  • Welcome to an Attila Total War Video, and today I will be discussing the game's biggest weakness, and how the Devs could have fixed it. On top of that, I am also going to use the same thought process for future titles, such as Total War Troy. And discuss ways in which those future games can avoid the same trap.

I love Attila Total War. But I really do think this one small thing is why it is not as popular as Rome 2 for example.

@killer 2308 You could, but the game secretly runs in a poorer quality if you turn the Romance Mode off.
On Romance it runs at 64 bit.
On Records it is still on the old 32 bit engine

I mean there is the fact that the time of Rome 2 and one are well known to the every man i mean we heard of the Romans, Carthage, Greeks and Macedon and maybe the Gauls, Iceni, Seleucid and Parthians. But then you come into Attila and yes people have heard of Rome but not this divided, weaker Rome which looks nothing like Rome to a common person, then you got the Huns, Saxons or Angles and the Goths people have heard of and the vandals, but after that The Sasanian Empire, the African tribes, kush, the lumbards are not as well known as the Rome 1 or 2 factions where. The dark atmosphere as well does not help i reckon.
To be honest most Factions in in Rome 1 or Two and in a lot of the other titles have there enemies spelled out to who and are suggested where the Player should go first to expand example when playing as Rome you are told to squash the Etruscans, Gauls, Carthage, Greece for example, or as England told to kick some Scottish or French. or even in Warhammer as the Dwarves you are told to give the Orcs a good thrashing. You get the point.
Attila lacks this for most of the factions yes you start with Enemies but your not really directed at them, Most factions start with the Same Western Rome enemy.

Tutorial: when defending towns in Attila as the WRE, place your cav outside the city in a hiding place like a small patch of trees. When the moment is right, charge them into the rear of those unsuspecting barbarians. Also it’s about holding choke points and using your archers to mass effect. Sometimes you can’t defend the town center at all. You may want to instead defend a specific street with only two points of entry and let them have the city square. And your archers may have to fight hand to hand more often than not. Some battles my scout equites racked up over 1,200 kills from charging into the rear of enemies and mass routing them. I love how Attila works. In 3 kingdoms I see men with 8 arrows in their arms not going down it’s ridiculous. But in Attila if an archer shoots you from point blank and you don’t have armor you simply die as you should. Gonna go play it now.

But in one of the hardest campaigns in my TW life, I managed to hold and re-conquer, fighting up to 6 battles over each end turn. Second attempt was retreating all the way back to Italy leaving nothing but scorched earth. That was easy going. (not being humble: I did so way before Legend of TW :-P ). By the time Attila himself came out to play, he had no chance. I highly recommend the second strategy over the first, if you have a real life.

Maybe it was because I played BI first, but I never had a problem with the accessibility to Attila Total War in that regard. I made this comparison before, but I feel that Rome 2 is a nice hamburger you can get quick, cheap, and don't need an acquired taste for, while Attila is an attempt at some luxury delicacy caviar sandwich or something that becomes almost inaccessible. The game is very stressful, aysmmetric, and while I love the "on the edge" feel of the game (Exactly why I got it), the game is one of the slower and less steamrolly games from my experience.
Also after all the additions post-Empire Divided, and Attila feels outdated in many aspects. Would have been better if Attila got the ED DLC instead IMO.

In some ways Attila is a spiritual successor to BI. BI was essentially an experiment in solving the problem of late game 4X boredom. BI eliminated the early and mid game, made the entire campaign the late game, and then introduced a number of concepts meant to keep the late game challenging and interesting like hordes. Attila took some of these concepts and refined them to the point that Attila is not really a 4X strategy game; it's a survival game. The point, even as the Huns, is not to conquer your opponents and build an empire. It's rather to not die longer than everyone else, which is really tedious when you consider the HUGE number of cheats the AI gets. I will give CA props for taking a risk on finding a way to put a stop to a nagging problem of the strategy genre which has existed within it since the very beginning. However, I don't think they succeeded. Clearly Attila rubs a fair number of people the wrong way. I mean, not failing longer than everyone else? There's a word for that, and it's "job" not "video game."

I'd say Shogun 2, base game, if you're looking for something more simple, (don't mix simple with easier, though). But it might gets repetitive if you don't give it your own twist of challenge. It sucks, though, what CA did to Fall of the Samurai. Rome 2 for more variety and areas to play in.
I enjoyed both and have played about 700 hours of them combined.
In both case, I'd recommend waiting for a sale. especially Rome 2. Can't talk about Attila, never played it.

When I don’t play as WRE I play as the Jutes, destroy my neighbors and secure my borders. Get my armies that trait where they don’t take snow attrition and conquer the entire north then invade the British isles. After that I lose interest mainly because it feels awkward to me that, after building such a big empire, when I take brick and concrete cities they get reverted into thatch barns and huts. Just seems like after a while my civ would’ve advanced and learned from other cultures enough to build fortifications beyond wooden walls. That’s about where I lose the immersion and wrap up the campaign.

Total war warhammer 2 has 3 to 4 times the concurrent players, does hero combat right, has the most varied factions of any total war game, a massive modding community, a new update slashed the end turn time down to seconds instead of minutes like it used to be, siege battles are still trash through... though it seems like those will be improved soon. The game itself, most of the mechanics, the graphics and the atmosphere were great, when I first played this game, I was really hyped up. I didn't care which faction was first on the board, I alreadyhat hundreds of hours in Rome two and looked through all the factions, loaded them up, looked at their units and positions and decided which I wanted to play my first campaign with after that. I had a great fun with my first 2-3 campaigns, but at some point I just felt it was getting really repetativ.
The hordes played different then the 'normal' factions, but playing the horde felt on the campaign map mostly the same.
And playing a 'normal' empire also followed the template every time:
    1. Establish a power base
    2. Defend against the huns
    3. The game is over, since every other faction is nearly wiped out by the huns and proposes no challenge to beat.
(I had a similar problem with Warhammer 1)
Then every few years ~10% of our food just goes away from one month to another, and you have no easy way to know how much you will loose, so you can plan ahead and prepare.
And I personally find that the movement range in this game is way to high.
When the AI can send an army from there home settlement beyond you first, highly defended settlement, to raze a random settlement in your backyard, in which you have invested 10th of thousands of gold and you just loose it in an instant, without a chance to react...
I don't know, maybe I'm playing wrong, but things like that alway bothered me.

I really disagree with Attila being best Total War. I have tried it several times and really tried to enjoy it, but every time, about the mid campaign, I come to a feeling that it’s pointless and frustrating and then I just stop. There are several reason for this: 1. Things that are easy to fix and CA should have fixed (but they newer bothered) like not being able to fast forward enemy agent actions. This really hits in mid campaign when there is gazillion enemy spies doing some pointless thing, tanking turns to take three time more than they otherwise would. 2. Unit balance, AI buffs and generally all stats. I don’t know what it is but when I look at units and their stats I feel like they don’t match. Oh, enemy general is dead and my cavalry is charging slingers, unit that I think should run in first contact with anything in any situation, decide to fight nearly last man. 3. Towns without walls and buildings slots. Building slots is not all bad, you are supposed to optimise but every town becomes same, either military or economy, because there are too few slots and too many high priority buildings. And when I got all the money, it feels really arbitrary that I’m restricted with slots. Also if you got the money every town should be wallable (is that a word?). 4. Siege battles. Long story short: I feel like town defences are specifically made to not be that hard for the attacker and I dislike this design decision. 5. Battle micromanagement. It seems that with every new TW title micromanagement in battles is increased tenfold with new unit abilities and increased speed of battle. Again I’m going to cut to the chase and say there is too many abilities. Most of momentary buffs are nearly useless or at least not worth it. Formations are cool but stationary ones just pain me. Advisor: “Sir, enemy is pushing hard in our middle. “ General: “No worries! We will flank them with our reserves. Soldiers there, move to flanking positions and double time.” Minute latter: Advisor: They are just about to overrun us, Sir!” General: Ok soldiers in flank charge now!” Soldiers: “Sir, we are still here. I know you commanded us to move but we are in shield wall and we can’t move anywhere in this formation.” General: “-.-“ Advisor: “Sir, battle is lost.” 6. Tech and “advancement”. Without going too much in detail I think it’s always bad game design when it’s better to wait than tech up because you lose some major things. It’s just really “gamee”. If developers really wanted to Roman Empires “change” trough campaign (not going to argue how stupid it is) it should have been something else like time related so that instead of losing better buildings with technology, they would lose ability to build them in specific time and would be forced to take technology for replacement buildings. 7. Lastly it’s not better. My favourites are M2TW (of course), S2TW and R2TW, all for different reasons. They are all better and worse than the other but Attila inherited most of what’s wrong with R2, added some bad things on it own and worst of all: it didn’t get better.

Atilla's biggest weakness is the time era. Rome's biggest advantage is in the title; it puts you in the shoes of fledgling state of the greatest empire mankind has ever created, while also allowing you to play as successor states (post Alexander the Great) and rise of Eastern states again. It's just a too awesome time-era not to play.

My main issue was the really bad frame rates in battles compared to other total wars. Thrones of Britannia campaign was inferior, but the battles looked pretty great. They looked like Attila Total War battles but on average ran 20-30fps faster, usually managing to sustain frame rates higher than 60fps.
On Attila, i've seen frames drop to the 20's even on high end PC's. After playing Thrones, Warhammer 2 and Three Kingdoms it does not look good. Even Rome Total War 2 looks better in the sense that battles run a lot smoother and close to 60fps even in big engagements. It's a shame because i otherwise think Attila is pretty great. I really hope CA can revisit it and implement some of the visual optimizations they did on Thrones, into Attila and it will give the game a new leash of life in 2020.
