So I’m watching this after hearing that the audience booed this show, and yet all I hear is people cheering and applauding. Additionally, reviewers at that time said that the score was really weak. But I don’t think it’s that bad. I’d take this over Grease any day.
I think by the time this was recorded it has gained a reputation as being a camp classic in the making and thus started pulling in a crowd who could actually appreciate it
@@morganalabeille5004 Yeah. I know that it was meant to be a serious horror musical, but I feel like the camp works, especially because that’s how a lot of people describe the film. Of course, a serious interpretation like the novel is welcome, but I wish the campiness kept the production alive just a little longer.
Oh my gosh, Gene Anthony Ray and Charlotte D'Amboise are just magic together. Somehow they translate a complicated, nasty, truly screwed up relationship into song and dance. What artists!
I'm sorry but I don't understand how people say that this production gave virtually no clue that Carrie had telekinetic powers. I'm seeing all kinds of weird things happening: so far, a light blowing out in a shower of sparks and Margaret White's wall spontaneously bursting into flames. I mean, that's not normal. And I'm only halfway through the first act! I love this crazy production so much. Thank you for sharing this!
This was the final performance so by this time they had put a lot of effort into fixing that problem. Plus the lightbulb breaking effect didn’t work like half the time.
These events happened on stage, but where was it explained in the lyrics or dialogue that they were caused by Carrie’s telekinetic powers? I’m not trying to be a smart ass-I’m really curious because I personally wouldn’t have picked up on it unless I had already seen the movie. They should have dumped songs like “Dream On” for a song explaining Carrie’s powers.
@@JohnDoe-gk7okat the end of this act she is holding flames in her hands and there is a line where she explicitly states “I have powers I can use”. I don’t think things need to be spelled out more than that.
@@JohnDoe-gk7okis Evening Prayers, Carrie gives us some insight into her powers. “There’s a movement in my head, can you understand the change? Somethings shifting, somethings lifting, why do I feel it’s something strange?”
Wow! Some thrilling music and just amazing vocal power and range of Betty Buckley. That high note she hits in full voice at 59:04 on the counter must be at least an E. Just gives me goosebumps. Such a shame this show closed after several previews and only five regular shows.
Act 2 is here ua-cam.com/video/V-3g37zMmrE/v-deo.html I’ve always found the cries for act 2 on Broadway so odd when we have the entire show. The act 2 on Broadway cut a reprise, replaced Sue’s “Heaven” with “It Hurts to Be Strong,” has revised dialogue between Margaret and Carrie after “I’m Not Alone,”watered down “Heaven” at the prom, and blasted a couple extra flames during “The Destruction.” Margaret’s only real moment is “When There’s No One” and we’ve got Betty doing nearly the entirety of it on the press reel. What’s the big deal? lol
@@ErikChampney so do you prefer the Stratford act 2? Because I do loooove it hurts to be strong. And I like heaven as a septet as opposed to the octet because Margaret’s ghost voice is kinda odd
You have an awesome channel, Erik! I'm really looking forward to skydiving into a tsunami of theatre nostalgia, and I also want to see if you have any more audios or videos of a Broadway or national touring show.
I saw the first preview on Broadway and was undecided at intermission whether it was good or not. The second act was a disaster but it sure was wonderful to talk about this epic flop
I'm still impressed every time I hear the In song. They did all that singing and dancing without any tracking vocals or backstage singers!
I like how you can hear the orchestra better than on the sound board recording

So right. They loved it! I had only seen the Stratford footage, so I never knew. Frank Rich assassinated this show.

Hateley and Buckley were perfection.
I love this version of In because Charlotte does the walkovers in her solo. Her dancing is amazing

The improved quality of this video makes me wonder if Act Two was also filmed, this time by another camera in the theatre.
