Something I should mention: While AF is a huge deal to many (and I'm also in this group!), the editing/testing/pacing and ultimately the narrative of the video was about the new X-M5 camera. Knowing I only had the unit for less than a week, I could have either 1.) done a singular AF-only video on this camera and not much else, or 2..) do a segment on AF (which I did test more than any other feature) but also include all the other camera features. I ultimately went with #2 because this video really is about the X-M5 as a whole. However, I'm sure somebody will do a full-blown, dedicated, and more comprehensive video on just the AF of this camera.

The lack of in-body stabilization is a real pain for those of us who rely on compact lenses as the perfect match for these very compact bodies, as most prime lenses don't come with in-lens stabilization, while zoom lenses tend to be large.
@@Haggettco well, it really depends on your usage. If you are content creator (video) with this little camera and a gimbal you are in a pretty good place. Well, they fix one thing to break another, I still think they can do better, what I mean is, by moving the ports from the left side to the right side, that created another set of problems, the memory card had to go with the battery behind the tripod plate, and when you have all the cables connected to the right side, you no longer can hand hold the camera, you loose your ability to grip the camera, so in order to use all the ports, you have to set the camera on a tripod. Great review!. The improvement is a vast step in the right direction, but I am skeptical. The issue with both my X-T5's was that when the square would light up green over the subject's eye, in Lightroom the image was obviously not sharp. Yes, I print 16x 20 so am more critical. The second issue I see is that the X-M5 seemed to focus briefly on the face, and sometimes eyebrow before settling on the eye view the running woman footage) And the dog footage you revealed that several images were "not there". Keep in mind the X-M5 is 26MP, we all know that with the Fuji 40MP sensor cameras, focus is more difficult to achieve because the enhanced resolution shows even more when the focus is perfect. Viewers here will no doubt hate me for saying this, but I mention it as what the current state of autofocus is. While being a Fuji fanboy exclusively for 10 years, I sold my two cameras and all the zooms when I picked up a Nikon FZ. This camera instantly and always got to the eye only, and never gives me false positives in the viewfinder. So, instead of comparing the X-M5 with the X-T5, I would like to see a comparison with the latest Nikon/Sony/Canon cameras. I kept three Fuji primes in the fervent hope that the next 40MP camera will finally catch up in the AF arena. And BTW there are cameras way better at AF than my two FZ's. Would be interesting to see an EVF only version, people could use a phone for a screen via the app and blue tooth, which be better than the screen as you can hold it in your hand in any location, while the EVF would give a belter hand held .
Surely better. More light, better AF. Some people think, they hat to close the aperture for a deeper depth of field. That steals light the AF needs and makes the AF worse. Shoot open.
Autofocus and motion tracking accuracy - Sony A6000 is still WAY ahead of the current X-T5, latest firmware. Fact. X-T5 AF is almost unusable for fast action, like birds in flight.

Sure you tested that the AF seems to be more sticky (as seen on the recorded EVF) however, were the images captured sharp? the main issue with the xt5 is not that the AF is not sticky but rather the huge amount of false positives.

@@pal2tech Really? You didn't have the time to have a subject walk towards the camera, shot with a narrow depth of field, and check if the images are actually in focus? Seriously?
@TRISTRAMY The camera is fine, the autofocus is still way behind. I watched other reviews and it lags behind or just hunts. I'm really disappointed. I bought an X-T30II and I keep getting green confirmation box when it's supposedly focused and a lot of the time they are not. I tried with 5 different lenses and it consistently fails. I'm just done with Fuji until they fix it. The key thing here is that people keep pointing out the confirmation box but that doesn't mean it's focused.
When the X-M5 was announced, I wasn’t initially interested. I already have my (slightly inconsistent) X-T5 for photography. Also no EVF. But then I started thinking about getting the X-M5 to replace my Sony ZV-1 for content creation as the X-M5 has a bigger sensor, a floppy screen, more features, a touch screen that works, and I can reuse my existing Fuji glass on the X-M5. Bonus! I still have the battery charger from my old X100v! So yeah. Looks good. But I really like the review here and inspired me even more to pick one up when it releases for sale.
Comprehensive video Chris. You put a lot of effort into the videos and it shows….and is greatly appreciated by your viewers. Thank you!! Compared to the X-S20, with the same sensor and processor combo, would you agree that the three advantages the X-M5 has are, price, size factor, and better port positioning (in Vlog mode in particular). For everything else, the X-S20 is better or same. Fair assessment?
@@pal2tech Good point, the inbuilt microphones on the X-M5 are also an improvement. Thanks again!! PS - you gave some advice to me last year when I bought my X-S20, still enjoy it as well. Cheers!

Please compare the quality of hdmi outputs. How long can the camera stay open at the highest settings? What is the resolution in webcam mode? Thank you.
Great job, as usual, Chris ! BUT I was waiting for your opinion on how much fun it wont be to shoot without an EVF. Relying on the LCD seems pathetic, especially out in broad daylight with a bright sun at your back which makes it extremely difficult to see any details on an LCD. IMHO Fuji blew it on this approach. Slainte !
XM5 is good and would be better if XM5 come with EVF During safari with strong sunlight, evf is much better than the screen Btw, I am wondering the comparison of autofocus performance between XM5 and XS20.
Is eye af box more sticky tracking on the X-M5 due to faster processor chip or firmware algorithm? When the X-H2/T5 released I didn't like the af box lagging behind the subject. Bought a Sony A7RV instead since it was butter smooth glued to subject.

Obviously i went straight to the AF section 😆 Good news, will watch the rest now. 😄
It's still bad. When they consider fixing it, I will consider buying Fuji again.
@@rem792 I don't think that the X-M5 is "bad" it's just not industry leading.
Same🤣
@TRISTRAMY The camera is fine, the autofocus is still way behind.
@@rem792 Just switch. There's a company called Cobalt Image and it gives great Fuji colours on every other brand.
Loved that opening!!
wow wow wow, I want that camera so much!!! Thanks a lot for video, u are grait story teller 😀👍👍👍
Wow., very good detailed video...
Hello useful review. I bought this camera recently as a beginner digital photographer. Can I use the beginner setup guide from the XT5?
Comprehensive video Chris. You put a lot of effort into the videos and it shows….and is greatly appreciated by your viewers. Thank you!!
Compared to the X-S20, with the same sensor and processor combo, would you agree that the three advantages the X-M5 has are, price, size factor, and better port positioning (in Vlog mode in particular). For everything else, the X-S20 is better or same. Fair assessment?
Absolutely. Would also add that audio is much better on X-M5. But the X-S20 is also an outstanding camera - would agree!
@@pal2tech Good point, the inbuilt microphones on the X-M5 are also an improvement. Thanks again!! PS - you gave some advice to me last year when I bought my X-S20, still enjoy it as well. Cheers!
Is this a Micro Four Thirds canera?
Thanks Chris for all that testing. Dont let the trolls (the hate) move your content.
So as the processor/sensor combination is basically the same as on the X-S20, are there differences in IQ?
Ofcourse not!
Baby xs20
@@nandysullivan3005 That's what it looks like. Not bad, as the X-S20 is an awesome little hybrid camera. (but the X-M5 is prettier …)
hybrid withh af terrible :D
This camera seems really badass! It's the perfect easy going walk around camera!
Great review, I know that took some time. When you were testing the audio in your studio did you have stab on or off? Thanks new sub!
Great video, but who keeps stomping?
Great review as always, Chris!
The review i ve been waiting for,
The X-S20 also has these Auto settings
How does it compare to the Ricoh GR 3 size wise ?
Nice video Chris.
AF is still trash. Should've done it with a wide aperture lens instead of stopped down to F5.4. XM5 looks stickier but still gives false positive. Thanks for the test.
Perhaps the false positive were motion blur instead of a AF problem. I agree, we need serial photos with open aperture.
Why so mad @Iamtongue , You dont know that you need to customize your settings ? F8 is the key
@@Powerland56 Woow my friend powerland are you switching sides entering the dark side ?
I'm loving the popcorn here.
I will wait for edvard’s test.
Hey there’s a guy with a chainsaw and camera at the park scaring the ducks, haha. Great vid thank you. I preordered the x m5 for my wife. Thanks again
Does this one have bluetooth? Or some sort of using an app so that you can transfer photos directly to phone ? 😊
At 5:07 "...for people that (sic) know nothing about cameras or settings or Fujifilm." Is this really the right camera for them? What is a good camera for such people?
So what kind of stabilisation should we use when shooting with lens with/without ios?❤
Where did you get the t-shirt? I need more long sleeve shirts.
My boy Chris with the new video droppppp!
What lens did you use in the high ISO tests?
How does it compare to the X-S20? Im not sure how the X-T5, M5 and S20 relate.
Is this basically a modern updated version of the x-a5?
Hey can I put filter on the 15-45mm lens kit?
Thanks again for a very informative review. My question concerns the three holes for audio - won’t dust enter the camera through those holes?
Please compare the quality of hdmi outputs. How long can the camera stay open at the highest settings? What is the resolution in webcam mode? Thank you.
Fantastic video! Thanks for this
Great job, as usual, Chris ! Slainte !
This was a fun review!
XM5 is good and would be better if XM5 come with EVF
During safari with strong sunlight, evf is much better than the screen
Btw, I am wondering the comparison of autofocus performance between XM5 and XS20.
Is eye af box more sticky tracking on the X-M5 due to faster processor chip or firmware algorithm?
When the X-H2/T5 released I didn't like the af box lagging behind the subject. Bought a Sony A7RV instead since it was butter smooth glued to subject.
Great video Chris. Thanks for all the info. Oh can you make a video with just your dancing 🕺. Give some dance tips please.
