The worst part about this scene is that none of the people around Flint knows how he really feels.
Nobody in this village ever experienced sadness like this, so anything they could think to say would ring hollow.
Lucas knows how it feels. R.I.P claus and hinawa
George 123 Not really? all the people he hit and the people in town forgave him, and everyone in town loved Hinawa. Characters even try to be supportive saying that they won’t understand what he’s going through.
Judging from Porky's dialogue, one can assume that the world they lived in was some kind of experiment to create a new ideal world without darkness and suffering, likely after some apocalyptic scenario. But Porky couldn't resist being the child that ruins it all just for kicks and reintroducing humanity to evil and sin.
When Bronson has says he has no idea how to tell flint this… he really meant it they never experience something like this.

I like to think that disliking this scene is another way of announcing that you have no soul.
rabbidluigi Wow what an ancient comment my guy
I enjoy your work good sir.

Masked man huh
Maybe they disliked it for hating this scene for making them trauma and sad from the reaction, they cant fathom how real this sad truth can be and cant bring themselves to like the very thing that haunts them and saddens them
The way the sound goes silent when Hinawas death is told of...
The way Flint punches the ground...
The way he loses his mind in rage, attacking people he knows...
Its all so real.
Thats what makes this scene so effective, realism can have an extreme impact if its done right, and this is a prime example.
Yeah, too many pieces of media rely too much on visual realism and can oftentimes forget this form of realism, if there's a name for it, this form of emotional realism.
this scene is legitimately the most realistic reaction to shock and grief ive ever seen.
i know its common to be dramatic, because drama and film go hand in hand. but this was.. uncomfortably real.
i remember also having a similar set of circumstances. i was out at night, looking for my old pet who meant so many amazing things to me had taken unusually long to come back.
then i had my flint moment while looking about when i did find them. their condition was so puzzling to me, because everything i knew, the way i knew things were- what happened to them made no sense to me. i still dont fully understand or know what happened to them, i still wish i knew to this day.
just, everything about this scene was exactly how I felt. i didn't hit/hurt anybody but my body wanted to just, scream. wanted to tense until it couldn't anymore. while, in my head I was just thinking, why? what? who? how?
i was on my knees, i was on the floor. i couldn't get up after a point, it felt like my body was ready to give out/i was in so much physical pain too from the sheer stress and shock.
The name of this track is perfect; "confusion". thats all i could feel in that moment. so many questions- so much pain and confusion, while no one around me could really understand. genuinely, just one of the most personally close to home scenes ive ever seen in a video game. just one of those scenes that made me realize the person who wrote this really lived life and knew how people work.
I don't think Bronson was a douchebag. Remember, this village has never known crime or violence. Maybe he didn't know how to handle this problem properly and ended up being too straightforward.
Who knows, if it was another villager who had found the fang maybe (s)he would have reacted in a similar way.
I wish more people understood this.
Bronson really tried to be a good guy here but due to inexperience with this sort of stuff he may have triggered Flint's anger instead.
SPOILER leder said it good in his speech in chapter 8. they don't know anger, etc. all bad emotions. the first to go to jail was flint
Did people really think he was a douche bag? I thought he was fine saying it like that. He tried to make it positive with the drago fang
Well, it DOES feel like Bronson's a douchebag when you see this scene at first, and how he acts in the rest of the game.
It's not until you find out why he acted this way that you realize he just didn't know how to say it.
He's sweating
"It was pierced through your wife's heart"
Oh fuck.

God this scene really breaks my heart. The music, Flint's reaction was felt so real and human, the flashback of Flint and Hinawa's last moment together, and the fact that Lucas and Claus not only witnessed their mother's death but had to see their father go crazy. This game is a depressive masterpiece....

This game was planned to be on n64 and this would’ve scared me
Claus's fate could be described as worse than death for all intents and purposes. He was turned into a machine of pitiless violence by the people that destroyed his family and world, so that he could be forced to wipe out all life on Earth for the whims of an immortal madchild. The only escape he could find was in killing himself in a moment of lucidity, after nearly killing his father and brother, and damning the whole human race.
If you completed the game the saddest part is "Claus took mortal damage"
*In Professor Farnsworth voice*
"Good news everyone, I found this razor sharp Drago fang impaled deep into Hinawa's heart, it will make for a great weapon!"
As heart breaking as this scene was, I needed a good laugh. Thanks.

I truly love how simple the art style is yet how detailed the animation is.
I have played through most of Nintendo's franchises, but I can definitely say Mother is by far, my favorite.
Anyone who says the mother series is trash probably doesn’t know what good games are
Except Mother 1 because it was kind of bad.
MOTHER 1/EarthBound Beginnings had a phenomenal story. Most people don't like the gameplay because of the difficulty spike (too many random encounters and Mt. Itoi) and excessive grinding. But the game isn't really bad by any means. To me it actually was a wonderful experience to play through.
@@okoder the controls on the Nes Version sucked so much lol glad they fixed it on gba
Mother 1 REALLY needs a remake, because the game has good aspects that are buried by poor aging. But it’ll never happen, because Nintendo loves ignoring the mother series for whatever reason.
The most disturbing about flint's outburst about hinawa's death was that, the twins just watched as the man they called a father broke down in violence. Became the first ever criminal in the whole town, just watching the most gentle man they know gone violent

What a fantastic portrayal of raw human emotion, it's incredibly progressive. Hell this game was in it's essence progressive.
To be honest, the way I view it, it's a conservative game. If you think about it the heroes of the game were the conservatives. They were the only ones that didn't go with Porky's radical new ideas.
@John Statesman Huh? When he said progressive they didn’t mean political. They meant a progression of showing how a games story can be perceived as art. Also localization of this game is up to Nintendo. I haven’t seen a single person against the localization of this game.
@@ekeneanyanike7013 I am against the localization of the game though not for those reasons. I feel that if Nintendo were to localize it, they would censor so much that it wouldn't even be Mother 3 anymore, and besides the fan translation is already amazing.
@@captainniiue1988 I agree they would sensor it but it’s not like 1 whole group of people are against its localization. Like John Statesman says. It would be nice if we could have a perfect translation but that will never happen because Nintendo wouldn’t do it. Also the fan translation is already good enough.
I'm coming back here to revise my reasoning. After doing further research, Nintendo likely wouldn't censor much, since they don't care about censorship as much as they used to, however, the fan translation is better than anything Nintendo would ever be willing to do, and a lot of the names and locations would likely be different than what we're used to, such as Fassad, who's name most likely would just be Yokuba.
I don't blame Flint for going berserk upon hearing about Hinawa's death, I mean, come on, she was his wife. How could he not suffer a mental breakdown?
And he never got to say goodbye. He also had just read the letter about how Hinawa was having fun with her father, but was also happy to go back home and see him again. But it didn't happen. While I was playing the chapter I felt so bad for Flint. He tried so desperately to find Hinawa, even finding the red cloth that came from her dress which gave him hope, but it was no use. This game is a masterpiece.
If I were Flint. I would be like "Screw the fire! I gotta find my wife and kids!"
Ah.... Flint...
@@ayzion1 human emotions are more complicated then that.
That's not a mental breakdown. It's just sadness turned into anger.

1:06 Let the depression begin.
Man, what a masterful work of pixel art. There are so many subtle, unique frames of animation that really sell the anguish Flint is going through. The way he swings his weight around like he's furious but doesn't know what to do with those feelings is so perfect at conveying his mental state. The little lurch forward he does when he's holding onto the wood and starts stepping towards Bronson does so much to convey how broken he is. I've really never seen such expressive pixel art before, and it's just what a scene with this kind of emotional weight needed.
I can't blame him for going berserk. It still wasn't a good thing, but Flint is a guy that seems to have went through most of his life tackling problems head-on and with brute force. The village even knows him as a reckless, good-natured tough guy that can be relied on when an issue needing strength arises. This isn't a problem that can be solved at all much less with his strength, so the anger and resentment needs another outlet. He has to hit SOMETHING, that always solves the problem, or at least calms him down. The village people were getting in the way of that, so they had to forced out of the way. This just makes it all the more tragic for him, not knowing another method of getting through an issue aside from brute strength doesn't prepare you to handle emotional issues.
I hope I'm not the only one that thinks this death and Claus's death are A LOT more sad than Aeris' death in Final Fantasy VII
I was just going to say that...

Flint hearing the news and dealing it with angry sadness, smashing his fist on the ground and beating the good hell out of people because of it hurts more than Undertale's entire story

This part was my favorite part in the game. Not because of the tragedy, but because of how emotional and real this scene is. Anyone who lost someone they truly loved would react the way Flint did. This scene did make me cry, and made me fall in love with this game and the series even more than before. The music is also PERFECTION throughout this scene.

Hey! No! D:
wHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU
When I first played MOTHER 3, I was extremely excited and hearing the trumpet vibe from MOTHER 2 gave me goosebumps.
When I got into this scene, I didn't know how to feel. I never expected this from MOTHER 3, this game is genuienly a rollercoaster but honestly I don't mind it. I really like it when the game gives you these emotions. It gives you more purpose and it gives a really intense dire to the story of the game. This is why MOTHER 3 is peak JRPG game. I wish there were more games like this tbh
One of the things that hits me the hardest here is how Flint's memory of when he last saw Hinawa is one of only two times in the game you actually see the entire family united together on screen, and when it takes place it is already in the past. The only other time you see the family together is at the very very end of the curtain call, which isn't even technically part of the story anymore, but also why that final moment hits so hard. After all the tragedies and sadness the family experienced, the only place they can be together again is in the fcking credits.
One of the things that causes this to feel all the more tragic is the shock of it compared to the two Mother games before it. Yes, I know the franchise, especially Earthbound has had disturbing moments, but they are usually just trippy/spooky. But here, it catches the player off guard with Flint madly swinging the stick around and the other characters conveying horror and surprise. You couldn’t really get those dramatic moments involving the main characters in earlier games, probably because of hardware restrictions. I still love Mother 1 & 2 but the third was the best in terms of raw emotion and fleshing out characters.
I remember when i played this game as a kid and this scene really shocked and moved me. Flint's reaction felt so real, and i can't help but appreciate this scene nowadays.
You sure you played this as a kid? This game was never released outside japan. This is fanmade translation

If you've ever experienced losing someone important to you (a lover, a relative, a friend, a pet or whatever), you know exactly how Flint felt at this exact moment: a mixture of confusion, anger, sadness, grief, disbelief and so on. The game and its story go right in the feels.

12 years, and I still come back to this... When I played this, I was younger, and it hit me so hard. Now, I have a loving wife as well, and I couldn't imagine doing anything else other than what he is doing if I were to hear of such news about my own wife. The unbearable pain, the inability to even cope with the moment, the lashing out. It's uncalled for... but I couldn't think straight at all if I were him. Amazing use of spritework and music to convey his emotions. This is how you make players care about characters, when they feel real to you, and you can feel their pain, joy, and everything else.
The news Bronson brought pierced a lot fucking more than the fang piercing Hinawa.

I think what is really overlooked in this scene is that it’s heavily implied Flint is like REALLY strong. Throughout Chapter 1 he constantly performs acts of exceptional strength like breaking down the door of Fuel and Lighter’s home with ease, and breaking a giant piece of wood trapping Fuel with ease, he’s a shepherd which means he most likely always physically active, and his special ability is literally called “Brute Force”. So imagine how bad he must have damaged the bodies of Abbot and Ollie when he whacked them with a stick.

This may be the best depiction of a nervous breakdown in gaming history, no joke, this entire game makes you laugh but then suddenly DEVASTATES you.
And to think....most of us named Hinawa after our own mothers.
This game deals with some really heavy themes, and the soundtrack really manages to amplify all of those feelings. It's lighthearted at times, but the overhanging sadness from prior scenes stays with you throughout the whole game. It's amazing.
The fact that I cannot made Flint reach to his wife and children in the wildfire part made me real sad 😢
It's so sad to see all the villagers trying to "comfort" flint by calming him down instead of just letting him mourn. I kinda see why he attacked them.
Though Hinawa's death was sad, it was funny seeing Flint beat the snot out of people.

I like how despite clubbing everyone with a hot stick, Flint isn't made out to be the bad guy. He went off the rails, but only because he didn't properly know how to handle the grief of having to bury his wife. I don't think most guys do, to be honest.

The song that plays after Bronson says Hinawa was killed also plays in chapter 6 but with a different style
Bro. I swear this is the most saddest mother game ever.
remember you can name hinawa. most players who didnt know the plot, named her after their own mom.
It's crazy that the death of a 16-bit SNES-like game character can make me feel so depressed. Seriously, the first time I saw this scene (along with the funeral that followed shortly after), I nearly cried. It's definitely on par with Aeris' death from FF7. I also nearly cried at the ending boss fight when Hinata's spirit returns and tells her son, Claus, to come to her. *sniff* I kind of wonder if the upcoming fan-made sequel, "Mother 4" (which is still in development), will also have plenty of dark and depressing moments like "Mother 3" did.
From what I heard, Mother 4 isn't connected story wise, but something tells me it might have it's moments.

The piano cue and then the lightning at 1:13 in combination always sends a shiver through me. Truly, TRULY powerful moment, I think they had it happen that early to really keep you emotionally motivated throughout the game.
I personally find this single scene sadder than the whole of the last of us part 2
Of all the scenes in the game that got to me the most, it's this part and the meadow that completely broke me personally.
Everything happens normally and has a light tone until you get to THIS. A family torn apart on the very first Chapter of the game, and the story doesn't hold anything back. Truly, Flint's reaction to his wife's death isn't fictional; it's a human reaction, a reaction that any of us could potentially have. That's why we can relate with Flint here.
You can say this scene was HEART BREAKING. Sorry not sorry.

It's incredible how effective this scene really is, considering Hinawa isn't in the game all that much beforehand. Flint's rage is absolutely devastating to watch every time.
Man...what happened to Nintendo. They once kept up the standard for major titles, and now they just release rushed out mediocre experiences. The days of them implementing scenes with genuine emotion like this are long gone

For an '06 GBA game, I oddly feel this closely, even after having saw this scene a number of times.
Anyone who says games of any sort can't do emotional stuff needs to see this.
God I knew that was coming but what shocked me about this scene is that the animation was so fluid especially for a game with pixels I just find it really beautiful in a way idk it’s an artist thing
This was the moment the game became real for me
Hell, even if you know Hinawa dies, the scene is so well done that it'll stir something in your gut. The drama here is extremely palpable; it feels raw and real enough to make the artificial woes of two-dimensional sprites move you.
This, among many other reasons, is why I can safely say that Mother is one of the best game series on the planet, despite never having played the games and thriving off of spoilers.
