I find the random details they put in the story amazing. For example the artisan you find is the first version of Gerolt, the smith who makes relics for you through the series. Since he continued making kettles instead of weapons, he never met Rowena or became an alcoholic and thus he has a long mane of hair. The story with the man who lost his wife leads to a battle with a light warden in the mines, the light warden is called Forgiven Storge, which is defined as the unconditional love of a parent or familial bounds, considering the way the wife died and the fact that the warden is a female face with wings around it, leads me to believe we killed the man's wife as a warden, specially since wardens move from one body to another as they are destroyed.

It is not that Fire and Ice are related to stasis and creation, because that makes no sense. It's more that the ideas of Light = Astral = Active and Darkness = Umbral = Stasis is flipped. For Black Mages, what it should be called is Umbral Fire and Astral Ice, because Umbral/Darkness is actually Active, and Astral/Light is Stasis.
Astral and Umbral have nothing to do with how the elements actually function. It is just the interpretation of how the people think they are aspected. That was the point of Unrianger's explaination. Its not that people on the first or source are right or wrong.
@@Aleggraa No, it's Astral Darkness and Umbral Light. So the naming convention for Astral Fire and Umbral Ice is still accurate. That's still accurate. What's flipped is the perspective of what that means for Light and Darkness. Whether you see color as light (all colors together make white, thus Light is all elements working together and Darkness is no elements) or as pigment (all colors together make black, thus Darkness is all elements working together and Light is no elements) depends on what you see Light and Darkness as. This leads the people of the source to attribute darkness with with stasis and death, and light with life and change. On the first they note that light causes stasis and death, and dark causes life and change. So it's looking at 2 sides of a coin and calling it what color you see. Essentially - and put overly simply for sake of brevity - When a calamity occurs, a lot of light is used up, leaving more darkness, then eventually the light returns or the darkness dissipates enough for the 2 to return to balance, before the cycle starts over again. so light used - calamity - less light - balance - light used - calamity, over and over.

So I recently finished the MSQ and all patches for SHB and this is a wonderful recap. Your vids are always excellent, keep up the good work! Personally, I felt very conflicted (in a good way) playing through this expansion and honestly was not prepared for the amount of character development that went into ES. Having him be a villain that players could empathize with was a wonderful decision on the writer's end. It added an odd, but good, dissonance as an undercurrent to the whole imminent apocalypse thing the MSQ had going on. The whole thing kept me on my toes expecting a betrayal the entire time - and when it finally came after the fight with fat bastard it honestly made it that much sweeter to watch. This entire expansion was wonderfully done, and I really hope that Endwalker can live up to the expectations that Shadowbringers has instilled in us players.
At 20:00, if you're a Healer you'll also be healing him alongside Alphinaud. I think that's the only time Healers are relevant (outside of job quests related shenanigans) in MSQ tho.
Thoroughly enjoyed this as someone that loves the game but struggles to keep up with the plot at times. Looking forward to your casual wrap up of Endwalker :)
No nod to how Elidibus' "Warrior of Light" form is the Warrior of Light from the first game? The series Icon as invented by Yoshitaka Amano? This was the hypest shit when I saw it and I feel like it deserves a shoutout

I think the plan behind leaving the succession open was to make Varis bloodthirsty and ruthless so that he'd do anything to hold on to power. We kinda get inklings that before he rose to the throne, he was a pragmatist who wanted to rule the conquered peoples and not just genocide them (like Gaius). That or he just thought it'd be funny.
Likely also so that the other nations would be so strong that it would force Garlemald to be desperate enough to use something like Black Rose in the first place.
at 34:15 what shows is not exactly incompetence of the writers. From what we can hear in various dialogues and descriptions there are things that conduct aether better than others, some even unable to conduct it at all. Not to mention that it is widely used as an energy source. That would mean aether is more similar in nature to electricity than light which, unlike electricity, can travel without a conductor. Therefore I think it wouldn't be that far off to assume that aether located somewhere in space isn't visible to Yshtola.
The opposite could also be possible, aether could travel from stars from to earth and be visible to Yshtola, however in that case it would make Yshtola's perception of day and night exactly the same.
Yet another possibility is that Yshtola simply doesn't see the same way with aether as she did with her eyes and she was asking for a description not because she can't see the night sky but because she'd like to know what it looks like to someone with uninjured eyes.
34:15 ok, but if you are going to ask ANYONE to paint you a picture with words, Urianger got all the fancy paint and tools to do it with. That man describing the night sky was fine af.
pleassse did u notice the dude that offers you wine then gets killed by a sineater in shadowbringers, is the guy you rode into eorzea with in the opening cutscene of a realm reborn with alphanaud and alisea... when i saw my serotonin levels jumped but then he died so it was kind peeposad
I rushed through the Shadowbringers story when the expansion came out and now I came back to it mid the questline where you look into WoL and it was a big WTF moment. Sucks to play knowing about 0 of the story. This was just the summary I needed. Better than the story itself tbh. Thank you
“The writers don’t know what Y’shtola can and can’t see” SPOILERS for Endwalker But if all the stars are dead and lifeless, than they wouldn’t give off much perceivable Aether, right?
@@aedrix4778 I would imagine that is still the case, or rather in all likelihood ambient aether, like say the Celestial Aether discussed briefly in Endwalker, would basically make it impossible to see the stars beyond it if all you perceive is aether. Like a mist blocking far of view. But the above might also be true.
After watching all of these MSQ videos, all I can say is that while I disagree without about the impact of both Haurchefant's sacrifice and Seto & Ardbert's final conversation, I do at least understand the sentiment because the way you feel about Seto & Ardbert is the way I feel about Haurchefant and the way you feel about Haurchefant is the way I feel about Seto & Ardbert. I guess things hit different for different people. That said, I totally choked up a little bit right before Amaurot when the Warrior of Light/Darkness has a chat with Ryne and one of the dialogue options was basically "a smile better befits a hero."
Now that you've done all the MSQ, Chair. Any plans to do similar videos about side content, beast tribes, notable side stories, the primals/kami, class stories, etc?
You're absolutely right about the writers being confused about y'shtola can actually see, because an endwalker crafter quest line straight up confirms and revolves around stars giving off Aether.
Didn't finish the whole video yet, but there *was* a little confusion on what the Meol reveal meant. The Meol isn't what turns people into sin eaters, Vauthry, The Lightwarden does. Having the Meol in their bodies makes Vauthry's control much more effective since it's like a benign infection with light. It wasn't a "you'll live, but probably as a sin eater." It was more of a "We just so happen coincidentally feed people sin eater after turning people into sin eaters, in an effort to make them controllable by Vauthry." Basically, the painter getting thrown into the ocean to die isn't the usual way Eulmore gets rid of people who have outlived their usefulness. Usually they get "ascended" and then killed and fed to the others to ensure their compliance with Vauthry's sin eater mind control.
I don't usually like to double comment, but it's incredible how even through all the snark Misshapen Chair injects, you can still feel how incredible the story of Shadowbringers really is. 11/10 would develop a yandere fairy fetish again.

DPS;: We all focus on Titania
Wipe and repeat.
"Magnus's wife [A miner] BURIED HERSELF in her work..."
0_0 word choice is chop notch
20:21 This is my first time seeing him back there!!
Man, love getting your opinions. Reading between the lines and understanding the meaning.
Over 1 hour, we've been blessed \o/
Stormblood solidified me as a raider. Shadowbringers solidified me a cutscene enjoyer.
What an amazing recap. Your style and humor are always a great listen. Now if only you could just stop killing your static.
No nod to how Elidibus' "Warrior of Light" form is the Warrior of Light from the first game? The series Icon as invented by Yoshitaka Amano?
This was the hypest shit when I saw it and I feel like it deserves a shoutout
I love these somewhat serious summaries because you actually tell the nuances and the important bits of everything that happens. Keep it up!
this video is actually super important, thanks so much bro. didn't think i'd get my lore recap from this channel lol
I feel Y'shtola being unable to see the stars is less that they don't give off aether, and more that they are so damn far away she couldn't hope to even perceive them
"The stars do not give off aether..."
...OH MY GOD...IT WAS IN FRONT OF US ALL THIS TIME!
oh for fucks sake
12:09 Man this comment aged well in Endwalker
12:50 Real upset that we didn't get to see Estinien saving our butts and princess carrying us to Aymeric
I really appreciate your elaborating and the this is the content Ive always looking for. I never look deep into the story, just because the slow ass cutscene is too horrible to endure, but I would like to know all the stories and your takes on them. Keep doing it, Id love to see more of them.
44:37 I think I remember one of the twins saying that we're not killing them. Only weakening them
'Zenos figuring out immortality off screen' FUCKING DEAD
In other words, Lyse is irrelevant. YES GOD YES.
maybe they can relyse the old and we get a good lyse in endwalker?
Y'shtola can see the stars, but the very atmosphere is also suffused with aether, so she probably cant see very far out.
Holy crud it was a long vid. I had it playing while fate grinding. Didn't notice the length till the end. Great summary of the story!
I like the no bullshit approach between this and the more lore based videos im getting caught up on all the skipping ive done. Ill watch my cutscenes from now on. I just always feel bad making the party wait
The one detail I loved in patch content was that elidibus-mwde Zenos broke control and basically disintegrated of its own volition, because not even an unsundered Ascian understands this maniac.
I love Zenos man.
I hadn't heard about you till a few weeks ago(watched your Mahjong video)...but damn you have a way of wording things for smooth brained people like myself. Thank you for this amazing 1hr and 20m video recap before EW releases. P.s. I also can't stop playing mahjong. So thanks for that too :)
endwalker spoilers
12:03
that aged really really well
I came back here *just* to say this.
I just watched all the others like 2 days ago this is clutch
I love this summary, I watched most of the story but you definitely hit some points that I missed!
I can imagine how long it took to make this video. Thanks for the hard work. This video was awesome.
i love you for this. ive played the whole game i know the store but i am very entertained with your way of telling it.
rewatching this vid; you did a damn good job chair
Mist Dragon "Impossible content" Laughable unless you were pugging when it first came out.. my god people would make sure to run from heals and stand in all the bad.
legit did this fight last month. legit wiped 3 times to it cause we were three newbs (to the fight) and one returning player that hadnt done the fight in forever.
@@Xenmaru00 If you're talking about the story innocence trial, people seem to have a lot of trouble focusing one mob at a time during the add phase, I've seen it said the add phase is harder to do with pugs on story mode than the extreme version lol. Also people don't know right away how to avoid Hades hand swipes, or the doom part.
@@zeehero7280 Nah i meant Mist Dragon. None of us knew what we were doing and it was actually kinda fun figuring out how the fight worked.
@@Xenmaru00 i will never like mist dragon, i've done it a total of like 4 times and i will never enjoy doing it enough to fully get it. i'll stick with fun dungeons like twinning or Ghymlit
That Titania comment really hits home. Who would have thought a simple normal trial to bring so much pain.
"which means Lyse is irreverent"
Thank fucking god
holy fuck
Multiple, so many, many nice details in your script
Such summerization! this was not my intention!
12:13
I wonder if he still holds true to this statement
when ardbert reunites with seto I"M NOT CRYING YOU"RE CRYING
at 34:15 what shows is not exactly incompetence of the writers.
This was thoroughly entertaining. If you make a video this long again, I will watch it!
> as you decide to buy some food that would probably only be appealing to Haachama.
Dude. DUuuude. I was not ready for that at 4 am.
Okay I lost it at "More Donuts". That was clever as hell.
34:15 ok, but if you are going to ask ANYONE to paint you a picture with words, Urianger got all the fancy paint and tools to do it with. That man describing the night sky was fine af.
ahhh "Little Sun"
Dont we love Y'shtola
Legit yesterday I was wondering when he was gonna upload the shadowbringers part.
pleassse did u notice the dude that offers you wine then gets killed by a sineater in shadowbringers, is the guy you rode into eorzea with in the opening cutscene of a realm reborn with alphanaud and alisea... when i saw my serotonin levels jumped but then he died so it was kind peeposad
I rushed through the Shadowbringers story when the expansion came out and now I came back to it mid the questline where you look into WoL and it was a big WTF moment. Sucks to play knowing about 0 of the story. This was just the summary I needed. Better than the story itself tbh. Thank you
“The writers don’t know what Y’shtola can and can’t see”
SPOILERS for Endwalker
But if all the stars are dead and lifeless, than they wouldn’t give off much perceivable Aether, right?
How had I not noticed that, I just thought when she couldn't see the night sky in the First it was because they were too far away
They actually can't even teleport considering it's been stated to great an Aether to do so outside of us.
It wasn't a "you'll live, but probably as a sin eater."
It was more of a "We just so happen coincidentally feed people sin eater after turning people into sin eaters, in an effort to make them controllable by Vauthry."
Basically, the painter getting thrown into the ocean to die isn't the usual way Eulmore gets rid of people who have outlived their usefulness. Usually they get "ascended" and then killed and fed to the others to ensure their compliance with Vauthry's sin eater mind control.
"Food that would probably only be appealing too Haachama" is a description I did not see coming but it's amazing.
I love how you have an AVGN take on this video. it freaking rocks.
Yeah I’ve played through the campaign, watch this vid a couple of times, doesn’t stop it from being a good bedtime story though
NO! I DIDNT CRY ON ARDBERT AND SETO! YOU ARE THE ONE CRIED!
I cried like shit that part :'(
I don't usually like to double comment, but it's incredible how even through all the snark Misshapen Chair injects, you can still feel how incredible the story of Shadowbringers really is. 11/10 would develop a yandere fairy fetish again.
I'm here for a refresher because my memory is terrible.
(You should re-post this video!)
misshapen: asks us to tell him never to make a video this long
me: "pls make the endwalker vid doubly long PLSSSSS"
this is genuinely one of the best videos on youtube
I recently just found your channel and I absolutely love all the videos that you made about ff14. Keep it up!
I knew I loved you, but the Haachama drop, ❤️❤️❤️
@26:21 this part cracks me up lmao... So true, Don't rely on my crafting skill I only made the same thing that requires the cheapest materials over and over until I get to level 80.
If that prince dude did get with Yshtola then every man and some women would hunt him down.
