- In this weeks video I travel to Ireland to visit my friend Sandra Willis who has taken her narrowboat over and is now cruising the River Shannon, after cruising some of the Irish canals as well as Lough Derg. We visit lots of potential moorings on some of the huge loughs including PortRunny harbour, Roosky, Lough Key, Lough Ree, Lacarrow Harbour, Port Carrick and Athlone. We also travel to Galway in search of adventure and good pubs and then onto Athlone to visit Seans Bar - the oldest Pub in Ireland and experience proper Guiness, Irish Coffees and Live Irish Music...

Finally, someone did a Vlog on Irish canals. I've been wondering what the canal situation was in Ireland. Glad it was you that did it. You're more fun!! The Foxes (pre-chicken days) covered Scotland really well. I learned a lot from your Vlog. I even learned that not all boats are Ladies 😁
Thanks for watching Doug 😃🏴☠️
We took our 50 ft NB to Ireland in 1999 and had 2 years exploring. My advice is to use an Irish haulier to take your boat over as they will be doing a return load. The lakes are big and the wind comes up quick but be prepared to wait for the weather, it’s often best to start really early in the mornings. There seem to be a lot more moorings when we were there but also lot more boats. Lough Erene in the North is really worth exploring.
Fab David, Sandra has already started her adventure and is loving it now 😃🏴☠️
Yes. There is usually less wind in the morning. The wind tends to pick up late morning and then can get worse in the afternoon ... then usually (usually!) calms down in the evening. Best to leave as early as you can and moor up by late morning if you have a flat bottom NB.
I just slapped a powerful outboard on the back of mine and powered it over the Irish Sea. Each to their own...
Great seeing Sandra what an eye opener .
Yes .. it’s scary stuff Michael 😃🏴☠️
Love Sandra’s dogs love animals and her teeshirt

What a beautiful Irish adventure! 🤩
Thank you 😄🏴☠️
I've seen vids about fishing on Irish canals, but there's very little about the canal boating situation there so this is great. I believe there's a lot of potential for canal restoration in NI which is interesting. Thanks so much for this Heidi!
Thanks for watching 😃🏴☠️

Enjoyed your Ireland time and your friends very much.
Thank you 😊🏴☠️
Well well well Heidi I can see you're in you element ,great Pubs lots of
Music and Guinness too.
What a lovely bunch of people your friends are ,the cottage looks really nice.
Galway looks fantastic and well worth a visit too and the Guinness
is a real bonus. When I was sailing out of Manchester Guinness had
a ship called the Lady Patricia a tanker who brought Guinness from
Ireland to the uk .When we ever had a party we would visit
her and come back to our ship carrying buckets of the Brown Gold.
The Shannon looks really lovely I considered it for a vacation before
we emigrated but ended up on the Norfolk Broads instead which was really
enjoyable.
A great vlog Heidi I'm sure you enjoyed your trip I sure did
.Safe travels, take care and happy cruising. XXX
I can just see you sneaking off with a bucket of black stuff 😂😂 thanks for watching Ralph 😄🏴☠️
YOU are a blessing how else could a couple of old salts see such beauty 1000 points.
Aww thank you John 🏴☠️😄
Thanks for vlog
Thank you ❤️
You have the best friends! And of course that means YOU are the best of friends too. 🙂 My grandmother, Anna McNamara, was born along the shores of the River Shannon, and my birth name is Anna as well. And I have "Viking" DNA! Me hearties!!! Sandra is super at boat handling and keeping watch on the weather/wind. This video reminds me of cruising in Puget Sound in the USA and in the Canadian Gulf Islands, all on the west coast here, except that we also have tremendous tide height differences to deal with, four times a day. BUT, we don't have shallow draft flat bottom boats like the narrowboats, so the deeper keels on our boats help us a great deal. And yep, you gotta have balls. 🙂 LOL! oopsie, that place was built in 1584 and Christopher Columbus was here ... but Heidi, Christopher Columbus died in 1506, someone was twisting your tail. yikes. Still, that place has great super history. And I love your vlog, all things about it.
😂😂 I read it on the info board 😂😄 he must have come through before they built it then 😂 thanks again Ann - it was an amazing place 😄🏴☠️
My wife has family at Castleconnell, Mount Shannon and Portumna on the Shannon/Loch Derg, and in Galway. We paid for my Mum and Dad to have a week over there for their 50th Wedding anniversay. They has a lovely time, so we asked if they would go again, to which Betty replied "Oh no, why on earth would we want to do that. It's just like Yorkshire, we don't need to go there, we can stay at home". You don't get to choose your family.
😂😂 oh it was so amazing, but yes Yorkshire is gorgeous too 😂🏴☠️❤️
Great video.
Certainly enjoyed it. I had no idea that there was such large lakes there and never gave canals a thought. I learn something every time I view one of your presentations. Big thank you
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment 😄🏴☠️
Wonderful, love that video, one day maybe xx
Wow wait a minute this was better than a BBC production. Absolutely brilliant stuff guys very good and so funny too.The waterways are brilliant in Ireland but I have to say the river Barrow is my favourite.

Thanks Rosalind xxx
Loved this video
Thank you 😃🏴☠️
Another v interesting vlog😊, you are good you!
Been to both north n south Ireland, mostly south, been well pissed quite a few times in Galway, we always started our drinking in a Galway pub with a red Indian statue out front, also a wooden row boat inside, there was traditional music all afternoon, all musicians jamming, paid band started in the boat around 7pm, but by then we were fairly oiled up, Great country, always made most welcome.
They were very welcoming, thanks Andy 😄🏴☠️
WOW! just WOW!
Thanks Mick 😄🏴☠️
Good video. Very interesting
Glad you enjoyed it 😃🏴☠️
Brilliant, its given me confidence that its possible to live on board full time in Ireland. Would love to meet some of the boating community here, I live near Boyle and Carrick on Shannon if anyone is reading this.
Hi lilesosanna. Your best bet is to head down to the harbours either Boyle, Lough Key or Carrick & just chat to boaters down there. Unfortunately I'm a long way away this year as I'm just about to head into Dublin & do the River Liffey so I'm right across the other side of ireland! You can always follow Golden Boyz blog to see whereabouts I am. I should be back your way next year as intending on doing Lough Erne next year.
@@sandrawillis9281 thanks sandra have the blog bookmarked If you need crew on lough erne or even some one to make the tea to steady your nerves let me know
You never seem to disappoint us Heidi you're always bringing us terrific content, Ireland is a beautiful country and thank you for bringing it to all of us from your perspective and very educational as well, Happy Days girl😎🇨🇦
Thank you 😃🏴☠️❤️
Most enjoyable feel like I have been on holiday. What great friends you have safe journey back to your boat
Thanks Kath 😄🏴☠️
Go back to that cute waiter you had at that first pub. I had an aunt, homophobic pig but still, her husband was a Irish famous footballer David Clements. They loved over there for a few years and brought back the Irish Pub Storytelling, so one night at a family reunion we all had to go around telling stories. It was a blast
Sounds lovely Alan 😄🏴☠️
Loved it… what an awesome idea to share with the rest of us a first hand view of Ireland… and it’s waterways…and the different boats… looking forward to exploring the web in narrowboat travels over there… from the net of course…lol. Thank you so much for taking us along with you… you done did good…

Absaloutly amazing, what a great experience that would be and a cheaper way of seeing Ireland instead of paying hotel fees. Enjoy your trip.. 😊
Thanks Judie 😃🏴☠️

Thanks for joining us Kert 😄🏴☠️
Never fear Ralphie is here ,going to watch the vlog and buy a barrel of Guinness for you...back laterX
😂😂 thanks Ralph 😄🏴☠️
I wondered what had happened to Sandra since she gave up the dogging business. I thought she’d emigrated to Ireland to get away from you because you were such a bad influence on her. Now I see it was the other way round! I mean, just look at how she dragged you, kicking and screaming with your toes ploughing furrows in the pavements into those bars for a drink! Seriously, though, that was a fantastic video. Makes me want to go for a visit myself 🤩
😂😂 thanks Sheila … it was fabulous, I loved it 😄🏴☠️❤️
😂😂😂😂
What a super adventure that must be, taking a narrowboat across to Ireland. Thanks, Heidi I really enjoyed riding along with you on your Irish trip. What great buddies you have. All the best. Stephen

Oooh do it 😃🏴☠️ it was a fabulous place 😃🏴☠️
Hope Pudding is doing better.
He is doing great … he was on last weeks video 😃🏴☠️
About 40 years ago we and our two boys hired a cruiser from Carrick on Shannon to Lough Derg and back. Apart from the alarmingly large waves when we got to Lough Derg, which made us turn back, we found the locks on the river a bit of a drawback, as sometimes we had to wait an hour of two until the lock keeper felt there were enough boats to justify operating the lock. Perhaps things have changed over the years. We had one bit of excitement on Lough Ree when we found that we were towing a length of rope instead of a dinghy! We did get it back after a search.
Aww Tim, that sounds stressful …. Sandra had almost covered all of the canals and rivers now, she reckons another year and she would have completed Ireland 😃🏴☠️
wow Heidi absolutely brilliantly presented
total respect to Sandra - fantastic
so interesting & not a hangover in sight :)
😂😂 cheers Lloyd 🏴☠️
Thanks Lloyd
Im only sad I can upvote only once! Wonderful place and people too! You made me learn something too, never knew Eire had canals!
Oh Steve, I absolutely loved it and everyone was so friendly … such an amazing place 😄❤️🏴☠️
Oh my, how do I spell ENVIOUS? Yep, that I am! Thank you for the opportunity to go along!
Aww thanks for watching Vickie 😃🏴☠️
Crackin’! Going from the beautiful Peak Forest canal and on to gorgeous, spacious and fresh Ireland loughs, must be exhilarating! Happy journey, Pirate mrs
Back on the Peak next week though haha … but it was a lovely break 😃🏴☠️
Thanks for the video… Ireland 🇮🇪 is definitely a beautiful place…stay safe and take care !!
Thank you, it was a beautiful place 😃🏴☠️❤️
I met Jan and Allister in Ballyconnell on the Shannon Erne waterway back in 2018, I think. It's a beautiful barge they have. The Erne waterway is mostly in Northern Ireland. It is stunning and well worth the 16 lock stretch along the Shannon Erne Waterway. Check out Derryvunny at the top of Lough Key too.
What a great Vlog, wow ireland looks amazing what a fab lady to do that on her own, something we would love in a few years xx
Yes, she has some balls …. Thanks so much for watching and good luck on your own adventure 😃🏴☠️
Thank you Jacqueline
This was great. New information but still narrow boats.
Thank you 😄🏴☠️
Brilliant video, thanks. You leave Sandra`s balls alone LOL. Beautiful lady with attitude.
😂😂 she does have some huge ones 😂🏴☠️
