Earthbound is the english version of mother 2, mother 1 is earthbound beginnings who final Boss is guiegue (Giygas but less powerful, with a physical form and he had the Power of thinking)
I really like how the two brothers represent the two states of the world showcased in this game. Lucas represents the untouched, natural beauty of the world at the beginning of the game while Claus represents the cold, artificial reality of Porky’s mechanical utopia.
That actually brings a lot to the title screen at the end of the game because instead of being mechanical and organic it is only wood symbolizing Lucas’ side
I couldn't imagine how the FULL game would turn out. If you didn't know, Itoi said Mother 3 was going to be a lot more depressing and darker than the final version, but I think because of memory limitations they had to be cut. These include Porky's death; three flashbacks involving Lucas and Claus for the final battle; an animation of Claus being constructed into a robot AKA the Masked Man; Kumatora being a Magypsie instead of Fassad, meaning that when you pull the final needle you have to sacrifice Kumatora; unused battle backgrounds that involve having Claus in it; an unused boss referred to as "Lucas's Nightmare"; etc.

@@elenan.798 giving Lucas comfort and closure kind of like performing last rites to keep his doubts from clouding his judgment. I love how the doorknob that thomas pulls out around the start of the first chapter follows you throughout the game and even appears lastly in the credits
I'll leave this here for those who want to see a happy ending here. Even if you don't think the credits mean anything, you can consider what happened before the credits. Before the credits, there is the phrase "A crisis gone is easily forgotten. In any case, everyone is peachy-keen now." Sorry what? Is everyone carefree and happy? Just ask yourself under what conditions can a crisis be easily forgotten? Only if you and your loved ones escaped death. If someone dies, then the hole in the heart stays with you for life. If the dragon had not revived everyone, then Lucas would never have been able to be peachy-keen. Claus as a zombie and as a mechanical cyborg wouldn't make Lucas carefree either. Mention of a miracle, the phrase "We've regained something incredibly immense!" and multiple thanks to the player for saving the world also hint that something so incredible has happened that it's hard to imagine. The dragon revived everyone, literally everyone, even mole crickets. I think that the very last frame of the game, where Hinawa sends pigeon mail, is not accidental. This was the moment when everyone was still happy, and the Dragon allowed everyone to return to the psychological and emotional state that was at that time. I do not mean a rollback of events, I think that it was the revival of all the characters and sentient beings that happened, and they have a memory of these three years. Hell, I'm sure Itoi didn't want to leave us all weeping over the fate of Lucas and Claus forever. Enough of the tears that we shed during the final battle! This conversation in the dark just doesn't make sense if Claus is dead.
yeah i agree and i mean lucas pulled 4 out off the 7 (i forgot how they were called ) so they defenently didnt die and in general it just be anticlimatic like all the events for the mother series the gyigas boss fight like could you imagine off all that was for nothing? i think that be kinda stupid
I heard that Porky was originally going to die at that part, before they came up with the idea of the ASC. When the meteor hits the ship, Porky's spider mech was gonna fall out. and hit the ground, causing the glass on Porky's mech to shatter and fall on him, killing Porky.
For those wondering, if the player selects, "no" when Lucas pulls the needle, Lucas will pull it anyway. Lucas has grown so determined that even the player can't alter his decision. Brilliant storytelling!
Either that or he's just forcing himself to do it even thou he doesn't want to, his brother just died on a horrible way and context in front of him, yet nobody gives him a moment to take it in or simply grieve, cry his heart out, they'll just tell him to do it right here right now (althought there was no rush, nobody else was trying to pull the needle anymore). No wonder the world went to hell, if they just gave the kid some time to chill maybe there would still be an island
@@facundosilveira5535 I always interpreted it as the dragon reconstructing the world, this is hinted at with the title screen becoming whole again instead of being an amalgamation of natural and mechanical elements
@@facundosilveira5535 Thats... not the theme of the game at all. The needles represent pain and trauma, the dragon represents rebirth. The game is about Lucas overcoming his trauma and growing up. Its about pushing through trauma and letting that help you be strong, not to corrupt you. He doesn't have time to cry and do nothing, because he's becoming strong now, and being so means that you have to shoulder responsibility for everyone you love.
That moment of AGONY where Lucas just doesn't even know what to DO anymore...no one would, in that kind of situation! Hasty, indeed. -wipes at tears- So many emotions. This is definitely Mother 2's (Earthbound) opposite. Instead of battering the final boss with human emotion, the boss batters US with human emotions. Pure genius. So deep.
Mother 1/Earthbound Zero: You drove away a alien by singing a song. Mother 2/Earthbound: You killed a gruesome and scary creature by praying. Mother 3/Earthbound 2: The boss mess with your mind and Hinawa keeps telling he's Lucas brother and killed him by reflecting the most powerful PK Thunder i've seen. Mother final bosses in a nutshell
Look i know masked man is final boss of this game but i think porky's battle gave a feel like "Final boss" too by saying weird things and those words gets more understandable after knowing the past of pokey/porky. But of course masked man's battle was sad too like most sad boss battle i ever seen.
Mother 1= sing Mother 2= praying Mother 3= saving his long lost brother by hinawa talking to claus but then commits suicide because of all the bad things he didnt realise he did
What really gets me is that when the player makes Lucas hit the Masked Man/Claus, Hiwana tells him to stop. Doing it more in the second phase causes Lucas to feel heartbroken and cry. It's honestly so gut-wrenchingly depressing and terrible, this game really knows how to get you in the feels
17:41 Man, this just hits so hard. The Love theme starts playing right when Hinawa starts calling out Claus name plus the “Come to your Mother” just...Man.
I just wanted to say I'm preventing myself from watching the end again, because I know there's going to be water works. I remember when I first played through the end of MOTHER 3, I was just on the edge of beginning to cry and my mom randomly comes by and asks if I'm okay. I ended up taking my laptop to my room (it was night time, anyway) and I finished it there. Let me just say my eyes were so puffy and my face hurt from crying a lot. It was like how I felt after watching Grave of the Fireflies.
The line that really got me was "You'll forgive your hasty brother, won't you?" Flint saying this to Lucas just has a sort of finality to it, like a kind of forgive and forget thing. It's so sad for me, and it really shows just what mastery Mother 3 had on storytelling. This is without a doubt, the BEST Mother boss for me. An absolute masterpiece.
*Claus fired an intense bolt of lightning!* huh- *Lucas's Franklin Badge reflected the lightning back!* wait a minute- *Claus took mortal damage!* *OH SHI-*
Mother 1: Proto-Mewtwo Mother 2: "I walked into the wrong theatre and this is how i remember it" Mother 3: Luke Skywalker joins the Dark Side in Episode 4
Everything about this is so powerful. Everything right down to the tiny little pauses in text: "Lucas's Franklin Badge... reflected the lightning back!" That little pause there made it really sink in. You know what was going to happen, but it leaves you in disbelief.
The part that gets me the most is where the cast of characters are talking to you at the end. Not you the character, but you the player. The line that got me was “hey, other world? Be good to him” and I have no idea why, but I love this game to bits and always will
that's true, when you meet again with someone who hasn't seen in years, the smell is the first thing you notice when you see that person; this is why when other person smells similar to another one you know, you look around to see if it's that person you know.
When I first played the game, this line caught me off guard. But when I thought about it more, it's very human. Smell is often an extremely powerful tool to remember something by. Like for example, I played Ocarina of Time as a kid around the same time our basement was being repainted, and to this day whenever I smell fresh paint, I can catch a glimpse of Link running through Hyrule Field at sunset. Recognizing the smell of a missing family member you've been searching for for years though... I'd imagine the rush of emotion would be staggering on its own.
fun little neuroscience fact- mammal's sense of smell indicates what we evolved from- prehistoric rat like creatures, for whom the sense of smell was the one they most relied upon for survival (to know what to avoid- e.g cats and what to approach- e.g food) Our brain is linked in such a way that the sense of smell is still the one most related to emotions and memory. (even tho sight is the most important one for us- takes nearly 25% of the brain to process)
Mother 1 (I haven't played it yet) Mother 2 - You pray with the characters to save the universe Mother 3 - The characters thank you for saving them and staying with them in the end.
As someone who lost his mother a year ago and has had a troubled relationship with his brother, this game hit a lot harder than I was expecting it to. Cathartic in many ways. What started off as a silly adventure turned into one of the most introspective games and endings I've ever experienced
@@mudkipbrainrot Thanks, appreciate it. Time heals all wounds, and my brother and I are slowly patching things up. In retrospect, I think this game really helped me process my loss, and it will always be one of my favorites
I beat this game over 3 years ago, and yet I still find myself coming back to this video at regular intervals.. It may sound cheesy, but this game has stuck with me for a long time, and will continue to do so for the rest of my life..
I only wish I could experience this again for the 1st time. I can easily say this is my favorite gba game despite the many more hours ive put into so many others but none of that can top the story that this game told. I dont think any game has made me cry before but this one did it, Itoi really knew what he was doing I suppose. I can only hope that many more people can experience this masterpiece someday...
13:38 I started to ... oh lord. I never thought that i was gonna cry..but i cried... I hope he went to heaven ... and.... I cant... the saddest thing i´ve seen in a long, long, long time. I think that this game is all about reflections of what you feel when you loose someone who was important in your life, the one that you love, it dont matter if is your mother, your brother, your girlfriend... The feel of emptyness, loneliness but also with the hope to see them again...
I just finished the game recently, and honestly, I feel sad that I finished the game. I actually had fun playing this game from the beginning to end. from having a happy normal life to a silly and deep adventure that ends with a sad ending. the fact that everyone thanks you and good bye you and hoping to meet again it feels hard since the game never localized outside from japan, I really do hope to meet them again in the future, even if the game never gets released or a remake.
I love how Mother final bosses are defeated in less expected ways. First we have Mother with Giegue, Giegue is an alien from outer space which you defeat via singing the hell out of your throats. Then there's Giygas, the destroyed, deformed and distorted version of Giegue, which you defeat via praying like you were doing the 10 Hail Mary's, and then there's the masked man, which you defeat via deflecting a thunder shock with a badge. This trilogy is insane.
"So, who do you think is the cool one now?" *Ness tried PK Rockin Omega* *Paula tried PK Freeze Omega* *Jeff used the Multi-Bottle Rocket* *Poo tried PK Starstorm Omega* "Well shit."
... Lucas was never finished in the Mother series. Now when you think about it, in Subspace his character finally got his ending. We find him still remorseful and sad about the events of this game, but then is ambushed by the Subspace armies and the King Statue. It is now he meets Ness, the Earthbound Protagonist who had a happier ending in his game of the same series. Ness has Lucas' back. They destroy Pokey together and rid him from both of their lives. But then comes Wario, taking the only friend and confidence that Lucas had just gained. After fleeing, Lucas runs into Red, the Pokemon trainer, and they get ambushed by the Subspace armies. After emerging victorious, Lucas and Red venture forth together, finding the other two Pokemon Red needs to fight. Some time passes, and before long the duo run into Wario. But this time, Lucas isn't scared. He's mad. He's confident. He remembers Wario. And he fights with full force. Who would have ever thought a character could be finished outside their main game?
Man, this part with Wario blasting them with this arrow gun is fucking weird. Like, c'mon, they both had offensive PSI capable of obliterating him and a heck ton of different shields but no, let's act like stupid kids and do nothing that actual Ness/Lucas would do
@@starstruxtion it is not even about dodging, it is about failing to counter such dumb shit coming from someone comparing to who you are stronger tenfold

“Claus fired a fierce lightning attack!” ... “Lucas's Franklin Badge..” *...* “reflected the lightning back!” the delivery of this is amazing. love this game
wow this comment is old. this fight is scary in a different way. you’re not fighting an evil alien overlord, it’s your brother whom you haven’t seen for years. you missed him dearly only to discover he’s alive but as an empty husk who wants to destroy you. you have no choice but to fight him because the fate of the world depends on it. you try to resist but to no prevail. this fight is much scarier than any giygas because it is a personal fight that truly strikes at your emotions. it’s a boss you never wanted to fight, and that makes it the scariest

I heard that Porky was originally going to die at that part, before they came up with the idea of the ASC. When the meteor hits the ship, Porky's spider mech was gonna fall out. and hit the ground, causing the glass on Porky's mech to shatter and fall on him, killing Porky.
Tyrantis Productions Isnt Porky immortal?
Ricardo Gameplays due to going through time and the capsule, so he’s double immortal
@@facundosilveira5535 i thought this comment get's 700 likes😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
@@facundosilveira5535 Thats... not the theme of the game at all. The needles represent pain and trauma, the dragon represents rebirth. The game is about Lucas overcoming his trauma and growing up. Its about pushing through trauma and letting that help you be strong, not to corrupt you. He doesn't have time to cry and do nothing, because he's becoming strong now, and being so means that you have to shoulder responsibility for everyone you love.
@@G0NNG_official1360 Its literally not true though
Anyone notice how the metal sphere on the Mother logo in the end has become Earth?
It's meant to say the the world is now pure no machines no greed just pure happiness
Before: M⚪THER 3
After: M🌎THER 3
Just like the Mother logo
@Raggy123You always want to start arguments.
@Raggy123 I asked. Who asked you?
That moment of AGONY where Lucas just doesn't even know what to DO anymore...no one would, in that kind of situation! Hasty, indeed. -wipes at tears- So many emotions. This is definitely Mother 2's (Earthbound) opposite. Instead of battering the final boss with human emotion, the boss batters US with human emotions. Pure genius. So deep.
"You'll forgive your hasty brother won't you?"
Gets me every time
This entire ending was spoiled for me before I played through it.
I still sobbed.
The_meme _lover125 My heart couldn't take it anymore..
Earthbound beginnings = mother 1
Mother 1: you break the heart of an alien with the painful memories of his dead mom by singing the song she sung to em as an infant.
Look i know masked man is final boss of this game but i think porky's battle gave a feel like "Final boss" too by saying weird things and those words gets more understandable after knowing the past of
pokey/porky. But of course masked man's battle was sad too like most sad boss battle i ever seen.
Mother 1= sing
Mother 2= praying
Mother 3= saving his long lost brother by hinawa talking to claus but then commits suicide because of all the bad things he didnt realise he did
Ness' Nightmare: Not a real thing, a fight you must overcome to defeat Giygas.
Lucas' Nightmare: Very real, and he probably lives with it everyday.
both battles have the same background
16:59
So this is the end.
Nothing left to say.
But I feel within my heart,
We'll meet again someday...
You'll forgive your hasty brother, won't you?
An Orange Fellow NO
yes
I’ll consider the possibility at this point in time while I destroy the world real quick.
Wam bam
Nah I’m good
OF COURSE
Oh yeah he just wanted to destroy the world of course ill forgive him
What really gets me is that when the player makes Lucas hit the Masked Man/Claus, Hiwana tells him to stop. Doing it more in the second phase causes Lucas to feel heartbroken and cry. It's honestly so gut-wrenchingly depressing and terrible, this game really knows how to get you in the feels
So this is possibly where toby got the soul idea from
13:45 My late grandmother, who was very similar to Hinawa, said this exact quote when she gave birth to twin sons. I miss her so much... RIP.

Same here
I didn't even cry lol noob
Grave of the Fire Flies makes me cry when I start thinking about it. I'm tearing up just writing the title.
“Claus took mortal damage”
To 10 last words said before disaster
The line that really got me was "You'll forgive your hasty brother, won't you?" Flint saying this to Lucas just has a sort of finality to it, like a kind of forgive and forget thing. It's so sad for me, and it really shows just what mastery Mother 3 had on storytelling. This is without a doubt, the BEST Mother boss for me. An absolute masterpiece.
"Come to your mother. You must be so exhausted."
That was it for me, flood gates were open and I was an emotional mess
I recognize that background. that's the Mani Mani / nightmare background
DonTron010 Oh yeah it is from Mother 2
It's also the background of lucas's final smash in super smash bros ultimate
*Claus fired an intense bolt of lightning!*
huh-
*Lucas's Franklin Badge reflected the lightning back!*
wait a minute-
*Claus took mortal damage!*
*OH SHI-*
Should have given the Franklin Badge to Salsa smh
Mother 1: Proto-Mewtwo
Mother 2: "I walked into the wrong theatre and this is how i remember it"
Mother 3: Luke Skywalker joins the Dark Side in Episode 4
Everything about this is so powerful. Everything right down to the tiny little pauses in text:
"Lucas's Franklin Badge... reflected the lightning back!"
That little pause there made it really sink in. You know what was going to happen, but it leaves you in disbelief.
The Mother series first fight is a lamp. The last Mother series fight is your hypnotized brother. Wow. How the times have changed.
I cried. And I never cry over fiction. I bawled like a little girl.
i don't like those scary german fairy tales didn't we all?
I cried too ; ;
The part that gets me the most is where the cast of characters are talking to you at the end. Not you the character, but you the player. The line that got me was “hey, other world? Be good to him” and I have no idea why, but I love this game to bits and always will
"Lucas remembered Claus's smell."
Me: Haha!
Me: ...
Me: Wait what?
that's true, when you meet again with someone who hasn't seen in years, the smell is the first thing you notice when you see that person; this is why when other person smells similar to another one you know, you look around to see if it's that person you know.
I'd imagine the rush of emotion would be staggering on its own.
fun little neuroscience fact- mammal's sense of smell indicates what we evolved from- prehistoric rat like creatures, for whom the sense of smell was the one they most relied upon for survival (to know what to avoid- e.g cats and what to approach- e.g food)
Our brain is linked in such a way that the sense of smell is still the one most related to emotions and memory. (even tho sight is the most important one for us- takes nearly 25% of the brain to process)
I am too damned sad to even care about that 😭
This ending is without a doubt one of the most powerful endings in any video game ever. It even makes me cry today and I'm an adult.
@17:18 "Lucas wanted to cry"
Me too bud, me too...
To think that many people were already crying by the time Lucas himself only WANTED to cry and people still call him a crybaby…

This is definitely one of the most darkest and heartbreaking deaths in Fiction History.
As someone who lost his mother a year ago and has had a troubled relationship with his brother, this game hit a lot harder than I was expecting it to. Cathartic in many ways. What started off as a silly adventure turned into one of the most introspective games and endings I've ever experienced
Hey man, I’m really sorry that happened. I really hope you’re doing better now. ❤

Mother is definitely one of my favorites video games series, its goofy, weird and fun while managing to hit you right in the feelings
the pause between franklin badge and reflected the lighting was the icing on the cake
well, cake of sadness
To think if Ness actually killed Porky before fighting Giygas, Lucas and Claus would've lived regular lives.
"So, who do you think is the cool one now?"
*Ness tried PK Rockin Omega*
*Paula tried PK Freeze Omega*
*Jeff used the Multi-Bottle Rocket*
*Poo tried PK Starstorm Omega*
"Well shit."
Tbh he probably would have if Porky didn't run away.
Like, c'mon, they both had offensive PSI capable of obliterating him and a heck ton of different shields but no, let's act like stupid kids and do nothing that actual Ness/Lucas would do
@@seneryy yeah I always wondered why Lucas didn't dodge like Ness

There is an unused giygas version of Claus which was going to be the final boss, and it is scarier than Giygas.
This boss fucks with your emotions this time
wow this comment is old. this fight is scary in a different way. you’re not fighting an evil alien overlord, it’s your brother whom you haven’t seen for years. you missed him dearly only to discover he’s alive but as an empty husk who wants to destroy you. you have no choice but to fight him because the fate of the world depends on it. you try to resist but to no prevail. this fight is much scarier than any giygas because it is a personal fight that truly strikes at your emotions. it’s a boss you never wanted to fight, and that makes it the scariest
