  • The largest crash in motorsports history, as simple as that. 37 cars were involved out of the 68 that started the race that afternoon of the 13th February of 1960: A sight that has never been seen again...

It's still so difficult to believe nobody was killed in this MASSIVE crash, especially when there was pretty much no safety at the time.

My favorite part of these old broadcasts is how different the style of commentary is from then to now- "here they come out of the fourth turn" just seems so BAD by today's standards but was commonplace back then. The sound is pretty hilarious too.

The narrator said that it was "lady luck" why everyone involved in the shunt lived to tell the tale. Back then it most definitely was.

Because it was 1960 and the rules were if your car was up to snuff it could race...these cars were showroom stock...they stopped being "showroom stock" with the Gen 2 in the mid 70s when they became homologated in the terms that manufacturers would make cars SPECIFICALLY for racing but had to make 200 production versions that the average American could buy in a showroom.

@@RingoYoteyou’re wrong it was the modified sportsman division which where older models of cars with some modifications to them to match the speeds of the newer cars

Some of these cars were over twenty years old. It was a different division of NASCAR from Cup, this was the early iteration of what has since evolved into todays Whelen Modified series. The cars were not Stock, very far from it.

If this weren't real I would laugh at it.
But since it's real I'm glad that everyone involved there is ok, still smiling due to otherwise laughable moment.
