    Something I should mention: While AF is a huge deal to many (and I'm also in this group!), the editing/testing/pacing and ultimately the narrative of the video was about the new X-M5 camera. Knowing I only had the unit for less than a week, I could have either 1.) done a singular AF-only video on this camera and not much else, or 2..) do a segment on AF (which I did test more than any other feature) but also include all the other camera features. I ultimately went with #2 because this video really is about the X-M5 as a whole. However, I'm sure somebody will do a full-blown, dedicated, and more comprehensive video on just the AF of this camera.

      Do you know if it was the final firmware (sorry, if it was answered in the video, I skipped some parts a bit)

      Thank you for the video ! Testing the autofocus with shallow depth of field would have given an idea as to what to expect from the November AF fix update. Now folks are wondering if pics were in focus because it was shot around f5.6 or its because Fuji really did fix something this time around.Thank you nonetheless, this was an amazing review!

      @@pal2tech You need to take a series of photos with AF achieved (i.e green box). Then see in post on a monitor how many of these images, in the AF box specifically, are actually in focus.
      Because what the camera screen shows is useless. The rate of false positives is remarkably high on Fujifilm.

    Hi Chris, thank you so much for including the AF section.
    It is pretty clear, and pretty sad that the false positives still persist.
    If you can see around the 24:00 mark the white box is in your face, while the background of your studio is actually sharp while your face is blurry.
    This is not looking goof if that is the suppossed new firmware coming in November, but fingers crossed it will be patched before release.

      24:22 He says that he is "acquired" but the wall is the one in focus. He is simply nearer the focal point (where the shelf is as well) as it is a deeper dof. But no, he is not in focus, he's only looking at the white box which isn't in synch with the actual AF.

Just need to wait if the next firmware will make the AF as good as in the X-M5 now is also to other cameras. That would be a big help in a bird photography what I'm doing a lot. Putting all the ports on the right side instead of the left side where they would obstruct the display hinge is honestly genius! I really really pray that Fuji manage to fix their AF issues because the rest of their designs are just so genius. Happy X-T5 user.

    • @lokitomanny
      @lokitomanny Місяць тому

      Well, they fix one thing to break another, I still think they can do better, what I mean is, by moving the ports from the left side to the right side, that created another set of problems, the memory card had to go with the battery behind the tripod plate, and when you have all the cables connected to the right side, you no longer can hand hold the camera, you loose your ability to grip the camera, so in order to use all the ports, you have to set the camera on a tripod. So they fix one thing to break another. They should create a dongle, where you connect one plug to the camera, and at the other end you will have all your connection ports available.

    24:33 The DOF is enormous here, and the camera still can't keep up, imagine shooting with a narrow DOF, nothing that's moving towards the camera will ever be in focus.
    25:15 the side to side movement is completely irrelevant for the autofocus, no idea what that is supposed to demonstrate. A simple test of the subject moving towards the camera with something like the 90mm f/2 would've been more than enough to give us an idea, this test seems like you're doing everything you possibly can to make it easy for the AF, and it still falls on its face.

    Not convinced here about the AF improvements. Subject detection lock on is not the same as being in focus. False positive locks have been an issue. You can even see it in your own video here, focus box on your eye but the actual focus is on the back wall. Looks like more of the same issue all over again. The AFC shot of the dog you're at f5.2 and 38.5mm. I can pause it and see that the DOF is not very shallow. I'll wait to see a more comprehensive test.

  • @sffiremedic

    Great review!. The improvement is a vast step in the right direction, but I am skeptical. The issue with both my X-T5's was that when the square would light up green over the subject's eye, in Lightroom the image was obviously not sharp. Yes, I print 16x 20 so am more critical. The second issue I see is that the X-M5 seemed to focus briefly on the face, and sometimes eyebrow before settling on the eye view the running woman footage) And the dog footage you revealed that several images were "not there". Keep in mind the X-M5 is 26MP, we all know that with the Fuji 40MP sensor cameras, focus is more difficult to achieve because the enhanced resolution shows even more when the focus is perfect. Viewers here will no doubt hate me for saying this, but I mention it as what the current state of autofocus is. While being a Fuji fanboy exclusively for 10 years, I sold my two cameras and all the zooms when I picked up a Nikon FZ. This camera instantly and always got to the eye only, and never gives me false positives in the viewfinder. So, instead of comparing the X-M5 with the X-T5, I would like to see a comparison with the latest Nikon/Sony/Canon cameras. I kept three Fuji primes in the fervent hope that the next 40MP camera will finally catch up in the AF arena. And BTW there are cameras way better at AF than my two FZ's. I think Fuji needs to up their game with a dedicated AF AI chip similar to what Sony has achieved with their top camera. I would be happy to pay the cost.

On the Xt5 , everything was blurry (BG or FG) on the Xm5. Almost all of the time, even if the white small box was on your eyes, it was your BG was in focus not on you. I have been following this channel and the work for years. there's a lot of great work and performance here, but I don't agree with how autofocus and autofocus in general are tested. the conditions and testing are done in such a way that Fuji at least somehow turns out reasonable. It does not correspond to real use and the results are several levels worse (my personal experience with xt4 and h2s = sold after years of use. fuji does not have reliable autofocus and what I have learned in three years is that when something in the green frame is not meant, that it's always sharp :D and that everything has to be done several times when taking pictures, because it's not sharp). try a lens with a small aperture on the xt5 or this camera and get inspired in the tests below:

      @TRISTRAMY The camera is fine, the autofocus is still way behind. I watched other reviews and it lags behind or just hunts. I'm really disappointed. I bought an X-T30II and I keep getting green confirmation box when it's supposedly focused and a lot of the time they are not. I tried with 5 different lenses and it consistently fails. I'm just done with Fuji until they fix it. The key thing here is that people keep pointing out the confirmation box but that doesn't mean it's focused.

    When the X-M5 was announced, I wasn’t initially interested. I already have my (slightly inconsistent) X-T5 for photography. Also no EVF. But then I started thinking about getting the X-M5 to replace my Sony ZV-1 for content creation as the X-M5 has a bigger sensor, a floppy screen, more features, a touch screen that works, and I can reuse my existing Fuji glass on the X-M5. Bonus! I still have the battery charger from my old X100v! So yeah. Looks good. But I really like the review here and inspired me even more to pick one up when it releases for sale.

    Comprehensive video Chris. You put a lot of effort into the videos and it shows….and is greatly appreciated by your viewers. Thank you!!
    Compared to the X-S20, with the same sensor and processor combo, would you agree that the three advantages the X-M5 has are, price, size factor, and better port positioning (in Vlog mode in particular). For everything else, the X-S20 is better or same. Fair assessment?

    • @pal2tech
      @pal2tech  2 місяці тому +1

      Absolutely. Would also add that audio is much better on X-M5. But the X-S20 is also an outstanding camera - would agree!

    Great job, as usual, Chris ! BUT I was waiting for your opinion on how much fun it wont be to shoot without an EVF. Relying on the LCD seems pathetic, especially out in broad daylight with a bright sun at your back which makes it extremely difficult to see any details on an LCD. IMHO Fuji blew it on this approach. Is eye af box more sticky tracking on the X-M5 due to faster processor chip or firmware algorithm?
    When the X-H2/T5 released I didn't like the af box lagging behind the subject. Bought a Sony A7RV instead since it was butter smooth glued to subject.
