a -to-barrel connector.

thx for the review! I’m new to this. For preapredness I have PTT radios for my wife and I. I have CB radios and police scanners. But have no experience with amateur radio. Is this device a good place to start?

For your collection, I'd love to send to you a shoulder patch from the New York City Transit Police Department, but I've only a uniform-worn couple of them, and there are no more of those patches since the NYC Transit and NYC Housing Police Departments merged with the NYPD. Sorry.

Bob, I've warned you before about Baofenging in public! Can get yourself busted for that.
Seriously: Having had 3 Baofengs, all with serious problems, I just an't get excited about chinese rigs. My right-out-of-the-box #1 suspicion is how clean spectrally is the TalkPod? Just watched a test done on a service monitor and the TalkPod is dirty full stop. 2nd and 3rd harmonics are out of spec. Besides causing out-of-band interference another problem is that power in the harmonics is robbing power that could otherwise be going to the fundamental frequency. I guess this problem could be shined on if one is using a pair of these HTs out in the boonies (e.g., for hunters) where they'd be so far out that there wouldn't BE anyone who'd suffer from the interference. My #2 suspicion is front-end selectivity. Baofengs are notorious for having lousy front ends where they get easily overloaded by signals near to the radio's operating channel.
Sorry to be such a Donny Downer that cares about quality in a rig.

It also does Airband, which is also cool (I don't think you mentioned that...). I'll probably pass for now, but thanks for the review! DE K7RLN

    DO NOT GET THIS RADIO!
Firstly, it is technically only "legal" (in that it has a certification) on GMRS frequencies. Just because it can be unlocked to use Ham VHF/UHF bands, it's not technically legal to do do.
Secondly, it fails a test regarding spurious transmission on all bands SPECTACULARLY. You can very easily pick this thing up on as far away as the 3rd harmonic.
Get a Radtel RT-470X instead. it's about the same price, does even more (including the USB-C charging), and is also Chirp compatible.
