He told me, the piston of the race engine was that small and flat, it was hard to believe it was of a diesel engine. Would really like to know, what it looks like, but there is nowhere a picture to be found.
Sounds alot like the pistons we use in the US on some stroker race engines. You move the wrist pin up in relation to the top of the piston, this shortens the overall height of the piston but the real reason for it is to allow the use of a longer connecting rod for a better rod ratio. These are sometimes referred to as "long rod" engines.

I wanted one before this video, now I'm unsure from a practical standpoint. still a beast though
You guys know a 6.7 Powerstroke will make more HP and Torque than this engine with just a tune right? Literally no aftermarket hardware, just a tune, and it will still be reliable. Hell, you could take a 5.9 single cam, mechanically injected cummins and do injectors, pump mods, and a turbo and come out with a 650+hp engine for less than a quarter what one of these things is worth as a complete engine on the secondary market.

Have a look for darkside developments, a diesel race car builder from over here in the uk. He has shown why the v12 tdi R8 was dropped. Using an example of the car and power unit.
So they can cheat again? The race version car was not a diesel. Yes it used mostly the same principles (autoignition ) but it wasn't powered by pump diesel. They used some fancy fuel mixture for those cars. So long story short you have another aspect of VW diesel gate in race engines or false advertising depending on how you want to look at it.
This engine was the TDI hero. I had a TDI 1.9 manual when I first started driving and I loved it. It is such a shame dieselgate happened because these were great engines to drive and got amazing fuel economy.
Still got a 1.9 TDI in a Fabia VRS MK1, these diesels get more MPG than a smaller petrol engine so it offsets the cost. Diesel still works out cheaper in the UK, which is nice.

Diamond DA42 Twin Star is the mass produced plane that I know of, which uses diesel engines. There might be more airplanes using diesel engines, but I wasn't going deep into this.
Packard made a 9-cylinder radial diesel for aircraft in the 1930's. The most successful aircraft diesel was the Junkers 205/207 opposed-piston. They were in airline service in the 1930's and had some applications in WW2.
Wow, the VAG has always been ahead of the game as far as automotive technology goes, but we ALL know that this engine was so far ahead of the game and it was EXTREMELY well balanced with an awesome powerband and how often do you see a V12 diesel? I have to give it up to Audi/VW for this build. They really crushed it with the Q7 V12TDi.
Plus any new American diesel from a full size truck will make more horsepower and torque than this engine with just a tune. Literally no aftermarket hardware, just throw a tune on it and your already out performing the V12 TDI and probably still beating its reliability.
i have one and love it to death. currently has 310.000 km´s. i use 10.8L/100km. you can´t find a car that has better space, towing capacity, size, power, acceleration and fuel consumption combined
@@faxxzc well i’ve driven the SQ7 as a learner’s car when getting my hauling license. I’m temped to buy one, but because of shitty European emission regulations I started to think twice. My neighbour had an old Q7 with 4.2 V8 diesel which was not as spaceous as the SQ7 i’ve driven. The SQ7 TDI much better than the Q7 V12 TDI in every single way. Sportier, torque output is almost identical Q7=1000 Nm vs. SQ7=900 Nm, on horsepower Q7= 500 HP vs SQ7= 435 HP. Despite the lower power output, the SQ7 is faster. The SQ7 got the more reliable and responsive ZF 8 speed gearbox instead of the less reliable ZF 6 speed gearbox. The SQ7 is faster than that road ship of yours because it’s a lot lighter, and it’s more modern. Plus it’s more fuel efficient. I bet you’d get even more power out of that V8 than that V12 because you’ve got more space under the hood of the SQ7 to do crazier mods than with that humongous V12 which weighs over 300 kg and doesn’t leave any room for bigger turbos etc. So you clearly don’t know what you’re talking about. I’d bet even the SQ5 V6 TDI would be faster than your roadship in a 0-60 and even a 1/4 mile race. Old diesels are 💩
@@orhankucuksahin6297 i bought a sq7 engine and transmission. i want to put two high pressure pumps which go up to 2500 bar from the sq7 into the v12 which has old tech 2000 bar pumps. darkside made me 2 gtd2872 turbos which should go to 800 hp easy. from a technical standpoint i can tell you the sq7 engine is much more stressed due to the hot v turbo layout, it is very common for those to heat soak. also you cant do much on the exhaust because they have all that stupid euro 6 adblue stuff. the computers are regulating it so you cant throw it out for less restriction. if the v12 had the zf 8hp it would smoke the sq7. however the 6hp32 is much more reliable than the 8hp. i havent heard of a single gearbox failure yet, but you see dozens in the sq7 sq8 a8 touareg and the jeep trackhawks that run the same trans.

Audi has a penchant for stuffing the most engine in the tightest spaces. It's not uncommon for the entire engine needed to be removed to replace a timing chain and tensioners which are not accessible any other way. Even a front mounted serpentine belt often requires the entire front bumper assembly and wheel well liners to be removed as well as the radiator partially unbolted for tilting making it more of a professional procedure than weekend warrior affair. In other words, to put the most engineered high-power engines in Audi vehicles means a dis-connect to ease of maintenance which Audi doesn't apologize for.
I remember when this engine was still in the testing stage and the problem at that point was that there was no transmission small and sturdy enough to withstand the torque developed by the engine. IIRC they stuffed one in an R8 as a prototype and had to put a Ford Transit van transmission in it for a fighting chance :)
The biggest advantage that the diesel has is the fact that diesel fuel has 17% more calories than petrol. The Audis made fewer fuel stops as it had better economy. It was still bloody fast but it’s economy was a massive factor. IMHO.
As a side note, the modern generation of all those engines (Cummins, Powerstroke, and Duramax) are all heavily under tuned from the factory. They will actually make more power and torque than the V12 TDI with just a tune, no aftermarket hard parts needed.

If anything diesel and electric combined in a car will be the future of power, using it as a range extender and having a way to spool up the diesel engine for added power to launch with electric will make some very quick cars. Freight train pulling power but for the road!
Naturally you have too many fans to even read never mind remember each comment but I recently responded to an older video about the best Audi engines. I mentioned I had worked for Audi franchises for nearly 20 years, during which time I had driven all except one of those featured. It may well have been the V12 TDI - we either had one at another branch where the Chairman was based, or we were going to get one but then didn't for some reason, it's that long ago, and even at the time, was that far removed from my job in finance on a different premises, the details are hazy. It would, for sure, have been interesting to try it! Regarding the various comparisons, it seems rather a futile exercise as even then, any 12 cylinder was a real rarity - just a handful like Rolls Royce and Ferrari, but a diesel one? Although Cummins do design engines for automotive installation, I would tend to say in that case, suitable for flat-bed truck type vehicles only: they're really suppliers of engines to a more "industrial" sector - like long distance haulage, big mining dump trucks and agricultural machinery - while it does beat the V12Tdi on torque, that's mostly because as you said, Audi had to limit it artificially to avoid exploding the gearbox. Otherwise an easy 1100lb/ft was possible. Factor in its full fat 500hp, when Cummins only musters 420, one begins to see just how advanced it was - not forgetting the Cummins is a 6.7 so has most of a whole litre extra capacity - making the Audi effort from 2009 yet more impressive. The most significant difference though, is it has a measly 6 cylinders! It's hard therefore to see how even tentative comparisons can be made, and what the value is of any such attempts. The latest Audi 4.0 V8TDIs are still shy on power and torque - but not by much that's for sure! 435PS and 900Nm is just 13% and 10% less than the V12's 500/1000 outputs despite 33% less volume. It's still only a V8 though, and just so much less interesting and unique - despite those highly impressive numbers. It wasn't that long ago that the C5 gen RS6s were trumpeting about 108hp per litre and yet here is a DIESEL car matching that. Nevertheless, the V12TDI was, and remains, absolutely unique - and I think for that, it deserves to be allowed its solitary and unquestioned disdain of "lesser machines" in perpetuity 😏
That R8 V12 was one of the best looking cars Audi ever made too! So sad it was never made. Apparently because the transmission couldn't handle the torque.
I once had one of those in front of my car, waiting on a red traffic light. He was towing a trailer with 2 horses in and when he pushed his throttle I certainly found my self in an astrological low pressure area!
I was behind a Q7 in Australia at some lights. It took off like a scalded cat,I looked and I thought I saw a V12 TDI badge. Never got near it to look again. It was near a Dealership.

They couldn't make a strong enough trans to handle it *that would fit in the R8. There's plenty of transmissions that will handle this engine, they just won't fit inside an R8.
6:24 The fact that no diesel passenger cars have exceeded 500hp probably has something to do with the fact that it would be pointless. Fast diesels are great, yes, but at the end of the day a fast gasser will always perform better. So even a performance diesel is always going to need to focus on diesel advantages - fuel economy and pulling capability - over or at least in concert with raw performance. Past 500 horsepower, that's probably rather difficult to do no matter how you get there. The 4.0TDI and BMW's tri-turbo 3-liter are considerably slower than equivalent gas powertrains despite pushing 500hp, yet the difference in efficiency between them and their gas rivals is much narrower than with lower-performing diesels. I wager the American Big Three's truck diesels will eventually break the 500hp barrier, but that's going to be a side-effect of what the companies are actually after; torque.
The current L5P Duramax was designed to produce 550hp and over 1000ftlbs, power was reduced by 100 across the board for the sake of the transmission. It’s not difficult to produce high HP diesel engines, companies like Heath, Banks and Wagler have been making very powerful light-duty diesels for many years. Problem is in, as you said, one must sacrifice the economy and bountiful low-end grunt to achieve 500 plus HP. Interestingly, large gas engines are having a bit of a comeback lately with GM and Ford currently offering 400+ci V8s in their big pickup trucks. Those big gas engines can produce better economy in mixed use conditions than the mighty diesels.
@Retired Bore I'm talking about passenger vehicles, not commercial ones. Commercial vehicles here go up to nearly 1000hp easily, but tractor trailers are a completely different universe from Ford F250s and Chevy 2500s.

@Retired Bore I really didn't need to. The American Big Three are General Motors, Fiat-Chrysler (or Stellantis, now), and Ford. None of those three make tractor trailers, which precludes my statement from including big rigs.
@Retired Bore Stellantis' status as American or European is at most questionable, considering it's the result of a merger - not a takeover - of a French company with a previously merged pair of Italian and American companies. It is at worst questionable to call it American since in part it still is. I'm quite well aware that there's an industry outside of the USA, hence why I referred to engines that they don't sell in the USA. VW has never offered the 4.0 TDI in the USA, nor has BMW's tri-turbo 3.0 diesel been offered here. But I suppose expecting people to understand that there's an automotive industry outside Europe was a mistake on my part. To be sure, I'll make sure to explain in excruciating detail the nature of Ram, Ford, and Chevy trucks rather than assuming I'm talking to someone who can infer from context of "American Big Three" when next this subject comes up.

Here in the US we do alot of "cash days" street races, which is basically where a bunch of people get together, all put money in a "pot" and drag race on an "unprepped" surface. winner takes all. The Golf Rs have been making waves with how good the AWD is. I've actually seen a couple races where modded Golf Rs walked through a field of legitimate, non street legal "race cars" like they were sitting still. Some race organizers have actually started banning AWD cars from their no prep events.

could you talk about european truck engines? theres some really powerfull production engines used day to day by some people even a basic engine setup for a semi is pushing like 460/500hp and they do that for 9 hours a day every single day of the year, very long lasting as i have seen a lot of 1 million km trucks some getting to 2 or more
When the Q7, Touareg and Ranger Rover came out. Before them there were only Mercedes ML and BMW X5 that were kinda the big boys of SUV category. The Range Rover, Q7 and Touareg were like space ships for that time. Now people are too spoiled with too many gadgets and technology, but back in the day those cars were simply brutal looking machines.

They are equiped in the first corvette,Chevy nova,and more,here in Brazil i see to much engines from this type,normally the 250-S that equiped the Omega and the unique Brazilian Muscle car,the Chevrolet Opala,this engines makes over 150hp in the car in the 70s,in a car that weight less than 1.100kg,because this combination this engine maked this car faster than a Charger V8 and a Maverick V8,but actually,some engines like this can make over 2000hp for drag races,so,for me they are a good base engine for tuning carburated inline sixes,so,here is my sugestion :)
considering this engine is based on two 3.0 V6 TDI engines, it should be capable of around 1000hp with stock internals (have a look at the darkside performance 3.0 TDI for reference)
Such an incredible engine ! I have a 2013 golf wagon with the cjaa tdi, 6 speed manual, dpf delete, 2.5" downpipe and exhaust and an ecu reflash. It is an incredible daily driver ! It’s supposed to have 180hp and 320ftlbs of torque according to the company that did the ecu reflash, and I still get an average of 5L/100km on the highway ! And very reliable too ! I’m at 220000km on it and the only major thing that broke was the dpf that was replaced under the dieselgate warranty. It’s such a shame that vw lied about the emissions because that engine was one of the best they ever made ! By the way, the chevrolet duramax Wikipedia page says that the power output range of the engine was from 250hp to 550hp, but I can’t find any information about the 550hp version ! If it’s a road going version that would beat the v12 tdi of 50hp ! Maybe you could do a little research and maybe a video about that one too ! Thanks for your awesome videos ! Design spec performance can exceed 550 bhp (410 kW) at 3050 rpm and 1,050 lb⋅ft (1,424 N⋅m) at 1975 rpm so basically no engines came with that much power but they can be tuned in stock form to make that much
Traditionally, V12 engines have been the smoothest and most well mannered of all and reserved for high-end luxury saloons and sports cars. Diesel engines, on the other hand, were great for trucks. What on earth were VAG thinking when they designed this engine ?
They probably thought they want to combine the great qualities of both efficient, torquey diesel and smooth luxury 12 cylinder gas cars. They pulled it off pretty well in my opinion. When i give a ride to people in mine that don’t know they have no clue what to make of it, usually they say it feels and sounds like a jet boat or jet turbine, it doesn’t sound like an internal combustion engine
5:54 Towing planes for an advertising campaign is so lame. A typical aircraft tug would only require around 120 HP / 89 kW Torque @ 2800 rpm (Diesel) 354 ft lbs / 480 Nm to tow a Boeing 757
but a tug has gearing to make up for it, they may even run hydraulic transmission. Doing the same job on a normal car transmission is very different thing.
Audi must make a hypercar for the road with a V12 as a tribute to the R10 TDI, with a 932BHP hybrid V12 engine that runs on renewable diesel HVO, a rival for the LaFerrari, Valkyrie, AMG 1, Delage D12 and Czinger 21C. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🏎️♻️ PD: If Volkswagen Group (controls Audi) went also for e fuels, biofuels and hydrogen (H2-ICE and fuel cells), they could bring V12 engines again, this time more efficient and running on renewable fuels 🏎️♻️, we need a balance, not go to the extreme. 🙏🏻🙌🏻
No it couldn’t replace a power stroke or a cummins because this is meant for racing, aka built for higher rpm, cummins and power stroke are made for low rpm, aka pulling 30k lbs uphill. All 3 are diesel engines but built for different purposes. Its definitely impressive. I personally own an F10 535d and its tuned, and yes higher hp diesels are nuts. I have a cummins as well tuned and a mk6 tdi lol. All for different purposes 😂
Had a couple of V10 TDIs, have some info on them, please feel free to contact me in case you need some info on them. If you are going to create a video about V10, please consider all 3 gens (euro 3 introduction(2003-2005.05: no oil for camshafts so fast warnout, poor castings lead to cracked cylinder heads and poor plasma coat on cylinders so it was falling apart under bad conditions), euro 3 revised (2005.06+: castings, cylinder heads oil check valves, camshaft oiling, solved plasma coating), euro 4 (slightly larger turbo compressor trim, slightly different cooling system, EGR cooler, DPF filter)) when searching for info on that one.
i swear that both the audi R10 tdi and the peugeot 908 HDi diesel have this weird almost space ship sound to them when you see them sweeping corners... why did the v12 turbo diesel had to be so short lived... it only saddens me the chances to delight one's senses with these mythical machines only grows fainter as they start to extinguish due to age....
3:46 The chain design is TOTAL rubbish! It is prone to premature wear and mounted at the rear of the engine, requiring engine removal to rectify. It's a typically German engine, great while it's running well, crazy expensive to fix if it isn't.
Actually the chain design is very reliable, i know from first hand experience having disassembled two with higher mileage. No stretch to see. The weak point is the oil pump hex drive shaft that tend to wear round and stop turning the oil pump. Similar to 2.0 tdi engines where thats quite common. However in the v12 it lasts 300-400.000 km before that becomes an issue. Should not be overlooked however because it can total the engine. Look at my disassembly video if you’re interested
@@faxxzc wrong. the local service has to change those around 200k on those garbage 3.0tdi audis. costs well over 2 grand to fix in eastern europe, probably 3-6k in the western.
600 bhp divided by 12= 50bhp per cylinder and then you've got all that weight to carry around and to get get off line and out of twistsys compare this to Mercedes-Benz 2.0 amg engine
I'm amazed they weren't all dumped onto the UK market, they'll buy a v12 *anything*, and made up a decent amount of the Lambo engined audis made for sale. No, not ones with Lambo derived engine blocks, ones factory fitted with actual Lambo engines. They only gained public notoriety after a car thief stole a v10 A5 and ran away from several police forces (including helicopters!) on his mad little crime spree....
The RS5 had a 4.2 FSI V8, which the 5.2 FSI was derived from (S6 / S8) and the R8 / Gallardo V10 was a further development from that. Apparently a newspaper hack saw this nugget of information, misinterpreted it and then claimed the RS5 had a V10. This bollocks then spread over the internet and here we are today.

Still got a 1.9 TDI in a Fabia VRS MK1, these diesels get more MPG than a smaller petrol engine so it offsets the cost. Diesel still works out cheaper in the UK, which is nice.

Packard made a 9-cylinder radial diesel for aircraft in the 1930's.
The most successful aircraft diesel was the Junkers 205/207 opposed-piston. They were in airline service in the 1930's and had some applications in WW2.
And I always thought the V10 TDI was the end all Volkswagen Audi diesel. Imagine that engine in an A8 sedan.

Wow, the VAG has always been ahead of the game as far as automotive technology goes, but we ALL know that this engine was so far ahead of the game and it was EXTREMELY well balanced with an awesome powerband and how often do you see a V12 diesel? I have to give it up to Audi/VW for this build. They really crushed it with the Q7 V12TDi.

Plus any new American diesel from a full size truck will make more horsepower and torque than this engine with just a tune. Literally no aftermarket hardware, just throw a tune on it and your already out performing the V12 TDI and probably still beating its reliability.

@@faxxzc well i’ve driven the SQ7 as a learner’s car when getting my hauling license. I’m temped to buy one, but because of shitty European emission regulations I started to think twice. My neighbour had an old Q7 with 4.2 V8 diesel which was not as spaceous as the SQ7 i’ve driven.
The SQ7 TDI much better than the Q7 V12 TDI in every single way. Sportier, torque output is almost identical Q7=1000 Nm vs. SQ7=900 Nm, on horsepower Q7= 500 HP vs SQ7= 435 HP. Despite the lower power output, the SQ7 is faster. The SQ7 got the more reliable and responsive ZF 8 speed gearbox instead of the less reliable ZF 6 speed gearbox. The SQ7 is faster than that road ship of yours because it’s a lot lighter, and it’s more modern. Plus it’s more fuel efficient. I bet you’d get even more power out of that V8 than that V12 because you’ve got more space under the hood of the SQ7 to do crazier mods than with that humongous V12 which weighs over 300 kg and doesn’t leave any room for bigger turbos etc. So you clearly don’t know what you’re talking about. I’d bet even the SQ5 V6 TDI would be faster than your roadship in a 0-60 and even a 1/4 mile race. Old diesels are 💩
@@orhankucuksahin6297 i bought a sq7 engine and transmission. i want to put two high pressure pumps which go up to 2500 bar from the sq7 into the v12 which has old tech 2000 bar pumps. darkside made me 2 gtd2872 turbos which should go to 800 hp easy. from a technical standpoint i can tell you the sq7 engine is much more stressed due to the hot v turbo layout, it is very common for those to heat soak. also you cant do much on the exhaust because they have all that stupid euro 6 adblue stuff. the computers are regulating it so you cant throw it out for less restriction. if the v12 had the zf 8hp it would smoke the sq7. however the 6hp32 is much more reliable than the 8hp. i havent heard of a single gearbox failure yet, but you see dozens in the sq7 sq8 a8 touareg and the jeep trackhawks that run the same trans.

Audi has a penchant for stuffing the most engine in the tightest spaces. It's not uncommon for the entire engine needed to be removed to replace a timing chain and tensioners which are not accessible any other way. Even a front mounted serpentine belt often requires the entire front bumper assembly and wheel well liners to be removed as well as the radiator partially unbolted for tilting making it more of a professional procedure than weekend warrior affair. In other words, to put the most engineered high-power engines in Audi vehicles means a dis-connect to ease of maintenance which Audi doesn't apologize for.

I remember when this engine was still in the testing stage and the problem at that point was that there was no transmission small and sturdy enough to withstand the torque developed by the engine. IIRC they stuffed one in an R8 as a prototype and had to put a Ford Transit van transmission in it for a fighting chance :)

The biggest advantage that the diesel has is the fact that diesel fuel has 17% more calories than petrol. The Audis made fewer fuel stops as it had better economy. It was still bloody fast but it’s economy was a massive factor. IMHO.
Higher energy density and also the diesel engine is more efficient by some 10% due to the higher compression and isobaric expansion

As a side note, the modern generation of all those engines (Cummins, Powerstroke, and Duramax) are all heavily under tuned from the factory. They will actually make more power and torque than the V12 TDI with just a tune, no aftermarket hard parts needed.

If anything diesel and electric combined in a car will be the future of power, using it as a range extender and having a way to spool up the diesel engine for added power to launch with electric will make some very quick cars. Freight train pulling power but for the road!

Naturally you have too many fans to even read never mind remember each comment but I recently responded to an older video about the best Audi engines. I mentioned I had worked for Audi franchises for nearly 20 years, during which time I had driven all except one of those featured. It may well have been the V12 TDI - we either had one at another branch where the Chairman was based, or we were going to get one but then didn't for some reason, it's that long ago, and even at the time, was that far removed from my job in finance on a different premises, the details are hazy. It would, for sure, have been interesting to try it!
Regarding the various comparisons, it seems rather a futile exercise as even then, any 12 cylinder was a real rarity - just a handful like Rolls Royce and Ferrari, but a diesel one? Although Cummins do design engines for automotive installation, I would tend to say in that case, suitable for flat-bed truck type vehicles only: they're really suppliers of engines to a more "industrial" sector - like long distance haulage, big mining dump trucks and agricultural machinery - while it does beat the V12Tdi on torque, that's mostly because as you said, Audi had to limit it artificially to avoid exploding the gearbox. Otherwise an easy 1100lb/ft was possible. Factor in its full fat 500hp, when Cummins only musters 420, one begins to see just how advanced it was - not forgetting the Cummins is a 6.7 so has most of a whole litre extra capacity - making the Audi effort from 2009 yet more impressive. The most significant difference though, is it has a measly 6 cylinders! It's hard therefore to see how even tentative comparisons can be made, and what the value is of any such attempts. The latest Audi 4.0 V8TDIs are still shy on power and torque - but not by much that's for sure! 435PS and 900Nm is just 13% and 10% less than the V12's 500/1000 outputs despite 33% less volume. It's still only a V8 though, and just so much less interesting and unique - despite those highly impressive numbers. It wasn't that long ago that the C5 gen RS6s were trumpeting about 108hp per litre and yet here is a DIESEL car matching that. Nevertheless, the V12TDI was, and remains, absolutely unique - and I think for that, it deserves to be allowed its solitary and unquestioned disdain of "lesser machines" in perpetuity 😏
108 HP per liter is also not much more than what the Daihatsu Charade GTti had. And certainly less than what the Honda S2000 had.

I just bought SQ7 Petrol V8 with 507 hp. What a machine! Fuel economy sucks, but screw it.
6:24 The fact that no diesel passenger cars have exceeded 500hp probably has something to do with the fact that it would be pointless. Fast diesels are great, yes, but at the end of the day a fast gasser will always perform better. So even a performance diesel is always going to need to focus on diesel advantages - fuel economy and pulling capability - over or at least in concert with raw performance. Past 500 horsepower, that's probably rather difficult to do no matter how you get there. The 4.0TDI and BMW's tri-turbo 3-liter are considerably slower than equivalent gas powertrains despite pushing 500hp, yet the difference in efficiency between them and their gas rivals is much narrower than with lower-performing diesels. I wager the American Big Three's truck diesels will eventually break the 500hp barrier, but that's going to be a side-effect of what the companies are actually after; torque.
The current L5P Duramax was designed to produce 550hp and over 1000ftlbs, power was reduced by 100 across the board for the sake of the transmission.
It’s not difficult to produce high HP diesel engines, companies like Heath, Banks and Wagler have been making very powerful light-duty diesels for many years. Problem is in, as you said, one must sacrifice the economy and bountiful low-end grunt to achieve 500 plus HP.
Interestingly, large gas engines are having a bit of a comeback lately with GM and Ford currently offering 400+ci V8s in their big pickup trucks. Those big gas engines can produce better economy in mixed use conditions than the mighty diesels.
@Retired Bore I'm talking about passenger vehicles, not commercial ones. Commercial vehicles here go up to nearly 1000hp easily, but tractor trailers are a completely different universe from Ford F250s and Chevy 2500s.

VW has never offered the 4.0 TDI in the USA, nor has BMW's tri-turbo 3.0 diesel been offered here. Here in the US we do alot of "cash days" street races, which is basically where a bunch of people get together, all put money in a "pot" and drag race on an "unprepped" surface. winner takes all. The Golf Rs have been making waves with how good the AWD is. I've actually seen a couple races where modded Golf Rs walked through a field of legitimate, non street legal "race cars" like they were sitting still. Some race organizers have actually started banning AWD cars from their no prep events.

could you talk about european truck engines? theres some really powerfull production engines used day to day by some people even a basic engine setup for a semi is pushing like 460/500hp and they do that for 9 hours a day every single day of the year, very long lasting as i have seen a lot of 1 million km trucks some getting to 2 or more
When the Q7, Touareg and Ranger Rover came out. Before them there were only Mercedes ML and BMW X5 that were kinda the big boys of SUV category.
The Range Rover, Q7 and Touareg were like space ships for that time. Now people are too spoiled with too many gadgets and technology, but back in the day those cars were simply brutal looking machines.
This again proves a choice of engine is critical when specing a vehicle and not to be fooled by the EV craze.

They are equiped in the first corvette,Chevy nova,and more,here in Brazil i see to much engines from this type,normally the 250-S that equiped the Omega and the unique Brazilian Muscle car,the Chevrolet Opala,this engines makes over 150hp in the car in the 70s,in a car that weight less than 1.100kg,because this combination this engine maked this car faster than a Charger V8 and a Maverick V8,but actually,some engines like this can make over 2000hp for drag races,so,for me they are a good base engine for tuning carburated inline sixes,so,here is my sugestion :)

considering this engine is based on two 3.0 V6 TDI engines, it should be capable of around 1000hp with stock internals (have a look at the darkside performance 3.0 TDI for reference)
I love my 1.9 TDI golf. Diesels are awesome, still not as magical as petrol but I like it anyway.
Such an incredible engine ! I have a 2013 golf wagon with the cjaa tdi, 6 speed manual, dpf delete, 2.5" downpipe and exhaust and an ecu reflash. It is an incredible daily driver ! It’s supposed to have 180hp and 320ftlbs of torque according to the company that did the ecu reflash, and I still get an average of 5L/100km on the highway ! And very reliable too ! I’m at 220000km on it and the only major thing that broke was the dpf that was replaced under the dieselgate warranty. It’s such a shame that vw lied about the emissions because that engine was one of the best they ever made !
By the way, the chevrolet duramax Wikipedia page says that the power output range of the engine was from 250hp to 550hp, but I can’t find any information about the 550hp version ! If it’s a road going version that would beat the v12 tdi of 50hp ! Maybe you could do a little research and maybe a video about that one too !

Traditionally, V12 engines have been the smoothest and most well mannered of all and reserved for high-end luxury saloons and sports cars. Diesel engines, on the other hand, were great for trucks. What on earth were VAG thinking when they designed this engine ?

A typical aircraft tug would only require around 120 HP / 89 kW Torque @ 2800 rpm (Diesel) 354 ft lbs / 480 Nm to tow a Boeing 757
but a tug has gearing to make up for it, they may even run hydraulic transmission. Doing the same job on a normal car transmission is very different thing.
Audi must make a hypercar for the road with a V12 as a tribute to the R10 TDI, with a 932BHP hybrid V12 engine that runs on renewable diesel HVO, a rival for the LaFerrari, Valkyrie, AMG 1, Delage D12 and Czinger 21C. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🏎️♻️

No it couldn’t replace a power stroke or a cummins because this is meant for racing, aka built for higher rpm, cummins and power stroke are made for low rpm, aka pulling 30k lbs uphill. All 3 are diesel engines but built for different purposes. Its definitely impressive. I personally own an F10 535d and its tuned, and yes higher hp diesels are nuts. I have a cummins as well tuned and a mk6 tdi lol. All for different purposes 😂

If you are going to create a video about V10, please consider all 3 gens (euro 3 introduction(2003-2005.05: no oil for camshafts so fast warnout, poor castings lead to cracked cylinder heads and poor plasma coat on cylinders so it was falling apart under bad conditions), euro 3 revised (2005.06+: castings, cylinder heads oil check valves, camshaft oiling, solved plasma coating), euro 4 (slightly larger turbo compressor trim, slightly different cooling system, EGR cooler, DPF filter)) when searching for info on that one.

It is prone to premature wear and mounted at the rear of the engine, requiring engine removal to rectify.
It's a typically German engine, great while it's running well, crazy expensive to fix if it isn't.
Actually the chain design is very reliable, i know from first hand experience having disassembled two with higher mileage. No stretch to see. The weak point is the oil pump hex drive shaft that tend to wear round and stop turning the oil pump. Similar to 2.0 tdi engines where thats quite common. However in the v12 it lasts 300-400.000 km before that becomes an issue. Should not be overlooked however because it can total the engine. Look at my disassembly video if you’re interested

@@faxxzc wrong. the local service has to change those around 200k on those garbage 3.0tdi audis. costs well over 2 grand to fix in eastern europe, probably 3-6k in the western.

I'm amazed they weren't all dumped onto the UK market, they'll buy a v12 *anything*, and made up a decent amount of the Lambo engined audis made for sale.
No, not ones with Lambo derived engine blocks, ones factory fitted with actual Lambo engines. They only gained public notoriety after a car thief stole a v10 A5 and ran away from several police forces (including helicopters!) on his mad little crime spree....
The RS5 had a 4.2 FSI V8, which the 5.2 FSI was derived from (S6 / S8) and the R8 / Gallardo V10 was a further development from that. Apparently a newspaper hack saw this nugget of information, misinterpreted it and then claimed the RS5 had a V10. This bollocks then spread over the internet and here we are today.
R8 v12 TDI would've been cool... Can see why they didn't do it though doesn't make a lot of sense.
